New week, new arrivals, namely the other half of one order and a second order. The bagged set is the tan/yellow counterpart to the green one from last week; the black-lidded bin is the pirates and skellies set also mentioned last week. The other bucket comes from ViiKONDO, an AliExpress store that comes up routinely when searching for army men sets. They have some nice-looking stuff but for whatever reason they have significant shipping costs relative to most other AE stores. I finally bit the bullet and ordered one of their smaller sets just to see if they're worth it (I really want one of their larger sets with a Scud launcher truck).

Primary reason for getting this set? These two tanks. At a cursory glance they appear to be just another reiteration of the classic Timmee Patton but a closer look reveals that they are in fact an entirely new tank. While the Timmee is essentially an M60, this one is much akin to the M48. I quite enjoy collecting different army men tank variants and these do not disappoint. Not much to say about the armored cars, they're alright. Standard army man in this pic onward for scale, something that will come into consideration in a big way later.

Next up, F-14 for the Tans, F-22 for the Greens. The ships are of greater interest to me, steadily building up a navy to match the other plastic armed forces branches and non-carrier warships have been a pressing need. The one on the right is another almost-Slava class cruiser; left is a bit of a mystery, I'm fairly convinced it's a smaller warship and the main clues from its appearance are VLS hatches forward of the bridge and a helideck at the stern but I haven't found a convincing match for it among the various types with VLS. If anyone has ideas, I'd love to get an ID for it.

The terrain pieces is where the set both shines and stumbles a bit, at least for me. The trees are excellent, the ruined building pieces are a common design but of better quality than typical and the flags are all but broadcasting Chinese wishes for a USA/Russia showdown while they sit back and enjoy the fireworks.

Where these stumble a bit are the barbed wire fences, good quality like the rest but somewhat on the small side, reaching only to our scale trooper's knees. This is something that will become even more of an oddity with the the next image. The sandbag walls are alright a letdown for me as they're only one half of a long established sandbag wall design that clips together to form a triangular bunker. These have no clips and are all of the same side and while they can be lined up as a continuous sandbag wall, they could be better.

Last and certainly not least (for obvious reasons), the grunts. While I did have advance warning of their actual size from the listing's photos (including one that outright indicated an average height of 2.7 inches) I had grown accustomed to photoshopped army men sets and didn't pay close attention. These guys, while not the largest army men on the market, certainly dwarf the average soldier by a significant margin. There appears to be 8 distinct poses and they are provided as a random assortment of 10 soldiers for each side - disappointingly I am lacking one of the poses in Green as a result, but oh well.

Interestingly one can see significant inspiration in at least some of the poses from classic army men sets:

The rest likely have similar origins but I'd say they're distinct enough to be considered OC.

Overall I am impressed enough with the quality and interesting new vehicles to potentially eat another high shipping cost to get that Scud truck, we'll see.

Not going to do the army men set as it's identical to the one from last week, other than the soldiers being tan/yellow, the submarines green and the included flags were that of Japan and Madagascar (the other set had Canada and Yemen). I've noticed certain cheap army men sets being packaged with the most random of flags, seems to be a trend in some circles.

Today I've got that pirates and skellies set to show, starting with the various terrain pieces. The best part is of course the large rock skull cavern piece, a must-have for any pirate setting. The leaning palm trees are also nice, though the palm fronds pieces would've been nicer in green. The other plant piece is supposed to sit in the mound piece that's been used forever as stands for flags but isn't a snug fit and tends to fall out easily but no big deal. The rocks are nice and textured, far cry from the typical smooth rocks included with many army men sets; might be hard to tell from pic but the two brown things are campfires. Rounding things out is a little shark of the same plastic as everything else, kind of expected it would be more like the soft plastic animals so that was different.

Moving on to man-made elements we have various ruined wall pieces, a medieval tower, wooden stockade and a couple cheveaux-de-frise. The tower is a design going back to the classic Siege board game (Weapons & Warriors if you're outside Canada); the original had a rubber back mechanism where a shot fired into the window caused the platform above to flip its contents over the battlements. This tower is a single molded piece, with that platform being a separate insert sliding in place.

Rounding out the accessories are a large cage piece, rowboat with oars, two barrels, quartet of treasure chests in three sizes (two that can be opened and shut and containing treasure pieces), a tiny cannon and pile of cannon balls.

