If you don't want to sand get a quality pair of single edge nippers and some good scalpel blades. Trim the nub down in layers and cut the last little bit off with the scalpel. Fuck sanding.

Just started getting into gunpla. This is an MG I did the other day with panel-line accents and stickers only

It isn't painted, and honestly at this point painting anything scares me because I don't own an airbrush. Is it possible to paint them without an airbrush and not have them look like shit?

If you're just getting started, one basic thing you can do is topcoating the bare plastic. You have to be careful about it since it can make your panel lining run, but it gets rid of the plastic look and makes a kit look like five times better without any real effort.

Take it from me, hand painting a Gunpla is one of the worst things you can do if you don't know what you're doing. I ruined a MG RX-78-2 ver 1.5 this way once over a decade and a halfago, by just hand-brushing unthinned enamel paint onto the whole thing, on top of fucking up some of the decals. Thankfully the breadth of information on the internet makes it harder to create monstrosities these days.

Depending on how much you want to get further into Gunpla, you could try it out on a kit with few colors, since that means buying fewer spray cans. For a single model, those spray cans probably won't set you back a whole lot, depending on where you source them, and you can re-use them later on another model if you get further into the hobby.

In the very long run an airbrush is cheaper and more effective since it lets you paint in colors that don't exist in spray cans and be far more efficient in volume usage, but it requires a decent amount of research and a lot of investment in hardware (not only the compressor + hose + airbrush, but also respirator, ventilation, tools and chemicals for cleaning and maintaining the airbrush, etc.). There's a decent number of YT channels out there dedicated to airbrushing model kits, so doing basic research isn't super difficult.

Yes, there are a minority of gunpla hobbyists who do brush painting only. It has a distinct look and requires more skill than airbrushing. Picrel is a brush painted kit an anon from /m/ posted. >>>/m/22213980
Brush painting is also pretty much mandatory if you want good weathering but very few mecha fags are into that, they tend to go for clean pristine robots.

It's much more common for warhammer minis so you might wanna check the warhammer thread in this board.

brush painting is fine but it takes a lot more patience and you need to do it the right way. prime your part, thin your paint to the consistency of milk, then paint several thin, smooth layers, allowing for drying time in between. if you get lazy and try to get it done in one shot with unthinned paint, it will look like shit.

I suggest practicing on something first if you're gonna handpaint. Or just buy a few rattlecans for now (make sure to look up proper spraying technique too).

Lacquer spray cans from tamiya, and enamel or acrylic hand paints. Masking tape also for obvious reasons.

I just did a Zaku in tamiya champagne gold last night and it came out great, but that is a very subtle gold that almost looks silver depending on the lighting. It looks good, I would recommend their metallic paints

Where do you all buy your primers and thinners? I assume the big metal cans you can buy at Home Depot don't work for paint thinning. Hobby Lobby doesn't sell either in the volume I need, so is Amazon my only option?

Newtype usually has the good primer but if I'm ordering a bunch of rattle cans I use a smaller modeling store called Hobbylinc. Their shipping is higher but the paints are cheaper.

I've actually had them finished for a really long time now but I've had zero time for finishing them, the last step was just the canopies which in the end had to be handpainted with lacquer, didn't end up too bad I think?

depends on the paints. you can in fact buy gallon jugs of cellulose thinner (aka lacquer thinner) to use with lacquers and white spirits / mineral spirits to use for enamels. acrylic paints can be thinned with distilled water.
however you'll miss out on stuff like the retarder additives in hobby-brand leveling thinners that help to get a smoother gloss coat.

I don't feel too comfortable giving recommendations on what to do, as most of my experience comes from knowing what not to do, so you might want to get additional opinions on this.

The type of spray you use ultimately depends on how you want the piece to look once it comes out the other end of the process. Flat/matt just makes your pieces come out with zero shininess, which can be good for kits that you don't want to come out looking shiny (for instance, warships and aircraft). Gloss makes the piece come out with a sheen, like a sports car, so handy if you want to make your kit look like it just came back from a professional shining service. And all of this can be modified further with different types of top coat.

So I built this RG Sazabi about a month ago and I spoke about it a bit here. I made a lot of little mistakes during the build, but applying the decals and my first attempt to topcoat it left me really disappointed in it. It bothered me enough that I decided to buy the exact same kit and make another attempt. But before I go an butcher another RG Saz I want to ask a few things. I want to highlight certain sore points and example of things I was unhappy with.

