As awful as they tasted, the labs were fun. You got to setup some cool looking labs & make stuff from powdered sugar. The stuff looked gross, but that was the fun of it. I never forgot those 2 Doctor Dreadful labs from childhood. Thanks Dad!

All the edible candy, Dr Dreadful type toys always tasted like shit. The appeal was the 90's gross out look of the things, and the process of 'creating' the candy anyway. There were similar Harry Potter themed sets in the early 2000s too and the candy was equally as terrible. One had the basilisk and you'd create gummies, another was a spider that you'd create webs or something, and a third was where you'd create liquid potions.

My experience was much the same. Most of the enjoyment I got from these sets was other kids and friends coming over, getting excited I had them, then us setting it all up and making the stuff together. Then having them also experience the bad tasting stuff it produced.
After the mixes ran out the sets were used as Halloween decor, pretending to be a mad scientist, props in some video projects in school, then finally donated.
Sort of wish I had kept them for halloween decor.

Never bothered with it. I had the MAD scientist sets in the 80s that let you put monster skin on a skeleton and melt it off.

I also had the dissect an alien set.

I had rocks that grow in water. And a creepie crawly maker. And that McDonald's thing that let you make Fry's from bread.

IIRC there was some zombie head-themed set like Doctor Dreadful, but a different brand. I vaguely remember the head housing some kind of candy treat you made and I think it had gummy worms you could pick out too. I begged for it for Xmas one year and never got it. Looking back, I realize it would have been more of the same like this. Cool visually, cool 90s style packaging, but nasty tasting candy that would be made once or twice and then it would sit in the closet never to be touched again

You... do realize those weren't edible, right?

Well, yeah - liquid latex does tend to become chewy when it sets.