The missing yellow pose is no bother as I ordered a pack of additional figures from this set in the same order. The poses are pretty good, a mix of iconic pirate imagery and fighting poses with a great assortment of weapons on display; there's even a female pirate pose.

Those tanks are closer to the much older M26/M46 tank, than the M48. The attempt at a bow MG on the front of the hull is one giveaway.

IIRC Marx toys made a M26 or M46 toy tank in the 50's or 60's.

Been looking up results for Marx tanks and it's consistently coming up with Type-41 (M41) tanks like pic related. Cursory searches haven't pulled up any army men-style M46s so far; the Chinese were likely inspired by the classic Timmee and Marx tanks but I'm still convinced it's an OC.

On the subject of tanks there's a couple ViiKONDO sets featuring the pair in this pic, green is obviously a Tiger I but grey is rather more obscure. Best match seems to be the Japanese Type 3 Chi-Nu, certainly not German as the markings would indicate but this is of little importance to the Chinese manufacturers (other sets feature an Abrams paired with a Type 99, the latter emblazoned with German crosses). Odd choice for an army men tank, might have to get one so my Japanese troops can have an authentic tank for once that isn't a Chinese legos set.

Thats more akin a M46/26 (apparently after it and a T20 had a bit too much to drink) , the M41 light had a single driver's position and a very elongated bustle with stowage.

Anyhow, you might look at one of the other companies from back then, like Aurora or Bergen. There were dozens (if not hundreds) of little shops making all kinds of plastic toys back then, and that odd take on the early Patton looks VERY familiar. I just can't place it.

Agreed. They even tried to reproduce the horizontal spring tube in the suspension, and then amusingly decided that was good enough for the pseudo-Tiger as well.

Certainly possible there's a precedent for the Chinese M46, was the first time I'd ever seen it myself and until it arrived I was largely expecting it to be the Timmee M48 with an OC turret, hadn't looked closely enough at the return roller count or other details. Wouldn't have been the first time, the Walmart army men bucket currently in circulation has a near-copy of the Timmee M60 with notable differences to the turret.

I believe the tanks are marketed as having a pull-back play feature so they likely went with one design to save on costs.

Against the odds both craft of Alpha Team make their hard landings successfully, though both VTOLs will likely never fly again. Bravo Team's status is unknown - strict radio silence except in case of dire emergency is the order of the day. Each tiltrotor disgorges a 15-man squad of hardbitten Green special forces, among the very best warfighters the Greens can muster. Quickly and wordlessly they form up set course for their one and only objective, just a few klicks away.

As the Grey air defences in the region prevented any detailed aerial recon the mission planning relied heavily on known Grey battle doctrine and operational behaviour - Greys are notoriously rigid and unchanging in their ways. Alpha Team's captain expected few surprises and this was largely the case; a pair of missile launcher trucks at the center with a command post bunker to one side; a crescent of strongpoints facing the likely directions of enemy attacks; stocks of missile reloads at the rear. What was not so expected was the presence of a giant, towering over his fellow Greys as he scanned around the area anything suspicious. Of even more concern were a pair of Little Bird helicopter gunships parked on the side of the base opposite to their starting point. If one or both managed to get airborne the platoon was as good as dead.

Relatively few Grey troops had been observed manning the strongpoints or patrolling the base perimeter but the captain was all too aware of the Greys' preference for underground barracks with camouflaged entrances - an entire battalion could be hidden under their feet and he would never know it until they started pouring out like a horde of angry ants.

With only 30 men available, no possibility of reinforcements or any other kind of support the captain calmly deployed his platoon for battle.

By a stroke of luck the Elite Force unit found itself in the one corner of the base where Grey defences were weakest - a single soldier patrolling an otherwise open vehicle park. One third of the platoon is arrayed in front of this point; another third is detailed to make a long flanking run through the tall grass behind the outpost and make their attack near the helicopter landing zone opposite; most of the remaining troops take position to secure their left flank. There are no reserves, save for the three-man recon unit still on overwatch but ready to join the fray where needed.

The captain places his two mortars behind the main line of attack and directs them to target the helicopters. He knows the outflanking unit will likely be discovered as it forces its way through the thick wilderness towards their objective. Watching the Grey giant as he turns to sweep his binoculars across the back of the base, the captain gives his waiting mortarmen the nod: fire for effect.

