Payday is here and I have mostly fi ished my Christmas shopping after buying my brother the WFC Tigatron. So I have treated myself to Ride 3d DoTM Megatron, which I hope should arrive soon.

So soon I shall have 3 Truckbots (already have Laser Legacy Prime and I ordered SS Galvatron) and from there I am either going to grab a Huffer mold or SS Scourge.

I found SS Gamer Edition Optimus at Walmart today. I was thinking about getting him, but I was wondering, is there any reason too if I already have the old deluxe?
He's bigger, but he looks like he's alot simpler transformation wise.

I'm a super late collector and missed out on so much of studio series, it makes me sad. I grew up with bayfilms and, while I've grown to prefer the blockier and more tangible shapes of older TFs, it still sucks to miss out on so much I would've wanted. Those aftermarket prices are not kind to the wallet, either.

If studio series was flopping I am pretty sure the line would have been as dead in the water as the R.E.D line. Bayverse stuff sells well and is one of the most popular facets of the franchise whether you like it or not. Heck it even has a high ground among third party companies too.

You mean people are making the actual gun he's supposed to have. For some insane reason, the Legacy toy uses what is supposed to be his (non-detachable) thruster for a gun instead of giving him the one he used in both the show and his original toy. What's crazier is that the leaked concept art for his Legacy toy shows him with the correct gun, so go knows what the hell happened between the original idea and what we got.
Either way, those 3rd party kits have all been trying to give him his proper gun so you can keep his thruster on his ass where it belongs; shame that, even with a new gun, the way he's engineered prevents you from keeping the thruster in his abdomen in beast mode no matter what you do.
Semi-related, but has anyone released a kit with a proper Antagony head yet? There's, like, three canon looks to choose from.

That's the one I went with, afaik it's the only option that bothers to match the sculpting of the toy. Inferno hasn't had any issue holding it so far.

Hype. Really hoping Soundwave is as good as Starscream and Prime have looked so far, cause both of them are looking to be the definitive versions of those characters for me. Only Bee falling short but even then he doesn't look bad or anything, just okay.

The sbort story is the Legacy Line was intended to have to an "energon weapons" gimmicm where you could mix and match energon weapons from different figures. This seems to have beej abandoned sometime after the design began manjfacture but before it was released. As for the tank-cockpit, it is based on the age old error of people thinking Blitzwings rear was his front, so thats just how he is now.

What I will say though is that the toy is fun as hell and does a lot of interesting things for transformation, ajd it does not suffer at all if you just toss the hulk hands away, he comes with 2 guns and a shiny sword already.

Plus the hulk hands make for decent missile racks in tank mode.

Like >>10724118 says, it's a leftover from the abandoned Energeon Weapon thing, which was supposed to be the gimmick for Legacy. If you remember Core Iguanus, Core Hot Rod and Core Skywarp's weapons and how they combined, it was supposed to be a continuation of that. It did poorly, though, so they ditched it in favor of the whole 'Evo Fusion' thing. Blitzwing was already complete by the time of the switch, though, so he got stuck with the useless Hulk Hands (which, in the original concept, were supposed to split into three parts for easier attachment to other weapons instead of just the two we got)and nobody else to fuse his things with.

i will stand by til the day i die that each of the 5 bay movies is great in one way and terrible in another. Yes, I could rank them, but it would be like ranking all the grades between B+ and A-
there's just not that much fluctuating, in terms of total quality. individual aspects? Total random crapshoot rollercoaster. No two have the same flaws. they play musical chairs with which thing they should fail at, and which to succeed.

I mean, absolutely! if you had like, a perfect robotic director/screenwriter, whom you could feed info to and say "do this" you would say "the human moments from the 5th movie, the battles and badass designs from the 2nd, the plot from the 4th, the character moments from the 3rd, and the pacing of the 1st.

whereas you would tell it to AVOID the human moments from the 4th, the plot from the 5th, the pacing of the 2nd, the designs from the 3rd, and the battles of the 1st.

i think. it's been a while since I had this really figured out, and I have only seen each movie once or twice.

