Popped this guy open last night
First time messing with this mold, it isn't terrible but all the problems I thought I'd have with it didn't change when I got it in hand

Chief problem with the look of this mold is that the shoulders are too squished into the body, maybe too small too.

This is why I think an Armored Ultra Magnus should be done the way Star Saber works, or like the PE Core cab for CW Magnus; the cab should just plug into the armor instead of the core bot actually wearing it. I know it kind of loses the concept of the original toy by doing it that way, but it just solves so many issues, especially at a retail budget.

I'd be curious to see how well they could do an armored Magnus at the Commander price point they're charging for SS Magnus, but seeing as how they essentially invented problems to give that toy which had already been solved by the MP and even CW molds, I'm not holding my breath, lol.

What's 'reasonably priced' to you? I think there is a 3P company probably making him in the next year and a half if teased CAD models are to be trusted. As far as official? I don't know. I feel like someone asked them about Transmetals in an interview and they said they'd like to do some for Legacy, but it won't be vacuum metal finish and rather metallic paint because of the conditions it creates in the factory. That's just speaking from memory though.

if you can find them for less than $75 each you really need to experience og depth charge and rampage at least once. transmetals, gimmicks and big toys aren't usually my thing but these 3 are legitimately in a league of their own. their biggest downfall is the back kibble on both of them but it's adjustable enough to work. very few toys actually look good "just standing there" but depth charge (and rampage) just dominate whatever shelf they're on

for real, though, when I first got into Transformers like 15 years ago and began interacting with the communities, it was so weird to me when, every time there was a new mold, they'd be like "Oh, (toy X) could totally be repainted into (character Y), I'd buy it!" The concept of "good enough" repaints was so alien to me, but I wasn't really thinking about how much work goes into a Transformer as opposed to a basic action figure.

I still haven't gotten that mold, and personally I prefer the look of the Miner Megs version, but if I were deadset on going G1, that's definitely the best deco. I'm really not a fan of most of the gray plastic Hasbro uses, so I always prefer Megatron when he's silver.

The BW Neo toyline got a ton of grief back in the day for shellforming, but in hindsight it's such a unique time for the franchise that we'll never see again. It's so circumstantial- it exists entirely because Takara had a freespace, and no input from Hasbro, and no expectations as to what TF had to be besides running with the beast theme.

I genuinely don't see a new Depth Charge ever besting the original, im hesitantly optimistic for TransArts version, but a new hastak has no shot. The original toy is an absolute legend, beautiful colours, chrome and molding. The manta mode is a massive joy to behold and his limbs are pretty poseable, the tail will easily support him in any pose and even just standing there he looks glorious. I wish i still had mine from childhood but i can easily recall exactly how he feels in hand, the tactile click of his wings and the weight and smooth curves, top tier toy

Yeah, lately I've been realizing that a lot of toys from the late 90s/early 00s have zero chance of being topped anymore. There was just so much going on back then in terms of quality of materials, level of detail, and absurdly fun gimmicks and modes that defined so many bots as wonderfully timeless toys in their own right, regardless of their accuracy or articulation. Hasbro's modern agenda and penny-pinching has no chance of allowing them to even approach such greatness.

We should start an official list of bots we know Hasbro will only ruin if they attempt them again. Depthcharge for sure, and some anon said Big Convoy in the last thread, I definitely agree with that. I think there's a good case to be made for Scourge/Laser Optimus, since the Legacy version is a pretty big dud. Who else?

I think its mostly resigned for older big figures. Little guys are usually pretty easy to improve with a simple transformation update and the modern posing joints, but the bigger ultra class style toys can't be beat. There's something about the bulk and heft of them that can't be outdone these days, youll get better poseability sure, but the feeling isnt there, the density, the gimmicks.

Really hope they stay true to their tease of potentially doing a Cybertronian supercoptimus, but I also really liked Prowl's armored car with kitted-out fuckin' artillery cannons that he had post-Dark Cybertron. Ehh, way too many soft plastic/rubber parts on a lot of prime figures (mostly for safety reasons, they were pretty spiky sometimes) and a lot of the hasbro weapons were pretty shit (arms microns are nice, though). Soundwave has way too much rubber for what would otherwise be an almost perfect representation of the character. Predaking’s head was also unpainted, I remember. Otherwise yeah the designs can’t really be topped.

