Those two are both top tier because most of the actual castle sets have always been pretty lame, it’s extremely ironic that the best sets in the “castle” theme have usually been bandit hideouts, boats, siege weapons, jousts, minifig packs and even villages because most of the castles look worse than something a 7 year old can make with generic bricks

I went ahead and finished putting together 70404, the set my parents bought me for Christmas 10 years ago but then left in a closet.
I can kind of see why people accuse it of being the castle that killed Castle as it’s probably too challenging for very young builders (6 to 10yo), but unlikely to hold the interest of experienced builders.
Had three brown bricks snap during the build but conveniently, or perhaps suspiciously, replacements for those three specific bricks were already provided.
There was also significant yellowing on a number of gray bricks, which is worrying considering they’re less than 15yo.
The brick quality is vastly inferior to my old man’s sets from the 80’s and early 90’s, however it’s on par with what we’ve got today.
Siege engine side builds were fun, but I deeply regret covering the dragon catapult with st*ckers.
If I were to assign the set a review score I’d say it gets a 6/10.
Do I regret putting it together instead of dumping it unopened on BL for a quick 400 dollars? Not at all hahaha…

So are Dragon Masters good guys or bad guys?
They fight the Black Knights who’ve historically been bad guys, but they’re led by Majisto who’s typically a bad guy in licensed media (children’s books, magazines, etc).
But now it seems like Majisto’s allied himself with the Lion Knights/Crusaders who’ve been good guys since day 1.
Lego Castle lore is too complex for me.

I once bought an expensive lego lot on ebay that had like 50 minifigs among other things, mostly for the classic pirate and knight minifigs, only to later find out this minifig was included and actually the rarest one in the lot.

Strangely enough, there's a Chinese bootleg (Enlighten brick 207) for a smaller-sized barracuda ship that comes with a blue-colored version of that torso.

I believe they are a renegade faction of Black Knights, they joined Majisto after he harnessed the dragons. That's why they have a similar colour scheme and shield/banner. Some historians believe the Black Falcons were also a Black Knights subgroup that split off many years earlier.

There were a series of probably noncanonical comics that appeared in the UK magazines in which the Falcons were initially led by a character who was just referred to as the black knight.
The black knight was initially the rival and best of Sir Leo, leader of the Crusaders, but he was corrupted by a magic jewel and attempted to overthrow the kingdom (which I don't think Leo was the ruler of).
Most of the Falcons remained loyal to the kingdom, but those who didn't became the black knights.
Again, I don't know if any of this should be regarded as canon.
Nintendo Power use to run comics occasionally and I doubt they were ever considered canon

Quality's not great and a quarter of them will come with an overly tight or loose hand, arm, or leg, but if you've got replacement lego body parts, then it's a good way to fill out a whole castle moc. I'm going to do things for myself and classic fans, but also normal people and actual cash. I'm keeping themes I don't care about that sell. Brickheads, Botanical and Art sets hit a target consumer that isn't into traditional playset type builds.

That said, license slop is getting its fat fucking trimmed to make room for a grand comeback/push of classic themes. Star Wars sells no doubt, but will get less sets with more 'value' and a higher cost. Marvel and DC will stop having film based themes and instead a single "brand" theme with sets taking from whatever. Also limiting sets to focus on Lego brands and higher prices. Dangle exclusive minifigures for license consumers.

Big push on the Lego trinity of Pirate/Castle/Space. City already has a large and good focus, nothing there would change. Except maybe to streamline it a little.

Classic Castle would return. Classic factions with new castles and bases. Battle packs and smaller builds that supplement larger sets or can be put together. Limit fantasy elements. Keeps it distinct from LotR/D&D/HP. Focus on the Castle brand. Make kids know the faction names and root for different ones like you would teams. The good or bad guy is whomever you like best. Marketing is about who do YOU want to rule the kingdom.

