Added some apps of black and blue in certain places. Might redo the blue since it's in shitty metallic Gundam Marker. Went with black on the knees because I thought straight blue was too much. I think I'll probably do some red spots too but I don't really want to spend all that time masking again today. I don't think I'll add any of the yellow. I also dinged up his needle nose part because the side with the peg sticks out on the bottom of the foot ever so slightly so it got some damage. I touched it up with the same metallic marker but it looks like shit.

My black paint apps aren't perfect either. Still looks better than naked, though. Luckily if I have to repaint his entire body after fucking it up, it shouldn't be hard.

NTA, and I'm a pretty big fan of Generations Kup, but the robot mode IS a bit clunky, especially the forearm panels that the instructions tell you to rotate so they're even MORE in the way.

But my argument is that we really should embrace alt. mode clunkiness. I don't mind door panels on forearms, generally. I hate how the obsession with giving every robot the generic cartoon silhouette from G1 has resulted in utterly horrid transformations with stupid engineering expenses and compromised alt modes. I'd rather have a clean alt mode and a clunky robot mode 100 times out of 100. An alien robot doesn't need to have a clean silhouette, but an alt mode "disguise" that isn't clean is objectively shit and completely missing the point.

Absolutely agree on that front. The only reason I even bought the dude back in the day was because the iGear heads were pretty easy to get a hold of. But once that's taken care of, he's an absolute chad, even with all the kibble. Some of his arm joints could be a little smarter, and it sucks that his shoulders don't lock in, but for a toy that's like 15 years old, it's still appealing.

The best thing that Studio Series Kup can hope for is to be replaced by something marginally more accurate in about 2 or 3 years. Yawn.

These guys are armorizers so they split up at a few odd section in order to add onto other figures, and they might have a little combined mode coming up given the armorizers before them. Shard’s the best one

Who said that, exactly? It's not that people are calling it a good thing, it's just that Shard is canonically the female of the group while Magneous is explicitly male (despite the obvious boobs, big hips and narrow waist). We didn't get to choose who the fembot was, and Shard very definitely doesn't look like her supposed inspiration (who had visible tits). But it is what it is - just gotta accept it and move along.

Having carefully sawed apart the legs (and waiting on a chuck so I can drill holes and rejoint them with ball joints) I can tell you that what happened is.. they sculpted out decent-looking ant legs, and then kept tweaking the proportions, making them turn at joints that shouldn't turn, in favor of getting the approximate right leg silhouette. and it works, when viewed from above. aaaand.. that's it. every other angle looks awful
And the reason his hands are so tiny is they have to hide up inside the thorax.
I have an idea for Inferno to cut the wrist-cuff-ant-legs so they can be removed in transformation, and replaced with better big claw fingers. but that might be beyond my scratchbuilding ability.

Yeah I know. I was surprised as well that Silverbolt's head is almost up to Starscream.

Both really cool figures as well. CMDStore is sending me a second Silverbolt because mine is "broken" in this picture (a hinge is broken but it only presents during transformation) so I might customize this guy as well as finish up Starscream once I get some 1mm masking tape for in between the fins of his shin vents.

I have no attachment to the UT, but the figures they've been throwing out as of late are hard to not want. Especially since this one is based off of Don F's War Within design.

In this pic I can see where the stupid fucking rifle butt chipped his right arm blue paint and it's driving me nuts. Dunno how to color match him.

You can almost not tell that I dropped the right arm right after painting him and chipped a corner on the red.

They didn't mention anything about Starscream's mysterious gun on the stream (doesn't look like anything like the original toy's missile launcher, but it looks too particular to just be a generic). Maybe the photo sets will give more insight into it. Sunstorm must be the recolor that they were hinting at making.

I think he had a gun on the original toy. This one you can plug the key into. Doesn't do anything obviously. And plus it fills in some space in his vehicle mode, so I don't hate it. I just hate how painfully short the grip is because it pushes into the blue paint on his forearms.

He's about the same height as all the other nice and poseable bois like Tarn and Jhiaxus. I'd say for a modern Voyager he is more than worth the price. But I know what you mean. Plus he is in scale now with Metroplex.

Supreme didn't have a rifle. The left blade got replaced by a cannon when he got supreme'd. The voyager did have a rifle that might have showed up once or twice in the anime, but it was mostly just a rectangle. The new one uses concept art for the rifle.

when I was a kid my bat Primal came off the track and for years I just thought it was broken because the neck wouldn't snap into place. Kid me thought the sprue mark on the back of the neck was a broken peg. A couple years ago I pulled it out and figured out what was wrong and fixed it.