Ultimately it comes down to whether you personally feel it's worth the asking price. After Canada somehow beat Venezuela in the Copa America quarterfinals the other night I finally decided to pull the trigger and order this set >>11055513 mostly for the two large green vehicles, at 70 maplebucks it's definitely overpaying but I've built so much of my plastic armed forces on the cheap it's an outlier. Every set in pic put together cost about the same at the time; army men in general has always been a pretty cheap hobby so splurging a bit on a couple good-quality vehicles isn't that tough to swallow sometimes. I don't have any of that classic armored car myself that I remember, once I can get at my extra-large tote full of tanks and stuff I'll confirm that.

Been thinking of going that route myself, there's a couple other things I want to get from the site and it's been a few years since the last time I ordered from them, mostly cuz shipping to Canada sucks. Not fond of the wide axle but depending on how rightly the wheels are on the metal rods one could presumably pull one off, snip the rod down and reinsert.

This map has been in use for years, though the illustrations on the outer edges seem to change depending on the manufacturer; the last couple sets had an F-15 in the top left corner in apparent blue stripe "aggressor" camo, whereas this set's maps have the YF-19 from Macross Plus. Still convinced the bottom right tank is from 40k but I haven't looked it up yet.

Ok found it, yeah it's a Baneblade. Unfortunately none are provided with the set - it's an (almost) all-infantry affair, with a few guys on horseback being the exceptions. The set appears intended to include two each of the 11 poses in green and tan - I say intended as the first bag I opened was missing one tan kneeling guy with pistol pose. No big deal, though a green version of that pose had a broken pistol hand that's been set right with some superglue.

I recognized a couple of the poses in the store listing as being the same as some from a set of painted Russian soldiers I got years ago, one of the reasons I ordered enough to form a couple battalions (my plastic armed forces are sorely lacking in Russians). These armies turned out to be rather more international than expected, with two poses coming from the above-mentioned Russian army, five from a German army (both originally by Italieri) and the remaining four currently unknown.

The guy waving his PPSh-41 over his head and the charging dude with SVT-40 are the Russians; mortar, both machine-gunners, panzerschrecker and dude with assault-style rifle are Germans (it's in fact an StG 44, nearly devoid of detail in this rendition); the mounted officer, kneeling rifleman and pistolman and standing hooded fellow have avoided identification thus far. I swear I've seen the pistol guy but can't place it; the two rifleman have large packs on their backs and appear dressed for cold weather warfare but this hasn't been enough of a lead.

Detailing is fairly limited and the mix of armies makes them an odd bunch but the plastic quality is fairly good, very rigid and aside the one snapped wrist there were any other breaks in the bag I opened. Two more battalions for the order of battle and I believe they will both be designated as Russian units, with the "Germans" explained away as using captured gear. Still a long way from anything like a proper Russian army (going from a single battalion to three) and the cost of acquiring more in significant numbers is prohibitive, but it'll do.

The giant had barely begun his sweep of the eastern quadrant of the base when the first rounds dropped square on the helipad area. The opening salvo blew the main rotor off one and tipped the other on its side; a second and third served to finish off both flying machines as well as killing a nearby patrolling trooper. For a brief moment across the outpost the garrison seemed paralyzed by the sudden violence.

An officer in the command post bunker has barely enough time to register that they are under attack when a marksman's bullet shatters his skull, his lifeless corpse falling among the comm stations and central control units. Across the base survivors of the initial onslaught start to pull themselves together and return fire towards the source of their unexpected miseries.

All around the base similar apparitions take place as furious Greys scramble up out of their underground barracks and try to organize themselves into a proper defense. The Green flanking unit continues to press through the thick grass, a few of their number pausing to give covering fire across the base as the main force moves into the vehicle park.

At the outer edge of the ruined helipad and gunships a Grey mortarman struggles to reorient his portable artillery. Caught facing the entirely wrong direction at the outset of battle, by a small miracle he was just outside the blast radius of the Green strike, further shielded by the body of a late fellow trooper who happened to be passing by at just the wrong moment.

His heavy weapon finally turned around, the giant bellows out a range and bearing, calling for a shrapnel round. Ignoring the random explosions of rockets and minigun rounds cooking off on the burning helicopters the Grey mortarman carefully lays his weapon, dropping the heavy shell down the tube and ducking to cover his ears mere seconds ahead of the Green flanking force's arrival to his left...

