So with our 19th Groupbuild coming to a close, we now approach the 20th. Since it's a bit of a milestone and I've been running these for a little over 6 years now, I felt that we should do something a little special this time around. Instead of the typical structure of taking ideas from the posters ITT and polling them to decide what theme to do for the next few months, we're going to have something I'm gonna call the "Groupbuild Groupbuild". The rules are as follows:
>Have a build that you never got to finish for a previous groupbuild? Only started building recently and sad you missed out on a theme from 4-5 years ago? Now's an opportunity to get that build done!
>Your build must conform to at least one of the previous 19 Groupbuild themes and the rules of that groupbuild, though you can mix together elements of other past groupbuilds (ie: a Melee Zaku or a mecha musume sniper)
>You must detail what theme(s) your build is going for when you submit your build.
>You can't submit a touched-up version of a previous groupbuild entry, but you can build something that fits alongside your past build (ie: a 2nd squad member for an entry to the GM groupbuild or a mid-season upgrade/powered up version of the same suit) so long as you showcase both the old and new builds in a few photos.

It's the EW equivalent of the non-upgraded version. The one in EW is the DS Hell, the upgraded version.
The Roulette unit is from one of the comics, IIRC.

I'm doing a straight build so do i panel lining before or after top coating?
Also i seen some people saying the ink from Tamiya panel line or Gundam marker will make the plastic cracked, is this true?

As a rule of thumb, enamel paints should never go directly on plastic, since they'll damage it.
Also you'll get poor results if you use panel washes on a surface that's too rough, since the paint has a harder time spreading on those.

I usually do: paint -> gloss coat -> decals & panel lines -> matte coat

Somewhat true. Its nit so much the panel liner on the plastic, but in-between the seams that causes problems. Option A is to panel lone the parts on the runners or after cutting parts off. Option B is to panel line after a gloss coat but sometimes the liner can still run into a seam and fuck something up.

If you don't plan on painting anything else you might as well mix your own wash with acrylic paint and thinner and apply it after snapping together the model.

good tool rec, but I got the uStar one.
seems to be slightly worse than the DSPIAE version because of a different less articulate ball action and added bulkiness, still very nice, wish I had this earlier in this project.

I got this figure, and the hair is soft but I just can't seem to fit it over the head, much less get the plastic on the back into place on it. Should I try softening it with hot water, and if so how long. Only other thing I could try is gluing it in place, but I don't really want to do that because there's the whole LED gimmick of the kit.

It's not the ink, it's the thinner used in the ink. It causes plastic to become brittle and in extreme cases, crack. The lining pen Gundam markers are safe for plastic, but the pour type are not, as it'sthe same as Tamiya. Just about any other ink you find is going to be the same, the thinner will fuck plastic up.

I don't know why gunpla shit just doesn't have acrylic inks.

enamel panel liner will generally not randomly crack polystyrene. it will crack stressed polystyrene however. if you like before assembly (on sprues) you will never have any issues with cracking (or just be conscious of any part shoved directly on a peg, like shoulder spikes and faceplates).
ABS however should never have enamels directly applied to it. it will become brittle and crack.

the gundam panel liner that comes with the classic Gundam Marker set warns that it can cause cracks in ABS plastic, so always check your runners for that. I have some calligraphy pens that I like to use for panel lining and they work a treat on anything.

Skill issue question: I have the RG 78, the decals that come with it I probably won't use anyway, however how do people apply decals that are super tiny? Like less than 1mm.
23, 24 and 25 for example are just tiny little silver lines.

How bad of an idea is it to mask everything except the panel lines and then airbrush the panel lines on?

I know how to airbrush lacquers (mostly) but I know nothing about hand-painting acrylics

I need to do gold panel lines and don't have any markers that can do it. This particular kit doesn't have a ton of panel lines thankfully.

That seems fucking insane. Can't you just topcoat the entire thing and then carefully paint in the gold panel lines with a small brush while cleaning up with paint thinner where you overspill?
Or you could dillute whatever gold color you have and let it flow into the panel lines.
Masking the entire kit with the level of precision needed for that plan seems like a huge waste of time. You'll have the entire thing panel-lined by hand twice until youre done masking everything.

nta but it is molded and shipped this way so likely has very minimal stress to the part, when it is clipped out it could introduce some minuscule cracks and fissures that might not be visible to the eye.
I have had a few models that the runner was just broken and quite a few that I have clipped with some big stress marks.
I imagine the issue occurs when the paint gets into places where it shouldn't be and exacerbates things.

you don't. it's just the theorietically least stressed state you could get the parts in. however it's fine to line cleaned up parts before assembly, and most assembled parts. just be cognizant of lining parts that are small and friction fit.