You can see here that with the decals I used out of the box there were many cases where the decal itself didn't quite fit the way I hoped. Little bits of the decals kinda jut out over corners and edges. And on the rounded part of the helmet it left like air pockets. It might be because I'm new, but I want to hear some suggestions on how to improve.

A few more examples of what I'm talking about with the decals. The edges stick out to me so much. I'm not sure if I misaligned them or if I'm supposed to use my knife and trim them down before I apply.

You can also see my atrocious first crack at top coating. The speckled finish bugs the shit out of me. At the moment it looked okay before it dried.

I used a brown panel lining marker to try and bring out details here. I was told you would use the brown marker on red yellow and orange plastics. It looks okay. The issue came when I tried to topcoat it. The topcoat made the brown run and drip down, and you can see it looks way more yellow now.

This means you did not get even coverage and did not spray enough, or possibly sprayed from too far away. Immediately after spraying, your piece should look uniformly wet and glossy, but not so wet it's dripping and the topcoat is pooling in crevices.

Yeah, go ahead and order the waterslides. This was also not a great top coat job. I'd recommend buying a cheap kit and get some waterslides to practice doing the waterslides and top coating with first though.

Those are stickers, not decals. You can attempt to cut the excess clear bits away prior to application, and use a thin sharp metal object to detach the sticker from its backing (and wipe down said metal object and surface with alcohol prior to application) so that as little dust/particulate gets an opportunity to make contact as possible. Even then, the sticker will still be quite obvious on the kit if you look close enough. There's no way to avoid this besides not using stickers to begin with.

At the end of the day though, there's not much you can do unless you're willing to shell out a bunch of money on extras. The pictures you see of people with spotless perfect kits, they spend an ungodly amount of time getting everything just absolutely perfect, spend money on all the tools and resources to back their efforts, and have dozens of kits' worth of experience knowing how to airbrush and topcoat their pieces just so. For this being your third kit ever, it's fairly decent, though obviously room for improvement. The important thing is to recognize this fact, and put in the effort to improve as you are doing right now.

you can achieve that "printed on" quality with the decals by applying top coat on it, and sanding off the "edges" to level the sticker/decal with the layer of paint.

They're delicate, but more forgiving than stickers when it comes to placement as you can keep moving them around as long as they're wet. They also end up looking much nicer than stickers once dried.

Long story short, they're very easy as long as you're not hamhanding. Cut waterslide away from sheet with scissors, dip cutout completely in water then place on table/tray, wait around 30-50 seconds (may vary depending on the era of the waterslide), move cutout to piece, then gently nudge waterslide off of cutout onto piece. I find that it helps if the surface of the piece is also at least a bit wet, though try not to overdo it since it might dilute the adhesive of the waterslide.

It is particularly helpful if it is mark setter or some other decal solution instead of water.

The main thing: use a wet qtip to manipulate the decal on the surface, never use a dry one.

When you apply the decals and stickers is up to you, I find that applying them to completed limbs is most optimal. Top coating is also best done at the limb level, no need to leave it to dry that long as they'll be ready to handle at most 1-2 hours after spraying.

Okay I'm confused now. I've read multiple other posts and articles online about top-coating and almost all of them recommend doing it AFTER applying stickers, even with coats like mr hobby flat clear and tamiya flat clear

what he meant about burning off the print is when you try to sand it over to remove the edges so the sticker levels itself with the top coat, giving that "painted on" effect. since the ink is printed above the sticker film, you'll run a huge risk of erasing that ink, so you have to be more careful when working with stickers compared to decals.

honestly i havent tried doing it on stickers myself since i always replace them with decals if possible. i just assumed it would work on stickers, at least the transparent warning marking ones. you will certainly erase the print though if the sticker is paper or metallic

some time ago someone was crying about the BMC danmo not being available everywhere.
works pretty well but I only got the 0.5/0.8mm, the 0.2/0.4mm is more fit for most detailing purposes and embracing seam lines which is what I'd assume most people getting it for.

again, this won't work.
you will sand through the ink on the stickers before you achieve any form of leveling. it works with decals because they are so thin to begin with.

The eye stickers Bandai provides with their Petiture-Rise line are light years ahead of the trash that comes with their non-scale Yamato ships. They are almost as thin as water slides. All I did was give them a flat coat.

I switched over to water decals last year. Glad I did. Take a but more time and work than stickers but are more manageable to get placement right and look better. Definitely a giod way yo improve your builds early on, so dont be scared about them.

