Recently got the Mechatro WeGo 1:20 (the Asuka version) and started building it. Gotta say it's a joy so far, the part seams all line up nicely with panel lines or natural joins of the design itself so shouldn't need any seamwelding I hope. Also the resin Asuka gremlin figure is extremely well cast, one of the nicest resin kits I've ever handled.
I'm torn on how to paint the kit though, on the one hand I could go for a more realistic finish, with a glossy automotive red and doing the power-arms in a more industrial/military finish, but I had a crazy idea for painting it like a 3D watercolour illustration. A bit like those cel-shaded paintjobs you see sometimes, but styled after watercolour instead of anime cels. I'm imagining it'd be extremely tricky to do that mind you.

The mixing ratios won't get you the plastic color either even if you follow them. you need to melt down spare runners and recast the parts in-color.

Name means nothing. I use "Jaffe-Bechert lens nucleus rotator" (an eye surgery tool) to precisely apply tiny amounts of CA glue, other people use toothpicks, needles and other random shit to do the same.

Once you know what you need to do, you should have a pretty good picture in your mind of the tool you need to do it, just go browse hobby tools online and find the thing that looks about right.

But generally "snap" in "snapfit" and brittle materials like UV resin don't mix, FDM printing is more suited for that.

I have this stupid bitch idea of getting two HG Sinanjus and one narrative version and then mixing their bits together to make some custom shit. Purely because I noticed you could slip the leg thrusters onto both sides.
Sand out the bits that imply zeon heraldry as well, have Lupus Rex arms but I'd want rounded shoulders which I don't think I could really make work.
I'm a baby when it comes to gunpla customs.

I keep pieces of random plastic packaging and cut narrow strips that I use to apply glue. It takes a bit of practice but you can have a flat end unlike a toothpick or needle, and depending on the thickness of the plastic you can get it into really narrow places.

So I looked at the goods.

The PSKX format is kinda queer, I had to use 3rd party script to bring it into 3DSMAX, but from then it was pretty easy: save as OBJ, open in Meshmixer, separate.
The RX78 model I chose to open readily separated into 153 parts which upon cursory examination appear to be the actual plamo kit parts (minus the sprues), so you could export them individually and print at your leisure (I guess if you tend to lose parts and happen to have a 3D printer you're safe now). The poly count is kinda low, so scaling it to really large size without additional work is probably not very feasible (I imagine a couple of iterations of Turbosmooth would help). So yeah, there's your downloadable gundams.

I'm sure you can do everything in 3DSMAX, I'm just used to Meshmixer and dislike blender.

To be perfectly honest I don't see the point of printing these: kit plastic is WAY easier to deal with, the kits are not out of print, so unless you mod/rescale/etc the parts in 3D software first, I don't see why anyone would want to go through the trouble.

On a single lost part? Perhaps.

On the whole kit? Not likely. Resin is not free, after you add all the supports you will use up quite a bit of it and cleaning 3D prints is a lot more work than cleaning plastic parts on runners (although that depends in your standards I guess).

Can't speak for FDM, but I don't think modern FDM printers can print good looking 1/144 gundams yet.

By the time you're done cleaning/surfacing/painting 153 parts, I think you'll be more than happy to have paid $30-$50 for an easy snapfit plastic kit instead.

If you were doing it yourself and your own printer, probably round $10 of resin, but then your're also looking a 100+ hours of prep work and cleaning. If you get someone else to do it, probably $200 or more, depending on the person.

It's a different thing entirely. Sol R is water soluble, so you can use normal brushes to brush it on and then you can wash the brushes and they are back to normal. If you dip a brush in a latex liquid like >>10690273 or Sol Neo that's the end of your brush.

On the other hand Sol R grips to the surface quite a bit tighter than latex, so it can occasionally lift paint, which is why I only use Sol R to mask bare plastic (like clear canopies).

Naturally. A 6 foot gundam can be made of hollow parts with walls 2mm thick and that would still need around 10 liters of resin. Of course the statue will be brittle beyond belief.

A solid 6 foot gundam will need 40+ liters of resin and a bunch of steel rods inside to prevent it from collapsing. Not to mention all the difficulties printing solid parts of that size.

In fact, using a resin printer to print a 6' gundam is a bad idea to begin with. FDM is where it's at.

