Depends on the complexity of the shape, but unless it's a literal ball or a cube, you are most likely better off painting individual pieces if uniform coverage is important to you.

It's more that if I have to varnish individual pieces, I probably just won't bother. The appeal of this whole thing to me over warhammer is that I don't have to fuck around with subassemblies and the models are already "basecoated" via the colored plastic, so I can just enjoy the build and then do some light detailing at the end.

Time to eat my own dogfood/follow my own advice.

The kit instructions (and references) tell me to attach these pipes to the front and back of the funnel, while PE instructions tell me to discard them, which would make the model somewhat inaccurate.

So, this is what combining things that weren't meant to be combined looks like.

I realized that some of the participant of the previous group build post here regularly over /m/, so I am posting the mascot progress design here in case they want to find it.
Erika and Reginlief Bluejay and Spider can be considered done.
20 commemorative Tsuguri and Gustrav Karl needs some clean up and banner logo added in. The Reginlief one will be worked on soon.
I would like Gustav Karl anon to choose between the Turtle and the beetle design of the mascot, but they can suggest other animal if they wishes.

In USD
150 on airbrush, 150 on compressor, 150 on spray booth, respirator like 50. You can 100% get a cheaper airbrush, compressor, and booth if you want.
I bought a bunch of shit I didn't need as well (didn't know i didn't need them)
If you want to do lacquers the Mr Color line is a fantastic place to start
You should be able to get a ton of colors, primer, clear coat for under 100 bucks.
For thinner get mr leveling thinner, use this as your thinner for 99% of things
The other thinner you want is mr rapid thinner, this is used almost exclusively for metallics
For cleaners just get hardware store lacquer thinner, its like 10 bucks and comes in big sizes. Cleans it out amazingly and is cheaper than hobby branded cleaners.
You'll probably want some cheap, but not dollar store cheap, brushes for mixing or cleaning.
Although I use gun cleaning cotton swabs for mixing and cleaning most of the time. You can get a pack of a couple hundred for like 15 bucks and don't have to worry about cleaning them afterwards just throw them out
A paint pot isn't totally necessary but is handy
Just grab a cheap like 6 dollar airbrush cleaning kit that has the sharp needle for cleaning the nozzle and the little like wire brush things for cleaning parts as well when you do a deep clean.
All in all it was like 700 for everything but you can definitely do it for like half the price with cheaper stuff
If you want to do acrylics (I recommend against it) that will vary by brand on thinners. But you can just use 91% or higher isopropyl alcohol for cleaning that
Large wall of text but hopefully it helps. It was daunting for me at first but I think this is everything you need. Everything else is extra.

Worst advice of the year award.

The only thing that needs to go into the nozzle is the needle of the airbrush, otherwise it will get deformed by a cheap badly machined cleaning needle and then you'll get spitting, spray pattern going whack etc etc.
Wire brush can strip the coating from the inside of the needle channel then you can get rust, paint discoloration, etc.

If you spent $100+ on an airbrush, spend another $20-30 on proper cleaning tools.

Procon Boy Platinum 0.3 is a stripped down Iwata HP-CH. It is not easy to clean and you will realize that soon enough.

HP-CS is most recommended for a reason.

HVAC booster fans have never failed me. They are designed to run continuously for many hours and tolerate dust that flies into them, they are easy to install into a duct.
They are also cheap and you can get them in any hardware store.

>I know this topic has come up in the past but it needs to be discussed again. I friend of mine built his own spray paint booth from a kitchen stove exhaust hood that he was using in his garage. Last night he was using it when it caught on fire. He has burns on his chest, arms, face and head. His wife told me he has no eyebrows, eye lashes or hair left on his head. He also wears contact lenses which melted in his eyes from the fire. He's in pretty bad shape and was transferred to a Shriners burns hospital in Boston. He was using Testors rattle can enamel on an airplane model that he was building.

In fairness, spray booths are made for an airbrush that will never output the amount of paint a spraycan would.
Even leaving the explosion issue aside, very few (and rather expensive) high CFM fans are capable of extracting the spraycan output before it blows back into your room.