The main reason I ordered two of this set was the pile of tan accessories, fairly uncommon relative to green stuff. Of particular note is the Hawk SAM launcher and stationary gun emplacement and the two buildings. The green soldier for scale in this and following pics is not from the actual soldiers included in the set, for reasons that will be clarified later.

More great tan accessories with four different styles of sandbag piece and the very common ruined walls pieces. Even more notable to me are the four sections of barbed wire, each piece considerably wider than the standard and including pieces on each end so they can connected together.

This set sold itself to me on the basis of its accessories more than anything and it hasn't disappointed, though the selection is eclectic to put it mildly - a rock cave entrance with swinging gate more in keeping with a fantasy or pirate setting, a medieval tower identical to the one here >>11056218 save for the camo scheme, and a more appropriate (though comically short) guard tower. The "stepped pyramid" piece is unusual, reminiscent of the kind of staircases in front of large government or religious edifices.

Ground vehicles are modest in both size and number for this set - four small tanks using the same hull and two each of two different turrets. The rounded turret with single barrel appears to be based on the M60 Patton's but makes the resulting tank appear more like a BMP-type (to me anyway). The action figure-sized weapons are typical of many such Chinese sets these days - some include a few figures too - have seen a few sets with "artillery positions" in the form of the classic U-bunker here >>11067139 mounting a massive Franchi SPAS-12 for a "cannon".

Last and somewhat least, the fighting men themselves. A reprint of the classic Timmee Vietnam soldiers derivative set (arguably a classic in its own right by now) but one of the weaker takes I've encountered. For one the soldiers are all noticeably smaller than their more standard-sized brother, though less apparent in pic than in real life. Many of the soldiers are a little bit off; the mortarmen are leaning sideways a bit, the green guy at center facing his bigger counterpart seems to be recoiling in horror and the soldiers in general are lacking even more detail than their source material.

Two of each pose in green and tan were included for balance, at odds with the vehicle and accessory inventory but not unexpected. Wanted to highlight this pose in particular, joined by an original version for comparison. Ordinarily I would be less than appreciative of the moulding fail (especially the guy first from right) but having shooting poses aiming downwards fits nicely with some of the buildings provided. When I ordered this set back in June it was 35 maplebucks a pop so I got two of them; said they would ship anytime between beginning of July and early August. Checked the listing and the set has gone up to 50 with very few left, guess it was too good a deal to last for long.

Hearing the grim news, the Elite Force captain knows his operation is on the verge of catastrophe. He keys the radio, this time to direct the flanking squad on the other side of the base, upon whose shoulders the outcome of the assault now rests.

Epilogue:
The destruction of the Grey WMD bases proved to be the turning point of the war. Deprived of their superweapons and their advanced fortifications nearly cut off from support, the Greys pulled out of all the Green and Tan territory their blitzkrieg had conquered earlier in the year. Throughout the land of the Greens, rejoicing over a tremendous victory rings through the city streets. Screens at every square and in every entertainment centre play scenes of triumphant Green armies non-stop; scenes such as this glorious full-scale assault towards the off-screen enemy, ground attack jets screaming overhead to flush out their nests with rockets and napalm.

However, by and large the Green citizens are blissfully unaware of certain stark realities behind the glamour of propaganda films...

Largely downplayed or outright omitted from the victorious proclamations across Green lands is the tremendous cost of the campaign. The offensive against the Grey fortified line saw the decimation of many units, some of which suffered the ignominy of routing before the enemy's counter-attack. Losses in armor were heavy, including the crippling of a rare superheavy tank that will be out of commission for some time. Also heavy were losses in aircraft of all types, the bulk during the diversionary air battle coinciding with the offensive and special operations to neutralize the Grey WMDs.

That last component resulted in some of the worst losses to the Green cause: an entire company of Elite Force soldiers wiped out when forced to detonate the enemy nukes, turning large swathes of formerly Tan territory into irradiated craters. The slight silver lining to this desperate action is the radioactive buffer zone now established in the region to deter future military incursions for years to come.

With heavy hearts, Green high command ordered a general withdrawal from much of the territory won from the Tans over the spring offensives, sowing mines and other traps in their wake as the columns stream rearwards, to the protection of great fortified lines.