Proportionally this guy kinda sucks admittedly, especially for a G1/86 Magnus, but, iunno hear me out; is it just me or would this work really well for a retool into an IDW Magnus?
Bc his design is already very chunky, it could use the wideness to better effect maybe. Not to mention the spring-loaded Matrix chamber could be removed and replaced with a cockpit for Minimus Ambus, perfect.

This, honestly. I'm a pretty big IDW fag and I loved this version of Ultra Magnus. I nabbed the LG for 43 bucks, and the better plastic and paint apps pretty much solve 90% of the problems I had with the Hasbro version. It's not perfect, but it's super fun and nails the style.

Part of the reason this toy works so well is because it's simple. The SS version added the whole spring-door chest gimmick which necessitates turning the cab into a mess of panels and making the chest super bulky. Some of the biggest strengths of the CW mold are because it doesn't do that; the mass of his chest is literally just the solid truck cab and the armor plate, so it makes his whole torso feel more well integrated.

Doesn't exist, the only official megtron that turns into a generic walther p is this 2010 legends that doesn't include the extra bits, not even 3p has done a classics- generations version walther Megs with all his bits, only MPesque figures include them.

...well, being fair lit nobody cares about any of those designs that aren't from MTMTE/LL, so eh. Also iirc his latter-half MTMTE/LL look was sorta a one-time thing I think? A giant, bigger power armor for a notable fight, but he still had his regular design underneath. Then again it's been a year since i first binged it, might be forgetting details.

And I dunno. Sure, some of the retools haven't been great (Orion Pax/Shockwave pack, Nova Prime...), but everyone else has been pretty spot-on I'd say. Yeah they've been mostly retools (sans Tarn and Battlemaster Rung of course), but that's all most IDW designs really demand, honestly.
Also looking at the ones that released recently, none of them have been solely headswaps since a weird exclusive Siege Impactor. Blurr, Miner Megs, and Ratbat have been pretty extensive retools. Hell, the only things wrong with the bad retools I listed was simply that the base molds were already bad or ill-fitting for the characters in the first place, not because the retooling wasn't good enough, or something.
If anything, the IDW releases during Prime Wars were much less accurate, because they were brand new molds yet attempted to be some bizarre amalgamations of the IDW designs and Earthish Generations-styling. CW Magnus was honestly one of the few outliers, back then.

This literally never happens. Everything just gets randomly more expensive because sellers will use the highest a figure has ever sold for as an excuse to make their's 5 bucks more expensive, and then some idiot with more money than sense will come along and pay that price, which justifies the next seller to repeat the process, and prices just ratchet higher and higher.

I love SS102, but does anyone have the slightest clue as to why the back piece in robot mode is injection molded in blue but then painted red? Usually I can find the reason, but I seriously have no clue why they would do this for this specific figure. No blue from the plastic is actually intended to show anywhere on the robot or vehicle.

It doesn't take anything from the figure, but it's just strange to me.

They mentioned that he only uses four mold sprues instead of the usual seven for a voyager, likely relating to him being an exclusive and budget issues with that. So it's cheaper to just paint it red rather than use additional sprues I guess.

Same reason Cosmos and Override received brand new molds last year instead of being simple retools like they were planned, just Takara wizardry at work.

You honestly think a company that's been doing this for almost half a century is "stupid"? They've spent decades learning how to min-max every step of the toy production process so they can turn in the best profits for the sake of their shareholders. Every manufacturing decision they make has probably been calculated and-recalculated at least a dozen times; if something is even just a single penny more expensive to produce on a single figure, that amounts to hundreds of thousands of dollars lost.

Everytime you notice a "stupid" decision as a consumer, you have to realize it was actually just a "profitable" decision, and that Hasbro didn't care whether or not you noticed.

Plastic makes up 99% of the volume of the toy and is infinitely more expensive than any of the other materials used, including paint. If they can save even a fraction of a penny by putting something on a different sprue, or molding it out of a cheaper mix of plastic and just painting it, they will.

