ok, can someone explain the appeal of tiny, non-poseable, non-painted, low detail toys when u can get fully articulated, painted, detailed, larger soldiers with interchangeable guns/gear??

Scale is a significant factor; action figures are big and bulky and more expensive, best you can do unless you're a rich kid with a big house and big yard is small firefights.

Recycle a few cans, pick up some change off the ground and do some chores for Grandma and you can quickly earn a dollar.

For a dollar I could buy a bag containing a full strength infantry platoon and a supporting elements. Oftentimes these bags also came with fortifications, field guns, vehicles and aircraft.

For five dollars I could field an army, for ten I could field two opposing armies. Mowing a few lawns or shoveling a few driveways and I could field empires.

I had my share of action figures back in the day, GI Joes too. But I liked being able to wage full battles and campaigns with my plastic soldiers vs just waging firefights and skirmishes with GI Joes and action figures.

Even though I prefer articulated figures I can still see the appeal of classic plastic army men. They’re innocent yet inspiring in the way all good toys are and because they are so cheap you can really go all out when you play with them.
They just require more imagination.

For a time you could have the best of both worlds with Mega's Call of Duty line but unless you go the knock-off route (which is still pretty good imho) that window has largely closed since Mega lost the license and has been foundering in general.

This is kind of tricky. Both of the companies have themes that have most of what you want. The fantasy stuff is more like Conan than LoTR. I can't remember which company does Western stuff--it could be both, it could be just one--but they do a bunch of stuff even beyond figures (horse, charts, and ETC). As for monsters, I don't really know about this. I know one of the companies I mentioned has Sci-Fi stuff with aliens.

Armies in Plastic does a wide array of plastic toy soldiers from various wars and periods. As for Wild West stuff, you could roll with Timmee, Paragon, vintage Airfix, or IMEX.

I had GI Joes and Army Men. I probably spent 1000s of hours setting up and having elaborate battles with Army Men. GI Joe I usually tried to find a good pose and then left it as is.

Because I grew up playing the 3d0 games and the idea of tiny plastic army men ending up in our world and using irl tools and toys as weapons of mass destruction is insanely appealing to me.

It was a springboard for my own ideas, like anything else kids grow up watching/playing before transforming it with their own imagination. Now that I'm grown, along with nostalgia, I still just really like the concept of Borrowers sized armies of guys melting eachother with magnifying glasses and shit like that. That clear things up? If anything, I wish more companies made solid colored 1/18th soldiers like a few makers have done previously in all the factions like tan, blue, green, etc. at a more affordable cost than whats out there rn.

As of a couple months or so ago, every thread starts autosaging 14 days after its time of creation. It was a clumsy response to a thread spammer that is hurting comfy threads like this one. Sucks a hard one but so far there's been radio silence from the powers that be, so we just have to live with it.
