Toy gun laws and taxes have gotten screwier overtime. More so in Japan after that assassination a couple of years back. It's not even fear so much as cost and government regulation. MP5 Megatron was a fucking mess with orange cap, fines, open box inspections, and he was 18 years ago when the laws were much more lax. Also Siege/Earthrise Megs mold has shown most don't give a shit about his old gun mode and are completely willing to move past it. The juice just isn't worth the squeeze for the very few of you that want to die on that hill.

This is one of those things where I wish an ambitious third party would make a KO Megatron that transforms into a 1:1 scale replica of a Walther P38 but have the gun mode featured nowhere on the box while shipping it in robot mode. I'm certain some chaos would ensue.

back in 2006 they had to nerf up a lot more than people wanted in the states, the originally planned deco went to Japan with chrome in 2008, but as of 2012 Japan has radically changed their laws on toy guns where even the 06 America deco wouldn't be allowed and after Shinzo Abe assassination last year it's a safe bet things are going to get cracked down harder

On the subject of compromise I genuinely liked the TR Megatron that was both tank and fighter jet, both modes seem to fit him nicely and the robot mode didn't look too bad either.
I still prefer him as a gun but at least that one was unique.

What we really needed is a Core Class Megatron that transforms into a gun instead of a tank like his Kingdom toy and complete with a silencer and a 5mm grip. It'll be fuckhuge for sure but a Voyager Class at the minimum can hold him without looking odd.

I'd take a Megs from Perceptor and just ignore the Microscope mode. Or just modify Shockwave and let them share a mold. But then I have a lot of interest in weird retools (my dream is a Soundwave from Blaster)

Counter-idea: Mobile artillery. It's a gun, technically, it still needs crew to operate (like Meg's gun mode) but packs a more devastating punch than a fusion-powered walther and doesn't require any mass-shifting.

I like the TR one too. I'm >>10342656 and Megatron from Blitzwing is a really fun idea. They could even do one with the Skywarp deco for the jet.

Another one I've kind of always wanted is a Starscream from Blitzwing, with the idea being that he took on a second altmode to present himself as a successor to Megatron.

Shockwave proves that is possible with Core Class and so does Freezer. Now granted Shockwave is a horizontally thick Sci-fi gun and Freezer has his limbs connected and folded all to the back while his upper body becomes a barrel. So for Megatron who is a vertically thick gun I say his torso and one of his legs should become the barrel while his other leg becomes the stock. It will have a lot of artistic liberties and won't really resemble a Walther P38 with a stock like that but it's the closest I can imagine.

The only locomotive anywhere near me is on display as a museum piece. I'd be even more suspicious of parked purple Space Shuttle if I saw one. Honestly only some of the Decepticons seem to give a shit about subterfuge, Soundwave and his crew mainly. The Seekers scream into your airspace and start blowing shit up, the triple changers are big bruisers, the Constructicons won't even acknowledge indigenous fauna unless it gets in their way, Predacons/Terrorcons don't even bother with an attempted disguise. The Stunticons are the only cons I can think of who can casually pass through human cities unnoticed, I'd say Runamock and Runabout too but they'd fuck up everything and get noticed fast.

I said locomotive, as in the old style steam engine Astrotrain turns into. There's one of those on display in my town, it's an antique. If you want to make Astrotrain a more contemporary/modern train engine that's okay, albeit a tad boring in comparison. Modern trains are just kind of boxy carts.

They have, I've got the Classics mold. Even so I think I like him better as a vintage train VS a sleek modern one, there's just more visually going on and the design looks cooler. Bullet trains are sleek and futuristic looking but they don't have much going on, see the Railracer trio from RiD. In between you've got TR Astrotrain, where he's some kind of battle platform thing? I kind of like it but its certainly weird.

If Earthrise Starscream being used for SS86 was any indicator, I'd guess that we are looking at a reissue of the Siege/Earthrise mold with maybe the addition of the Walther P-38 piece from the Centurian Drone set.