I wish I enjoyed them. I liked the first movie, but it just felt like there was no growth, just the same Bay-style camera work and a script that made no sense, with generic throw-away lines from the robots.

one thing I have NEVER heard anyone praise is the camerawork.
i adore the way these movies look, I love the explosions, the huge crazy setpieces like skyscrapers falling down, the truly alien look of the cybertronian tech. i love 97% of how 90% of the the transformers look (just not their faces). and I love the fucking fight choreography, even the slow-motion spinning shit.
but then they hide it all behind shakycam so you can't see it. and then you wonder why the layman thinks "it's all just random pieces of metal moving around"

Can somebody explain to me why fansites and some official sources consider the characters that appeared in Japanese shows to be different characters from their Hasbro market versions, even when the designs are virtually identical?
Like, why is Snarl not just considered the American name for Tasmania Kid, like Jazz and Meister?

Because in things like Beast Wars Sourcebook they are listed as different characters. Injector and that guy there though are extremely different, so even if they are samefag it is more like the same actor playing two different characters.

yeah that makes sense to me, this is not a case of "they localized tasmania kid to snarl" it was "they made a random toy, gave it a random name, then japan invented a character based on that toy, with his own name (and in some cases, different color) so it made sense to unilaterally consider them all their own separate guys. Now, whether those guys can or should share a universe, THAT is up for debate.

what I don't get is why predacons would be fighting a giant injector guy. he's obviously also a predacon

I picked up the two-pack Arcee today, and she is light-years ahead of the same class Optimus. She really feels like they put the all the class's budget into her.
Swivel wrists, double-jointed knees, great head movement. Really, all she needed was some kind of ankle tilt.
I saw the core class one, once, and she blows it out of the water.
Very much recommended

The scene was scripted and illustrated, but cut from the movie along with two Cogman scenes.

I especially liked the forest scene, and not specifically about camera work or special effects, but having the Decepticons speak an alien language in the first film was a nice touch.. There really was some nice CGI, but you're right, it was obscured by the damn shaky cam.

The simple fact of the matter is that Bay has a skewed, immoral view of humanity and doesn't actually value a life. He considers murder and violence for violence's sake a virtue, and concepts like "mercy" and "humanity" as weaknesses that deserve a violent punishment.

Bay loves to have his heroes indiscriminately murder, either by mindlessly tearing through nameless drones or executing pleading, crying foes, but he also clearly doesn't respect the lives of his "heroes" either. Jazz is torn apart with little fanfare and no mourning, and he revels in showing Ratchet executed and butchered like an animal.

Michael Bay and his output represent the absolute worst of humanity. It glorifies the depths of cruelty people will bend to, all dolled up in a mindless orgy of violence and military fetishization. They are the closest thing to true evil that any form of media can be.

the rule is well-understood on /co/
whether it's CG or practical effects, if the special effect is meant to represent reality, e.g. photorealistic CG dudes interacting with humans, or latex-and-taxidermy-eyes animatronics, then it's /tv/. If the CG is meant to look like a fake character, or it's a foam and felt puppet meant to be basically a tangible piece of real-time real-life animation, it's /co/. the Smurfs movie is /co/. that said, being based on a cartoon helps. you could argue that about the bay movies, but that's a stretch. it's really based on a toyline primarily.

Well, not only is his alt mode based on an unreleased scene from the film, his robot mode is also based on his concept art and not the model used in the 'finished' product.
The reason he, specifically, got a toy out of the group was because he was actually supposed to be a bit of a badass - to elaborate on that missing scene, after the sub evaded Steelbane and dropped cade and what's-her-face off in the sunken spaceship, the HMS Alliance would have transformed (revealing herself to have been Nautica) and gone back outside to keep the dragon distracted while the humans went looking for the staff they came for. Steelbane would have fought with her and eventually killed her 9hence her disappearance from the movie from that point on) and rendezvoused with the other knights just in time for the ship to start lifting off. He then showed up in time to intervene in the fight between Bumblebee and the mind-controlled Optimus, before single-handedly beating the crap out of the latter and preparing to execute him when the Decepticons showed up and interrupted to steal the staff.
I don't remember how things actually went down in the final version of the film, though - something about the G.I. Joe stand-ins chasing them instead of Steelbane, I think? Did they ever explain what happened to the HMS Alliance in the film, or did they just forget about her after she dropped the humans off?