Classic Pirate, with new ships and islands and forts. Return of Islanders (in a more "heroic" role for modern audiences). Brick built "Kraken" monster squid and "Sea Serpent" with tons of minifigures sets. Classic monkey mold (or new similar mold) returns. Focus on Imperials being heroic working with Islanders to stop the Pirates. All sets that focus on one faction have an 'opposing' faction character to interact with.

Classic Space returns, though it never really left. But the branding returns and a push to make it 'cool'. A focus on smaller ships and bases that connect, encouraging multiple purchases of a set to incorporate with several displays or builds.

All 100 percent printed in that set. It's quite beautiful. I'm a pirate guy through and through, but this might be my favorite set that has no boat (even though a boat wpuld have greatly improved it). The building techniques blew me away in several places and made me say "huh" and "cool" out loud several times. Also, I was quite impressed with the rooftops in having details that added texture, but weren't busy and still felt somewhat classic. The set looks much nicer in person than in most photos. The black packaging really did it no favors, it looks much nicer in brighter settings

Return all City/Castle/Pirate/Space sets to having one alternative build showcased on the back with the large lettered phrase "What Will Your Imagination Build?!" above it. This would be an aggressive marketing pitch in advertising with 'classic' themes.

Icons line is being trimmed into TV shows and movie themes. One new set based on a sitcom and one based on a different movie, each Spring and Winter. So twice a year, two big sets each from a sitcom and movie. Eat up that slop license lovers.

Keep the push on the Creator theme. Have bi yearly supplemental Creator sets for all major themes, introducing licensed Creator sets. This will highly encourage multiple purchases from license consumers, but might also inspire them to BUILD new stuff and get in on other more classic lines.

Introduce head prints that have male and female faces on either side to be used on neutral torsos. This will eliminate the gender equality gap and make both 'sides' happy. It can be spun really nice for PR.

Have the gaming division make a kid friendly open world Elder Scrolls type game with Castle theme. There is huge money just waiting to be made there. Explore the idea of a Purate themed game and if it would be an adventure or a training-wheels strategy game.

I would include one classic Smile face in each set that had minifigures. Just because.

I would bring back the paper pamphlet in the boxes that showed off other sets in the same theme. QR codes next to each that brings you to a video showcasing each set and an alternative build you can make with it.

Friends wpuld obviously stay. It targets and more importantly, SELLS to a demographic that would not be interested in other themes. It is able to sell to a little girl dollhouse market that would otherwise overlook Lego altogether, and even convert a percentage into general Lego consumers. Just like the Brickheads sell to a market that is wildly different than a classic Lego customer. But expansion is good. Market dominance is good, at least if I'm CEO.

I'm just saying I would so a lot of trimming on licensed lines, especially ones that target older audiences. Star Wars would get fewer sets, but they would have more to them, while also being even more expensive and 'premium'. This would squeeze more money out of people, and help elevate the nonlicensed Space theme. Same for Castle vs fantasy medieval licenses. That with a media push of Lego Space and Lego Castle games and/or animated series to really make those generic themes into brands themselves.

But yes, I'm keeping licenses. Just trimming and focusing them to get more cash while elevating in house beanding

Exactly, one of the best themes but unlike say pirates in which the central ships were very cool, castles just didn't seem to translate well to the old set design philosophy. Though I would still rather have shitty castles if it meant lots of other good smaller sets.
the market village is an amazing set, I'm putting mine back together soon now that my dark age is over, got nearly all the parts together in a bag

Had to rebuild the entire Starry Night wall from scratch. My question is, will it mess up anything if I just put three sides of the frame on? I want it to stand on my desk. I already have paintings on my wall and I didn't want to hang it up, but I must admit, the frame looks nice and contains the chaos of the sky. I don"t really have any other Lego to fill in the missing bricks with but I could probably find something in the PAB eventually.

Most of what Lego is doing currently is working well enough, so I would just simplify things a little bit. I'd get rid of a lot of unnecessary brick colors. Too many blues. End bright green. It's not that different from regular green. Stop making so many things in gold. That makes it less rare and gold should not be common. I have way too many gold weapons in my collection and they should be rarities to treasure. Definitely do more old fan pandering. Instead of killing off Mindstorm, at least keep it on the website and flagship stores for purchase. Put the minifig series back in bags or do codes so people who do want certain figures can get what they want.

