I did a heavy arms back when I was like 11 and hated it because my msia heavy arms was so boss, during the pandemic I did a HG gauf because 08th slaps.

Life is hard and between the baby the wife the dog and the trying not to run out of heat or food deep in the mountains of west Virginia I very carefully did two gunpla kits in the box on my lap on the couch

I know I need to spend some more time sanding and I can't take a picture to save my life but I'm having a ball. I want to go grab the RG God gundam from hobby lobby.

The kiddo is 4 and asked me repeatedly what I was doing and seemed so interested in the process. She looks over the runners and goes "woooaaah".

We had a casual session of gun and woosh noises and she's careful enough not to detonate the kit but respectful enough not to get them down while I'm out of the room.

Life is difficult but rewarding.

feel free to grab the RG God, but I would highly, highly advise against it being your next kit unless you are ready to take it extremely slow and buy new tools. RGs have a substantial amount of tolerance fits where leaving residual gate material to the level in the pics provided will cause things to not properly fit together at all. I think the Zakus/Goufs would be good kits to continue practicing on. Not saying you couldn't do the RG, but you wouldn't be able to approach it in the same way you have the Leo and Heavyarms.

If you want a great kit from Hobby Lobby go for the Orgin Zaku, which is a fantastic kit right out of the box. Lots of detail, big selection of guns your kiddo would love and overall a great kit. Definitely want to grab something to do panel lines with because there is a bunch on the kit, which is a good thing. I normally say fuck the panel line markers but your busy, and they sell em at Hobby Lobby. Consider getting a display base that they have too. You know about the bi-weekly sale, right? Also, il contribute a WIP. Pic related is what I'm working on, the MG Dynames they sell at hobby lobby

I use to live in wv top kek. Hope you are doing well. As the other anon said you may want to pickup a panel liner, pour type marker or tamiya bottles. There is a gunpla shop near mount lookout if thats close to you. Also a glass file would be ideal at grinding the nubs left on the kit after cutting the parts from runners.

I'll do my best to cop some monoeyes, I'll let you know if the tike gets down with it.so far she favors heavy arms but I think it's because I have the Leo actually holding the shield so it tends to explode off of it, and the hand top cover fell so we slithered around the floor looking for it.

GF got me the Godhands for my birthday. Do I need the leather holder and special oil or if I'm not a fucking tard and properly cut from the runner with my junker and at the thinnest point for trimming with the godhand will I be okay? I live in a mild climate with proper HVAC, so heat, cold and humidity aren't a problem.

False, I dropped a piece in some lacquer thinner once and it immediately started fizzing and dissolving. The piece didn't wholly dissolve but there was very recognizable damage over the entire thing.

Given a choice between Tamiya and Mr Color paints, which one would you choose? Got a gift card for a store that's got shitty pricing on things outside of paints and they only have those two lines available.

For acrylics most people seem to go for Mr. Color more, since they've have a phenomenal lineup for years. Tamiya for enamels, but that's mostly because the alternatives (Humbrol, Testors, Revell) are all ass for Gunpla.

Yeah Mr Color and Mr Color GX are lacquer. In fairness, I use Mr Color, Mr Color GX, Gaia Notes, and Tamiya near interchangeably with Mr Leveling Thinner (use Gaia Metallic Master for metallic).

The actual paint pigment is also Acrylic, it's just no one wants to type out "Water Based Acrylic" and "Organic Solvent Based Acrylic" when differentiating. It's technically based on the MSD not a "true" lacquer. And they do this to avoid false advertising lawsuits, because of someone will call them out if they label their paint as lacquer when it's not.

Ironically, the Aqueous Color line is like the Tamiya regular line in that if you use Mr. Leveling thinner it becomes a much better paint.

This was my first 144 scale build and it was annoying because of my ham hands. The tiny parts are annoying. Does the 1/100 scale have parts that tiny on their builds too? I feel like i should jump to 1/60 just for comfortable building.

It was mostly the really small parts like the head and hands and the little yellow parts that i kept fumbling. I feel like MGs should be good so i dont get frustrated as much because i didn't really want to get into PG anyway for the size. I'll get a couple of each and see what's good.

HGs are the easiest to build outside of Entry Grade. MGs not only have significantly more parts, but also the parts are more complex and some are even smaller than what you find on an HG. If you have ham hands problems, an MG would not serve you well. Maybe an RE/100, but that line is essentially a dead-end experiment that Bandai abandoned.

