Based thread. Not an army men collector myself, but I loved these dudes as a kid. I remember assembling a small force from different packs I got from time to time, with some soldiers being higher quality sculpts than others. I wonder why the makers cared to go the extra mile.

A lot of the army men come down from first rate companies who made them for wargaming and/or as high quality toys. Over time their originals have been cloned, copied, imitated and distorted, often with cheaper plastics and manufacturing techniques, thus the wide disparity in army men quality. Pic related, these soldiers are about as far removed from their origins as you can get - a mix of Airfix, Matchbox, New Ray and other poses from at least five different armies, slightly smaller, considerably less detailed with some figs almost flattened.

I didn't, have always played with the real thing, didn't learn about the games until long after their heyday. I understand for the most part the games were shooters or squad-based tactics, something I'd enjoy as a video game but considerably different from how I played with my soldiers. I like large-scale battles with scores of troops, armor, artillery and defended positions; there were a handful of hero characters but they were only part of the larger picture, a lot more like some RTS games.

These blue Germans and the space truck are among my oldest toys, the latter all that remains from the big spaceport set I had forever ago.

Interesting. Yeah, due to influence from the games I grew up with my adventures always following my own "Sarge" who was basically a little plastic Rambo. I'd set tan fortifications and troops around whatever room I was playing in and my protagonist would slowly traverse from point A to point B, gunning his way through insurmountable odds, give or take some allies along the way.

Oh yeah, I think those 3DO games are what really got me into army men as a hobby. I remember picking out a handful of green soldiers with different weapons (rifle, machine gun, bazooka, etc.) and pretended that they were Sgt. Hawk and the Bravo Company Commandos. I'd stage a whole bunch of little adventures they'd get up to while fighting Gen. Plastro and his legions. Small Soldiers also served as some inspiration, since I remember pretending that both the Greens and Tans were staging heists in hobby stores in my local town to build larger weapons (model rockets, Gundams, VEX Robotics kits).

These days, my army men games are largely episodic. I have my own designated "Sarge" who is the recurring protagonist, who finds himself in different skirmishes and battles with different objectives and factions.

Thanks, anon! I really like toy photography, and army men are really good for just about any backdrop or setting. Here's some more of that 3DO influence with other toys seeping into the plastic conflicts.

What's the best method you guys use for getting dirt and grime out of used army men? I bought some handfuls of various figures at my local antique store, and while they were super cheap, they're also super filthy. All I can think of is alcohol and q-tips along with a soapwater bath followed by gently scrubbing with a soapy toothbrush. Any other methods or cleaning materials I should consider here?

I love the corp series myself, but the beige/grey colored guys some great details. And nothing wrong with the true heroes, I use them as cannon fodder for the older Tim mees. Have some greens mounting an escape outside.