They need a minimum of rotation and margin for their shelves, and these types of sets don't pay the clerks' salaries.

And it is more profitable for LEGO to ship one big set in a box than a box full of $5 sets.

But we need the starter sets to come back. The Ninjago one with the four figures and the mech is a success (but maybe not good for LEGO's finances).

Lego doesn't care what you build out of the bricks and they've never cared. In fact they knew well their bricks would be used to build many pairs of cock and balls. Grey bricks at the time were ever so slightly more expensive to produce and having all grey castles didn't fit their design philosophy at the time, since realism and "accuracy" weren't as valued back then.

I think $10 to $30 sets are the new impulse.

And LEGO has a lot of these sets (also in licensed themes).

There is no other reputable and safe toy brand that offers some figures and a little building for even $10 (the Karts set, the Mobile Bakery Food Cart, Mateo's Off-Road Car, and others).

Playmobil prices have risen to the moon and for $10 you get a figure with few accessories.

At Mattel, for $10 you can get a few cars or a half-naked Barbie (because some of the clothes are painted).

An MGA surprise ball, some kiosk toys, and no more options.

LEGO has not removed the impulse sets, they have the polybags. The problem, at least in Europe, is that there are few places to get them (I hope that poly bags will come back to the local supermarkets as they did 10 years ago)

I don't know the answer. And as you can see, the other brands don't know the answer either.

So while the other brands are losing sales and profits, LEGO is rising.

Meanwhile, people find an 80€ Playmobil, Mattel or Hasbro set expensive, LEGO is releasing $300+ sets every month.

Yes, there are a lot of people who can't afford a $300+ LEGO set, and also people who can't afford a $80 Playmobil set.

But there are enough people who are willing to pay for high priced (and of course more overpriced) LEGO sets to make the LEGO strategy feasible.

Of course, there are a lot of people who only buy LEGO in discount, but it seems that there are enough people who buy LEGO sets at original price.

Playmobil licensed sets are gathering dust on the shelves also in hard discount. Hasbro and Mattel are in the same situation.

Yes and no. It's one of my all time favourites in terms of looks. Was also really fun to build and can be displayed with a lot of other themes and aesthetics. But it's a bit of a dust collector since it isn't poseable at all if you're looking for play features.
You can still get it at a decent price so you haven't really missed your chance.

Number 1 thing that a DnD set needs to have is the ability to be used as you landscape in an actual game, which the leaked sets seem to not be doing. They need to do a dungeon builder subtheme if they aren't making it the main point.
Second thing it needs is a massive variety of minifigs. You need character minis to go with the map, see, so you't want to have minifigs that cover most options. Of course you can swap the face and hands off of a dragonborn barbarian and put them on a human wizard's torso and that would work, but what if I play Thri'Kreen, or Plazmoid?
Third is monster builds, but they seem to have that covered. Just make sure the build scale lines up with the proper sizes for the map builds.
Put these three aspects together akd you can run whole games with just offical lego product, whoch for both WOTC and Lego is the ideal result for the collab.

You think modern lego would have visible studs on top of anything? No sir, you're getting your set inflated with 500000 tiles.
Though lego doesn't do transparent on transparent because friction so maybe they'll just make it one solid piece with the studs pre-removed.

Couldn't accomodate his stand because it extends below the ground, which I am using as a base as opposed to the frame and stand, because it has so much surface area that it is completely stable, if I should bump it. I quite like him as his own little curio tho.

it's just import a 3d model into voxel into lego bricks of generic "woah..." newspaper editorial illustration imagery without any real cool builds or techniques

if you like to see a gajilion bricks or semi lifesized sculptures and that's fun sure, but to me it feels like watching the sculpture equivalent of clipart that only just happens to be lego for cycnical marketing demographic gimmick purposes