So I finally gave weathering a shot.
Results could be worse but could also be better. I feel like I should've given it an all over wash, since the colours are still kinda bright, and in some places I could've tried making the scratches a bit more three dimensional.
What else needs improval?

Side shot so you can see my attempt at creating a rust effect.
Basically I painted some dark spots where I wanted the rust, added some white pigment directly onto the wet surface and painted yellow over the pigment.

So I went to a craft store to get some small saw for my still on hold kit bashing project

I saw some curved knife like those in the image

Are they better in cutting stuff like left over nubs?

Their main advantage is that their cuts can curve, though that is not really important for shaving nubs.
I still use curved blades anyway since their tips are less prone to snapping off due to the geometry.

Steel PE was hard to cut, knife blade needed replacement after 10 cuts or so.
Brass PE is easy to cut and bend. So easy that the shit bends and deforms if you exhale too hard in its general direction.

you only need a mask when sanding, and really you don't actually need one if you're wet sanding as long as you keep it constantly wet (and very wet, not just damp). the wetness clumps up the dust and stops it flying about in the air. you'd also have to make sure the sanded material gets trapped on a towel or something so it doesn't kick up into the air when it dries out. or, you could just wear a mask, obviously.
other types of working with it (drilling, knifing, etc) don't create small enough particles to be an issue. unless you're using a powered drill or dremel you're fine.
the dust being harmful is not a meme, but it's only when it's extremely fine particulate being kicked up into the air that dangerous

the 2.0 has more interesting internal frame, has a core fighter, comes with the beam javelin, super napalm and gundam hammer.
the origin ver has a shoulder cannon, more torso articulation, sliding leg armor, a second (different beam rifle) and some vulcan effect parts.
both have crazy good articulation and it entirely comes down to aesthetic preference.

No, because it will bleach/yellow the cabinet and everything in it over time. There is a reason they make UV-blocking topcoats and advise to keep stuff out of direct sunlight.

Also "slight" has to be strong enough to light up the paint or it will be 100% meaningless and you do need a certain brightness to light up the paint.

a shitty little blacklight puts out very low intensity UV light, and within that it's putting in wide wavelength (usually around 390nm) UV (UV-A). sunlight contains a large amount of UV-C (280-100nm) and that's what actually causes damage. your dinky little blacklight (especially modern LED blacklights) will do no noticable damage to plastic.

Nope, a few months to a year is generally enough to notice damage.

But, this being a display cabinet, you would want the light to be reasonably away from the things you are trying to display and covering a reasonably wide area, and that means you are looking at at least 10-20W UV source, which is not "dinky".

The alternative would be UV lasers (which *are* a thing), pointing at exactly the patches of paint you want to light up, but good luck with that setup.

That said, the length of time matters. IF you're only doing it like an hour or two a day, it's not going to discolor (noticeably) for 5-10 years.
In a decade, it's possible the plastic will oxidize enough to the point that it'll shift colors from air alone, and even start leaking plasticizers.

You'll never know when/if this shit will happen or what even did it in the first place.

Life is short, especially consumer goods, so enjoy it while you can.

There were a ton of entries this year and the average skill level has increased again as people get more practice. Through some of the notable entries into a big pic instead of spamming the thread with pics.

The big nightengale was most peoples favorite and got best in category. Also for some reason it was put into "best 1/100 AU" even though it was the hg nightengale as a base and the judges didn't bother moving it to the correct category. Fantastic job on it though.

The hg Xekueins was my favorite though, great paint job on it.

Finished my Hezel II TR-121-2 Decided to go with the yellow pinstripe design and was really fun trying to get it right. The SIMP pro waterslides are a bit over sized, but it seems like the tend to be that way anyways with other waterslide sets they make as well.
Colors used were as follows,
Mr.Color 58 Oarnge Yellow
Mr.Color 326 Blue FS15044
Mr.Color 316 White FS17875
E7 B-15 Dark Grey (cold)
Anchoret 007 Ferrari Red
Dspiae G-21 Leaf Green
Mix of Mr.color 326 and Modo Color M-017 Pure Purple to achieve the purple.

For gluing clear parts, says right on the bottle.

