I mostly model British rolling stock both because I grew up with Thomas and I just think Britain has some of the most iconic and easy to remember locomotives. British models also tend to be a fair bit cheeper compared to their American counterparts, especially on the secondary market

US from the end of the second world war through to the end of Conrail. Lionel's bread and butter for 50 years.
One of the coolest things about modeling that era is the amount of roadnames and models available second hand from all the 3 rail manufacturers.

its a dc locomotive on dc track and its with a mrc power pack. i looked more into it and apparently it has something to do with "Automatic PWM" or "PWM". apparently my older power pack was "pure filtered dc" and thats why it wasnt making this annoying motor noise.

yeah thats what i thought too. i dont know anything about electronics and what not but it feels like it was getting hit with a lot of power just so it can perform slightly better at low speeds.

The popularization of TV in the '50s had everyone asking, "Is the model train hobby dying? Kids just want to spend all day in front of a screen instead of doing cool things!" So in 1960 Walthers became a distributor to hedge its bets (in addition to still selling their own stuff). The hobby recovered but they kept selling other people's stuff. Except Athearn's. I think the PMW is a mode that pulses the power at low settings to allow cheap locomotives to creep at low speeds. With the PMW on, it will pulse between high and low wattage to "trick" a loco that normally has bad low speed performance into running well slowly. As far as I know, they've stopped making power supplies with this feature.

I tried double heading two lionchief engines today. The Pennsy 0-8-0 and the Polar Express berkshire.
Even when I thought I had the speeds matched, they were still significantly slower than they ran on their own. Maybe it would be easier if I emulated the Lionchief app or something, so I could get more accurate speed adjustments between them.

Absolutely. DC is DC.
I've mixed and matched all sorts of stuff by taking the 2 lead wire with the plastic plug connector for the rerailer, and stripping the other end to hook up to whatever.

To any n-scalers out there, what is the oldest engine you have experience performing coupler conversions on? I'm looking at an Alco S2 made by Arnold in the very early 90's, and wondering if Micro-trains makes a coupler conversion for it, or if I'm just stuck with the singe-piece couplers it comes with. Could be a power supply issue. The wall wart the Lionchief sets come with are pretty much just enough for the equipment the set they come with. Lionchief will run on a conventional AC transformer. Maybe try one of the bigger ones like an MTH Z1000 or Li9nel GW180. It could also be because the two locomotives are geared differently.

My layout is actually powered by a Z-1000 set to full power. And uncoupled they get decent running speeds alongside each other on parallel tracks.
It absolutely is the gearing, the drivers are a different size and the engines were made like 4 years apart. I just figured I could compensate by running the PE a hair slower so the scale speed worked out the same.

Ah. With Lionchief, the best way to double head is to get two of the same engine and run them off the same remote. Won't work with Lionchief Plus, but with standard Lionchief, two engines of the same type and cab number will happily slave to the same remote.

This was a family members.
He got it new from sears somewhere around 1957.
I'm guessing S scale (my HO in the background).
3 rail track.
Complete set (no original packaging).
I haven't unpacked everything yet because I want time to catalog and really check condition of every component.
Looks like engine and another half a dozen various cars.
Engine has smoke feature.
I don't see a brand anywhere on the engine.

There seems to be a fair amount of info on it.
My set has been stored for many decades and was 100% operational when packed away.
I'm still hesitant to plug in the transformer.

Those old Marx trains are tough. I bet with a good cleaning and some grease, and cleaning the track and that train will run. I dont know too much about Marx, but theres alot of info out on them and it shouldnt be too hard to get working. Just check the transformer wire that you plug into the wall ot make sure its not nicked or anything

From what I was told and by looking at the components I think all it will take to get it to run is to plug it in.
Not an expensive set, they seem to be all over ebay but important to me considering how long it's been in the family.

And on a side not-
WTF is up with train prices?
I just run a train at Christmas but I've added track over the years to make goofy complicated sets (instead of just going around the tree- one year I went through 3 rooms and 2 hallways) but I've been content with my small collection of engines and cars.
I was looking at adding some this year and I paid less for my Ford ranger than they want for the sets I'm finding....

