First how many children do you think would be interested in a toy they don't know anything about let alone one they and their parents can't make function to begin with, even with how simple modern figures have become?
Second is what happens to a child that does see and likes the shows then wants a specific character, only to go to the store with their parents, finally bitch fit enough to actually get a toy, only for it to be a cheap inferior figure, or worse, not finding the character and settling for a different character in the same inferior sublime.
Children may be generally stupid but they catch on to things quickly. If they experience something shit they know it's shit. Even as a 5-6 year old I didn't fucking want a spy changer, give me the actual Scourge, I don't want some shitty flip flipchangeing jet, I want megatron. The gimmicks of the figures was also important, myself and many friends loved the minicons in Armada and loved the play features they unlocked on the bigger figures, we knew the larger figures had shit articulation, but still had fun with what they could do. Energon too, most of the autobots were awful by themselves, but I don't think there was a single bad decepticon mold in that line, and the super mode gimmicks were fantastic.
