With LEGO, I think you do need IRL friends with that interest who also live nearby, two things I lack in my place (have friends, just not toys enthusiasts), for it to make sense as a hobby.
But I would love to work with LEGO. I do think the characters are limited by the brick design and that would be part of my idea, probably.