Are crane tenders prototypical?
I feel like all the models for railroad cranes are the same model in different liveries, which is fine, but I can't imagine all the railroads in the US have the same exact specs for their cranes.
For that matter, are they anachronistic like cabooses are, being replaced by cranes not on rails?

Yes and no. If you do an image search for "MOW crane" you'll see a number of styles, including types like in your pic which definitely skews towards an older style. More modern ones will look different. For some lines in the proper period, that would be correct. But there may be liveries of it that did not exist, it being much cheaper to just re-use the same model for equipment generally in lower demand. Like anything else, if you are very particular about matching a prototype then you must first research your prototype and time period to figure it out. The prototype may use different equipment, sometimes even bodge jobs they made themselves. Or similar equipment to that, even basically the same, but with modifications. But if you're just looking for close enough that you can get away with it, few people would notice it out of place if you had a CP pac-man era layout and dropped that MOW tender into it even if it never really existed (pic related does show something similar).

I do both HO and O gauge and even HO stuff is kind of expensive. I like Menards O gauge cars, I havent checkes out their engines yet but im planning on it eventually. Theres lots of ways to find cheaper trains, you just gotta look!

The local historical/excursion train company bought this one and it looks about the same except for the tender car. A lot of these were converted from steam to diesel, so the tender for this one (converted from a gondola rather than a flatcar) just has a generator at the end instead of a house for the steam generator. A lot of railroads keep one here and there just in case, but they've mostly been replaced by subcontracted hi-rail wheeled cranes. You only see them used when the MOW yard has better access to a wreck than the highways.

If you run a steam-powered model, it'd be prototypical to couple it to a water tender. And steam or not, throw an extra five cars onto the train for braking capability because these things were heavy. Not sure if they had to be between the crane and the locomotive.

I find the vast majority of stuff you find in the bargain box at shows, especially O-27 stuff just needs minor fixes and cleanup to get working again. Most just don't bother because they are 0-27 toys and not the "Real scale" models.

Marx 666. Damned near indestructible. Marketing was "smokes like the Devil." It's three rail O gauge and will run on standard three rail O track, including the modern stuff. Power supply was AC, but it has an an open frame universal motor and will run on DC if there's enough wattage. Since it has a AC motor, it has a mechanical reversing unit. Every time power is cut, a solenoid flips a switch from forward to reverse or reverse to forward. It will always start in the opposite direction of what you were running. There are plenty of videos on how to service these things, just look up Marx 666 service or maintenance. As a quick start, a drop of oil on the gears and motor armature shaft is a good start. Most them have a very good smoke unit. Standard commercial smoke fluid will work fine in these.

My guess is they feel they are leaving money on the table. They've been doing this since the 1960's. They know HO is the most popular scale, but they're also throwing everything into their O guagge lines. The end result is a couple of new toolings lime their Polar Express based Berkshire that they reliveried multiple times and a heavy reliance on old tooling like former Model Power and Mantua/Tyco. The odd thing is they won't put out any really inexpensive starter sets and also won't commit to new high quality tooling. So they just kind of let their HO line coast along until the Lionel name stops selling their mediocre offerings and the shelve the who thing for another decade or two.

Huh. Funny enough, I mostly wanted the model for the box, rather than for the engine itself, but the writeup you gave me makes it look not too shabby for an early-90's model, and based on at least one provided picture it can be converted to Micro-Trains couplers. What kit do you have that lists them? It is just the generic coupler kit, or do you have one of their model-specific kits?

Normally an N Scale fag, but the Christmas Season and nostalgia for TM Books videos makes me want to get some old Postwar Lionel stuff and do a proper Christmas Train setup next year. Which of these trains should I try tracking down?

Yeah I just want to do a temporary setup around December next year with like a dogbone of track and nothing too fancy (Maybe a passing siding at most to fit extra cars) so I don't need any of the fancy new Bluetooth systems.

I think a lot of rails are nickel silver now?? Bachmann sells both steel and silver EZ track and I’m pretty sure the Kato track is silver. Not sure about other gauges.