Gundam Base going anon here, the event starts tomorrow (there's going to be some Genshin VA's there as well apparently) at 12PM local time. I'll probably go straight to the Gundam tent to buy my own wishlist and take pictures of all the goods. Assuming there isn't a purchase limit per customer, I might even pre-buy some of the super popular kits before uploading the pictures and posting the Google Form. I'll probably get back from the event 19-21 hours from now, which is when I'll post the Form. Then I'll make the purchases on the second day of the event, and work out the invoices and shipments over the next week.

Again, I have no idea what to expect at the event, like what Gunpla will be available or if they're going to limit purchases per attendee. If they are going to limit the purchases, then unfortunately this whole thing is going to be a bust, but I'll let everyone know as soon as I can so that everyone stays informed.

I have a couple of kits I want to paint but can't for reasons, could I paint them after building or should that be done while all the pieces are still separate? I figure it should be fine since you would need to have them at least partially assembled for seam welding, but I'm worried about how painting the joints would go.

It's best to paint while the pieces are separate, because you can coat the entire visible surface without worrying about other pieces getting in the way. Any surfaces you don't want to paint you can tape over.

If you've already assembled the kit, use some guitar picks to pry the pieces apart, but be as careful as you can and be prepared that you may very well break some of the pegs in the process.

12 year olds can use knives fine lol, no need for safety glasses. Just show him how to do it safely and he'll be good to go. The new EGs (rx78, nu, strike) are all great for beginners if he's not into the SD style. Like the other anon said, the pieces for those can just be popped off with your fingers, but if you think he'll actually get into the hobby you might as well start him off right with nippers to get the parts off the runner.

HG's like 2-3 sittings if they're not overly complicated. MGs vary wildly, as do RGs. Koto stuff is also all over the place, the more simplistic FAGs and MDs are like 3-4 sittings and some of the bigger FA or Hexagear stuff is going to take a while.

The Gundam tent was basically the second-biggest thing there, outside of the main stage with the Genshin VA's. They had a section for building Entry Grade RX-78-2's and the participants could keep the kit (very much like that Build Divers episode), a green screen for posing for pictures and one of the Gundam games, but the main attraction was the Gunpla store. I took several pictures of what they had available: https://imgur.com/a/addCAoW

There was actually only a single clear color (the trio from AGE), and they had a wide selection of kits from the most popular and recent series. What surprised me the most was that they had the RG Epyon and Perfect Grades, and both versions of MG Sazabi Ver. Ka, I think the Titanium Coat sold out on P-Bandai within minutes of release.

No price tags on the shelves, I had to scan to see how much each kit cost. The in-store markup seems to be about twice the yen price on the Gundam Wikia. The RG Epyon cost me $59, and I bought a PG Unicorn for $250.

I'll give it a bit of time before I put up the Google Form, but if anyone is interested in buying any of the pictured kits, give it some thought.

I have some weird brain problems or something because model kits, Lego, anything with instructions to build something, it's always in a single sitting, regardless of how long it takes. Though tbf, the most intensive thing I build is usually something like Figure-Rise Amplified kits, which only takes a few hours. I'm also not very good at removing nubs, but I do try to cut, file, and remove them as well as I can.

Mg can vary, but anything using the 2.0 zaku as a base is pretty good. The rg are a bit bad about some loose parts and loose frames. The gg has the origin zakus which are great, but some dont lije the origin look. The revive zaku is nice but the wrists can be a hassle to deal with. The fz is kinda bad, bot terrible but dated. The f2 is pretty decent but lacks some articulation in the legs. Just go with what you like the look of.

Yes, Bandai Hobby (i.e. their Japanese factory) goes through their back catalogue and can reissue stuff as far back as the 80s. You used to be able to find out what was the old reissue from the now-private monthly schedules.

So, I've always painted my kits by individually spraying every piece and then assembling.

But I see a lot of people who will build the kit, and then prime the whole thing complete, or paint large chunks pre-assembled.

Anyone have opinions on the right order of operations, or what scenarios to go with one over the other?

there's really no correct answer since these methods depend on your use case. in my case, as much as i can, i pre-assemble some sections before painting, especially if it's a sub-assembly that calls for seamless work on the join lines like weapons. other modelers i know snapshits the whole thing, inspect for imperfections then mist primer on it to see which place to prioritize when painting, then they disassemble the whole thing and paint accordingly.

Unless they disassemble afterward, that's a really easy way to clog the joints with paint/primer and ensure that areas concealed by armor pieces due to the particular pose don't get painted at all. Me, I've snapped far too many pegs to trust in disassembling pieces after building them, so I prime and paint the pieces individually.