The TR one was a legit great mold and is still my favorite triple changer. The only thing that really brought it down was the shit plastic and awful stickers on the TR versions; the LG G2 tank Megs really brought out the mold's true potential, in my opinion.

It's just fun to have a robot toy that can turn into a gun, the same way it's fun to have transformers that can turn into everyday appliances, like Soundwave and Blaster (even if they're dated). I agree that it makes no sense story-wise and a tank mode makes way more sense for a the leader of a brutal, warlike faction to have, but it's all in service for toys, anon, and I just want a robot gun toy.

G2 Megatron and his body shape should have been the default since the day when they couldn't do the gun anymore. The shoulder canon and big broad chest has way more presence than anything they've made aping G1. Got it right the first time.

Galaxy Force Terashaver (renamed 'Cybertron Brimstone' for the Hasbro release). Mine is the Takara version, who's more grey than the tan-ish color of the Western release, and his Cyber key doesn't have a code printed on it.
He's pretty neat - his beast neck, arms/beast feet have good range and his talons/fingers can open and close. his wings don't do much other than the basic up/down motion, but his Cyber Key deploys a pair of big blades that work in both modes. Robot mode is a little awkward-looking because his beast body basically stays horizontal while the rest of him folds down under it, and his legs are asymmetrical, but he still looks pretty cool and even manages to have waist rotation despite it looking so skinny. I wish he came with a gun or some sort of handheld weapon (though between his talons and his wing blades, I guess he doesn't really NEED anything), but otherwise he's pretty great. I've been keeping him perched on top of Starscream's throne (those claws let him hold on pretty securely), and he pairs well with my two new Terrorsaurs, old Lazeorbeak and various other pterosaur Battle Masters.

actually most normal transformers could become shortstacks if they just changed the typical limb-unfoldery so that the thicker part of the limb's at the top, making them thick limbs that taper, not thin limbs with big beefy bracers and greaves.

The best way to get around that is to just make the RED Megatron (which doesn't transform but is G1 accurate) the Studio Series Megatron and include a super detailed/unique gun Megatron accessory that can fit into most toy hands ala Legends Megatron coming with a gun mode accessory.

I think the biggest problem with G2 was that they didn't really have a cartoon to go with it. The toys are at least as good as the G1 ones, but I had no attachment to them.

On a different note, remembering the Masterpiece Beast Wars sub-line, if Primal has a DX Version with some homage weaponry from his old toy and some other versions of past figures coming with parts recreating some iconic cartoon scenes, do you think Dinobot needs a DX Version with accessories to replicate scenes from Season 2 of Beast Wars, from custom blasters and ammo belt from Coming of the Fuzors to the Vok Disk and parts recreating his last stand in Code of Hero? Seeing Dinobot's last stand made me think he needs an expanded version like some of the more infamous Transformers in the entire line.

Now that I'm back, I can do both. Let's start with the Junkion.
Crashbar's got all the standard articulation (or rather, the articulation that SHOULD be standard at this point) that one could expect - rotating wrists, hips, ankle rockers, and so on. His weapons include two 'gravity Cannons', and his detachable exhaust pipes can be used as melee weapons. His robot mode has some asymmetry going on with his legs (similar to Terashaver/Brimstone who I posted earlier), and his rear motorcycle tire (located on the back of his right leg in robot mode) actually detaches and becomes a bladed shuriken as one of his two 'Evo-Fusion' gimmicks; his second gimmick (which I haven't used yet) is to split apart and become a Weaponizer. Specifically, his head, guns, pipes, and both of his legs below the knee detach from his torso, and his instructions show a suggested way to combine these bits with Scraphook, though there's enough 5mm holes on his body that it shouldn't be too hard to come up with your own combinations. What makes this guy and Scraphook better than the Siege Weaponizers is that you can actually transform them without partsforming them (well, mostly. The weapons and exhaust pipes on both bots need to be removed and rearranged, but the main components do not and still behave like a normal Transformer).