I mean, considering the name never went beyond the original script and was never mentioned at all in the final movie, plus she never gets to actually transform (the in-universe excuse being that she's from WW2 and has a busted transformation cog; real reason most likely being lack of budget to animate an underwater battle between her and a giant pissed off mechanical wyvern), I wouldn't be surprised if 'Nautica' was just a placeholder name they were using up until they scrapped the idea of using her as anything more than a mode of transportation; as it is, the concept art looks more like Sea Spray to me than anything remotely resembling Nautica in any incarnation. Then again, there's plenty of bots in the films who don't look anything like their usual selves, so who knows? It died on the cutting room floor, so we'll likely never know.

I found this retro Starscream on clearance the other day. probably a dumb purchase but I've always been enamored by the nosecone transformation. it's never been done again, the way the nose rotates around the cockpit while the cockpit rotates and fills in the space that the arms fold out of.
anyway the big win is probably the Megatron gun. also the wings are 5mm I think...

Anon, we DID get a director's cut. Not in a quality Kingdom of Heaven kind, but an extended cut where they added a few scenes, including this. Bay's overall vision for ROTF was shite from the beginning because of the pacing and the inclusion of Sam's college scenes. Apparently they pulled the same shit with Age of Extinction, where non IMAX showings cut out the parts where Hound, Drift and Crosshairs talk to one another in Lockdown's ship and then the Aliens-esque headcrab spit. (it just skips to them finding Optimus)

It's actually a little weird, if you think about it - Steelbane got a toy accurately depicting his alt mode from the removed scene, yet Nautica, who was part of the same scene, has concept art of her alt mode they could have worked with, and still appeared in the final movie to an extent, somehow didn't get one. Likewise, Cogman got his Transtector from his first removed scene where he fought Blackout, while Nitro Zeus' toy kept the detachable head with compatible Headmaster slot for Cogman to hijack his body from the second removed scene. That means that the cuts happened fairly late in production - late enough that the toys were made still reflecting the earlier draft - yet there apparently was never a toy for Nautica planned at all despite her bot mode being cut during the same time period.

My G2 gang so far. Shadowstrip is the newest and he is really fun by himself, which is great seeing as G2 Menasor isn't confirmed yet. I really love how everything shifts on him, its one of the more interesting car transformations IMO. Likely due to him turning into something more exotic than a lambo.

Also I still don't see the hate for Road Rocket's mold. My only complaint is that I would like the deco to be more faithful to the original, and I think I would have preferred she come with a gun or something like the old buzz saw stickm the "shuriken" isnt doing it for me- but at least RR's is painted.

Third - Optimal Optimus was basically his equivalent of a Transmetal II. They haven't done anything with his Transmetal I design (blue metal monkey) in decades.
Sadly, they said they weren't doing Transmetals (which is a shame. As awesome as the Tarantulas we got was, most people wanted his iconic Transmetal design); then again, we got Transmetal II Megatron and are getting Silverbolt and Tigerhawk (Fuzors are technically Transmetals in-universe, since they seem to get the same benefits and were immune to Megs' virus in Beast Machines), so who knows.

Best Transformer? This is just personal picks, but I'd say G1 Powermaster Optimus Prime with Apex Armor and/or Studio Series Devastator. Both incredibly fun toys to play with.
I could do a top 10 if I think about it... but another amazing figure is Thrilling 30 Springer. That toy is majestic.

So I was lucky enough to have an autistic ass dad who bought us a Grand Maximus (I thought it was Fort Max) when I was a kid, and I loved the shit out of it. Loved it. Im an old head, so I remember going to costco/sam's club with my mom as a kid and seeing an entire pallet of PM Prime. I wanted that toy forever, but of course back then, that toy was expensive, even for 80's money. So it was a no go. It wasn't until I got into collecting about 10 years ago with my wife that I found the TRU reissue with apex armor at a toy show for around $100. I had to have it, and it made my inner child so freaking happy.

A few years later I found a complete (but broken clip) PM prime at a show for $45. and now I have both. And bothe are displayed because of how awesome they are.