I have a similar glue by Sujiborido, it's kinda rubbery but does the job when I need to glue a piece of clear plastic (like that window in front of the monoeye) that CA cement won't bind to.

yeah it's nowhere near as bad as people in these threads hype it up to be, it's really only a serious concern if you're spraying tons of the stuff constantly (e.g. in a paint shop where you're spraying 9-5 5 days a week for years on end) or sticking your nose in the thinner bottle and huffing it on the regular. it's definitely a good idea to have good airflow through the room, but nobody has ever had any major health complications from spraying a few ml of paint on models every few days

Depends on the resin, regular one is quite strong, 100% organic onions one is tolerable but still annoying.
I used to haul the printer to my spray booth, now I have an exhaust duct running to where the printer is and the fume problem is solved.

I have purchased some Tamiya panel liner because it looks easier than shaky handing the fine tip markers, however I am a snap shitter and do not plan on painting my kit.

You will be ok if you pay attention to a few things.

1. Do not use it on ABS plastic. It will melt. You can usually see printed in the backs of runners what type of plastic they are.

2. Use it sparingly. Do not let it pool or leave big amounts that will take a long time to dry, this is what weakens plastic. Keep q-tips on hand to swab or wipe up excess. Don't worry if the q-tip wipes away too much, just do apply liner again after letting it dry. It's better than breakage.

3. Only line single pieces, do not assemble pieces first then line. This is because panel liner can seep into crevices between pieces and then weaken the plastic from within.

Following the above advice, I tend to wait 20-45 minutes to do the initial cleanup on the lines. Some stuff I'll end up doing a couple times. The Portanova Space Type is a good example of that, I ended up lining some parts of it twice to get it to stick well. Also generally speaking, as long as you do the initial cleanup within 24r hours you're good supposing the part wasn't just slathered in the stuff and dripping with it.

Personally I think I see some difference in the level of matte or shine you get. Like if I go matte topcoat over matte paint, it seems more matte than if I went over gloss. But that might just be my own pickiness. If you don't have a direct comparison in front of you or are not that picky, you probably will never notice.

Yes, although some flat colors (Tamiya) have nicer matte look than the topcoat can provide.

It will not "eat" the kit, but it can crack the kit if you do it incorrectly. BTW, the whole coating thing doesn't really help against cracking, you can crack a fully painted kit just as easily as an unpainted one. The important part is never let panel liner seep into peg/hole connections or joints and never let it touch plastic that is discolored due to mechanical stress. Incidentally, the best cure against mechanical stress is plastic cement. If you want to use panel liner, consider cementing parts you would otherwise just snap together.

You can mix resins, especially within brands. Pick up some Resione resins
I use m58 resin and it's definitely on the more rigid side but m68 is more flexible like the old ABS bandai used in old MGs. Pic related is printed in m58. It's fairly tough and has some give before breaking, but I've never drilled it, although I'm confident it would drill fairly well. M68 might be more useful based on this video

The resin I am using now handles very much like polystone, which is brittle but doesn't lean and that is a desirable quality for the project I am working on.

I don't know how creep affects these resins but you can design around that by adding holes for metal inserts if you're worried about them leaning over, a lot of anime figures do that for top heavy figures.

Why does the entry grade RX-78-2 have the worst knee joints on any action figure in the entire history of action figures and models? Dollar store toys are made better it’s like they’re designed to fail. I’ve put top coat on them and they got loose again. I put clear nail polish on them and they got loose again. I am not going to panel lining the 2 kits, but should I at least panel the MG head?

Just the age of the MG it shows the improvement the RG has over it- the open vent and proper expose side head vents

But seriously though I think the RG body shape is really funky and I don't particularly like it

Of course you wear an actual respirator; it's also worth noting that I use a spray booth, and any thinner soaked rags or discarded paper towels get thrown into a small garbage bag and taken to the trash after the painting/cleaning is done.

Any lingering fumes or vapors are gone after letting the booth run for a few minutes and then just opening the window for a few more.

anyways had the most angry paint session of my life, tore off the shitty gay garbage ruined paint down to the plastic and repainted it, this time with clear kote(enamel), still dulls and "grainifies" it but it's already way better and I'll give it time since it's enamel.

Alclad clear kote is enamel. It will decrease the quality of the metallic. It will also preclude you from using enamel washes over it.

Aqua gloss is only good for killing airbrushes as far as I know.

There is no need to clear coat Alclad for masking, especially when masking with fluid.

Alclad Polished Aluminum is 99% as good as Chrome but much more durable.

On a side note, if you haven't polished your surface with 8000-10000grit, it's a waste of Alclad Chrome. What you have would have looked just as good with Alclad Airframe Aluminum or Alclad HiSpeed Silver with none of the fuss.