As for the dude who burned his contacts into his eyes, I'm thinking there were other things he shouldn't have done aside from using a kitchen hood fan.<div class="xa23b"><span class="xa23t"></span><span class="xa23i"></span></div>

I've been using setup in >>10355238 pic related for like 5 years before I rebuilt it with better fan. The old fans weren't brushless and neither is the new one.

The old fans literally started to crumble from all the thinner fumes that passed through them over the years, yet no explosions.

hardest part is getting the thinning ratio and PSI right so it comes out smooth but with lacquers this is pretty easy, roughly 50% thinner and 15-25 PSI all work

it is a baker's airbrush. usually used by confectionaries' to paint cake and other food stuff. baker's and patisseries use this instead of lugging around a huge ass compressor and the hose might tug the cake and shit.

a good baker's airbrush is around 50~60 USD. way better to start using this first and get acclimated with airbrushing instead of wasting hundreds of dollars that can easily break because you are not autistic enough to clean the airbrush thoroughly and miss a step.

although you can get a chink portable airbrush for even cheaper, like for only 20 USD

some ver Ka MGs are just re-using other MGs for MS that he designed (ie Gundam Crossbone X1/X2/X3 are all Katoki designed MS that reuses MG F91 v1.0 frame, the Gundam ver Ka reuses 1.5 legs, GM type C arms and knees)

some ver Ka MGs are straight up upgrade from old MGs (Hi-Nu, Wing Zero custom, ZZ Gundam)

some are because Bandai is scared that no one might buy it, so they slapped Katoki's name on it (Ball, Zaku and Gundam FA Thunderbolt)

But there is one thing for sure, every ver Ka MG has has a distinct style of decals

he's using a 0.18mm needle/nozzle. i thin my mr color 1:3 when i use my 0.15mm, 1:2 just isn't thin enough for a nozzle that small. 1:1.5-1:2 is about right for 0.4/0.3

Ordered some enamel and acrylic thinner and tested them out - you're right that acrylic paint can eat away lacquer paint, but i found that enamel thinner will absolutely erase lacquer paint, even if it's been gloss-coated

so now I'm having trouble figuring out how I'm going to use (gold) paint to panel line over white lacquer paint now, may just go with acrylic since the thinner doesn't seem to hurt the lacquer too much

I have a (stupid) question about one sided nippers like the God Hand one. I watched the video explanation showing that the lower part of the nipper doesn't sit flush with the blade in closed position. It seems to work well with nubs that are close to an edge but what about nubs that are right in the middle of a part? Should I keep using a hobby knife for these?

I'm wanting to get the MG Master Gundam and the HG Master Gundam/Funsakki, and BigBadToyStore says they are up for "preorder"/restocks either in march (which is over) or in "early 2023",

You need to have something metallic and grounded around so you can touch it with your bare skin from time to time. Anti-static bracelet connected to a metal desk frame works too.

Hey guys. I've been wanting to get into Gunpla for a while but local supplies have been low and delivery costs aren't helping.
A place near me has finally gotten the MG Double-X in stock after it being sold out for years but they still don't have some other smaller, cheaper, models I've been wanting in stock (namely The Origin Char Zaku).

What are the chances of it still being around by the time they get other things? Do i tank the delivery cost and get it now or do I gamble and wait?

MG DX is one of those kits that goes in and out of production every couple years. If you want it and don't grab it now you might be waiting a couple of years before seeing it again. And there's no garuntee those hg kits you want will be getting reprints anytime soon either. Bandai reprints a lot of there stuff but it could be 5+ years depending on how well it usually sells.

early reviews are in, Zeta ver Ka is mid.... get it only if you like the Waverider mode.

it has one of the best transformation gimmick seen in any of Zeta Gundam toys/model kits, but as a result, it made the MS mode kind of floppy.

they kind of made the torso more secure because the crotch needs to latch on to the lower abdomen,but the upper body is still floppy. In the end, the Zeta plus still has the best Zeta torso because it has a peg that connects to the grove of the lower abdomen

Haven't painted much in a while, loving the Aerial Rebuild and giving it a paintjob. Used Vallejo Mecha Color Dark Blue since it's a 99% color match out of the bottle and I don't feel like mixing. Feels a lot thinner than they used to be but maybe it's just been a while since I painted, I feel like I used a third to half the bottle here which seems like just way too much to me. I know the line of paints is supposed to be airbrush ready but I still thinned it some, but it didn't take much thinner to make it way too thin.