As another anon pointed out, these resin estimates are way too low. It will be at least $200 of resin. Also, how much is your time worth? I doubt you could find someone to do 1 hours of labor for $2/hour unless you live in the third world (and how skilled would that labor be?) So the point is, this is probably like a $1000 project unless you've got a dozens of hours of spare time and are quite skilled at assembly/painting.

I haven't had good restful sleep since April or so. I am also chain smoking and chugging coffee and overall dropped any concern for my health. When you're not a kid anymore and you treat yourself like shit it annihilates you. I'm so fucked I don't even have the mental or physical resources to build a model kit. That's depressing. I'm sorta worried I might have some neurodegenerative onset or weird cancer 'cause I got a weird persistent feeling that something's bad with me. I'm having thoughts about the stuff I'm collecting with an implicit prospect that I'll die in a couple years tops which is unnerving. This year's been a really wild ride.

I have decided to stop using sandpaper and work only with the xacto to clear nubs and it's given me better results. I build straight-up with no painting and I have no idea how to remove the scuffs from sandpaper.
However I hate the white stress marks that you inevitably get when you snip the pieces off the runners. I have no idea if it's possible to undo those without painting. Still better than getting scuffs from sanding. Even with 2000 grit it doesn't seem to look the same and I often found I oversanded a bit. I manage to make a more precise job with a scalpel.

Yeah, it's called 3rd party sellers. Reading is still required, it literally says how much it will cost to ship on the product page. If you ship everything from the "Amazon.co.jp" seller, it's as cheap or cheaper than HLJ.

I built my first model in about 6 or 7 years today. I was at the store and they had this model kit very cheap, so I went for it. Thankfully I still had some of my supplies, but my snippers felt a bit dull.

It came with stickers AND waterslide decals. I've never done waterslide decals before, but I bought a bottle of Markfit Strong based on what I remembered about wanting something to help place the decals. Anything I should keep in mind?

Bandai decals take a while to soak up enough water to activate. I like to cut one out. Dip it and set it aside. Then cut another and dip it, go back to the first one and it should be ready to slide off and pliable enough to bend. Warm water helps too. I throw the setter down for it to land on and push the decal around on and also to set the decal underneat.

if you want to avoid nub marks like these you need to start sanding nubs, or better yet filing with a glass file, instead of just snip-and-go

snip it a little bit further away from the part so there is still nub left and then sand the rest away. some of these can still be removed by sanding (or trimming with an xacto knife), but some of the white marks are stress marks caused by snipping too close to the plastic and won't go away even from that. you can however reduce the size of stress marks by applying a bit of pressure with the back of your thumbnail to the area
of course you would need to take apart the model again to get at the parts to do that so it depends on how much effort you wanna put in.

You shouldn't need decal adhesive (always good to have a bottle just in case though) and should be able to apply the decal from the paper then use mark fit strong to shape it to the surface

The base (satin red) would be durable as anything, but the black is really delicate I doubt I can lay masking tape over it...

I can try cutting squares to mask the red areas, but I feel lining up the corners would be extremely difficult.

I heard in another thread something about 3rd party polycap alternatives. Where can I find them? I want to make an MG Astray Copper Frame, but the polycaps would mess with the color scheme, and it's not like I can just paint them because it doesn't really bond to polycaps. What do you mean panel lines? The area between pieces when you snap them together? I don't know what you mean by trimming flash. I'm not hip to all the lingo. All I know is the gate is what they come molded in and you call the leftover you cut off nubs. I was never heavy into the hobby, only originally getting into it so I knew how to build a super minipla Megazord because I was a big Power Rangers fan. Then I kept buying super cheap kits online because building helped keep me distracted when I was getting sober. Then I just stopped because I was buying kits to build and just throwing them away, not having a place for them or caring about the property they were from.

Very sure it's not a knockoff, it was sold in a store, had Bandai all over the box and bluefin. It was just at a steep discount and a character I liked, so I took the dive to get back into it. I have a house now instead of renting a room, so I actually have a place for my models now too.

What I meant by finicky joints was like when I pull out his hands to swap them, the ball socket in wrist the hands plug into pop out with the hand, so I have to pop those back in (why the line on wrist might look more pronounced, I just resplit it to try and secure the plug better).

Also finicky that his shoulder pads pop off when I raise the arm high. And when I try to move his arm out, the inner part pops out visible and looks awful. It popped out completely once, but I reopened the chest and fiddled with it and it's been more secure since. It still comes out his body when I use full range of motion, but still stays attached.

