>>10836974The relative small amount of hype toys that have people buying them for thousands, or now even tens of thousands, are largely bullshit driven by typical hysteria trend setting nonsense.
But in terms of the actual appeal of sofubi toys:
- generally high quality. the majority of sofubi vinyl is going to hold up way better than most plastics you'll find in mass market toys.
- endless variation and experimentation. there is truly something for everyone, and new, interesting things being made all the time. Most toys are all samey nonsense, a walk down the toy isles can be depressing with how much little imagination is on display. While there are exceptions it feels like most toylines are just "human or humanoid usually 6 inch figure".. it's bland, samey shit all the time. Not with sofubi.
- as mentioned already by you and others, there is the fewest amount of people in the creative pipeline, with sometimes only a single person making everything from concept to sculpt to toy. It's someones' art and personality through and through vs corporate trash.
>>10836987sofubi being statues is a wildly outdated notion even though many still continue to be fairly simple. There are sofubi figures with all sorts of neat playable functions and gimmicks. Again, variety. There's even sofubi with balljoints and things that approach super articulation. There's sofubi with simple yet mind blowing transformation gimmicks. Working within the confines of the process allows imagination and creativity well beyond the "here's a 3d sculpt of whatever slop human character" that you're advocating for.
