Was out of town and saw the second set of mutants. This makes the first and only time I've seen them hit any store in the state. They were basically piled up on all the other figures. Surprised it was at a Wal-Mart too.

Since I was out and about, I got lucky and found the black and white Ronin. Picked up Mondo Gecko too, since he actually looked decent. Paint was pretty sloppy on all of the new mutant figures.

Someone can give a more detailed version, but they royally fucked up the figure with the head being giant compared to the test version and were cunts about calling a mulligan and spiking the release once fans saw the abomination that they were getting instead of what was promised, effectively single handedly giving Super7 a huge influx of people dropping NECA for Super7's TMNT line (where they had a non-fucked up April) as far as people telling NECA to fuck off over their anti-customer take on the whole issue.

Only this year has NECA finally basically called an audible and put out a "fixed" version of the figure, meaning fans who stuck by NECA were fucked and denied a proper April for about four years, allowing NECA to bleed customers to the superior Super7 line.

The Danny issue seems to be the placement of the stamp, the space between the eyes and lips is correct but it wasn't centered right. AFAIK this April head was just plain misconfigured across the board. I display her with the headset head because it was OK compared to her toon head variant. Also god damn that toddler with raspberry juice spray around her mouth looks so bad up close in this picture. I can't remember if the head looked that bad in hand.

I think Neca is aware that selling the Perry's separately would probably result in the Hazmat suit one sitting in warehouses, selling it with the main look of the character for less than 2 single figures is probably the best way to appeal to completionists while not risking overproducing a low demand figure.

Yeah, apparently they just haven't been able to get in contact with him. Some people say they did reach him and he said no, but I haven't seen any official source. It's not something they'd hide either, they were upfront about Elias Koteas having said no which was why the original Casey release had no unmasked head (though he did eventually change his mind).

They did get in contact with him, but he's an old Japanese man and doesn't get the whole toy thing. The official source has been in various interviews between Fwoosh, Pixel Dan, and whenever it's been brought up with Trevor on Toy Anxiety.

I think they're still trying, and there was a rumor that the son got involved and may have helped things along. HOPEFULLY that's true, but it's all rumors right now. Trevor seemed really enthusiastic about the future of the movie line back at NYCC/SDCC though, so there could be some hope there.

The arms wouldn't be any thicker, and you'd probably lose mobility on the shoulders. For a figure with limited arm movement already I think it would hurt it more than help.

Honestly I was kinda fine with the weirdly handsome J Rocker Rat King, I was more disappointed that the body is just more... Plain? A lot of the gross details and accessories got nixed and those were always the highlight of the old toys and the S7 versions.

What i think actually happened
is they made a good proportionate april
then someone was like "hang on, this makes her nearly as tall as shredder, we've gotta cut her down to size a bit"
and so they scaled it down
then they went "well now she looks out of scale, her head looks so small compared to other humans"
so they embiggened her head and said "There, that ticks all the checkboxes we've currently been given, she is now neither too tall nor is her head too small compared to other humans, let's send it off"
and in the process of making the head bigger but trying to close up the hole at the bottom, they gave her a very soft chin that looks wrong. so it was just a mess all around
and by the time they got to fixing her, the budget was not there to make a brand new april, so they just shrank the head, SLIGHTLY elongated the torso, and elongated the neck. Now they could tick more checkboxes. "she is now taller, her head is no longer so big. you are now content."
But we aren't, though.

I think it's because Trevor sculpts things forgetting to use the whole cartoon as a visual reference instead of one errant screenshot, which is why he had to redesign the Turtle Van after everyone pointed out the roof hump was too big. It also explains the long neck on second April, because she does have a long neck in some scenes of the cartoon, but that's because the cartoon is wildly inconsistent even when they weren't fucking up the animation from incompetence. There are scenes where she has her collar popped and it comes up around her hair, and others where her collar is popped and they've elongated her neck so her entire head sits above the collar.
You have to Dremel the head out to push it down far enough to look good.

