It'll give them a good starter collection (or expansion of a preexisting collection) of bricks that aren't set-specific (like "truck" or "spaceship" or "licensed character") so they can foster their creativity. Truck or spaceship or licensed character sets aren't bad either, but it's good to start with the generic basics.
If it's not a set that includes its own storage bucket like in my pic, also go to the dollar store and pick up something with a lid. The parent will thank you for it. Grab some stickers there as well so the kid can customize their boring container into something fun and personal.