I don't think any of the mechanisms broke for me desu. I think I still have Rattrap and he still works fine. Not the reissue, the real deal. I also have Snapper but he's missing his gun and he works fine as well. He's still one of my favorite toys of all time.

They're the best looking Transmetals hands down. Tarantulas in particular is such a great design with the wheel whoulderpads and the way the spider legs end up in robot mode.

I actually like it a lot, specially the toy. There's something really ingenious at how simple but fun the transformation is. The way the whole torso rotates to change the metallic blue to organic, and how the back piece moves to hide the other mode chest as the sides of the gorilla turn into the robot shoulderpads is really neat.
Also dig the silly surfboard too, reminds me of Funky Kong. And can't help but see his blaster as the coconut gun.

I know I'm very fucking late to the party, but if you can get yourself a Buluke/Bloks model kit, at least the ROTB ones are super nice and fun to build. The plastic quality feels on par with Bandai and the result is nicely stylized and the LED adds a nice flavor to the thing. After building Prime, I had to order Primal and Arcee, along with their G1 Jazz with the LED.

I would argue that Primal's beast mode is the only one that's really close to the movie proportions, but I think that the robot mode Primal's shoulders throw off the style a bit. You can clearly see the stylization on Mirage or Scourge too, I feel.

Yeah, I don't think this is a good strategy honestly, especially for Soundwave. Grimlock's helmet wasn't really necessary and I don't think SG Prime came with anything specific, but locking Laserbeak behind a chase seems a bit icky. I would have suggested to make the chase variant Soundblaster instead of locking Laserbeak, but it would have probably gotten Buzzsaw anyway so yeah, that's just shifting the problem around.

I was very underwhelmed with Primal and Megatron at first. The way TFW sucks both figure’s dicks is insane. But, the more I mess with them the more I like them. Theyre both pretty awesome. As for Megatron, I can deal with the weak alt modes but his proportions are obviously fucked and his lack of an ab crunch drives me nuts. He is very fun to play with though. There are aspects of him that feel like an MP figure.
Regarding SS100, despite not collecting movie figures I really wanted a figure of him due to my growing up in West Virginia and having a massive fetish for CarTrucks. I had no idea this figure existed and had to have it. I even saw it at the store and didnt realize it was CarTruck Bee. It was pretty tough to track down now that its dried up. Just finished paining up his missing lights and bars on the doors. Hes pretty cool.

I haven't collected Transformers in over a year but something I couldn't stop thinking about and still can't even now is how deluxes were like $6 in the 90's when Beast Wars was going on and it makes me depressed.

I remember asking my grandma if I could have a Transmetal Rattrap for that price and at the time that day she said no because it was too expensive, and she bought me most of my old toys. I got it eventually though.

Try warming it up with some hot water or a hairdyer, the plastic might become more pliable and let you slide the bicep off. You could also try put some silicone oil in there, if you don't have it on hand you might as well go to your local hobby shop and grab some, it's great stuff and can really help with insanely tight joints.

I'm pretty positive Siege had no one new. It wasn't until ER that they started doing new characters, and even at that point they were technically remakes of the old micromaster bases, just given new robot modes. Kingdom was when we started getting wholly original characters with the fossilizers.

Don't forget a team of Megatron (G1), Galvatron (G1), Megatron (BW), Megatron (TM2), and Megatron (Armada). The game is basically about Space Bridge shenanigans pulling characters from different universes and different points in time, so multiple versions of the same characters is not only justified, but also something that's repeatedly commented on by the cast; Forged to Fight used a similar idea as well.
Also remember that it's possible to have multiples of the EXACT SAME CHARACTER in your collection based on their Star level - so a 2-star G1 Megatron, a 3-star G1 Megatron, et cetera. Duplicates of a weaker level could be used as upgrade fodder, and I imagine Heavy Metal would have used both of those approaches to both justify owning and encountering multiples/alternate universe counterparts of the same characters and to give you a reason to try to collect duplicates for use as fodder.

the rereleased ones are overpriced because they're recycled molds, and because they're poorly molded, poorly-painted, and inferior by modern standards, not because their price isn't roughly what it was back then adjusted for inflation. in the same way that videogames back then cost like 40-60 bucks but we sure wouldn't pay twice that now for a glitched port of mario 3.

