I would have preferred a brickbuilt head bust to a figurine. Even better if it was something other than a red or gold hau, anything to hint that they didn't forget all the other eight years of G1.
In the end it doesn't matter because I'm not in the $100+ online sales group, but I don't enjoy getting my butt pinched like this

I always thought those Star Wars and Marvel Lego busts were lame, pointless, ugly and boring as hell. Like most other sets "intended for adults". How much of a mindless consumer someone has to be to buy something like that? They're almost on the same level as funko pops, the only saving grace is that you can take them apart and build MOCs using the pieces.

I feel the same yet those sets are more developed as display pieces. To me they should have gone full speed on either direction, a better quality statue considering a large portion of bionicle collectors have them as dust collectors, add more playability by ditching the base and takua, add THE play feature or a bohrok.

They can't even get the shaping right as a display set, bending over backwards to add a gear function would make it look even worse. What they should've done is recolor the mixel joints to unfuck the color scheme but they're too cheap to do that. A small UCS plaque would've been nice too but if the Mata Nui stone has a print good enough for me.

Molds wear out over time. Heating and cooling morphs and destroys them. They certainly could rebuild the molds, but that shit is expensive. And for a theme that doesn't appear to have the same juggernaut status of its first three years...yeah good luck convincing the execs to even try.

I keep repeating myself- all Lego needs to do is make a “collectors” part set for bionicle fans once or twice a year you can order online. They can even overcharge for it. All it simply needs to be are parts we already have, molded in new colors for MOCs. I think people want new sets first and foremost to build with. The story at this point is completely secondary. There’s 0 percent chance it wouldn’t sell out. It would be the only way to get the parts.

If they ever do many any more, personally, I'd prefer just a commemorative set. Something like a 'Masterpiece Tahu', with articulated fingers, armor to go Nuva, all the various weapons, and multiple versions of Hau. And if that does well then maybe they could do the same with other characters. I've enjoyed Bionicle a ton but I don't have the room nor the desire to buy 6+ sets per assortment anymore. Or hey, they could always rework it to something like Hero Factory, you have a core group, then new figures could join or be enemies. The 6 member thing is just too pricey for casual buyers nowadays.

Lego can literally use their “imagination” and find a few handfuls of molds they have to reprint and recolor that are still in use and compatible with bionicle. it isn’t that fucking complicated. they can charge more for it being exclusive. Lego has molds still that they use of pieces that are compatible with bionicles. They can recolor some parts and put them in a pack for people to MOC with and charge 3x as much as they need to, and people will still buy it to build with. It’s not complicated. From a company customer relationship it would also be an extra bonus that it looks like a show of good will.

Comprehension then because I was never talking about outdated pieces. However, even in that argument, if they narrowed down a list of molds for 20 parts or so, they could probably make recolors of those for years and sell that as a MOC adult collector set for years and make a large profit,

I feel like nu-Tahu could've looked alright if they had more parts to work with. I've been out of the loop for a while but I was at the lego store recently and saw a bunch of mech sets that have convinced me that brickonicle is viable. This nigga could be kopaka with minimal adjustments. Couldn't they have made made it free after $150 instead of $100 to have a nigger part budget? Or just go all in on either takua or tahu instead of splitting the pieces on 2 figures? Obviously they can't have the part count of pic related but even the smaller ninjago mechs look good.

The Rahkshi Kaita powers seem entirely random, Za's has nothing to do with Fear/Anger/Poison. Vo for some reason has the same name of one of its conponents and has a tweaked version of its power. My guess is that Greg had to come up with the Rahkshi Kaita names/powers in 5 minutes and pulled random stuff out of his head, fully knowing that no other Rahkshi Kaita wpuld appear in the future. Bottom line, anything goes.

I know a lot of anons are upset about the Tahu GWP and the constant dick teasing LEGO is doing with Bionicle references in their sets. But I'm going to go out on a limb and say they're testing the waters with a possible G3.

My only real evidence is with their Twitter poll they did last week, asking: If we could have unlimited sets but only one theme, what would it be? A strange question especially given the 4 options: Bionicle, City, Friends, and Technic. Friends was the lowest percentage while the other three hovered pretty close to 30%

Let's be realistic, they aren't going to get rid of City, that's part of their bread and butter. Friends could go by the wayside but that's their girl theme. I'm certain they wanted to gauge interest in Bionicle alone. Having Technic there also helps gauging interest if Lego was designing new products similar to G1. And it's not like they're asking kids either if they're doing a fucking Twitter poll. If G3 happens, it's going to be targeted at an adult audience, for better or worse.

