Well, the original was a purchase i regretted, that I bought just because i had remaining christmas money, and selection at the store was suboptimal.
the new one... didn't really improve much, and managed to make the paws unevenly-sized (a habit we've seen a lot of lately). they changed things, but not in a way that makes him look like more of a tasmanian devil. and we get yet another smallened beast mode head... I dunno, I'm not wowed. I'll get him on discount.

It's not actually facing outwards, its just not enclosed. The piece only slides off the mushroom one direction, it doesn't go the other way despite looking like it could.

I like basically everything about Lio Convoy except that damn head, which 3P's still refuse to make a replacement for. It's not even just the face, the mane looks greasy and gross to me, I dunno.
Didn't have Tigatron, but he definitely looked nicer than Cheetor. I'll probably wait for him to get yet another rerelease though, the yellow on his original release's coat looked really poor, and I had the Takara 2pack preordered, before I realized just how unexcited I really was, sadly. Design-wise, Tgatron definitely has one of my favorite faces in the show, though, so yeah hopefully I'll get my hands on him seperately for cheap some time later.

Just yeah, I dunno. Most Beast Wars figs since Kingdom have always come across as kinda middling to me? Like they're decent but either don't do enough to wow me, or have something that breaks the whole deal for me (usually the too-realistic beast modes).

yeah I hear you, you have to get what's exciting. and there ARE those little complaints. lio's lion face isn't perfect and his hind legs sure aren't, and tigatron's initial coat was so miscolored.
I guess my standards are low since all I have to compare them to is the classic era and a couple Generations figures (which are better than current ones, true. but part of that is that waspinator and rhinox both kinda got hit hard with problems. Generations and Kingdom Rattrap are both good, though one is too big and the other too small...)

i don't think they were given a choice. they were told 'put this toy in' and then they polished the hell out of those turds. Though some, like tarantulas and primal, needed very little changing.

You should ask anon, you might be pleasantly surprised what you find out?
My own sister mentioned a few weeks back that she remembers Cheetor being her favourite from when we played Transformers together so I now keen to see if I can find it.
Scarce few toys survived my parents divorce, so anything I can find is welcomed back to my collection with open arms.

My sister remembers more about Beast Wars than my older brother - it actually came up randomly in discussion during Christmas when my younger brother randomly compared me to Megatron (don't ask).
Then again, the four of us used to sneak out of our rooms early in the morning to watch the show together while my parents slept in, and we all owned the toys - my sister had both versions of Airazor and Blackarachnia, so she was just as into it as we were.

Has anyone here been able to get this damn pin out of Bombshell/Shrapnel's arm? Tried heating it with a soldering iron and it still won't budge. I just want to swap the damn biceps so Bombshell has the correct color arms, then I should be able to dye his original grey biceps and hands purple and make Shrapnel correct.

It's stupid I have to do this in the first place, and whoever at Hasbro is making these color choices deserves to be fired. Shrapnel is especially a mess.

>head and upper torso should be black, are purple plastic with the head and only the front of the torso painted black (glossy at that, so doesn't match the black plastic parts)
>biceps and hands should be purple, are black plastic
>hips should be grey, are purple plastic painted grey, don't match grey plastic thighs
>gun is purple plastic painted silver

Was it so damn hard to arrange these parts in a way that things are molded in the correct fucking colors?

Yes it's the colors, I like his head. The arms going from black to grey to black to grey is fucking sloppy. Also grey pelvis, black hips, grey thighs. Fucking amateur hour design breakjng up the colors like that. Whether you care about toon accuracy or not pic related looks significantly better.

Disappointing, he reuses 75% of Skrapnell parts and has an odd deco, the whole legacy insecticon trio is like that, they aren't bad toys, but they could've been much better.

At mine I found buzzworthy Kup, the usual legacy nightprowler, sandstorm and buzzsaw and surprisingly skullgrin was there. The ones my friend goes to up north is usually the same but with the occasional velocitron deluxe.