so now it appears to be 'okay here, this is better, right?' because pre-orders for rat king never went away, they just changed what you get if you pre-order 'wave 10' or whatever. now this appears to be the new 'wave 11' of which I'm getting exactly one guy, which is a new low for this line. though I have to admit, parts of this leo appeal to me. His non-belt-buckle-emblem look, the straight swords... if the geta are removable, this might be quite tempting. especially if you can nudge the baldric over to his other shoulder.
The foot soldier though, no. if he looked like the Mutatin' one, maybe. I have a lot of 'stalge for that toy. But they honestly would have done better to give us a toon/game color Foot (I love that color scheme.) Or just another palette swap with some neat accessories. and it doesn't look like they scaled up his small gun and he doesn't even have the too-small pinchy weapon anymore at all. I feel super bad for super 7 because this isn't gonna go well for them, but hopefully it's smooth sailing going forward, now that we've hit an okay compromise agreement with playm8s

Apart from Wacky Action Turtle variants, 89 needs Traag, and Usagi, and 90 needs Undercover Don, Fugitoid, Killer Bee, Needle Nose, Panda Khan, and Pizza Face. The likelihood of most of those is slim, especially Usagi since Stan has been pretty vocal over the years about how shit he thinks the design is.

I'll be honest, I'm going off memory from an interview I read about 20 years ago, but the main thing that stood out to me was him saying that the Playmates figure was "uncharacteristic of Usagi." He never complained about the inaccuracies, but that it "made him look like a He-man villain", so I always took that to mean the Hulk-smash grimace on his face that he disliked the most, since Usagi was always grumpy, but I don't ever remember him looking like a psychotic rage fuelled monster.
Maybe he disliked the inaccuracies you listed too, but what stood out was him saying the figure "broke Usagi's character."
All those points in quotations are paraphrasing, but are approximations of what stood out to me from the interview.
Of course, take that with a grain of salt. Like I said, my hazy memory of an interview from 20 years ago isn't proof, and I haven't found any recent interviews where he goes into detail about what his issue with it was.

The entire line looked in danger of collapse with Playmates squealing like a pig under a gate about “design theft” but a compromise looks to have been reached. Good for them, it’s my favorite tmnt line because I remember the toys more than even the cartoon.

as I expected, 'original toy head' is my favorite, though the 'more like the toon' head is a close second. her nose just looks funny
Skin tone looks fine to me but she SURE is Irish that's for sure. melanin has never graced one cell of this skin. and we still have super7's loose pin hips, so it's back to the polyurethane. all the other joints are good and tight. Man do you think she has the turtles logo on the back of her jumpsuit so that the toy couldn't be confused for anything else? branding was really important for them early on
i do not suggest ever flexing her briefcase's hinge, it turned a worrying white immediately and looked like it was ready to come apart.
I also forgot her turtle comm was different from the turtles' ones.. it's a compact! on accounta she's a girl. the image of it is clearly Toon donatello minus the pupils, interestingly.
What is the point of the shin-height tripod for the camera? what kinda footage could she get with that?

if you think about it though, that is probably the most work. you gotta think up a clever stage layout with fun interactivity that isn't just a repeat of old levels, do all the new sprite assets for the backgrounds and props, you gotta program and sprite new bosses... the DLC we got where it was just a single screen was a lot easier, I imagine. and they still put in a bit of interactivity in terms of hazards.
what's amazing to me is there are still new sprite-edit enemies once you get past the final boss and continue on..

the whole trapezius area seems to have a lot of trouble these days, they often build it up too tall I guess so the shoulder has more of a socket to pop into, with more upper reinforcement, but.... it ruins a lot of looks.

overall though muckman is super nice. I wish they wouldn't always package super7 knees/thighs rotated, not sure what's going on there, but easily fixed. also his pelvis is a very conspicuously separate piece, including a cut-off of the belly goop, yet as far as I can tell there is no waist articulation. Thankfully the thigh pins are not too loose this time, but the outward-flex of the thighs is.. which is much easier to fix with polyurethane.
his alternate hands are kinda weird. the goop in the palms seems sculpted specifically to hold some accessory he doesn't have. like the left seems to have goop sculpted to grab a billiard ball or something
