I've seen mention of this a few times, is this actually guaranteed to be the case? Not that I'm intending to get another (especially if there are theme restrictions again) but is this normal for a GWP to come back? Was it so popular that they're doing a second run? Or maybe it did so badly that they need to get rid of extra stock.

Between lack of posability/detail I think people just want an "upgrade". After kinda dropping lego as a kid and getting into gunpla in high school, it was kinda for the same reason as every other normie. Bionicles were really just action figures that required a kid's imagination to play with. Now a lot of us who look back on it with nostalgia want something a little less "toy" like and more in the "model" vein. obvi the distinction is semantics, but that's just my take as an oustider to /biog/.

The Makuta, and secretly the Order of Mata Nui, were meant to be the big protectors that handled major threats and disasters and naturally they were more powerful. And the Dark Hunters were just mostly aberrations and living weapons.
The Toa were always the underdogs, their advantage was bigger numbers, but that was only back when there were thousands of them. That said, a Toa could become more powerful through experience. Helryx's control over water was so great even the Shadowed One knew not to piss her off.

Forest Hideout was the Castle set, right? I wonder if these were planned ahead or they just did have a lot of stock. I was planning a bricks order so if they remove the theme restriction I may end up with another I could keep boxed.

Yes Forest Hideout was a Castle Set, and an Icons set. The upcoming GWP (40586: Moving Truck, pic related) is going to be an Icons theme, just like the Bionicle and Blackthorn GWPs. The Moving Truck GWP will be available from February 21st to March 3rd, fallowed by another GWP from March 4th to TBD. If the rumors are true, the Bionicle GWP will return on March 4th at the soonest.

I've been hearing that people have been going to lego stores intending to get the GWP, only to find that the majority of the qualifying sets (at least the desirable ones) are already sold out. If that really is the case then it's not surprising that they'd end up with piles GWP Tahus that they literally can't get rid of because of the extremely restrictive purchase requirements. A second run to get rid of the rest makes perfect sense, although I'm wondering if they'll loosen the purchase restrictions or if they're hoping that the new stock will be enough to entice people.

the piraka generally were broken as fuck. going by the books and the official farshtey discussions where he elaborates on their abilities, they were pretty absurd, but he drives home that their inability to work as a team is what screwed them. the fact that two skakdi are needed for them to use their elemental powers is cited as one of the only reasons they work together at all.
also in regards to the piraka vs barraki, even greg thinks the piraka would win there.
they're a really interesting lineup of characters

Glad to see Bionicle making for a super effective GWP. Looks like the demand for Bionicle is alive and well. The question is, what lesson will Lego take from this?
Will we get a bigger budget brick-built Bionicle set (admittedly, a 2nd reboot is asking for too much at this point), and or will more vintage themes get the GWP treatment?

Who knows, maybe we'll get Bionicle themed Creator sets or something. I don't see why they can't bring back nostalgia themes through Creator, could have Castle, Exo-Force, Alpha Team, Knight's Kingdom, etc.

Because Creator and Classic sets sell perfectly fine and I'm sure, at least in the case of Classic, no one is buying those for the models featured in the set. They're basically ways to get new parts in varying colors. A Bionicle or Castle or Space Classic set would ultimately be there for the parts, but happen to include builds featuring those themes. Maybe include a sticker sheet.

Toa can't use Nova Blasts because it nukes whatever area they're in. It's an absolute last resort. And according to Greg, Mata Nui was built to withstand Nova Blasts, on the outside a blast could ravage a whole planet.

This seems like a horrible idea. Planet busting level powers should not be a standard ability of the general Toa group, especially when some of that have gone bad in different kinds of ways. On depressed one who's tired of everything, or one who's desperate enough can just basically end everything around it.

Intelligence, agility, most practical power (can literally copy multiple powers at a time and store them for hours at a time) and impact vision (powerful enough to destroy boulders with a glance going by what Kongu/Nuparu said).
Don't get me wrong the other piraka are probably a little more intriguing but pre-split Vezok was undeniable, the most efficient.

Just because there is demand for more Bionicle doesn't mean there is necessarily enough to warrant another reboot. Maybe some brick-built remakes of more classic Bionicles, with a new piece or two (GWP or not), but nothing on the scale of G2. At most, there will to be a new Bionicle comic, it would most likely be a retelling of G1 Bionicle's story (kind of like what Dreamwave and IDW retold the old Transformers comics by Marvel). Who knows at this point.