I always get the feeling that it's the same person who posts this exact line of thinking.
It's more that BW got notably better in toy engineering in the 97 waves+ them picking the first releases in a wave. The 96 waves took most of the budget. Insecticon and Wolfang nearly made the cut, but budget issues prevented that. Terrorsaur beats out Snapper and Iguanus because as a "dinosaur" and a flyer he has more niches.
Losing Polar Claw was a bit of a miss but the show almost never used snowy enviroments and the model rework that is Tigatron took most of those scenes up. Rattrap over Razorbeast or Armordillo is odd but the rat angle is fun.
For the 97 Maximals, Airrazor got the lucky combo of being a flyer and her bio not having a set gender yet which helped get her a spot. Inferno was one of the BW lead designer's favorite designs(seriously look at the Botcon 96 hasbro panel, the guy keeps mentioning "the fire ant" as his most anticipated release for the next year).
As for the fuzor first wave, Quickstrike was better than AirHammer+ could use Scorponok's beast mode rig probably. Just like Silverbolt is suspected as using the Wolfang model they never finished.
For the rest of the transmetals, Rhinox and Inferno were doing less by season 2. Waspinator was close to being killed off by Hasbro orders before he was saved, so they weren't going to get the budget to Transmetalize him. Terrorsaur was the trade-in for Waspinator so they weren't planning on using him unless they ponied up the budget to take him out of the lava. and rampage/Depth Charge were the big figures in the line.
With the TM2s the show ones are all based on existing characters.

what's weird to me is how there were no transmetal 1 toys of non-show-characters, even though those forms themselves were not used in the show, and obviously weren't going to be. But also, nobody who got a toyline-only TM1 form got a TM2 form either show or toy, so.. there's no like "oh we skipped over that one"

It's long been my suspicion that the Transmetal line basically existed as a show-tie in to get the characters from 96/early 97 adapted in the show back on shelves. While making Rhinox/Terrorsaur/Airrazor/Inferno were likely never even planned in the show to turn, whent he toys were being hashed out they probably decided to focus on the show characters.
It also reflects how the Mcdonalds TMs were the remaining show characters(except Tigatron, who could've been a Cheetor redeco). fuzors was the line for new stuff.

If they had their proper alt modes and came with GI Joe versions of the human Transformers characters I'd be all over them, but as they are they have no appeal to me. Even if they're a bit hollow and cheap, large scale Transformers able to seat 3.75" figures are grail tier for me, but I want a 3.75" Bumblebee to Transform into a yellow Volkswagen Beetle (or close enough unlicensed approximation), not a green GI Joe jeep. Yeah, but the reason limbs into limbs is used so much is because you've already got all the joints for one mode in the other. After that you start increasing parts count to get the limbs joints they need, or you have limbs that don't have joints in them.

why do these all look like complete trash? I was into transformers as a kid but it seems like articulation is the only thing improved after all these years. The designs are still trash that just plops limbs out of boxes and puts hoods on the back, the quality standards have gotten worse, and they seemingly are terrified of making a design more interesting than whitebread. And this goes for the third party stuff too, they're all just accordioned limbs and rehashes of existing things. Awful.

Because, instead of going with new and interesting ideas, everything's just a rehash of the same G1 designs over and over again, with transformations compromised to ensure they look as close to the shitty old error-filled 80's cartoon as possible, regardless of how badly the resulting toy ends up. Hasbro knows the old fans will keep buying up the millions of versions of Bumblebee and Optimus Prime they churn out no matter how often they do it, so it's easy money they can depend on rather than trying something risky with new designs.

It's literally inside the drill, along with his head, hence why the drill is hollow - the black tip of the drill is his dragon horn, which is swept forward. The head stows inside the drill for robot mode, too.