Transformation to motorcycle mode is different from Wreck-Gar's and Iguanus'. Crashbar's left leg becomes his front wheel, handlebars, and gas tank, while his right one becomes his rear tire and seat. His entire upper torso becomes his engine block and hangs off from under the bike, his Gravity Cannons become his saddlebag compartments, and his exhaust pipes hide his hands; while he has no kickstand, the pegs on his exhaust pipes hang low enough to the ground that he can balance on one without tilting over too much, and you can still roll him around for quite a bit before he settles onto one peg/stand or the other. It's actually one of the more convincing motorcycle modes that I've seen so far, though I wish the handlebars had been a bit longer.

He's a bit too small for other Deluxes to ride, including Scraphook; however, he's actually the perfect size for Core or Legends sized characters. Again, though, his handlebars are too short for anyone to actually grab onto, but his exhaust pipes make good 'pedals' for characters' legs to rest on, letting them sit pretty securely without too much hassle.
Both Crashbar and Scraphook are quite a bit smaller than SS86 Wreck-Gar (as to be expected, since they're only Deluxes), so they'll stand out a bit if you try to display them with him, but Crashbar's still fun and seems like he'd be a decent 'bot to army build, for those who want their own Junkion motorcycle gang.

Now for dragon Megatron. He's the one I was looking forward to the most out of the three, and aside from the robot mode face sculpt, he doesn't disappoint. He's a lot bigger and less lanky in both modes than the promotional pictures made him out to be, which is a good thing. His neck and tail are nice and flexible (though I wish the tail were a tiny bit longer),his arms and wrists can move around a bit, and he's got nice, big wings that can fold up. Mine is the newly-reissued version of him, and while I remember hearing that there was an issue with the previous version having the wing blades attached upside-down (like the initial release of Galvatron's shoulders), this version seems to have corrected the problem.

Robot mode is nice, and I like the way the dragon hands fold into the chest to form the gold marks on it. Again, he looks a lot less lanky in-hand than his stock photography makes him out to be, plus proper posing makes him look even better. He's got working lightpiping in his eyes, but it's a little weird - because most of his eyes are painted purple, only the sclera light up with a fiery orange glow, giving him an almost demonic look. As this rerelease is part of the Evolution line, his Evo-Fusion gimmick is...he can hold his fire effect piece like a club. Yeah, not sure how one holds a stream of fire, and it's really grasping as hard as Twincast's 'put the gun on his back' attempt, but it's not like he really needed anything else anyway.

Of the three bots I just got, this guy is definitely my favorite. But then again, I'm biased for dragons. And BW Megatron. And Megatrons who turn into dragons. My only issues with him are the stumpy tail (which I've already found an upgrade kit to replace) and the fact that his robot head doesn't actually look like Megatron (I'm still convinced we got a T-Wrecks situation here with Megatron ending up with a headsculpt intended for the inevitable Cryotek repaint instead of his own - but again, there are upgrade kits that can fix this). He certainly has a commanding presence in both modes, and can look pretty Final Boss-y with the right posing. For anyone who was interested in him the first time around but hesitant to pull the trigger, I suggest you get him, even if it's just for the badass dragon mode.

I'm glad you're enjoying him so much but I just keep looking at pics and it looks so off. Especially that long lanky neck with an almost disconnected pushed back connection at the base, not to mention the lack of vac metal and shading and translucent wings. I guess my expectations were too high considering how much I love the original. I've picked up every other Kingdom/Legacy Beast Wars remake and really enjoy them but for me Legacy Dragon Megatron just missed the mark.

Tarn will probably be added to another wave ? I don't know, but I must say I didn't really like mine. The shoulder articulation hampers a lot of poses with the cannons and make the figure pretty frustrating, which is too bad because apart from that it's pretty perfect, but those shoulders really are the worst. Lio Convoy may be more flawed, but he's a much more fun figure to handle, I feel.

