First bit of progress so far, any advice for improvement? Just got a $250 lego store gift card, what are some of the neatest/coolest sets in that price range for someone that hasnt been in to lego for years? Used to love lego SW as a kid but doesn't seem to be many sets at that price range

Tried my hand at making a Rock Raiders mobile crane, wanted something a bit unusual so instead of a typical cab in front design it's piloted from up top, with cargo space taking up most of the chassis.

For me and my castle collection its that Knights Procession is them returning the corpse of the king to his palace. His death sparks a war of succession where the different factions, mainly the black falcons (brother of the king) and the lion knights (son of the king), fight to take the throne. The chaos has given rise to use of previously forbidden magics by Majisto and The Witch+Bat Lord who try to form Mageocracies under their own rule. The Dragon Masters are mercenary knights who attempt to take power in the mountainous, iron-rich (and dragon infested) northern region and demand autonomy from central power as repayment for fighting in the crusade where the king died and where conquered lands where promised as payment but of course never delivered.

The forestmen are a band of bandits-turned-revolutionaries. Previously simple thieves and (crusade)draft-dodgers they have turned into a core of a pseudo-democratic revolutionary movement popular with a civilian population that is fed up with suffering under the whim of corrupt nobles and kings. This new lofty goal caused a split within the bandit clans where the more selfishly minded bandits now smuggle, rob and raid under the banner of the wolfpack, often working for the highest bidder to do whatever unsavoury things need doing. To add even more bs to it.
At first I had three factions of the lion knights and two of the dragon masters. Blue back yellow lion, yellow back blue lion and red/white with lion head for the lions. Green dragon and blue dragon factions for the dragons. In the end I just considered them parts of the same lions and dragons armies because it got too complicated and I didnt have enough of all factions shields to make soldiers.

Wish we had more recurring brands like Octan, I think they add a lot of character. Something like the generic cherry picker trucks they do would be a bit more interesting in this telecom livery for phone line repair, as opposed to just generic utility orange. Could even have phone booths with the same logo pop up occasionally as side builds, or use a cellphone shop as the filler building in some fire or police set.
Wish they'd bring back the old shipping company logo too for cargo ships and freight trains and the like.

Explain why it looks 20 times worse. The only thing I'm not really a fan of on that guy's MOC is the fish and the brick fence by the cannon being 1) lower to the ground and 2) made by that cringe technique of flexing 1x2 plates. Other than that it looks like a fairly nice reimagining of the original set.

NTA but the original looks fine as just a rectangle because it's clearly meant to be simplistic. The moc adds some more intricate details like the balcony rail but in doing so creates too much of a contrast with the massive bland rectangle. It just needs either more interesting shaping or some detail to break up the surface a bit, there's too much plain white face.
I'd also say the balcony is a bit too close to the door at the bottom.

The cannon being lower is actually better since it lowers the gunners profile. He would be taking instructions from the man on the tower on how to adjust the cannon to zero in on the the target and doesn’t need to be higher up.

Plus they might not be able to make play sets because of rights issues. Meaning they had the rights to make playsets back when the original wave of sets came out, but those rights might have lapsed. And they might circumvent that with a microscale rivendell which would technically be a scale model.

I don't know if these images are old but thank you for posting them. As a kid who came of age with M:tron and Blacktron 2, and was utterly fascinated with "old" space LEGO (i.e. whatever had come before), these images are extremely powerful nostalgia. Making a LEGO Doom mod. My plan is for it to be based off of LEGO Battles with different player classes (Astronauts, Aliens, Knights, Pirates etc. [Thinking of throwing in 1999 Star Wars and Black Falcons+Lion Knights too]) but with a Doom/Quake deathmatch flair, capture the flag etc. Just finished the Classic Spaceman as the first test character, and the first two weapons being the Star Wars megaphone blaster and the Classic Space blaster, which right now function identically but will be different later, and projectile-based instead of hitscan. I'll make maps, too, that are all brick-themed.

I'll still do Star Wars but it was always gonna be minimal (Like two characters maximum, I think I'm going with Vader and Jango), like bonus content when the main stuff is all classic Castle, Space and Mars Mission centric stuff. Depending on how it grows I want it to have factions but it might be more of a free-for-all FPS with a starting weapon depending on your player choice, we'll see. I also kinda want something dota-esque where you can summon NPCs that can fight for you while you attack a thing. I'm very inexperienced with doom scripting so i dunno, just spitballing

That Lego classic box I got is $60 for 1500 bricks. Got it on sale for 25 bucks. That same amount of bricks at the lowest price would be $150.

The Lion Knights castle is 4500 pieces for 400 dollars. This one is apparently just under 3000. So based on the pieces alone it'd be closer to 270 dollars. Probably with a box, instructions, shipping etc you're looking at 300 bucks.
Assuming the price per brick for the castle is a reliable starting point. It might not be since it has a LOT of the same small grey bricks for the structure which I assume is cheaper.

Now that the year is almost over, I think we can all agree this has to be the shittiest year for Star Wars kits so far.
Virtually every kit is garbage. Half of them are just statueshit
Their big "20th anniversary" for the Clone Wars was one shitty Jedi Starfighter kit with a unique minifig.
All the Mandalorian kits are garbage (as is the show and boba fett as well)
Andor gets one garbage set that is extremely overpriced.
Those absolute shit-tier Kenobi sets
Another non-articulated droid that no one asked for.
Battlepacks that are overpriced and include less than what $10 got you a decade ago for double the price, regardless of inflation they're bad deals.

Star Wars has been shit for so many years it's just astounding they reached a new low. Can't even remember the last time there was a single kit that interested me.

So I got the Lego Luigi...

1. The only instructions in the box are how to assemble the figure
2. Needs two AAA batteries. This is better than having to constantly recharge a lithium battery
3. You need a tablet or smart phone to get the actual instructions for the sets you buy
4. It is grossly over priced, even at $48 USD it feels like a rip off
5. Your Lego Luigi/Mario whatever will need a firmware update. Yes, your fucking Lego needs a firmware update

Also reading the wikipedia about the design of the sets it seems like the people at Lego told the designer at every point that this was all a bad idea and he just kept fucking going until it hit stores.

I only got the bullet bill CMF and the 3 Luigi's Mansion sets. Getting the Mario or Peach fig at the moment is not on my radar at all and neither are any of the other sets. I figure I'll just bricklink a yoshi or something if I ever actually want one or any other character. Im big on Nintendo but the NES, ? Block, and this App Required stuff is just kinda weak. The Bowser and flying koopa ship sets look nice but eh. The K'nex Mario figures were so nice that I kinda wish I didn't give them away.

That's kinda a shame if it is fixed but it's not the end of the world. Even hunched it still looks good, hell it kinda looks like the Armored Shrikes from Blue Gender only on the Eva-00 lanky side. I really like this design and I need to find ways to give it guns and rollerskates.