You don't need a comic line to justify Scorpinok or Powermaster Optimus Prime. And most the comic extra guys that made up Squadron X seem easy enough to just release through usual things like retailer exclusives since they won't make new molds likely, just recolors with new heads.

It's been a while, but I'm pretty sure they shrank (very slightly) on the actual show; whatever the case, they definitely look more pauldron-y than they do on the actual toy.

I could see a smaller vehicle meant to be relatively lighter, like a dune buggy. The Runner from Borderlands is a good example. I know it's reminiscent of the "H-Tank" shape where the 4 wheels obviously become the limbs but it does make the vehicle mode look more animalistic. All things considered, 96 Primal and Megatron have enough gimmicks and size to be about $40-50. Simpler than modern Leaders but way chunkier.

Yep. over the game's run they added a chunk of the BW show cast in it plus the 3 combiner teams. all got a more robot retheming. some would basically be the same mold as the kingdom/legacy but retextured, but there'd be some cool designs to get a figure like pic related.

That's just the 10th anniversary Megatron, so we already got him (and a few repaints of him) years ago. A better example to post would've been either version of Dinobot, since both his normal and Transmetal 2 version in the game are using entirely made-up designs that use whole new transformation schemes.

Actually you do. Comic Scorponok needs to be Leader sized to go with Powermaster Optimus.

Got that Mutant Tigatron coming. I'm glad that Hasbro remembered the "mutant masks" gimmicks of Beast Wars.

Have they utilized this alt head style on anything other than the Cheetor, Tigatron and Waspinator molds? I'd love an Optimus or Megatron in alt colors using the "mutant" heads. If I recall didn't Dinobot also have this?

You already have those. Also the Titans Returns heads for Nightbeat and Siren already are the toy-based ones, so if they made full-sized bodies they would be comic-based looking at the double-dipping heads.

No, BW Grimlock was a regular release that used Dinobot's standard mold - the one you're thinking of from the Beast Machines line was Rapticon, who used the Dinobot 2 mold.
Either way, the head they replicated was the original toy version of the Dinobot head (which was used on the new Grimlock as well as the Buzzworthy Toy Colors Dinobot), rather than the cartoon head used in the original release.

Hasbro's gotten so many characters done in recent years, it's hard to think of anybody who hasn't gotten their turn. Actually, the tail is a missile launcher, and it's detachable - until the Kingdom toy, this was the only version of BW Megatron that had an actual hand under his tail. Like his other arm, however, it's a little on the stumpy side, plus it's actually a three-fingered claw instead of the humanoid hand he had on the show, but he can hold things with it.

Just a generic name for a fancy business - both of those gold pieces on the back of his shield become 'skyscrapers' in base mode, so the stickers add names to the tops of the 'buildings' to pass them off a bit better, along with making the 'windows' on the sides a bit more defined and easier to see.

I'd also be happy with them all having EVO-FUUUUUSION to become armor or weapons or whatever for the other junkions. I like how much crap Scraphook has since it contributes to the "made of scrap metal" theme and having the dogs become more scrap metal to repurpose into weapons/armor would be perfect.

I feel like Metroplex should be on the shortlist of titans to redo, since he's a double whammy of being 10 years old and also not particularly accurate to his original G1 design. And they haven't shied away from doing selects repaints of titans these past few years, Metrotitan would really be no different than Black Zarak in that regard.

Plus Metrotank and Metroshot would be easy companion selects pieces and obligatory purchases to complete the set.

I swear to god this thread is full of people who cannot let go of the past. No, it's not. I guess if you're going for "top transformers that you can press a button and make the butt go zoom" yeah that'd be a win, but overall, no. Show accurate - no. Dynamic poseability - no. Size advantage - no. Cool weapon - no.

Only thing it has over this one is literally transformation accuracy and ability to be a toy from the 90s. For the record, Inferno was my favorite figure as a kid. Could Legacy have been better? Absolutely. Probably if they ditched whatever aesthetic they were going for with ant mode.