The real question is top-coating. That's also usually best done at the individual piece level for the same reasons as above, but you also need a proper airbrush for that. If you're top-coating from a spray can, your only option may be to coat at the limb level, since otherwise you may run out of spray can before you finish. Coat once, wait for it to dry, bend joints to expose un-topped areas, coat again.

Just finished my very first build!
My brother got me Gundam Aerial for my birthday. Of course I knew what Gundam was but I never watched an anime or bought any kit from them before that.
Took me two evenings to build and it was really fun. From my old Lego days I know building the kit is part of the experience, just listen to some stuff in the background and chill building it, it's pretty cool (and adds to modularity).
The only thing I didn't like was some parts that are a bit loose (if I add the beam to the rifle, it's so heavy that the arm holding it sags) and the use of stickers instead of prints. But those are honestly minor things. A thing that should've definitely been included is the stand which makes him float though, it would make for way more and dynamic poses (like the one on the cover), but I guess it would've increased price too.
But also

I absolutely love how it looks. At first the dimensions were a bit weird with the long, thick legs and skinny waist, small torso but it definitely grew on me very quick. A Youtube comment explained it as the Gundam being "female", because she is the daughter of her creator or something, and looking at it like that, the design makes sense.

Glad you enjoyed it. That kit is a HG (High Grade), which is basically the second-easiest level of construction. Literal children can build them, and they're perfect for beginners. If you want more detail and complexity, there are lines like 1/100 Full Mechanics, Master Grade and Real Grade, though obviously they cost more. A stand for posing is extra, you can buy one for $10 at Hobby Lobby, but they don't include them in most kits because as you said it would increase the price. Depending on how much you want to get into the hobby, you can even put more money into painting and modeling equipment.

People who want that could just buy a resin kit instead. It seems counter-productive to me to build an entire kit whose purpose is to be able to move and pose it, and then do something that prevents it from moving. I can understand seam welding, but cementing joints in place seems like it would be far too messy for little gain, if you don't want the joints to move just putty them.

Get yourself some sanding paper(s), very cheap and easy way to get rid of nubs

Yeah no one likes those. People usually paint those instead. Even if you don't plan on painting the entire kit (and you definitely don't have to), it's always nice having some paint around for those small details. You should also look into panel lining while you're at it, another cheap and easy way to vastly improve the look of your kit

A good first kit, I have a lot of friends who got into Gundam with WFM last year and a lot of them picked up Aerial and enjoyed it as their first kit. You're right about the stand though, Bandai has a tendency to never include stands with kits unless they absolutely cannot stand without one. Being the lead Gundam, they usually try to keep them inexpensive as well. They did release some weapon display kits specifically for WFM kits, if you buy from HLJ regularly they're like 3 bucks there, maybe 6 or 7 at a local hobbytown or domestic website, and action bases are about 10 domestically, maybe 4 or 5 bucks from hlj/japanese stores.

And yeah, the Gundam was designed to look a bit more effeminate being a female-led show.

I fucked up the forearm seamwelding because I whole ass forgot about it, but overall I was happy with these. I haven't really painted anything since, mostly been lazily straightbuilding or just panel line and topcoat. Soon I'll be making a Lfrith Pre-Production model, I found a guy on IG who's selling 3D printed backpack and rifle for it, so I just need to repaint my Lfrith and chop her bunny ears off. Should be another easy job and I'm hoping it'll give me motivation to get back into painting regularly.

I learned that one the hard way once years back. If the stickers are right next to each other, you have to stop and separate them before removing one from the sheet. My primary tool for sticker application is an old-ass small Swiss Army knife, but really any small thin sharp object works. Hold the adjacent sticker in place with your fingernail, remove the target sticker with the knife.

You do if you're trying to sand a large or curved surface. The sponge distributes the pressure to get even sanding.
You can also use a soft sanding block and regular sandpaper, but those usually are fairly large and you can't cut them to custom shapes.

I was advised to use lighter fluid as an enamel thinner when doing detailing over lacquer jobs. It and mineral spirits are supposed to be less abrasive than hobby-brand enamel thinners.

The main difference between a sheet sandpaper on a soft backing and a sanding sponge (a proper one) is that the abrasive on a sponge is glued to the sponge itself, not to the paper on top of it.
If you push your finger into a sponge you would get an indentation in the shape of your fingertip, while the sandpaper would just fold along some line (or break). What that means is that you can't sand a spherical shape (or any curve beyong simple bend) evenly with a sandpaper, soft backing or not.
If you'd ever sanded cars, you'd know that.

