Here's a question.

We often look at the newer Transformers figures with an air of "they're not as good as they used to be", like we've got thinner plastic full of gaps, lack of joints like wrist swivels and often times lacking paint.

Were the older figures legitimately better engineered though?

Like the new Bumblebee just looks straight up terrible compared to the old one, that's an obvious case, but compare a Legacy figure to something like, say, 2010's Generations Drift. Drift FEELS sturdier, his transformation feels a bit more intricate, but his articulation is definitely inferior. Sure looks better though.

Where's the line of comparison meant to be drawn?

You know, at this point we've gotten every G1 Autobot leader as a modern toy (even Metalhawk who was only leader for like the first half of Masterforce). I think only the ones we don't have are the old Euro G1 leaders (Thunderclash and Pyro).

Depends on the figure, I think. Really it depends on a lot of things. Overall design philosophy has shifted as well; accuracy was less important than it is now, and I think that's led to modern figures compromising certain aspects of transformation and alt mode in order to achieve a certain look for the bot mode.

It's kind of like the Sunbow Syndrome that the MP line was afflicted with, only at a much lower price point.

I don't buy Masterpiece so I don't know what you're referring to, unless you're talking about the hyper-toon accurate thing the recent ones have done that lead to breakage-prone and overly-complicated transformations.

The old one looks closer to the correct shape, imo. The torso on the new one is especially bad, it's basically a beer belly rather than straight down, with no obviously waist. It also has less accurate legs, even the forearms appear to be less accurate.

Yes, that's what I'm talking about.

It'd be stupid of me to claim that engineering hasn't gotten noticeably better over the past 20 years, but the application of the engineering itself has become questionable. I feel like a good older toy always made way better use of what it had to work with. Modern toys feel like you're just crossing your fingers and hoping you don't get monkey paw'd on some aspect.

If you only knew how many trips I took to look for that frigging toy, my God. But yeah, it's been out for months. Lucky you found red alert, it seems like it was just scattered about, I saw a Christmas display full of them at one store but none else where. Minerva was worth the hassle imo but I like my fembots, her color scheme and fave are nice. The shoulders aren't cool but it's fair.

Well, the TLDR was back in the day, people kept asking "why TFs have genders" since they don't sexually reproduce. Furman's run was basically trying to answer that question and we ended up with Arcee being female because "mad scientist experiments". Later in the canon, fembots were introduced as a lost colony but the writers decided not to touch on the subject of gender because they figured it's one of those mysteries that shouldn't be tacl;ed too seriously, like Prime's disappearing trailer.

They decided to introduce Acree into the comic but Furman couldn't compute just having a female transformer for some reason so he came up with this convoluted explanation that Jhiaxis experimented on a regular Transformer to force gender into Cybertronians or some shit. It even made everyone else automatically refer to her as "her" for some reason.

Then much later. IDW decided to introduce female transformers into the comic and sidestepped all of this anyway, simply saying they were always around and doing all kinds of recons to Arcee to avoid offending women and trannies and everyone else.

Basically Simon Furman cannot comprehend why alien robots have genders like humans so he "explained" it by having Arcee be a male that Jhiaxus experimented on to introduce gender to their species. years later they said she was actually trans or something so everything's good. Also she was originally Galvatron's twin brother. IDW got fucking bizarre towards the end

Me, personally, I always hated the experiment Arcee idea, but IDW has always been a mixed bag. Things I like, thing I dislike.
It's my assumption that male and female were just how the factories produced them. In canons where the Quintessons made them, it was basically a marketing gimmick of "female drones for female work, male drones for male work!" before the Cybertronians revolted and grow sapience. Then, after that, the bodies and programming simply informed their development as a species.

Transformer Generations Thrilling 30s Skids

Something of a big splash at the time, but everyone seems to have forgotten it now.

First thing notice about this car is how nice of a blue it is. Followed by that red stripe on the side.
For a deluxe car post-2012 Skids has quite a bit of paint going on. You can see the whole front end done, grill and lights, and even the painted tail lights are visible peeking from around back.

The red rims work better here than Legacy Crosscut's entirely red wheels. These tire have the same thing going on as Windcharger from the other day. With the front two pinned and the back two clipped on.

Something you can't really see in the picture put is pretty obvious in hand is the paint matching on the clear plastic.
The bit around the windows and the wiper section are noticeably different shades of blue.

Transformation pulls a couple non-standard moves get end up with a fairly standard robot.

There's something about all the its of red against the blue that I really like.
The design elements of the robot mode, especially the head and big doofy feet are very IDW. As was the style at the time. That doesn't get my goat like it does some people.

What does get my goat is how Skids can barely stand do to his very tiny heels.
There just isn't enough material there to work against his backpack.

The big gun also splits into two smaller guns, like T30 Rattrap's does.

Skids' posability could use some work.
Ball jointed neck, hips and elbows are good enough. Though on this toy I think I would have preferred the hinge+ bicep swivel for the elbow.
Ankles are ball jointed but are cute so they only tilt outwards. Toes can move some too.
Swivels at the thighs and waist. and very stiff soft ratchets at the knees, the kind that feel like they might be tearing themselves apart.