TL;DR The Twitter poll and the upcoming GWP are going to be used as data points on the feasibility of G3

Fun theory. Bionicle definitely seems out of place if that was the actual poll. Wouldn't seem right to use a gwp as a gauge though, especially since the style is so different from technic or ccbs. If anything a standalone Ideas set or something would have made more sense.

I have a similar theory, though I wouldn't have my hopes up too much.
I noticed Bionicle got relatively more attention and popularity lately from people who grew up with it back then but stopped keeping up with Bionicle and Lego stuff when they got older. A lot of people are surprised when finding out Bionicle sets aren't made anymore. The prices of used Bionicle sets also went up a lot just through this year.
I feel like the Lego Group noticed the popularity Bionicle gained in the last 1-2 years, and realized how much Bionicle is a part of their image now. Think of that Ideas contest this year, the references in some sets, how they are trying to resurrect constraction integrated into system (the spiderman ultrabuilds and those marvel mechs), and now the brickbuilt GWP. It might be that they're just nostalgia baiting for some easy profit and trying to calm down the Bionicle fandom which they think of as a loud (and annoying) minority. But there might be a chance that they're planning and designing a new generation of Bionicle maybe trying to learn from the mistakes of G2 and use the things that worked in Ninjago, and in the meantime they're trying to tell fans Bionicle still exists through these small references, tribute sets and contests.
But yeah, I guess hope for the best but prepare for the worst.

I think technic is in a weird spot regarding target and they have to do overengineered licensed car and truck replicas because it's the only thing that will return good money. By comparison Bionicle descended from play-heavy technic, with toys about shooting each other with bolts and discs.

When I was a kid I had some of the megablox sets from the early 2000s and they often times looked cooler than Lego sets and more interesting but they sucked ass to play with because they fell apart and the parts had poor tolerances. The megabloks dragons stuff I still kept. But a lot of their robot shit they made earlier than that were jank ass fuck.

Megabloks had this weird imitation bionicle looking like you might remember, I think they were mechs that has alternate builds or transformations. I remember spending a bunch of my birthday money on one as my very fire megabloks set and it just kept falling apart and I gave up. yea, i stopped lego after a while, and after college, i had a medical incident, and was down for a while, and noticed that bionicles had a g2 that was phasing out and the combiner beasts were filling shelves everywhere, managed to scrape together the main 6+beasts, umurak the hunter, (kicking myself for not getting makuta version) and ekimu. A bit on the expensive side due to them being on the way out, but so nice to have them on the shelf next to The Toa Mata and Toa Nuva. Even sprung to moc up the goober toa to fit with the 50th tahu. Even customized them to have the backlit brick i was so happy to be able to do.

I think the hurdle they have to jump IF they decide to play ball with bionicle again, is they need to make the sets that are worthwhile, and try to make a theme small and very specific, without breaking the bank with new molds to jack up the prices.

Not /toy/ related, but I've been replaying Bionicle: The Game just now, and I'm stunned it doesn't have an entry on The Cutting Room Floor. This game has TONS of weird shit, including entire playable areas you can't access, and playable characters you can't use. For some goddamn reason, there are also three completely different sets of character models, all have different detail levels, and I have absolutely no idea how the game decides to use them.
And they also gave Gali an ass. No, other Toa do not have then, only she does.

And here are the character models. My current playthrough had the one in the middle, but I also remember seeing the one at the bottom (same platform, PC), and one YT playthrough had the one at the top. Thing is, the game has no graphics settings other than screen resolution. So I have no idea how or why these models change between different playthroughs.
The game is fucking strange, and I wish someone dug deeper into it.

The top model in that screenshot is from the Xbox port, and is exclusive to it. The other two model sets are from the PC port, and are dependent on your CPU vendor. You will get the model on the bottom with Intel, and you get the model in the middle with anything else (generally AMD). I also made an exe patch that spoofs the vendors, so its possible to force the game to use either or, regardless of your processor.

Did you figure out if there's any way to fuck around with characters and locations? Ko-Wahi, only seen in cutscenes, has a recharge station, so it must've been playable. And Tahu Nuva also has a full set of skills, but he doesn't ever appear outside of the racing segment. I wonder if any other Toa Mata are playable too.

That Ko-Wahi section and more were playable at one point. Ive been able to mod the game so that Kopaka can access them as the level progresses, but its also possible to glitch him off the board and walk around. Tahu Nuva is similar, but the cut Ta-Wahi areas are only accessible with mods. As for the Toa Mata, a playable Gali Mata was left in the PS2 version, and I was able to make my own playable Lewa Mata with a model swap. You can find some videos about all of that stuff on my YT

As a kid, I was annoyed how the movies and games never represented the toys properly, but nowadays, I grew to like those depictions in their own way. My favorites are probably from the Mask of Light concept art, I think these struck perfect balance of things impossible to do with toys (Gali having a more slender body type, everyone having hands, fleshy tendons on joints, etc.) while still being faithful to the toys.
Still would love to see a purposefully "realistic" Bionicle animation a-la the LEGO Movie though.