Conventional wisdom is that glass files are only useful if you're not going to paint your kits. They can file nubs down to flat with minimal risk of damage to the rest of the piece, but so can a razor blade, and you won't be able to see the imperfections through the paint anyhow.

I have a set of generic glass files (standard stripe pattern as opposed to polka dot) which I've used a few times. It's kinda nice to have but I paid $16 for the set on Amazon, and I don't know how it compares to a Raser.

Airbrush is pretty much the only way to go when it comes to painting Gunpla. They're so precisely engineered that anything more than the thinnest coat of primer and paint can screw with the joints.

The problem with your question is that it is absurdly broad. There are literally hundreds of 1/144 HG kits, released over the last 20+ years, almost all of which are good for airbrushing. I'm assuming that you're buying at Hobby Lobby though, which does narrow the options down somewhat. Depending on how many colors you have at your disposal (and assuming that you're using lacquers and not enamels or acrylics), the HGUC Leo is mostly a single color and relatively easy to paint. But honestly, it's hard to go wrong with any of the HGUC kits, you just have to be careful not to paint the joint areas.

Completely different anon here. Here's a picture of a nub I filed when using my glass file set for the first time. That area below the nub was "damaged" by the file in that it's a part of the piece that I did not intend to file. However, it's polish smooth (as in, shiny when you put it under a light), and running my finger over the entire surface I did not feel any roughness at all. After I prime the piece I'm almost certain that I won't even be able to tell that it was "damaged" by the glass file, less so after a coat of paint.

I managed to snatch 2 Ingram MGs for cheap, treating this first one as a test/disposable run since it's a bit of a tricky build. Also using a glass file for the.
Struggling to see a reason why I would fully paint this guy though. It's basically all white and it looks decent enough. Gonna topcoat it half matte half glossy and see which one I like better and call it a day

I might get some godhands for christmas, if not I'll buy a pair after the holidays. But I've been researching them, and I've been getting conflicting answers on maintaining them. Sewing machine oil. 3 in 1. Fancy official anti-rust godhand branded oil. now paraffin. I'm certain this is asked here a ton, but what should I use?
Some of the lacquer thinner talk earlier in the thread reminded me that I use the home depot lacquer thinner to clean my airbrush. I have a fan blowing outdoors in my spraybooth and I always wear the guide's recommended mask that I keep in a ziploc and tupperware between use. But this isn't some really stupid thing I'm doing, right? I worry a lot about these things.

WD-40 would work in a pinch, but something like rem oil, sewing machine oil or boeshield T9 would work a bit better. WD-40 is mostly solvents, which is good for removing moisture but it only applies a very small amount of lubricant.

I've owned various hobby nippers and pliers for about 10 years. I have never applied any oil to any of them (I did wipe off the oil they came with) and none of them show any signs of rust. But it's faily dry (35-50% humidity) indoors, nothing really rusts.

I just did a really shitty test on some spare runners to see if I could actually airbrush that shitty bottle of Testors enamel I had sitting in a box for like twelve years. The suggestion was to thin it 1:1 or more with hardware store lacquer thinner, so I was kind of leery of whether or not it would melt the plastic, but apparently it doesn't, which is nice. Next step is to test out decanting the spray can primer into a bottle I can then transfer to the airbrush. Probably a waste of time and effort since I'm just trying to get rid of the spray can and don't intend to use it for anything other than testing/practice, but the can of gray primer came out kind of runny so I might have to do it with that.

Small follow-up to this, it's still a very rough idea but the trees and terrain will be getting a lot of work done on them. I plan on making forest diorama with the MG Dynames crouched and lining up a shot, what are your guys opinion on the scale and look of the trees? Gunpla isn't really designed to be played with, you're supposed to pose them occasionally and be gentle while doing so. Transforming kits tend to be a lot more fragile when it comes to this as well. If you want to play with it, an action figure is a better purchase.

All that being said, if you don't want to feel like you wasted money on a kit because something broke while posing, you could go for an HG instead, since those are quite cheap. Invest in some painting supplies and detail it up as much as you like.

Yea at that point might as well buy a figure, even the most sturdy models will break fairly easy. I have found the HG Aerial is pretty good at staying together after messing with it while finding a good pose. If you Glue the bastard ( applys to most kits) you can probably finger-fuck it a bunch without it totally implodeing in your hand

I've been using lacquer thinner, the kind you get at home depot, to clean my airbrush. I have been keeping it in a mason jar. It melted the foam on the lid right away, but I thought it was fine enough since it wouldn't leak, but it smells even with the lid on I just noticed. Is there a better bottle or lid I should use? Or am I stupid for using lacquer thinner in the first place? I did learn to clean my airbrush from a youtuber.