I was a teen during BW and didn't had any of the toys, the only upgrades the legacy toy has over the original are the headsculp and ankle rockers, both have retarded hands, none looks like a real ant, but at least the original looks like a cool monster bug.

I didn't own the original toy until recently, and can confirm the legacy one is utter garbage in comparison. It does so many things wrong - the ant legs being a mess in both modes, the tiny robot hands, the thruster now being a gun (meaning he can no longer fly and shoot at the same time, the thing he's known for doing on the show), not having the correct gun/flamethrower, the dinky ant antenna, and so on - the old 90's toy just utterly mogs it in virtually every way other than the robot head sculpt.

I am really starting to sour on this mold. His heels are always nearly popping off, his wrists are never fully straight, they don't rotate, and even once you transform him the cannon peg keeps his right wrist from fully folding in. He isn't very fun or interesting to transform. Does the Earthrise version of the mold fix any of this? What Megatron shouod I replace him with?

I think it’s the lack of paint that kills them for me, in fact some of them do just look like oversized Studio Series figures. The appeal of MP for the tooners and BW fans is being able to own a physical version of a cartoon character or a 3D mode, and I don’t really get that feeling with a lot of the MPM figures.
That being said, the upside is that they’re usually way cheaper and aren’t as prone to paint chipping compared to regular MP figures so I guess I can’t complain too much lol.

Well you need to understand this, really it’s not because of moral reasons why superheroes don’t kill, especially by this point where almost all the of the MCU heroes have no problems with killing.
It’s mostly so they can just have a recognizable rogues gallery. You can’t have a hero without a villain, especially when that hero’s adventure goes on indefinitely, and if he tears through bad guys with every story, sooner or later you’re gonna be stuck with the most bottom of the rung villains. Lol that already happens, too, look at all the D-list villains in the DC universe, so imagine what happens when they’re even more disposable.
Frankly iconic villains are kind of like lightning in a barrel, killing them off is like throwing away a golden ticket, who knows if you can recapture it. Imagine if Batman finally killed all of his iconic rogues and now we’re stuck with whatever the fuck modern comic writers come up with.

It isn't helped that barring the rare freak moments, the G1/BW MP figures are in general very well made and have moments that make you go "ah ha, neat" in them. Meanwhile MPMs tend to struggle to clear the "adequate" bar.

Which MPMs have issue, other than movie 1 prime (so I've heard)? I've got Blackout and he is a seriously incredible figure, and I want Bonecrusher... but Starscream doesn't look great in his jet mode.

Blackout though is just too cool. One of the best helicopter modes I've ever seen and the robot mode is incredibly cool. Having a little Scorponok is nice, but I find myself wishing he had full articulation even if it would sometimes be a pain in the ass.

To be fair, almost everyone in Victory were combiner sized or bigger apart from certain examples. So it's most likely Hasbro is going to scaled them to be more like the original toyline (with a few exceptions like Deathsaurus) rather than the anime. Honestly? Steelbane. As was discussed between the end of the previous thread and beginning of this one, he was a cool concept (that got cut from the film) but was executed poorly as a toy. I think the dude deserves another crack at it with a little more care put into him so that he's not a floppy mess with very visible robot feet poking out. It would be cool if they did movie Megatron with his original dragon alt mode, too, but unlike with Steelbane, that one never made it to toy form.

Unpopular opinion but I really don’t like beast wars in general none of the figures are cool they’re all gross and scary. They’re scary and make me think that the robots hurt animals, it’s really sad and i remember seeing them on tv as a kid and it scared me bad enough to make me cry. They’re like skinwalkers, they’re scary :(

The clear plastic is fine. It's not brittle at all, and has a neat pearlescent coat that pops the details out.

A lot of figures back then had trouble standing because of the primitively engineered feet, so I don't see this as an Inferno-specific gripe.

I like the old head a lot because I never got to watch Beast Wars, and without the nostalgia of the show blinding you, it's the better design. Both cartoon and Legacy have really weird heads, they're wide and flat, almost sharklike, with a huge chin. It's weird. The original toy is well proportioned overall and just looks like some kind of impish devil or demon.
