So, I'm in absolutely no position to be asking this since I have a box fort comprising 12 kits with another 5 on the way via P-Bandai, but:

How/where does one purchase Gunpla online without paying an arm and a leg in the US? The big one I hear that keeps getting tossed around on /m/ is Surugaya, but what other options are there? A good chunk of the top of my wishlist are things that I'll probably have to wait for P-Bandai for, but there's also a number of HG kits from G-Reco and IBO that I would not be against obtaining given the opportunity. My local hobby shop doesn't stock many HGs that aren't WfM, and Hobby Lobby only ever has Barbatos and occasionally Bael.

I've been fiddling around here and there with lineart coloring to do a custom paint job for an MG Strike Freedom Full Burst that I snagged from my cousin some years ago. I'm keeping the gold-plated joints since that's the entire reason the kit exists, otherwise I want to try to convert the Strike Freedom into a villain suit. This is what I arrived at after a few iterations.

The original was black and red since it's easy to make a villain color scheme with that, but it needed more accent colors and I couldn't make purple highlights work with it. This one is a variation on a suggestion I got, I thought I could get a black and dark purple scheme like a dark Britannian knight, but I tossed in some dark magenta accents and it seems to be the least offensive variant I could come up with.

Anyone have any suggestions for improvement? I was originally planning to make this the second paint job I did with my airbrush, but I'm delaying it for potentially entering something into the group build.

Look into the color named "russian aircraft blue" (Mr. Color 393). Its a very very dark color that's slightly purple-ish. You could substitute it for the black on the wings or body.

I've been meaning to try Dspiae electric sander for something other than sanding and so I did.
I wouldn't use it for any kind of finishing, but for rough demolitions jobs like this it works pretty good, doesn't have the crazy RPMs of Dremel, doesn't throw shavings all over the place, very quiet. I bet it will work great for drilling out bubbles and other similar jobs.

Looked it up and did a quick impressioning, I like the combination. Then I started running into the problem of too many colors, two purples and three grays along with two or three accent colors starts to get too much. So I reduced it to two grays (or rather, one gray and one almost-black), two purples, gold-plated joints and magenta accents, with the eyes and cameras still up for debate.

This one seems to work quite well, thanks for the suggestion. The colors aren't too busy and they blend well together.

So, a bit of a follow-up: After doing a bit of browsing and research, HLJ seems to be my best bet for the kits I want, at least in terms of prices. Literally all the kits are on back order though, which I assume means that I'd have to wait months before any of them come back in stock. For the types of kits I want (e.g. HG G-Reco, and HG and FM IBO), how long would I probably have to wait?

Guys what the FUCK happened here?

I just top coated this model with tamiya ts-80 like I've done with a thousand other kits before without any issue, and it's created this fucking frosted effect that's FUCKED this entire thing

What the fuck did I do wrong? I've literally never had an issue using this top coat before

humidity, most likely. You can fix it by giving it another good coat of topcoat, since that 'melts' the frosting again so it can cure correctly. do check the humidity before spraying again

Seconding that it's probably either humidity or temperature.
If it's cold, put your spray can in warm water for a few minutes before spraying.

I'm in aus and its summer here, but I just checked humidity and it's 95% so you may be onto something

Okay I'll try and do another top coat when it's dryer and see if that fixes it

newfag here, I'm looking to graduate from HGs and build my first RG but can't decide between red frame astray or unicorn gundam, is there anything that makes either or these better than the other (loose joints, pieces prone to falling off etc) or should I just go with whatever one looks cooler?

I'm no expert, but given the Unicorn has a transformation gimmick it's almost certainly going to be the more complex build and have less stability— probably not ideal for your first RG.

There shouldn't be any problem mixing a lacquer paint with a paint which uses a different type of solvent, right? I want a lighter shade of a lacquer paint but the only white I have is the tamiya acrylic and I'm not going to go out and buy a lacquer white if I can help it.

Typically people mix paint of the same kind and the same brand if they want predictable results.

But, since you insist on saving a $5, please do try and post the results of an experiment that nobody would otherwise attempt. Your experience will advance the humananity's knowledge.

You mean shading in general or figure shading specifically?
The point of shading is to create darker shadows in recesses and such that would not be as pronounced at a small scale.
When shading a human figure, depending on how realistic you want to get, you might also want to apply redish/pinkish/brownish shades where human skin tends to have that particular coloration (inner sides of joints, knuckles, bottoms of feet, cheeks, etc etc).

Recently acquired a badger airbrush and a 3 gal air compressor.
So far all I have decided on is using Acrylic paint because I have kids in the house and limited space.
What is the proper order for painting, panel lining, topcoating, and stickers? Also what panel liner works best with acrylic paint?

That's unrelated, you shouldn't be spraying *anything* in a limited space with kids. Either set up a proper workshop where you can spray safely, or back to the handbrush you go.

1. Prime
2. Paint

4. Panel wash with enamel
5. Dry decals
6. Seal with top coat

Keep in mind that stickers will always stick out like a sore thumb, no matter what kind of top coat you use, and do really poorly under a gloss coat. Most people recommend just getting waterslides to replace the stickers, but if you don't want to invest that kind of money then you might just be fine stickering after panel washing and then matt coating to finish things off.

As for panel washing, I've heard that enamel washing on top of acrylic is fine without a gloss coat since they use different solvents, but I've also heard that acrylic coats are quite weak and not something you want to handle until after you've top coated them. You may have to do your own research on that.

