The only way to get good is practice. The best photographers in the world have also said this. Take lots of pics. LOTS of them. You won't nail it in one shot, even the best take multiple pics and chose the best one. Good photo gear is nice, but skill beats gear.
Have fun doing it, too! If a hobby isn't fun, then find a new hobby. I sometimes forget how fun it can be to take a bunch of silly pics. Had an absolute blast building and taking these pics, even if they are weird and crappy. Weird crappy block toy pics are why I keep these pics in containment threads like /pbbg/ & /mcx/ and don't post here. (FYI, I have posted other pics to this thread, just not any like this).
Also, take pics for YOU and not for the >(You)'s