Okay yeah this is my problem. I snip the pieces off of the gate leaving chuncks still attached, after that able to get at the piece better, I use my snippers to trim it as close as possible. And it leaves those white marks.

I read years ago you want to cut it from the gate leaving nubs which it what I do. But I then snip as close as possible, and try to almost shave anything left over using one side of my snipper. Never read to leave the nubs to sand, nor have I heard of a glass file. I have an xacto knife, but I've never used it for model kits. I guess it would be better for trying to trim leftovers instead of scrapping with my snippers. I just ordered another kit because this was so fun, so I'll try using an xacto knife to shave/trim that instead of one side of my snipper and I bet that will make a load of difference. Thanks so much for that

From the sounds of it, this glass file sanding thing is a game changer. As someone who knows nothing about that, is there a particular thing to look for in one? Any recommendations? How do you sand and file parts of the model down and remove the nubs without scrapping or marking the rest of the model?

I have a leftover action base stand from years ago so I plan to build it today for Boba, he's compatible

Sanding is not ao bad, start with a lower grit to remove the nubs, then go up higher to smooth it over. The glass files work a little better, not as harsh as metal files but still removes nubs and leaves a glossier finish. Key is dont press down hard, light pressure down, more force back and forward, but really you want to move outwards in one direction to minimize the chance of over sanding.

As for panel lines, those are the channels in parts, not the seam line where parts meet. I think they mistook shadow for panel lining.

you use high-grit sandpaper or files to finish it off so they leave a smooth polished surface instead of scraping.
for sandpaper, you will need to use a rougher lower grit first to remove the material and then polish with a higher grit to remove scratch marks / roughness on the surface.
with a glass file, you can do it in one step, since even with very high grits they still cut well enough to remove nubs and leave a polished smooth surface behind.

the DSPIAE SF-13 is a 12,000 grit glass file which will remove nubs easily enough without leaving any scratch marks and is only about 10bux or less. there is also the Raser which costs ~3x as much and is a bit better.

I can't compare her with anything except a couple Little Armory rifles, but I've built 3 so far and I have a 4th one to build. The kit is 7 runners and honestly it's pretty easy. The LA rifles were a nightmare in comparison. The joint runners aren't the same hard plastic as the rest but a more flexible, slightly rubbery one? There are lots of undergates so she looks really clean and I think she's meant to be painted/customized. It's all snap but glue is recommended here and there so I used it.
The ONLY issue I've found is the peg that goes into the elbow section tends to pop off if you just pull the arm around, but I've found that this goes away once the joints have broken in a bit. But it could be my fault.
Other that that she has a lot of articulation and gets easily into dainty, sexy poses. I really love the Revoltech style shoulders, you can cross her arms. The legs are so nicely articulated too and there's a gimmick where you can lift the foot a bit from the "shoe" part and that part can also rock sideways so not only it helps with balance and posing but it's also sexy as hell.
When I get more confident I'm gonna at least do some panel lining on the girls, but even straight up they looks so good. I really love MoMo, I wish she was more popular especially since she seems to be a great beginner kit.

went back and stripped the paint off of all the parts, then reprimed and repainted the kit. I ran out of white paint and have been engineering some additional gimmicks that weren't in the original post, so it'll look a bit different to the old one. I also took photos at a better time of day.

I'm pretty sure you could scratchbuild something like this out of scrap runners. the adjustable frame is nice though, but with runners you can build bespoke ones for each kit using the actual runners from the kit itself, then chuck it once you're done or leave it for your next project.

if you have the opposite side shoulder piece and they're the same shape you can try to make a mold and cast a new one.
for the forehead piece it's a pretty small and simple shape so you may be able to scratchbuild a replacement in roughly the right shape

like you, I thought the turn A was goofy and weird looking at first, but particularly after watching the show and seeing it in motion, the actual elegance of the design became apparent.

It's too cold for me to spray outdoors and my apartment doesn't have the space for spraying indoors.
Any airbrush topcoats recommendations preferably gloss and then matte for extra protection.

by the way it seems vallejo mecha varnish is an acrylic clear coat just like "mr. topcoat" which is the most popular gunpla topcoat. (mr. super clear is different, it's lacquer based instead of acrylic)

New painter. I've set up on top of my oven with the range hood oven fan running. Seems good to suck up all the fumes, never seen anyone suggest this method however. Is this retarded?