Any that use a 3mm connection should be fine for a 30MS. I quite like Good Smile's THE SIMPLE stands at the moment, but the smaller action bases, or a Tamashii ACT stand, will work fine too.
Everything paint and panel line-wise is pretty much the same as your regular gunpla too.

gloss wouldn't hurt, but you can also spot paint gloss under decals. I'd personally darken those five vents at the front of the gun first however. the black decals for this kit are fine to apply immediately after gloss as the black streaking will be hard to descern if it is above or below them, but you might want to touch up the red decals with more weathering to blend them better.

I didn't know off the top of my head so I just checked, it's been spraying at 35psi, looking at vallejo's website they recommend 15-20 psi, which sounds more right. I can't believe I didn't event think about my psi when I was getting everything set back up

It can create sharp fragments that fly in your face at high speed though.
But I'm not really scraping, just trying to remove pieces of supports in the crevices where sanding sticks have a hard time reaching. Wet sanding is still 90% of the prep.

Yeah I was thinning the Mecha Color but not a whole lot. Their label recommends 1-2 drops of thinner to 10 drops of paint which was working out, but kind of clogging the airbrush frequently, some colors worse than others. I did some looking into it and I saw someone recommended using their flow improver in place of their thinner, so I may give that a shot.

never had problems getting gunked up like that.
i thought glass files were a meme when i first heard about people using it but after trying it myself, i actually find it better than using regular sandpaper.
i still use sandpaper if i want to get a super high finish but i usually only do that for kits i know im probably not going to paint any time soon.
glass files smooth it out good enough if im going to paint it.

Reviews I saw were mostly praising the zaku warrior. The arms feel like the very first revision of Lego Star Wars Droids. They can only really bend up and down, while the chest allows the arm to every so slightly come out like the right arm.
So it makes it difficult for the left arm to reach the handle. And Upon closer look at the pose in the manual, they have the left arm as a support for the wizard by supporting it by the exhaust vents rather than using the handle.

Why is painting (specifically airbrushing) so hard to get into? Not only you have to spend a fortune to buy an airbrush and all the things to make it work, you also have to heavily invest in building an adequate working area that can accomodate things like a spray booth and an exhaust pipe. If you don't live in Asia or the US, getting painting supplies is almost impossible. Stuff like brand specific lacquer thinners and top coats cannot be shipped internationally. If you live in a humid country, you're also out of luck when it comes to painting. Don't get me started on how hazardous this hobby can be if you work with lacquers.

Why don't they make this hobby more accessible to everyone?

I got one some months ago, wasn't that hard to find it.
Works pretty well, only downside is it can only be hooked on to their own cans and I'm out of the one it came with after one job.
Gotta find an adapter somewhere.

There's also Xacto for blades but they are american. You could also get generic brandless design knives, they are cheaper but they wear out faster so you have to swap in a fresh blade more often. The cost kinda balances out.

Get a good HG that isnt expensive like the Origin RX-78-2 or Origin Zaku II. They look pretty nice just built and are only a couple dollars more than an entry grade. I think the entry grade is too simple of a build even for a first time

Sounds like you want an EG.
I would recommend the RX-78-2 (Full Weapon Set).
If you do feel like going into the hobby afterwards, then pick up a 30MM Alto/Portanova or a HG. The regular Zowort is a bit of a step up from an EG, but not too complex/old.

I myself started with things like Keroro, but my first proper 1/144 gundam was the Age-1 Titus because I wanted to meme Madoka.
Lost interest for a while until the Pokemon plamo got me back. The recent releases are pretty fun and easy to build with using minimum stickers nowadays. Cheap, too.
That got me back to Gundam and other kits.

Do you have any tips for working with putty? Tried it out for the first time the other day and it was hard to work with it seemed to dry extremely fast and was hard to apply where I wanted it using a toothpick

No, that one was all dried up. I think that kit actually was made in 1982.

The only putty I ever use is Tamiya Light Curing putty and it stays liquid until you hit it with UV.