With a new battle map, more like a work of art meets a mid-level photoshopper. Someone pulled a selection of war paintings (feel like the Hawker Typhoons versus German armored column in top left is fairly well-known), edited in various other things such as that one IS-2 repeated a couple times and the random gun crew to the right of the Tiger (minus their gun lol) and called it a day. The turn-of-the-century farming scene is an odd one but charming in its own way.

Haven't been able to conclusively link the missile truck with a real-world counterpart but I presume it to be based on a Chinese design. Strengthening this assumption is the other vehicle, a WZ-551 6x6 mounting a quad-launcher of HQ-7 SAMs (Chinese knock-offs of the French Crotale). Interestingly this combination does not appear to exist in real life, suggesting the missile truck could also be an amalgamation or otherwise altered design.

The remainder of the set's ground vehicles are fairly common in sets like these, the notable exception being of course the M46 much discussed earlier in the thread. Don't believe I've got that AAV in tan before; the Humvee and VBL are the same ones as here >>11055437.

The naval component is limited to a trio of units, the two warships also seen before in the M46 set. The speedboat isn't new but is a better version than typically encountered.

Fixed-wing aircraft include the F-14 and F-22 from the other set and a quartet of smaller colorful jets: the two on the left are reasonably faithful representations of a Sukhoi-27/35 and MiG-29 while the others are somewhat cartoonish and harder to nail down - green seems to be an Su-30 while blue has a strong resemblance to a JL-9.

Air power is rounded off with a pair of helos, notably a big black Apache that was a secondary selling point for me. Contrary to its markings this is not an AH-64D Longbow, given the absence of said Longbow radar dome atop the main rotor mast. The small tan copter is fairly ubiquitous in army men playsets.

The quartet of trees is always greatly appreciated; plastic forests can end up rather homogeneous and two-dimensional but a few of these can really break up the monotony. The rest of the accessories are pretty standard, though the undersized barbed wire and low-effort sandbag walls could be better.

Interestingly the two armies in the set came packaged in their own little baggies, presumably to keep them from fighting during their cross-Pacific journey. The prominent Russian and American flags I'm noticing in several of these sets makes me wonder if the Chinese are literally trying to play their two rivals against each other...

This one was a bit of a disappointment, though it made up for it in other areas. The listing photos showed the big armored car (a WZ-550 4x4) with turret in blue; both sets came with green ones. This was a let-down as I specifically ordered this set for the blue armored cars so my modest blue armies could have a couple vehicles to truly call their own. Didn't bother to raise it with the seller, probably had the usual "final product may differ" disclaimer somewhere and they've grown on me some.

The other armored fighting vehicle included is a weird one, but in a good way. It matches well with the chunky twin-barrelled tanks I've got a few of, both in the coloration/camo pattern and the fanciful details - this thing has a pair of missiles molded on top of the turret, another on one side and four shells at the back. It's a chonker of an AFV in its own right, feels more like a Bradley with a shrunk-down and modded MBT turret swapped in.

The defensive structures more than made up for the color disappointment, already put them to good use in the Greys arc epilogue above heh. Many sets on the market feature one or more of those pillboxes but this is the first time I've picked up a few and they're quite good. Three different pieces of barbed wire and a signpost are nice details; the large "artillery" emplacement is that heavily scaled up M2 machine gun seen in a previous set. The radar with consoles piece would've come in handy for the Grey WMD base, oh well.

Something of a trend with these sets, the soldiers end up being last and least. Cheaply made with molds significantly removed from their original versions, you get a dozen poses, two of each in each color. The poses themselves are a hodgepodge from multiple sets, can't be arsed to ID them all but the Matchbox US Infantry and New Ray SWAT sets are among them.

Touching a bit more on the eclectic assortment of soldiers in the armies provided it's by no means the worst offender. In my plastic order of battle there are units designated "schizo" due to them being all over the place, both in time periods and factions brought together. Pic is typical of such armies: WW2, Cold War and more modern figures from the German Afrika Korps, British Army, US Army (WW2, Cold War and modern) and even a few SWAT dudes, brought to you originally by Airfix, Matchbox, New Ray and others. For those who wage war purely based on color this is of no concern of course; personally I prefer consistency in the ranks in most cases.