While I think I'd prefer them being wholly mechanical, these organic designs are decent. Something similar to the movies but with masks more like the sets. >>10205126 and picrel are close to perfect, and it's a huge shame they ultimately ended up going with the mouth and eyebrow look in the movie. I like how the sets look IRL and the D'Anda art is amazing, but I prefer seeing interpretations of them that incorporate the organic parts. Yep, the UV mapping on her head is also fucked, so even with the correct texture it doesnt look entirely right. That visible skeleton is a redundant copy of the actual skeleton used for the rig, but in mesh form. Was easy to fix.

For me, I always imagined them looking similar to their game incarnations. They feel biomechanical, flexible, and keep all of the appeal of the sets themselves. The masks also look really cool (at least the Mata).

On another note, even though the 2003 game was super rushed, I feel like they captured the soul of the island Mata Nui really well. Each Wahi feels unique and consistent. Even the soundtrack reflects the elements that are represented. Shoutouts to Lewa and Gali’s soundtrack in particular.

Yeah even though the game was short and the story was a condensed retelling instead of being wholly faithful to canon, the atmosphere of the 03 game was top notch. As a kid and now into adulthood I still don't really understand the hate aside from autistic shitters pissed that it wasn't following canon. The gameplay is decent for a licenced game, like you mentioned soundtrack was great along with the art direction being a nice chunkier middleground between toy and film, the environments were fun to explore, and the sheer amount of lore they actually put into the game was mind blowing. I learned about the differences between Wahi, Koro, and Kini because of it, back when the terminology was still confusing to me. The extra stuff the developers sprinkled in too, like the various original statues and rahi designs they made. They gave us new things to look at and to wonder about when they didn't even have to. Love this game, and always will.

It isn't that bad, though I do wish it was a little 10-15 dollar set rather than a GWP. What I like about it is that it's another take on Bionicle using more traditional and Mixel parts. If they were at that 10-15 dollar price point I'd probably buy all 6 if they were Toa and Matoran sets.

If they do ever make sets, I would hope that this one would remain unique in a way, because it's gonna be an expensive ass set.

Mostly like the toys in terms of design. A bit less clownish proportions - smaller head, smaller feet, slimmer shoulders. No need for humanlike proportions though, their elongated limbs and gappy, skeletal frame are interesting.

Otherwise, more mechanical industrial detail. Pistons, tubes, see-thru veins pumping liquid. A bit grimy. Exposed muscle tissue and organs. No human hands - especially for characters with explicit weapon-limbs. Claws or other alien digits are fine. No eyebrows or mouths, just mandibles and robot LED eyes. And most importantly no cheesy English voices - LOMN elemental alien demigod voices all the way.

In real life, our gender more often than not correlates to our biological sex. However, in a world where biological sex is non-existent, there's no reason why gender would be binary, or why they would even have the concept of "male and female."

What they do have are elemental alignments. It makes way more sense for that to be their equivalent of gender, with pronouns based on the elemental prefixes. So yeah, that means 15+ "genders".

What's /toy/'s opinion on the Toa Nuva? I find them really neat. I just wish they weren't followed by 2 story arcs of having their asses handed to them (Kal & the Rahkshi).

If lewa hadn’t told the piraka they looked retarded at the start of the conflict I don’t think the piraka would have fought so hard and aggressively immediately and caught the toa off guard like that. I think Lewas actions were largely what caused that. They still may have lost but not nearly as bad. Prettt sure lewa has done this more than once.

I only really liked Tahu and Kopaka's mask, plus the new armor.

I've been trying to, but the relentless maximalist in me just won't be satisfied without shoving in every cool mechanic and interaction that crosses my mind. For what it's worth, I do at least strictly avoid exceeding any of the current length records in the TCG.
Anyway, thanks for the criticism. I'll keep making an effort to hold back on the walls of text, and maybe at some point it's actually going to work.

The 2016 Uniters masks, for the most part (Gali's was eh), did what the Kanohi Nuva should've done. That is, upgrading the base designs without adding absurd spikes and veins. Tahu's and Onua's masks were especially very good.

I really like Pohatu Nuva... that's about it. Don't own all of Nuva, but I think they all look like a downgrade from Mata. If I ignore the existence of Mata they're pretty good tho. But given the choice I'd always go with the OG.