The Barraki always seemed unusually weak, both for what a big deal they were supposed to be in and out of universe, and for following up the stupidly strong Piraka. Almost no special abilities, no particular demonstrations of especially notable skill or tactics, and their armies only mattered for a zerg rush at the very end of the arc.

ironically that was the big thing people complained about, they released as a GWP ahead of the lion knights castle, and people were kinda pissed.
And then when they announced they were going to do it again, it went live days before lion knights was available for early VIP access, so they AGAIN weren't available for castle fans... such a mess...

Yeah just check up on bricklink for these. Technic liftarms (1), Throwbot/Roborider parts (5, 7, 8).
2, 3, and 4 are Voodoo balls. 6 is a flex tube. And 9 is a Technic panel

I remember I bought a bunch of mask packs and never got a Hau. Never got a full set of the rest of the masks in gold or silver either. Also it's weird for me to see them all with the properly aligned socket part. I had all of mine horizontal with Tahu and just had everyone set up that way since then.

They were all in the the style of the Tahu GWP, except they had proper masks. Tahu also came with his original Hau so you could make him into his Mata version. The box had a style similar to the 2003 set packaging. And THEN I saw another set, which was a much larger character (about the size of the G2 Toa or Umarak) with a Rahkshi head, and was made from a combination of System and Bionicle pieces. I saw surprised how many Technic/Bionicle parts were used, including some Rahkshi thighs in white. I put them both in my cart, but of course when I looked away they both disappeared...

Bionicle system was closely tied to Technic not in one but two generations, so much that it is why CCBS started to lean more into that direction around 2016.
Turning Bionicle into a system line would actually be detrimental because they'd loose their identity, first by ditching the very system that made it grow and second by throwing away essential gimmicks like the masks. Because Lego is so fucking cheap they'd rather do like the GWP tahu and print a random piece than actually make new ones, and the capeshit figures show.
The GWP thing and all the brickbuilts done by the community are fine and fun experiments, but an entire full line like this be G3 gives me severely mixed feelings.

Figuarts-style articulated shoulder pauldrons don't seem too hard to build with legal building techniques, and existing pieces. Just use some battle droid arms (design number 30377) and some plates with sticks (design number 48336). That aught to do the trick.

The GWP is one thing, but if it became a full theme I could see unique masks that connect to maybe even a tow ball headpiece getting made. There would be much fewer original parts needed to be made and some investment should be expected. And things like masks make way for mask packs, rare ones, etc, so more things for people to buy and hunt for.

I think for a lot of people Bionicle isn't just the toys, as though they had their unique look the movies looked different, the comics had their own general style, and the books were their own thing. And who knows, maybe the new parts for a System Bionicle could include some pieces to get some of that old aesthetic. I'm sure some wouldn't like it, but it'd be something new and different. At this point it's Bionicle's spirit that could live on, the characters, the story; what made G1 G1 just can't come back with how things have changed.

The best Bionicle sets are the Bohrok and Glatorian (original, not Legends).

Im not a fan of the brick-built tahu, but I did like the g2 reboot, except for the toa wave 2, I didn't like how they ditched the cool designs of wave 1. I don't know where that puts me in the system/technic ratio or whatever, but I found g2 to be close enough, but the brick tahu too far.

See anything good /biog/? Part of a lego lot on my local classifieds, could probably get it for $20. The Grey Rahkshi shell looks like it could be Jaller & Gukko or Takua & Pewku which makes me consider it.

Asside from that I see nothing mindblowing. There's a white bohrok kal in the back, Hydraxon, Toa Nuju, I see some red/black scraps that could be Kalmah.

I think $20 is fair, looks like mostly random scrap parts.

The core of Bionicle is buildable action figures, not Technic. People can look at full-CCBS HF sets or even completely unrelated shit like Gunplas and think "oh it's like Bionicle", but nobody is going to have that same thought about a fucking Technic Tow Truck. Technic is relevant insofar as the repurposing of its elements towards use in action figures was a big contributor to the signature aesthetic of Bionicle, but I'd argue that repeating the same process for System is just a logical evolution rather than a complete departure. Doesn't mean it's not going to be shit if done poorly or that you have to like the style that results from it, but it really is more like replacing the exterior than the core.