Hardware store lacquer thinner is perfectly fine for cleaning your airbrush, so long as you don't have some shitty-ass cheap one. Its only real problem is that undiluted it melts plastic, so don't let it get on your kits raw. This >>10791307 was done with roughly 1:1 Testors white gloss cut with Klean Strip lacquer thinner, in both cases it didn't melt the runner so I'm satisfied enough.

Been keeping my hardware store lacquer thinner in pic related for 10+ years now, never melted and it's convenient to pour out of.
The thinner doesn't seem to evaporate from it (I continuously use it so it's hard to keep track of any miniscule leaks) and it doesn't smell although I keep it in a steel can between uses just in case.

I use dspiae dropper bottles I bought off aliepxress for 40 cents each and store hardware store lacquer thinner in them. They got a little discolored, part of the clear turned an opaque white, but its been months now and no leaks, cracks, smells or anything

Just a few nice brushes, probably an acrylic paint of your choice, and some water. Pull out some paint from the jar./tube, then mix in water until it's about the consistency of milk. You'll want to paint thin, smooth layers onto the kit, allowing for drying in between. Do not try to get full coverage all at once. Handpainting is not necessarily difficult, but it requires patience.

Also, airbrushing is not necessarily out of the question. You can get a small handheld battery powered airbrush, and use it on your porch or balcony or outside your apartment building while wearing a respirator for the fumes. This will not be a quality airbrush by any means, but for simple tasks and single color fills it can work acceptably enough.

1. Thin your paints. This applies to all forms of model painting, whether it be Gunpla or military models or tabletop miniatures.

2. Do two coats, at perpendicular angles to each other. For instance, if you painted left-right on your first coat, then paint up-down on your second coat. Even if both coats were uniform, this helps the finish to look a lot better and reduce the possibility of brush strokes showing up in the finished product.

3. Top coat to finish the job. A spray can of top coat will probably work best for this, Hobby Lobby sells them but you should be able to get them at mom and pop shops as well. Quick-and-dirty, spray at the limb stage, bending the joints between coats to catch areas that were covered between each one. If you're the guy with the PG Unicorn, that's probably not going to work though, you might have to spray each piece individually and use up multiple cans (though the plus side is unless you really go to town with the spray, it likely won't fuck with the tolerances between moving pieces, but that's what masking tape is for).

Ideally, yeah. But if you're lazy or poor like me, you can fudge some of this stuff. Barebones route is just acrylic paint, thin with tap water, oneshot your panel lining and decals, then flat coat.

Panel lining should be after the painting stage. Some people do a gloss coat after paint, then panel lining and dry decals, followed by the final top coat. Problem with gloss coats is that they tend to accentuate any imperfections, so you absolutely want to make sure that the surface is smooth before applying it. Waterslides do poorly under gloss coats, even if you use decal softener, so be very wary of those.

If you do gloss and then flat it should give you a semi-gloss sort of look on your kit. Gloss and flat work against each other so your choice of combination can change how the final finish looks.

It's a coat that you put onto the plastic before painting. Primer's purpose is to help fill in chips and scratches in the plastic, creating a smooth surface that the paint can bond to more easily. For Gunpla, it can be especially important if you're doing custom paint jobs and/or color correction since the primer will affect the shade of paint put on top of it (e.g. if you paint blue over a black piece, it'll appear differently than if you paint blue over a white piece, so for uniformity you prime both pieces the same color so that the blue will appear to be the same shade).

Only after 1 or 2 coats if your paint pigment density is particularly low. After 2-3 coats primer color makes 0 difference. Primer makes sense for adhesion and fixing surface imperfections but for color modulation it is a meme. In fact, if your color is affected by the color of the primer underneath it means you have not applied enough paint and you are not getting the actual color you expect.

One exception: black/brown primer for when you expect spotty coverage in hard to reach areas, in which case dark spots from bad color coverage would look like natural shadows.

So this is the power of non Japanese paints. My gaianotes completely cover it 1-3 thin layers, depending on the color. The only ones that don't are transparent paints themselves, metallics, clear colors, pearls. With their normal paints the base coat doesn't matter at all if you completely cover it.

Im with you brother. As long as you have the slide and the spot you want it nice and wet you can legit just float the decal to where you want it, wring out the water with a q-tip, put some setter and your good to go

If you want real budget the rustoleum painters touch 2x is actually pretty good. Ive used it a few times before I bought an airbrush and it was pretty smooth for the price. Otherwise you can't go wrong with the tamiya or mr hobby ones
