I actually like these kind of displays for small scale or one off stuff. The only problem you have with the stuff like in the OP is you can't really pose them dynamically.

You used to be able to get these cheaply at Bed Bath and Beyond.

I would check to see if IKEA makes them as that would save you money, even if you have to get them delivered. And I would go ahead and see if WM or Target sell these.

Finally, I would check out thrift stores for a few weeks before you spend money.