That little factoid helped me sort this out so thanks a bunch. I researched the planet leaders since I'm not as familiar with the Unicron Trilogy. It looks like they're all unique characters who don't really represent an alternate universe of an existing character.
Nitro Convoy's design looks like it was ported to Beast Wars: Uprising and Animated. G1 has Override who is a Triggerbot motorcycle and is clearly a different character.
Flame Convoy is definitely not a renamed Scourge from G1 or Scourge (Black Convoy) from RID 2001/ROTB.
Live Convoy looks like he was the source for the Bay Universe comic Evac and BWU Evac.
Megalo Convoy was the name of a representative on the Convoy Council in Beast Wars Neo, predating Galaxy Force Megalo Convoy but other than name (and the fact that BWN Megalo Convoy doesn't have a toy) tells me that he's an altogether different idea than Metroplex.
Just trying to decide where to draw the lines on a figure collection and toy headcanon. Still brainstorming rules for a wargame to use them all, too.

The neck is on balljoints, so it's certainly possible to remove a segment if you think it looks too long (at the cost of some articulation). Personally, I don't think it's the neck that's too long (compared to the old toy, which actually had a LONGER neck. It IS too long for his show model) as much as it is the tail is too small and offsets it by comparison. Yeah, we were never going to get vac metal. it would have been nice if they had done some metallic paint, but what we got still doesn't look too bad. he DOES still have that shading/gradient look to him, but it looks a bit different because they actually redid the proportions for his beast belly and chest, which (in my opinion) looks better now because it's a single, cohesive piece. Also, his wings ARE still translucent (though much more opaque) and still have all the same details sculpted onto them - they're just made of a different kind of plastic now and are much thinner. My camera's pretty bad, but look closely at pic related - you can vaguely make out the black patterns of the Generations Selects boxes through them, and you can see the overlapping wing segments through each other.

There are some things from the old toy that I prefer - the darker purples, the black details that are completely absent on the new one, and (obviously) the vac metal that we all knew we weren't getting when he was announced, but there's also plenty on the new toy that I actually like better. For starters, he's actually a lot closer to his show proportions in both modes now, stumpy tail and long neck aside (on the show, he actually had a long tail that shrank when he transformed, and his dragon neck was around the same length of his right robot arm). The Legacy Megatron's robot mode also actually has a real chest now instead of just being a massive box with the front completely dominated by that dome/cockpit thing. His robot head hides much better now in dragon mode, and he's got much better articulation across the board. Really, my only big complaint with the new look is the robot face; otherwise he's a pretty decent upgrade from the old toy and has a fun transformation scheme - we could have got much, much worse (looking at you, Rhinox and Laser Prime). I understand that he might not be 'perfect', but he really is a good toy, and i think you'd enjoy him if you gave him a chance.

Me too, but that's also because I love toy only designs. This has often been the best part of the franchise, in particular from the movies. Voyager Seaspray, Mindwipe, Skystalker, Wreckage, the whole ROTF/HFTD Scout line just to name a few are still awesome toys to this day and while these are still big name characters, the fact that their designs will only appear as toys is super fun to me.

Redoing Optimus again after ER basically nailed is interesting. ER has sucky legs and a few other problems that can be fixed. But starting from scratch seems iffy. There's room to improve, but will they?

Why would every new Seeker HAVE to be the Earthrise mold? I think they're the only two left that should be the Tetrajet mold. Nacelle is a funny case, his botcon toy made him a conehead, but we've never seen a Cybertronian mode for a conehead (That I can think of.) ER was sort of the only option for Nacelle.

And with that, I'm officially done collecting Transformers, outside of maybe grabbing Legacy Armada OP and the occasional cool beast, if that. Frankly, I'm glad they did this to my boy Magnus. I can finally move on. I'm tired of buying the same shit I owned or saw on television 12+ years ago but "with ankle tilts!". And now they are scraping the bottom of the barrel for shit no one cared about 26 years ago too. They are so desperate it's funny. I don't even care if the upcoming G1 or Animated or UT shit or Bayshit ends up being good. When will the endless recycling of the past end? I have realized that the "perfect" (insert character here) doesn't exist, and there's no point in chasing it anymore.