Whereas Jeeg is just baffling where it has an insane amount of articulation but they just flat out did not give him the pelvis that lets you pull out the legs, poor guy cannot do a front kick. I was a longtime TS-80 user, and it's a pretty damn good topcoat, but just factually, you can see in that pic that it's not as good as Mr. Super Clear. Notice that the lights are lighter and darks are darker on the TS-80 binder, leading to things like deeper shadows and bright hot spots on the very top. That is a bad thing. Mr. Super Clear is more neutral overall, closer to midtones. That means it is reflecting less light, and is flatter.

It's probably very hard to tell the difference when you don't have them right next to each other in an identical example, but hey, they're both pricey, so might as well buy the one that is verifiably better.

A small haul from Aliexpress. Funny enough the manufacturers are S-Model (Pak36) and SS-Model (CV9040c).

This is the first time I see a mass-produced plamo kit (not a resin kit, not a limited run, not a mom-and-pop living room shop) that comes in a reusable PET container. S-Model is a truly progressive company.

Truth be told, I was bored, and he was on Amazon same day delivery. I'm not even a big Jeeg fan. His legs are a mixed bag. His knees move a little better than I expected thanks to the collapsing panel, but they still just get barely over 90. His hips just suck altogether, the diaper blocks them. Ankles are somewhat limited too, but they work ok. At least they have rockers.

I got him for his looks, really. I've always thought Jeeg was kind of goofy looking, and getting a hyper-detailed version of that silliness appealed to me.

Frankly, I think almost all kits look bad compared to the linework. They just can't capture the same life, since the kits are all designed with straight edges, if you get what I'm saying. I wish someone would do an action figure line that actually tried to really look like the linework, mushiness and lumps and wacky proportions and all. That's what I thought RD Ver. I was thinking about getting Koto's Muv-luv kits, am I understanding it right that all 1/144 kits have much less color separation and almost no gimmicks like opening hatches and moving subarms, and generally limbs made out of 2 parts with seamline in front? Did you at least have some other Infinitism kits beforehand, this is such an odd whimsical purchase. I think(?) Jeeg still gets the furthest knee-bend out of most other Infinitism guys, but I'm not sure, same with the ankles though, I think. No idea about the hips at all, he'd be a lot better of a sell if just the hips were fixed, or if there was a workaround somehow.
I'll admit, I still think Jeeg has ugly colours, even though Kotetsushin Jeeg was pretty fun and I do like the bot itself.

You know that almost all of the technology that consumer/hobby printers use is downstream of industrial printers right? It's mostly just old tech that's no longer protected by patents or chinese companies skirting detection

The only model kits I have gotten have been Sentinel's plaiobot gurren lagann kits. I have the 3 they make but have yet to build them. How do they compare to these gundam ones by bandai? Like what would be the comparable grade to them? I'm new to all this and I don't have any bandai kits to know about scales and grades too much.

I have not built mine yet but I have heard the engineering is kind of mid. I mostly got it just to own some version of this sculpt, it's great looking. Also, beware of the tail, some have broken the joints because the connections are too tight. Prepare to possibly sand some pegs down a bit.

They 100% have use cases but I dont think model kits will be it for a long time. The plaiobot ttgl kits are similar to a full mechanics kit by bandai. More intricate than an hg but less intricate than an mg. They're good kits though. But for the most part bandai makes the best kits bar none in terms of both engineering and plastic quality.
There's some new Chinese companies making kits that are actually at and above mg quality now though too

Color separation is not 100% ideal for both 1/144 and non-scale kits, seam welding is also required for both (although Koto seams are really tight, sometimes near invisible, which is not a good thing if you need to disassemble later).

While modding is not strictly required, all of the Koto MuvLuv kits can benefit from it (as they are sometimes not quite on model and painting can be tricky unless you re-engineer some of the joints).

FDM printers aren't precise enough to give you the detail you'd want with Gunpla, and SLA printers use resin which is literally toxic to handle and brittle as all hell. With even the best FDM printer you could probably only print out stuff for 1/144 or 1/100 HG kits, while with SLA printers you're stuck with doodads that you won't ever be allowed to put stress on.

there are plenty of less toxic resins and there are resins of varying ductility and hardness. the benzene and styrene used in PS gunpla runners are both carcinogenic and neurotoxic. there's (albeit quite expensive) engineering resins that exceed the flexural yield strength of extruded polystyrene (up to 170MPa).
if you're looking to avoid "muh toxic boogeyman" you should find a different hobby.