Does anyone own both Studio Series 38 & 102 Optimus, and actually prefer 38? 102 seems way better in many ways but also inferior in just as many.

I think most of my issues with 102 are either the weird budgeting where they used less sprues than an average voyager or the type of gray plastic rather than 38's gunmetal. I still like 102 quite a lot but these make it feel more cheap or like it belongs with the mainline ROTB figures than Studio Series.

I just prefer a bot that has a good bot mode with a great alt mode, it feels like the compromises are more forgiving. 102 has the right idea with the torso though, it’s great that his back flap compresses higher up so that it doesn’t mess with his silhouette, I hope 86 optimus takes that into account while also not having the legs look like absolute shit while transformed. As fiddly as 38’s legs are, I just love how they clean up in both modes.

I am okay with simple tweaks to beast mode stuff that makes it more realistic, since it feels like they were winging it on the show, so the wasp eyes are good in my book. That's because the original toy's gut gun was made of the same colored plastic as the rest of his body, and he had no paint on his underbelly. The show copied the toy (though they colored the actual guts properly), resulting in it looking the 'wrong' color.

I own the original. On that one you actually flipped that part upside down to reveal green detail on top of the gun that is hidden in wasp mode. That's already way better than what the Kingdom one does (nothing).

What the hell anon. They look like ass in robot mode, it truly looks like it's mistransformed. At least on Tigatron they move further inside the leg instead of protuding in an awkward manner I guess, but on both of them the paws are just there.
In fact, the whole lower leg looks pretty terrible on both.

What are you talking about? The MP looks fucking perfect in robot mode, lower legs included. The cheetah hind legs are kibblefest but I will always take sacrifices in beast mode to get a better looking robot mode than the opposite.

In fact, most of the problems the new BW guys have all originate from the designers trying to make the beast modes more accurate to the actual animales (and failing hard in most cases).

Kingdom Cheetor's shins look like ass no matter what mental gymnastics anyone tries. As I said earlier, a ton of people in these threads were in disbelief when it was revealed, and for good reason.

It's a seriously underrated figure, and the best looking use of the mold, in my opinion. The only downside is that Botcon Hoist came from the factory misassembled. (And possibly Botcon Electron too?) He requires a little bit of surgery in order to fully transform properly into robot mode, and it was kind of a pain to do, but once it's done, he's great!

I can't find a good pic, but I'm pretty sure I finally figured out what was up with jhiaxus being completely unrelated in alt mode to his original design.

I think it was a scrapped POTP Megatronus idea.

In Forged to Fight, Megatronus transforms pretty similar, and has a VERY strange jet nose shape that matches jhiaxus, and ALSO has a boxy shape just hanging under the jet for no apparent reason

Anyone with Jhiaxus actually play the game? I can't find good pics anywhere

I ended up getting the Kingdom version despite having the T30 one because the waist hinge on the T30 just feels really unpleasant to transform, as if there is a counter on how many times you can transform it until it breaks.

There's a middle point between that and the shit the Kingdom figure does. A simpler version of what the MP does would have been better, hiding the animal legs on the back instead of leaving them awkwardly on the front.
The fact is, Kingdom Cheetor's shins are terrible looking. I'm sure the figure is enjoyable nonetheless, but the overall design of it doesn't convince me and the worst offender are those half-baked shins.

Miraculously, after being stuck with Kingdom leftovers and wave 1 legacy for who knows how long, one of the stores near me actually got all of United wave 1 sans Optimus and Tigerhawk. Now I have Bouldercrash. I'm liking him so far.

On a secondary note for anyone else who has him: Is Bouldercrash's backpack supposed to be 5mm compatible? I seem to be able to plug things into his left side, but not the right.

Hard disagree, I thought Siege was one of the most consistently good toylines we've had. The Siege Seeker is one of my favourite molds, and a lot of the figures work as just as well as Cybertronian vehicles or futuristic Earth vehicles.
That said I hope SS86 Megatron is good. The Netflix Siege redecos are decent enough, but ER Megatron is flat-out terrible. Especially egregious given ER Prime was a straight upgrade over the already fantastic Siege Prime.