The big thing that kills the articulation on this toy are the shoulders. They're ball jointed but aren't cut for any outward movement. So you get about 15 degrees to work with.

I will say that when you have all his weapons on enough weight seems to be shifted forward that he can stand easier

I love how Japan tries to slam everything into the same continuity. Car Robots happens in the G1 timeline and the G1 crew on Earth somehow don't cross paths with them or their underground transport network. Anything to make the universe more preposterous is good in my book.

Car Robots has Predacons from the future traveling to the 2000s, with the Autobots being a team that also protects time somehow. It's unimportant to the show and is glossed over, which's why the dub recontextualized it as a full reboot with reused names (despite the plot details being the same, arguably making the US version significantly MORE confusing).
Then stuff like Kiss Players and the Legends manga build on different parts of the lore to smooth over plotholes, often having their main stories be time- or even dimension-traveling as well.

Unicron Trilogy was the first proper, full reboot in both markets.

I had that full set including both perfect effect kids, pc-15 and 16. It sucked ass. The Optimus was mediocre and God Bomber was trash. Combined it was floppy, crumbly trash that couldn't be posed. And the Autobots already had their own underground tunnel system, according to some other obscure manga. The Car Robots team presumably just modified it or built over it.

What the hell even IS this Orion based off of? It's IDW Cybertron Optimus, but, not. Is this based off some single-page drawing from before he became a cop and upgraded? I havent read many of the earlier comics so I've no clue. But yeah, what >>10423389 said; the stream guy basically said "we know you guys want a specific Optimus, so keep your ears open for news in the future" as well as just more comic figures in general.
Also, this Shockwave sucks, sorry. It just doesn't fit the Siege Seeker mold, so many details are wrong.

Considering the kind of retooling done to get Senator Shockwave out of the Siege Seeker mold I think it's possible to have VTOL wings. Though my gut tells me its a straight redeco, again like his IDW2 appearance.

Both that, and the very-bulbous hinges on the sides of the cab.

It's certainly not a deal-breaker for me, but it's very curious that they still ended up making something worse, and then also added a new detracting feature. Not that most people will be keeping this guy in truck mode.

I got the original Siege Megatron. I wanted to get the Earthrise one to try and frankenstein them together into one ideal figure, but I literally never saw it in stores and it was selling online for more than I was willing to pay for it. I didn't bother with any of the other releases.

Very hyped for this because Chaos Theory, Megatron Origin and the flashbacks were legit the best part of IDW1 for me and I would have never expected to see Senator Shockwave ever getting a toy. His alt-mode is lame but I didn't believe we would get him in the first place so I can easily accept this.
Honestly my only gripe is that they felt the need to turn Orion into a "cata clerk" when the story this is based on had the coolest version of Orion so far and personally I wish he was always a cop instead of having these low tier no-name jobs.

He was already a cop there, that's Coptimus. I wasn't just in one panel he appeared for a bunch of times. Conspirators of the state killed his two underlings and he went nuclear over this, stormed the senate and was only barely spared from jail or execution because Shockwave risked his ass to save him. They became comrades after that to oppose Sentinel and his evil twink. The toy is a mix of different types though, only the upper part (minus head) is the same.

Combiners were always a result of experimentation. That goes back to both the comics/cartoons. Megatron creating Devatstator from the brainwashed Constructicons. Or Shockwave creating them from the Creation Matrix in the comics. Likewise for Pretenders in the comics. Furman instead had it as a long running plot thread in the IDW Comics.

Don't worry about that. Even the design changes between appearances since sometimes it is a biped and other times a quadruped.
Plus since the design is based on Prime-related media, would get hit with a stick to be more boxy. Hopefully not so lazy as just Grimlock with wings and a new head though.

I forgot about that detail. His bio doesn't paint him as one though, it paints him more as a legendary warrior. So he's highly inspirational. There's a story in turning him into a leader, don't get me wrong. I bet he was planned as the late Europe G1 leader until Thunderclash was brought in.

I wonder why Nova though and not Sentinel considering how comic accurate the rest is (save for Orion's job). And Sentinel is easy to do since it's just a recoloring of Astrotrain with new head. I wish they had shown the backside and sides of the boxes.

It was probably intended for release stateside. The instructions showed the Ratbat head. It was probably scrapped for the FOC line and shared the fate of the Hardhead that was a headswap of the Warpath that was also part of the same Generatons line, but never released. There was also a Swerve using the Kup figure that got released as an exclusive.

Depends. The first comic Sentinel was actually from Milne's time working for Dreamwave and the comics have later adapted more to his toy form. IDW1 had Sentinel reapper way later and have him look similar to the toy but more yellow and without the wings. Then IDW2 came and fully adapted the toy version.
It's technically not accurate to make the winged Sentinel the enemy of miner Megatron and Orion, but liberties. Also, easier to pull off. I would pay a load of money to actually get a toy of his original form >>10423994 though. He looked yet a bit different again in Chaos Theory. Similar to the Origin version but different shoulder parts mainly.

It is a store that deals with surplus. I was really happen when I bought Waspinator and Windblade from one for $7.50, but the second time I went to it a few years later there were no Transformers. Lots of Fortnite stuff if I remember correctly.