After the movie comes out, I'm closing the book permanently on my days as a Transformers collector/fan. It doesn't spark joy anymore, and makes me feel like an addict. How many different fucking Optimus Primes do I need, anyway? When is enough Transformers enough? My childhood was great, and Transformers helped make it that way. I will always be thankful for that, but it's time to let the past die. The journey has to end somewhere. It was fun while it lasted...most of the time.

After literal minutes of play time I can say that if you want a toy of a burly cat-themed warrior, then Cheetor might work out for you.
Transformation is super simple like you'd expect a Cheetor to be.
Wild how they thought locking the shoulder in place in beast mode was a good idea but you can just unpeg them without breaking up the sculpt too much.
He's a what you see is what you get type of toy.

Only complaint I have beyond that is I wish his knees and elbows bent a bit deep than 90 degrees.

agreed, i thought that was clever. it extends the torso out, which is always a trick with beastformers since humanoids have VERY short torsos by animal standards. us and giraffes basically, we have the monopoly on that.
the rear leg transformation also seems.. theoretically clever? but the execution leaves a lot to want. would it have killed them to make his robot feet not little nubs?

Nope. You're thinking of the original toy, which had the lower half of the dragon belly attached to it. The new one's arm folds up and pegs into the chest cavity facing upwards, with the wrist dislocating and ending up right in the middle, directly under his left pauldron and forming the base of his neck. The gold panel unfolds from the pauldron itself and comes down to cover the fist.

His proportions are actually the same as his show model's now. The thing is, Hasbro can't pose for shit - TM2 Megatron never stood with his legs together, there was always a gap even when he was in a neutral pose, which is why his stock photography looks so weird. Here's my shitty attempt at matching the toy to a scene from the last episode of the cartoon. I couldn't get the camera low enough, and I didn't tilt his chest forward quite enough, but you can see they're pretty close - again, Megatron was never seen standing with his legs completely straight and together, so posing him with them slightly parted and giving him a slight hunch makes him look more or less perfect..

Tigatron was in and out a few times - at one point Steven wanted Cheetor to have Tigatron’s personality instead, which led to the hybrid design that the toy was based off. In the end it didn’t even matter anyway, since the Maximals are mostly in beast modes and practically non-characters with none of their original personalities.

3H comics tweaked his face slightly to make him not look like an exact clone of Megatron, even though his toy literally was just a repaint. If Hasbro is indeed planning on redecoing TM2 Megatron into Cryotek, I wouldn't be surprised if they gave him a new face sculpt based on his comic appearance, the way they were supposed to give T-Wrecks a new face sculpt (yeah, it was just a grimace, but it would still have been different from the default Megatron face). That the new toy's face looks almost EXACTLY like the 3H face for Cryotek - right down to the prominent nasolabial folds that Megatron never had - makes it apparent that it's not supposed to be Megatron. We just got it backwards this time - they put the alt face on the default Megatron body instead of the default face on the recolored body. Bit weird that they didn't swap it for the reissue, though.

that was probably the most interesting creative turn that beast wars took
some of them, their bodies don't change that much. rhinox is clearly a big bulky guy made of rhino bits (in fact his visible rhino feet that become his hands and feet almost look TOO thick), Primal is a gorilla with longer legs unfolding from his torso, etc..
but others change significantly and gain these uncharacteristically thick and almost MUSCULAR robot bodies despite lithe beast modes (terrorsaur and dinobot for sure)

My problems with Scorponok are that he is based on his Earthrise/Rebirth look (makes sense desu considering the toyline) but I massively prefer his Headmasters look with the clear visor. Granted that is more personal taste thank an actual knock against the figure.

When will they just make Megatron a field gun? It solves the issues of toy gun and “he can’t fire himself”, but wouldn’t need too many parts that intrude on the robot mode.