Meanwhile almost every ER/kingdom retool ended up being an inferior mold. Be it because lazy holdovers from the seige mold that often looked ugly or served little purpose, random gaps in the figure due to features removes from the siege mold that they didn't bother to fix, sometimes inferior articulation because they didn't bother to account for the new tooling
And in the case of seekers they were given a brand new mold that completely sucks ass at everything except being a jet

Even YEARS later we finally get earth mode hound and guess fucking what, they were too lazy to get rid of all the siege details, so he has a random gap in the back of the jeep and non-existent seats. Laziness permeates through the whole line because they knew people would eat up geewun regardless

Anons, I have bad news that I'm sure will rip your poor hearts in two. There was literally no thought put into the cybertronian alt modes in the cartoon. The designers just threw together something that looked futuristic without any consideration to how the character could even transform into it. You're not going to get a Starscream that looks like Starscream in bot mode and also somehow transforms into an absolutely perfect tetrajet, at least not without it being a panel-y mess that Hasbro has no interest in making because Generations is a toy line and not a display piece line.

Not when the new toys don't bother trying to make the different proportions in the toy. Some of the recent Beast Wars guys manage to be even more kibble-y than the original because parts that formed part of the robot mode were replaced with molded detail while those just hung off the side somewhere.

If you look closely, you can tell that his arms form that squareish bulky part under the main body of the jet, and he has a gun mounted on the top center of it too.
Oh, and his hands have the same horizontal stripes to them in the same place.
The two fins sticking out of the side of the nosecone are clearly meant to fold over onto his chest, meaning that the nosecone folds up like jhiaxus'

The only thing that confuses me is the back end, cause it's hard to see, but it still looks like his legs are supposed to make up the back end.

It was a mix of both. Early documents show Hasbro intended the blue version, and that's what led Budiansky to go with the play on words name of "Bluestreak". Then they clearly waffled twice because the show wound up using a different Diaclone color scheme, and then Hasbro made him have an original deco anyway. Much like how the two Countach toys swapped colors before release, leaving Sideswipe and Sunstreaker's bios to describe features the other toy has.

To be fair, Michael Bay was still involved with Bumblebee, he was just in the producer role, and paired with Travis Knight as director (who is definitely a competent movie maker). He was IIRC less heavily involved with ROTB, but it was a mismanaged mess of a thing which turned into the same mangled globetrotting macguffin hunt that most of the Bay films turned into, with the added bonus of kinda crummy visuals (depressing given that one of the main appeals of the TF movies was the effects), diversity-hire cast and an incredibly botched attempt to appeal to BW fans without understanding what made BW great. Also the evidence of rushed rewrites and the flipflopping on whether it's a reboot or not.
Honestly I don't even think Bay is the Great Satan of TF movies. The first movie was actually pretty entertaining, and the rest ranged from objectively terrible but enjoyable to watch in a "this is so dumb but it has cool robots and hot babes" (ROTF and DOTM) to barely-watchable tripe that has a few good elements that do not belong in movies that bad (AOE and TLK). I actually reckon the real villain is Lorenzo di whateverthefuckhisnamewas, who is by all accounts pants-on-head retarded and probably to blame for a lot of the really terrible decisions in the series. IIRC he's been the executive producer for all 7 movies, and was VERY vocal about his role in ROTB.
All that to say I think Bay may have been a bit of a scapegoat for the shittier elements in the TF movie saga and Lorenzo is the real issue.

I agree that Lorenzo is the biggest issue but Bay is not innocent, and all his absolute worst traits permeate those movies. Lorenzo is the one who takes his top three favorite scripts and smashes them together into one plot, which is why we get random mishmases of plots.

The ones that have been G1 have either been them getting more use out of existing molds, like Siege Soundwave and Kingdom Galvatron, or doing characters they haven't yet, like Gears. They already did G1 Chromia in Siege using a mold that already had a large number of uses (and got another with Nightbird). The only other Chromia people really care about is her Cyberverse incarnation, so they grabbed a recent motorcycle mold and made it Chromia to sell as Cyberverse Chromia.

This one's only similar trait was how it had red on the shoulders. It just had a much better matching alt mode.

The 1 thing I would have done to make it a million times better is put slots so she could store the discs on the outside of her wings in robot mode to mimick the cyberverse mode.

It took a lot of patience, glue, and a live sacrifice to an Eldrich deity, but I managed to piece together the shattered left hip socket, and left it for a few hours to make sure the glue cured properly. It's fairly secure now, and you can hardly tell it was broken at all (it's the hip turned towards the camera in pic related). No problems popping it back on to the ball joint, and no issues with transforming him either, but I'm still going to be handling him with baby gloves from now on.