Yeah I think you're pretty screwed with bayverse figs, unfortunately. There was a lot of shit flung around about the movie lines in the past (especially ROTF and DOTM) and that probably made Hasbro more cautious in taking risks with "non-canon" movie designs. Studio Series feels like the ultimate safe bet from their side, just throwing up their hands and going "Hey here are the guys you saw in the movie"

It didn't even exist by the time DOTM released. The DOTM line shelfwarmed super hard and had trouble moving at all. Which wasn't purely because of movie fatigue, the cost-cutting on the toys was particularly bad around that period (also evident in the Fall of Cybertron toys). So you got all these thin, dinky, simplistic DOTM toys which didn't appeal to anyone either kid or collector. Predictable how that ended.

TF is co-owned by Hasbro and Takara. Generally their quality is equal nowadays, but that's only because Hasbro forced Takara to be as cheap as them lol; used to be Takara versions would have more premium paint n stuff. Today the figures are about equal, but Takara's getting back into doing the occasional premium release, on rare occasions.

I'm a burger so I can't give you region-specific retailer advice, sorry. But if you want an Optimus that's just like a normal one, then next year's the franchise 40th anniversary, and because of leaked listings we're all expecting a new cartoon-accurate G1 Optimus in the SS86 line (also Megatron), so wait for that potentially. Transformers Legacy also just put out an Optimus based on his Armada/Micron Legend design, which is a really good toy (and from a really good anime), but specifically designed to be a departure from the traditional look. Supposedly we're getting an Optimus in Legacy based on TF Animated (the 2007 show everybody loves, go watch it), but Legacy's been altering the designs of any character that came from a show with a unique artstyle, so the Animated and TF Prime figures in Legacy have been controversial. Maybe it'll be good, who knows.
I don't follow the movie lines nowadays because my favorite designs are still from the first two movies only, but do actually watch Bumblebee someday, it's actually good and... well just watchable, unlike movies 3-5 lol.

Yeah because ever since the Bayformers the robot designs are done first before the toy. Which results in great looking robot modes and vehicle modes on the TV but sub-par looking toys trying their best to match the animation model that most of the time cheats its transformation and kibble placement.

Netflix, Earthrise and the Spoiler pack all suffer from yellowing even straight out of mint in the box. I would recommend the 35th Anniversary version myself. Great cartoon deco and does not suffer from yellowing as the figure came out before the pandemic which is when the yellowing started to happen on figures.

So I decided to pick up the RotB Autobots after finally watching the movie on Paramount+. Was lucky enough to get a RotB Prime when Pulse restocked him a few weeks ago and Arcee was easy enough to get but I was struggling to find this guy. I had a pre order on BBTS that would get filled eventually but I was impatient. Luckily while at a random Walmart I never go to I found him. Pretty cool. They also had Airrazor but I passed on her. I think I'm only gonna get Primal, I was never huge into BW and the rest of the Maximals didn't really do anything in the movie. Can't wait for Mirage and eventually Wheeljack. I even lucked out and got the redeco that has the better fact paint.

Super pleased to find a Grimlock
The chrome boy Optimus and Henkei Bee were random finds at the comic store
And Towline is Towline

After messing with them a bit I find the Bee's ball joint for his head is uber cracked, so I either have to live with him looking slightly to the right forever or risk destrying the joint completely

Not sure how well you can make it out but the crack runs from the base all the way to the top of the ball
Not super comfortable trying to separate the two without it disintegrating

Also strange to me athe the stalk of the ball was screwed on to it's plate instead of it all being one piece. HasTak just cared way less about avoiding screw use in 2006

I got Blitzwing and tiny Ironhide today. I feel gypped that Blitzwing is the size of a voyager, it's stark next to grimlock. I like him though, and needed to usurp the T30 one since I never got the TR one

No, but I am saying it would be better to not waste a commander slot on a figure that nobody would really want to buy considering there's a cheaper, serviceable option with CW Magnus.
We only get 1 Commander per line and I would rather they not put in the lowest amount of effort possible for a version of a figure that only one person will buy.

Not as much as they are about IDW magnus who not only doesn't really have a consistent design, but also doesn't have even close to as much of an impact as G1, Animated or even Car Robots Magnus all of which are completely different from each other so at least Animated would at least be somewhat warranted. Just admit that your idea for an IDW Ultra Magnus was shit and would never happen.