Truthfully I wish there was an upgrade kit that let us do something different with some of the legs so they could get out of the way. I think the forearm ones and the back ones with the ball joints could be replaced. But even then, I still think it's a stretch to say that the original is better.

Dude, nobody said the old toy was perfect - it most certainly had its flaws. The thing is, the new one has MORE flaws, and unlike the 90's toy, no excuse for it. You point out that the old toy wasn't show accurate, but are ignoring that the new one is even LESS accurate. People have posted comparisons - the only thing accurate on the new version is the head, and everything from the neck down is completely wrong. Wrong arms and legs, wrong wrists, immovable ant legs jutting out in places they shouldn't be, plus you've lost Inferno's unique chest details because the ant head is now too bulbous; I'm not even going to bother discussing the 'ant' mode which neither looks like the show model nor any other species of known ant on the planet.
I'm not sure why you keep bringing up the old toy's spinning thruster gimmick - literally nobody here has said they wanted it back. The issue is that the new toy uses the thruster as a gun now, meaning he can't do the thing he was known for doing on the show (attacking from the air), plus the thruster can no longer stow out of sight in his abdomen in beast mode, leaving it awkwardly slapped to his back in plain view.
I get that you're a fan of the new toy, but the complaints about it are totally valid, even if you don't like hearing it.

I like his weapons, but I like what the show gave him even better.
but there are some other issues, the leg missiles suck as projectiles, in robot mode, and in beast mode.. and while I like the clear-plastic-over-metallic look (very anty), it's inconsistent, most areas are merely clear, no metallic paint on the inside. and if I do paint him up to be more show-accurate, now all that metallic blue will show in beast mode. i get why the show wanted to break all that red up more, but.. they could have done it with metallic red or black or something.

vehicle-mounted guns make a lot of sense, and vehicles and robots both have very separate kind of skills and useful situations. Terrestrial animals are harder to make useful and distinct enough from humanoids, so they worked in the energon protection aspect, then the semi-vehicle-mode aspects

but he's finally done. I was really hoping for a deeper sport-car kinda metallic red, but this 'christmas ornament' clear-red-over-silver looks fine.
I probably should have made the bronze parts beige instead

It's the lighting mainly, using flash up close like that is like sticking your eye in a flashlight, it doesn't make for nice pictures
Try some overhead light instead, even just a good lamp will do well

reminds me of when I was finishing college, and photographing my zoids before putting them into storage for what would end up being 16 of the next 19 years off and on. On the tiny little screen of the digital camera I'd just gotten for christmas, the flash images looked too washed out, but put on a real computer, the non-flash ones even in full bathroom lighting looked way too dark. this shit is hard.

Been watching some reviews and the GE Starscream honestly looks surprisingly good, if not for the cockpit. Apparently the reason it's so large is because of needing to fit either his wide-ass head or his nosecon inside during either transformation, and the reason they didn't paint it to look smaller/more accurate because it's a super flexible plastic; sinceit's a large thin transparent piece, it would've broken easily had it been more a rigid plastic, and if they painted it as it is now, the flexability would've made it flake off.
Hrmm. Nevertheless, have any of you guys seen anybody attempt painting the cockpit? If not that, then I can imagine stickers/toyhax or something would be a perfect fix. What do you guys think?

The g2 troopers were my #1 most wanted obscure character, I was very satisfied with their inclusion. With that, I just want animated megatron and lugnut. As long as they keep their vaguely accurate sizes, then I think the animated decepticons would be very easy to do right compared to the autobots. A large g1 styled megatron that turns into an attack helicopter just sounds awesome.

Some people swear by earthrise but I agree that 86 is truly the first G1 style ironhide/rathet mode that I found to be good. I even vastly prefer the inaccurate stockier proportions to how dumpy and weird they're supposed to be.
It's just... a real shame about that color matching and clear plastic. It drags the look down so much. 86 really should've gone for opaque cell-shaded windows, it'd fit the theme so much better.