What's up with DCS parts now? Is it all just new-old stock and bad inventory pages?
You can only get TIUs second hand, and all the sites that have "new" listings are in pre-order mode with dates in the past.
I know MTH went through some shit, but they're still in some kind of business and every hobby shop will happily sell you a DCS + Conventional engine anyway.

Silver is soft and scratches ridiculously easily. I'm not even sure I'd trust it to hold its shape after years of little train wheels pushing sideways on it in the curves. It also tarnishes and needs to be polished. And it's expensive.

We're not that desperate for conductivity.

Being a train autist today, but far less of a Lego autist than I was in my youth, I'd suggest going for either the UK style (B) or USRA (C).
USRA is probably more likely to have marketability and appeal, while UK saddletanks would attract the Thomas autists in addition to the train autists. If you're referring to the one I think you are, that's a battery operated plastic shittrain.
I'll rag on Lionel all day long, but plastic battery trains are just ways to swindle clueless or cheap parents and 3 year olds, no matter the brand.
This is $120 right now, and it's going to be useful exactly once. But the actual O set is like $400, never mind the cost to make a real G scale one, and so people who don't understand why model trains are expensive get shit. I blame the consumer.

I've been doing HO for like 30 years and the few people I've known irl that had trains also had HO- with the exception of vintage or one-off sets- but any actual collections were HO.
Is it just sone regional thing that HO is the main choice in my world and other places another scale is "the norm"?

Lionel has owned the exclusive rights to Polar Express train merch since the movie came out, and they're primarily a O scale company first with a minor focus in G and only very recently got back into HO (And by get back into HO I mean recycling old Mantua and Model Power molds), so their priority is pumping out O scale stuff first and foremost. They have an HO scale Polar Express set but I can't speak for the quality of it since I do N scale stuff myself

I can appreciate the quality printing for that price, but the gold trucks are pretty flat and gaudy. For the sake of of the model, let's pretend that's the best engine ever, and leave the /pol/ shit in pol. That gold paint should shine like the it came out of the National Mint for $950 and it doesn't.
But related, O is cool because you can buy cars for either side for multiple elections. I look at it like like collecting campaign buttons.

Train set level stuff sold to grandparents on a subscription model with the notion it’ll be worth something some day. 9/10 times they’re work jack shit and hobby shops can’t get rid of them. They used to at least be good for On30 kitbash fodder (same toolings as Bachmann) but they stopped using those toolings.

Bradford Exchange stuff is great if you want to get into On30 and don't mind repainting the equipment. You can usually find random stuff on eBay. Be sure to avoid the 4-6-0 locomotive of newer sets. It's shit. If you can get the 2-6-0, it's the same basic Cooke Locomotive Works Mogul Bachmann has been building since the 1990's and is a decent little steam locomotive.

Marx track is compatible with Lionel O27. They made standard O27 track and switches and wide radius O34 track and switches that were sold with premium sets. This wide radius track is easy to spot as it has five ties per section.

I just finished my first McKean models kit. I didnt use the trucks that came with it. I wasnt fucking around trying to assemble them. I just got some Athearn bettendorf trucks with metal wheels and tapped the bolsters for a 2-56 machine screw to hold them in. Next time I get a McKean kit I will also be cutting off the coupler pocket and screwing in an Athearn coupler pocket because the McKean style has you glue a cover over the pocket. Other than that, its a very nice model and I enjoy it.

Side note, does anyone have a good quality picture of the V&O Appalachian Lines logo? I want to get a hat made with the V&O logo but I cant find a picture of just the logo

Just won an auction for a Turbine (It's a Williams reproduction but I got it for $150 shipped so fuck it), went with it since all the other choices have readily available options in N scale but there's no N scale S2 Turbine even in Brass. Looking around for coaches now (I want proper Lionel Lines ones instead of William's legally distinct "Luxury Lines" ones) and I'm not sure if it's an Ebay thing or a Postwar Lionel thing but 2400 series coaches in the green with yellow stripes are pricy as heck, like $80-90 per coach. Almost making me want to track down their cheaper silver cousins instead.