Resin printing is an entirely different story, where you're playing with toxic liquid resins and open alcohol baths. If you already have the safety equipment for airbrushing then it's not a huge leap, but not everybody airbrushes (or even paints), so for them it is a major concern.

Water-wash resin is a thing, basedbean-based resin is a thing (it's not edible but it doesn't nearly stink as much), ABS-like resin is also a thing.

Having said all that, what SLA printer does now is put in your hands an ability to create any resin kits you want inside a small isolated box that you can easily extract fumes from and with only 1 consumable (compare that to a traditional resin casting setup that needs pressure chambers, vacuum pumps, expensive silicone and literally cyanide-based resin). It's not quite an ability to create Bandai-tier plastic kits on demand, at least not yet.

Get a 3d scanner, if you can.

Resizing a part like this via molding would be a Xylene/solvent bath up to 7-10 days, pulling and drying it before the mold dissolves and hoping you got the timing and proportions right.

A five minute scan and a 2hr print beats that to hell. Besides, I can print a crystal clear part without degassing the mold and vacuum casting, and I'd rather have rubbing alcohol in the house than bet whoever welded my pressure pot gave a shit.

You're actually right. On the other hand it also says that the thinner the coat the better the effect, so a couple of coats of thinned primer works out about the same as a single unthinned coat. I guess I'll keep the unthinned option in mind for trickier stuff like soft vinyl.

but one thing I've noticed about this primer when attempting to use it as a cheatcode for a primer for ultra thin coats of paint is that even if it's thin it's easy for it to level in a "bad" way that makes details and panels softer than doing it with something like surfacer 1500 or just straight up RAW paint-no primer, so a solution might be to thin it slightly further?

You're going to have to perform cleanup, either physical (scribing, sanding, etc) or in 3d modelling. The way Structured-Light scanners work is building a point cloud, a set of dimensional values, then averaging those to form a mesh, so you'll get fairly accurate scale, but that averaging softens details. The software's finally catching up to the hardware.

I've included another test, a 1/220 blown up to 1/100. See those ring on the conduits? On the GK they're 2mm, so they're 4.4mm on the print. If I printed it at Artifact scale, it would look more "detailed" because those distances would shrink. Just like a 2d printer, if you blow up the image you're losing resolution.

My potato cam isn't going to show you micron detail, but you can see inside the thruster bell what a 3d modeled print would look like vs the scan. For me, I wouldn't do any better with plaplate and mori-mori, so I'm satisfied.

I just built this cool Tyrannosaurus model I picked up on Amazon for $18. It has full skeleton and outside, so you can display as just bones or as the Dinosaur. I think he looks cool as this half and half.

For one, the inside of the cab has to be painted and dashboard decals have to be applied before gluing the cab together.
The bigger issue however is that none of that interior detail can possibly be seen through the tiny windows.
Making the doors open and close is not too hard, the problem is that Trumpeter in its infinite wisdom forgot to add any interior detail to the inside of the doors, so if I want the doors to open I will need to scratchbuild all of that detail.

That is lacquer based and will soak into uncured lacquer, and also kinda hits at enamel a bit iirc. Need to let the base paint dry like 24-48 hours then spray that lightly over the parts, but beter to use the blue can mr hobby on lacquer paint iirc.

It 100% depends on the brand and even line within that brand. If you're topcoating something you also want to wait at least 12 hours before doing so even with lacquers otherwise no it will not have enough time to cure enough not to cause damage when you lay a nice wet clear coat on there. Some lacquers the instructions say to wait 24 hours before even touching it let alone putting another color on top

Funny thing is, lacquer is fine if you spray the 2nd coat within an hour or after ~2days. If you spray it after a few hours, the top coat can actually not go on properly and may even peel. At least for Tamiya spray cans that has been documented. Something to do with bottom coat gassing out iirc.

the thing here is that layering lacquers is different than acrylics because it does not "cure" the same way acrylics does as it only needs to become dry, that's why you don't have to wait hours, or days before applying successive layers and can do it within minutes.

Yes, but so do the rest of the laws of physics. Much thinner coats applied by airbrush (with the correct technique, of course) would not contain the volume of gas necessary to create the pressure that would crack the topcoat above. The coat would remain improperly cured as a result, but so what?

it's just lacquers offgassing through lacquers at that point, so it's a non issue. however if you used a weaker solvent paint on top, or say fast drying thinner with metallics, it will fuck up the finish/flake as it cures.