I was like this before I realized that every checklist purchase I've made was underwhelming and soon a dust-collector. Unless it's a mediocre figure of a favourite, I'd be very cautious the next time I go "figure's ok but I need the character".

NTA, but I liked Terrorsaur - as someone who didn't grow up with G1, he was my first exposure to a Starscream-esque backstabbing bastard kind of character (barring Stars team's actual cameo in that one episode), and while Tarantulas ultimately did it better, I still enjoyed it. I was actually pretty pissed when they killed him off but spared Waspinator, especially since it meant we never got his cool Transmetal design.

They specifically said no to Transmetals - it was a surprise that we even got TM2 Megatron at all, since he was revealed shortly after the announcement. I wouldn't hold my breath for Depthcharge or Rampage, especially since the two most highly demanded Transmetal designs - Megatron and Tarantulas' season 2 forms - were outright rejected.

None of them were that enthusing, although the toy-only ones were fun. Greener grass, huh?
Tarantulas was nice but just because it was good for the character, other than him and Depth Charge, not much until TM2 guys.
Does Tigerhawk look okay? Uncertain whether he's a must-get, since I have my favourite Tigatron and his buddy, although leader-class seems very pricy

My Mutant Tigatron just arrived, hes pretty awesome and fhe engineering, while very similar to Nightprowler, is just different enough to keep me from feeling like I bought the same toy.

Whats odd is the Gut Gun. I'm very very glad its included, but its clearly an afterthought of some sort. They could have so easily made it mount on his inderside with the barrel either retracted or going into the chest cavity. Idk, something other than nothing.

proportions are ridiculous. the original wasn't perfect, but this is worse. crotch flap is up on his tummy, miles away from his crotch. torso is huge and bulky, despite changing the transformation in ways that should have fixed that. hands are tiny, wings are hollow half-finished messes, bird legs are also tiny. tiger face is pretty phoned in.

i'm not certain they could have mounted it underneath. Tigatron's got excellent chest-to-arms engineering, the only spot left would be clipped to his robot mode pelvis like the original, but the tv version isn't that triangular shape anymore, and there's no room for the barrel (which IS removable, so you can store it separately I suppose), and they'd need a big ugly peg-hole for that to happen. which would still put it upside-down (the guts should face up)
the original only worked because that part of the gun was thin, flexible plastic for a water squirter gimmick, so it could clip in gently.

this is one of those weird authorized ones, that can be sold on non-chinesey stores, so I think not. I mean hasbro might make a separate toy of this character, which i would prefer, but it looks like the movie line is dead in the water.

If DNA is hasbro's glowie puppet front then they WILL make their own version but they're going to gangstalk you on insta and wait exactly 7 days and 5 mins after you've received your addon kit I.e. I still feel it was a miss cross-marketing move to not put out both Jetfire and Tidal Wave in United. Not sure why they would be worried about Optimus flopping as no matter how people feel about the UT, they will still buy it because it's an Optimus Prime. However, my biggest question right now is why they are not doing Armada Red Alert this year to go with Prime and Hot Shot.

You missed the Pulse sale in him a little while back - I nabbed one for myself at the time. Not sure if I'll get the Apelinq conversion kit, though - on the one hand, I already have the Kingdom Primal and didn't really need a second figure of the same character, but on the other, Ultimate Primal is a genuinely fun toy all on his own and is far superior to the Kingdom toy.

ehh I think of the movie guys as their own guys. it's not like I think of dino-legs dorito starscream as the g1 guy, even less crotchety old bearded jetfire. Or at least maybe i can imagine them as alternate technorganic forms, from a new, better version of Beast Machines (Which deep down, I think we all want. a redo. a mulligan on that.). I just like their designs, and I want studio series primal too because he looks totally different from Ultimate (that said though, aint paying 60 bucks for what is basically an elaborate voyager)