Unlike lacquers, acrylics don't generate fumes, so there's no lingering hazard even after you're done painting.

Spray a bit of acrylic silver into the air in your room and watch the air shimmer for the rest of the day.
Anything atomized will end up in your lungs unless you extract the air with that substance from the room (and some small quantity would still remain anyway).

You don't want your kids lungs have that in them either from the early age. What you breathe in yourself is your business, what you let others breathe in is your responsibility (or lack thereof).

Snapshitting the MG Strike E.
Ended up snapping one of the pegs in the arms. Was expecting it to be a pain in the ass, but it actually holds together fine somehow.
I picked up an airbrush a bit ago and did intend on painting it, so I'll fix it when the time comes.
I'll try not to let it rot among my other kits with moderate issues that I never fix.

You bring up a good point. I will be using a homemade spray booth with a fan and filter, and not spraying when the kids are inside. Still don't want to use anything harsher than acrylic for the safety factor.

Do yourself a favor and build the RG Hi-Nu. Without exaggeration its one of the best kits out there. The RG Sazabi is also fantastic. But the final decision really is- whatever one looks coolest to you

Be sure to keep a sponge with some thinner for spraying acrylic. Tip tends to dry and needs wiped from time to time. Air out also needs air in, so a little thought to airflow goes a long way.

That does help. Depending on how dry humidity is where you are spraying, the tip may still dry a bit. Not enlugh for a full clog but enough to throw your spray off.

I have built it. It is nothing spectacular. The vast majority of the inner frame remains two piece clamshells with very minimal detail layering beyond the lower calves, which I will admit were pretty interesting to put together but the primary feature of the back of the leg opening wasn't anything new (MG did it years before).
Due to the kit being a much larger 1/144 scale kit, the parts density isn't particularly impressive, especially if you have built late UC MGs like the Vicotrys and F91s.
It honestly brought nothing new to the table, despite being another slightly smaller MG (which RG crossbone already did at the smaller end of 1/144 scale).
The proportions aren't great and I personally much more prefer the aesthetics of the Ver Ka. RG Unicorn was a much more impressive kit due to the transformation mechanism, RG Crossbone was a much more impressive RG due to scale, interior detail was less impressive than golden age MG kits.

Ordered a Moderoid Helldiver that I'm planning on painting, what's the recommended way of welding seams on pieces with joint articulation like pic related? I checked the guide and it recommended putting the pieces together without the joint and painting, then opening the pieces back up afterwards and adding the joint back in. It's literally just putting stickers where the manual tells you. It's not complicated at all. Like 90% or more of all stickers are in places where it perfectly lines up with the piece so there's zero guesswork. The only real thing you need to worry about is cleaning the surface of the piece prior to application, and making sure nothing gets onto the underside of the sticker between taking it off the sheet and putting it on the piece.

Eventually you want to get to a point where you paint the details on to the piece instead of using stickers.

Thanks for the suggestion, this is actually what I was originally going to use since I just started building the F91, but I realized the blades that Aerial has are a bit flatter than these. Sandpaper and/or glass file can really help file the surface down to zero. But the plastic will always look different there no matter what you do, so in the long run the best course of action is to paint the kit.

Is the dspiae/madworks chisels good? the dspiae chisel handle is cheap than madworks but dspiae chisel is expensive than madworks. Can the madworks chisel fit on dspiae handle?

Different anon here, is it worth it to buy a generic brand chisel/scribing set on Amazon? And for that matter, those stencil plates for scribing more details onto kits?

I already have scribing tools on my to-buy list, but I'm not sure if I need something particularly name brand or if there's a "gold standard" that's recommended. I'm not intending to do any of that stupid over-the-top panel lining bullshit where a regular smooth surface suddenly becomes greeble hell, but I do at least want something to deepen the existing panel lining on my kits so that I don't lose as much detail after priming and painting.

All right, I must be missing something here, because I could get a set that contains like 60% of the stuff there on Amazon, for like twenty bucks or so and not have to bother with shipping charges because my brother has Prime. Are scribing tools for Gunpla really supposed to cost you an arm and a leg? Because this is approaching what I paid for my spray booth.

Well, it is sharp and much more sturdy than a cheap generic no-name ebay chisel, I used the generic cheap 0.15mm before and it's very easy to break. Also cheap chink chisel handle is 80 cent

There's a puncture method where you let the paint settle in the bottom of the can (might take a few days), then cover the top with a plastic bag and poke a hole in the metal to let out the propellant only. Once you let out all the propellant you can just pour the paint out of the hole into a jar.

Improving a kit's engineering is fun, but only to a point. If you have to reengineer every fucking thing, it gets tedious.
I don't really want to imagine what this scooter would look like had I just followed the instructions (the handlebar would wobble around like crazy, for one). Vintage Aoshima kits are not very impressive.

The nano files that are a bunch of tiny holes only sand stuff that's sticking up/out of the surface. The glass files that are more like typical sanding rods with ridges and therefore you only get one "level" of sanding vs. sandpaper where you can adjust grit level. Which isn't necessarily an issue if it's doing what you want it to do.

Popsicle stick will be fine. The boards can be useful if they're thin/shaped to help you get into weird little areas. I wouldn't personally buy just a straight up plastic/carbon fibre/whatever the fuck rectangle though unless it came with the sandpaper or something.