I get where you are coming from anon but sadly their is no way to fix this in a way that would make everyone happy or at least complacent like we saw with Shockwaves "submarine"/"Spaceship" mode because that was just his laser gun mode upside down. See that's the issue, you are thinkin what would be cool to you much like how some find his tank cool or his OG mode cool. some people are pretty flexible and will like anything as long as it executed right, but others want whatever is canon and to hell with the rest, and sadly that group is the vast majority which is likely why megs has stayed a tank since that has been his G2 alt onward, the consistency is the game.
It's a safe bet that if we get a SS86 Megs it will turn into a tank. And I bet anything they will add salt to those fans that want the Walther P38 by giving him the Attack on the Shuttle backdrop like Ratchet and Ironhide have(the only scene in the film where he turnned into the gun)

Well, look at it this way; he was NEVER going to be a gun. It's just not in the cards and never will be again. Putting him in Studio Series at least gives them a chance to focus on making a more G1-accurate bot mode, which is what most of the shelf-jockeys here would have him displayed as 99.9% of the time, anyway.

Personally, I like tank Megatrons, so I'm just glad this means he gets another attempt after the embarrassment of the Earthrise version.

Honestly, I'd be 100% okay if the Magnus combo worked Star Saber style like the PE add-on cab, where it just compacts into a cube and wedges into the torso. It seems much more workable at a retail-level budget.

In the case of Transformers, it was a cartoon to go with the toys. You know you can enjoy a cartoon without worshiping it and treating it as some kind of absolute peak standard, right? Because they shoehorned in a base mode under the assumption they’d retool it into Thunderclash later/needed all the combiner parts to form something vaguely coherent in Motormaster mode. Of course, the end result is that Menasor has a weird looking gun and a leftover piece that does nothing. You could use the gun as a turret, but for Menasor that kinda looks goofy, frankly. It’s also not compatible with blast effects, for whatever baffling reason.

If they did it as a Studio Series, I could see the control harness being included as its own separate accessory (though it would obviously only be usable in robot mode and would need to fit over his head). If it were just a regular release, then they'd likely just leave it out entirely. There's no way to make his wings turn into it on the new mold without retooling them so that they'd swing around over the rest of his body, and he would still need the helmet and extra arms to be show-accurate.

While we're on the topic of BM Megatron, I'd personally like to see a modern attempt at Savage Noble/'Beast Changer' - preferably one that doesn't rely on partsforming to work this time around.

I was thinking Botanica might have been interesting, but then I remembered both her modes are about equal and instead wanted to make something like Biollante instead for one of the modes so the two are more distinct, then remembered that Botbots had multiple dinosaur/dragons made out of plant material and it would be better to make a large-scale version of one of those guys instead.

Yeah, Botanica is overdue for an actual toy, especially now that Hasbro has been making modernized versions of literal who's and repaints that never formally existed. She would most definitely need a reimagined alt mode, though, given how similar it was to her robot mode (seriously, I had so much trouble telling which mode was supposed to be which).

Studio Series 86 is just a filler run anyway of shit they don't get in the mainline, Grimlock, Jazz, Scourge/sweep and others have unnecessary and not screen accurate 5mm ports that would only be there for the use of the izers that were in wfc and legacy trilogy. Hasbro dosn't give a shit about consistency in their lines, for fucksakes they put Cosmos, the fat little UFO. in the racing subline and they put Rodimus Prime in the Beast Wars focused subline.

You see Tank Megs in Studio series as some sort of mismatch to the brand, Hasbro just see's it a Tuesday.

Apparently, Hasbro fucked up the clearance on the new Skyquake mold, causing the issue with the noscone not collapsing fully for the torso. People on other sites are cutting into a section so the landing gear folds properly for the torso connection, but I do not advice doing that area uses strong, flexible plastic and has regular plastic running through it, so you run the risk of breaking that section. If you want the normal transformation, it's safer to cut the wheel from the front landing gear.