The worst thing is that I feel bad I am even complaining about it. Every single picture I've seen of this character, I haven't seen a single chip. That includes people from here, Twitter, YouTube, TFW, anywhere. I am the only one getting QC issues on this guy and it makes me want to die. It's not a huge deal because I'm sure I have a color match for the gold, but it still bothers me. I've had to return Armada Prime like 5 times to get one that's passable and then I learned he had QC issues that I didn't notice at first so now I'm fucked.

My Animated Bumblebee has weird spray on his windshield and a cracked clear plastic joint (to be fair it doesn't look like it's going to break off, looks to be damaged in manufacturing).

Tigerhawk had a soft ratchet just stop working and his head joint is so loose.

TM2 Megatron has all kinds of weird shit like mangled gear teeth in his ratchets and weak ball joints for the neck and tail of the dragon. I mean like I applied a little pressure after trying to get his claws to fit in his chest and the tail broke right off his robot head.

The new Cybertron Starscream you have to watch his needle nose from the jet mode in robot mode because the side with the tab on it doesn't fully make the clearance under his foot so some of the paint on it will rub off if you're not paying attention. Luckily I think his paint is just plain old Navy Blue so I can fix it sometime, but why the hell would they make this out of grey plastic and not just solid blue?

It sucks because I love these designs and engineering but their QC is so bad and ruins the hobby for me.

Hasbro has also mastered a similar dark art where they make everything so its never quite perfect. Always lacking in some area so you youre yearning for a new one the second you get the one you wanted. On that note, I tracked down the SS 102 Optimus I was waxing and waining about earlier in the thread. This figure, being a extensive retool of SS 38, has to be the single craziest retool of all time. Its hard to believe it comes from the bones of the same figure. It kind of makes you wonder the why and how behind the scenes of why the fuck this happened this way because this figure is the biggest lateral movement of all time. It is so much better than 38 in many ways and is massively inferior in others.

Yep, the designers went on record saying they ran out of budget 9/10 of the way through. There are several areas of the figure you can see they wanted to do things they werent able to. Particularly a double hip, butterfly joints and the joints to clean up the alt mode rear end. Also I imagine he is that ugly light grey plastic because they had to cheap out on that too. Its a shame they didnt just jam him into leader class like Primal and do him right bc he feels unfinished. But also you can see the designer did what they could with what they were given.

The bright side for Tigerhawk is that it doesn't make him loose enough for him to fall over or anything, but the downside is that I cannot replicate it on the other side. So now he has to just sit pretty. Not gonna bother buying another one because I already put the gap fillers in him and they ain't coming out.

But yeah, I have some shitty luck. Every time I find a defect I have to go to my wife and ask if she would be bothered by something like that and usually it's "no". Basically have to ask her if it's autism on my part or if I should be actually angry.

I got Cybertron Starscream today due to fomo alone. I have zero attachment to the character, just looks like a sick toy. You guys made me want him. Also I remember wanting the maketoys one back in the day. I hope he is a fun figure

He is but be mindful of paint chipping on his forearms and the needle nose thing in robot mode.

Forearms - the gun handle/grip is short so the plastic of that comes in contact with his forearms, so it can chip or rub off like mine.

Needle nose half - The half with the tab on my copy pushed against the joint in his foot, pushing it out just barely over where the foot structure makes contact with a surface. Rubbed some paint off of mine because I didn't notice in him. Easy fix is to just trim or sand the tab a little bit until it fits flush like the tab-insert side for comparison.

I know I'm being autistic, but I just want people to know about these issues.

I was legitimately aware of both things being possible and it still happened. I would only push the gun in a certain amount and the one time it somehow went in all the way, it rotated because the hand doesn't hold it tight and it scratched it.

The foot was something I thought was possible, but might be my fault because I was sort of sliding him around on a fake wood surface. Still, they should have molded those pieces into the blue plastic sprue.

On another note, after some brief mechanical dissection, Brimstone (reptile) finally decided to show his face! I took out a few screws, nothing happened, and then decided to put them back in and re-tighten. I heard a click and up pops his head? Am satisfied, but perplexed.

Starscream has a pretty simple construction compared to sandstorm. Sandstorm has a way higher piece and metal pin count, is way denser (thusly also heavier), has a whole mold dedicated just for the rubber tires, a whole ass whinch, very complex engineering, etc.

Sandstorm is waaaaaay more elaborate figure than starscream is.