The core of Bionicle is buildable Technic figures. There's a reason the playsets did so poorly as much as the CCBS shit. The fucking Rahi were Competion reskins. The Turaga were comprised of liftarms and connectors. Yes there were balljoints and specialized pieces but Bionicle is literally Slizers but tribal. I'd argue the story is the most important element but if we're strictly talking toys, it was Technic figures with competitive play features involving rubber bands and gears that made Bionicle Bionicle. Again, that's why G2 HF and the rest didn't last, because they deviated too far from Technic with CCBS and became bloated poseable figures with no interesting functions or building techniques that solely relied on fucking launchers as the main draw. That's why G1 started failing over the years too. Yes, the story became too convoluted but the figures became shit too. We went from shit like the 03 Matoran or Bohrok Va to fucking Kardatoran builds. Technic functions are the core of Bionicle. You cannot deny this. I say this as someone whose favorite years are 06 and 07. I loved the later sets but they lost their way after 04 when the phased functions out in favor of just launchers. Barraki and Mahri kind of mended shit with slightly unique canister builds, but then the Inika build became comonplace even with slight design alteration and all sets thereafter were fucking boring and predictable. System shit like Ninjago can just be balljoints and launchers because at least the build for most mechs and dragons is heavy in part count and more engaging than the same upper torso, lower torso, bones, armor, fists, feet. Idk where I'm even going with this but weird Technic creatures and characters are the essence of Bionicle. Fuck, look at the vehicle sets and Exo Toa too. Peak fucking sets, and what are they comprised of? Technic.

I think this would be the way to start. If we put ourselves in Lego's shoes, they're only going to make so many new elements, so unique mask and weapon pieces would be a good start.

Assuming the success that launch wave, I'd expect the next year's waves to include further new elements, so that's when we could get heads and hands. They may well be able to also add these in this initial assortment because heads and hands are probably generic enough that you could use them with other SCCBS items, like giving mech's hands, or introducing robot enemies for Ninjago (which could include their own 'masks' for those as well) for example.

Unique armor elements (that could also be used elsewhere as they're not exactly Bioncile specific, just leaning into the aesthetic) could also probably be made. Depending on how froggy they're feeling (which is usually not) these could well come with the initial assortment as well.

CCBS was too simple, understandably for stawars and ben 10, but for bionicle there needed to be more texture on the shells. Big flat surfaces are very rare on bonkles, only bohrok domes and some wing pieces come to mind. Yes, bionicles eventually went away from gears, but they mostly retained some sort of simple mechanisms, such as the phantoka rib cages, barraki jaws, or even piraka swiveling weapon-tools.
Point is, brick-built tahu doesn't even have a mask, so it feels like Bionicle in name only. G2 at least had gears and masks, so it's definitely more Bionicle than brick-tahu.

The relative lack of play features is probably the strongest argument against System-based constraction. I assume there are some decent gimmicks Lego has cooked up for larger builds, but it's always going to feel like a downgrade compared to what would be possible with Technic. Not to mention that the most basic play feature - making figures fight by physically smacking them into each other - works way less well when they're made from tiny bricks with fairly loose connections that will just immediately fly all over the room.

The first set were really cool and unique and won toy of the year somewhere. The second set not only was it repetitive but it could be argued the silver wasn’t as appealing to look at as the colors from the originals. also it was a little bit to similar to the toa nuva also having silver as well. Lego already had used their silver armor upgrade pass already

This is why the fandom at large is fucking retarded. Lego wasn't going to approve an ugly diorama or a boring gray robot that nobody outside the dedicated fandom would appreciate. The Mata head is at least iconic enough to potentially scratch the "I remember having one of those" part of people's brain and scoop up sales outside the group who'd buy it regardless.

I can't believe people throw such a bitch fit about the Mistika masks not looking like the Nuva ones when the Hau and (maybe) the Akaku (only because of the monocle) were the only Nuva masks that looked fucking anything at all like the first ones.

Most of the zoomers who complain about the 2008 Toa weren't even there to experience that the Nuva were ALSO disappointing in 2002.

They might have been bad but at least they resemble the previous ones. Only like half of the 08 Toa masks slightly resembled the originals, and the ones that did only shared one or two features between their predecessors. With that and how different the builds were at this point, it was hard to see the original Toa in these designs

Bold faced lie. Kaukau, Miru, Pakari and Kakama Nuva could literally have been colorswapped around and it would be near impossible to know which belonged to who. Kaukau *might* look the most aquatic out of the four since it kinda looks like a frog, but saying it resembles the original is simply untrue. Also if anything Miru Nuva looks like an upgraded Kakama.

So, more than can be said about Kanohi Nuva.
I don't even hold any kind of nostalgia towards 2008 sets - I had dropped out of bonkles by then - but to try to somehow present the Kanohi Nuva as some masterclasses of derivative design is just dishonest. They weren't that great in 2002 and they're not great today.

I do wonder how iconic the Mata head is to non Bionicle fans. I'd have to imagine the imagery of the Hau is greater. Maybe the head and mask together, but that's a lot more pieces, and the price getting a big bump.