However, if they expect to be selling you 3-packs of replacement blades, those blades are probably not as durable as GodHand ones (which last for many years with proper use). With user-replaceable blades there is also a question of blade alignment and the durablity of the screw's thread.

As for reprints, Bandai is pretty good reprinting in general, for example they reprinted MG God Gundam a year ago, which is 23 years old.

There are some series that they are rarer, but that is particular to each series, some examples: G-reco kits and 1/72 scale Macross Valkyrie kits.

never had 3d printer parts before and I am not too sure how to process with them. I am current getting another review zaku 2 ready for the kit.

Up to you, but if you don't see any leftover supports or anything obvious, prime first, sand later.

PGU is cool if you want to also get into lighting it with LEDs. The included lighting system is pretty weak and requires a dark room to see the full effect. PG Strike Freedom isn't worth the full price especially when you can build the higher detailed MGEX version for almost half the cost. Exia is kinda meh feature-wise so unless you liked the show or the mobile suit a lot I would pass. I would either go Unicorn or, if you are a super weeabo, the Red Astray.

Unicorn you get extra guns but Banshee gets those big gold crystal looking miniwings. Its the same kit besides that and the colors. Unicorn was recently restocked so you can actually find it for sale while you might have to pay scalper prices for Banshee.

I need to start my collection of lacquers and acrylics for airbrushing and hand-detailing, respectively. Which brands for each are the most readily and commonly available online, and with enough color selection to reliably paint (or at least mix for) Gunpla and eventually SLA sculptures? Most of the "lacquer" paints are just solvent based acrylic paints. Tamiya/Tamiya Lacquer, Mr. Color/Aqueous Color/Gaia Notes,Finishers,SMS,Dispae, etc.

Your water based acrylics are going to be Acrysion, Vallejo, Citadel, GWS, but the solvent based acrylics will also be hand paintable.

Where do you live. Different countries have different levels of availability for their paints.

Haha which one? Mr.Color is great. I suggest using Super Hobby and Newtype HQ if you're in the states. Citadel, Vallejo and Tamiya make good acrylics. Also try some tamiya enamels for hand painting. The only place I've gotten them in bulk was Super Hobby.

United States. There's only enamels and the GSI Creos aqueous paints at Hobby Lobby, otherwise they stock lacquer spray cans but I bought an airbrush so I wouldn't have to use those. Last time I went to a Michael's they also only had spray cans. There's a singular Gundam-specialty hobby shop in my city which may or may not stock the paints I need, which I only discovered existed today, so I'll make time to head over there some time to look.

Based on previous recommendations I have Mr. Color Leveling Thinner 400 shipping in, as well as black, gray and white Mr. Finishing Surfacer 1500 (only found the white today at Mecha Warehouse, bought two jars because may as well stock up if this shit's gonna be this hard to find).

Lacquers: Mr Color, Gaia, Tamiya are all great. MRP are nice if you can get them.
Acrylics are not the best choice for handbrushing detail, enamels are. Tamiya Enamels would be the choice.

You can spray the contents out into a jar, add some thinner and it will last you a long time (and you won't need to worry about thinning).

I sorta-kinda asked a similar question on /tg/ a few days back, apparently they prefer hand-painting their miniatures with acrylics rather than enamels. Well and good since miniatures are not Gunpla, but my aim was also towards the eventuality of buying an SLA printer and painting resin prints (things like armor conversions for my Gunpla or just the occasional bust/sculpture to look nice).

I have a bunch of old Humbrol and Testors enamels that I've used on and off to (badly) hand-paint small details in the past. Those I can keep for the small detailing on Gunpla, but acrylics are still something that I think I'll want for doing things properly in the future.

I've been painting things for about 10 years now (mostly with an airbrush with some detail hand painting) and I honestly have not used acrylics to paint anything for at least 8 years. There's simply no use case for them for me.

Start stockpiling MrPrimer 1000 or similar, extra thick CA glue, putty and low-grit sanding sponges. Aside from surface prep, the rest of the process of painting 3D prints is identical to that of plastic.

If you plan on painting minis then yeah you'll want acrylics for handbrushing theyre the standard for that medium for a reason. For hand painting on gunpla I do use tamiya enamels, but it serves a different purpose than when painting minis
