Merry Christmas /biog/. I only started posting recently, as my passion only just re-sparkled with the new sets.
I still remember getting Rahis in 2001, the Exo-Toa and the Bahrag in 2002, Jaller, Takua, Takanuva and Makuta in 2003, Nidhiki Krekka and Dume in 2004 for Christmas. It has become a tradition for me, couldn't stop getting some sets this year.

Sup /biog/, how was everyone's Christmas haul. I didn't get my bionicle stuff yet because only my grandma still buys me Legos and other non adult stuff, but she said she'd get me umarak and possibly another figure when they release, so there's that. Little bro got general grevious and I had to build it for him for the most part, so I got to mess with that sweet ccbs build without having to buy an expensive set from a non bionicle property, so my autism was satisfied. I definitely need to get some of those double socket joints for moccing though. I'm on my way to my last Christmas celebration with my uncle and other grandma, and by the end I'll probably have enough cash to spare enough for 4-5 of the new sets

I got some bretty gud loot. Skull Warrior to finish up my 2015 collection, and Darth Vader for that Star Wars thrill. Dad also got me a $200 Amazon gift card, so I'm currently deciding what I want to get. Mom also gave me $40, which'll help with shipping.

Currently, my list is:

All of series 6 Mixels ($45)
Umarak ($20)
Earth set ($30)
Fire set ($30)
Ice, Water, Jungle, Stone sets ($25 ea)

Which is 225. Cut Ice, Stone, and Water to bring cost down to 150, then there's just enough room for Takara legends Blackarachnia, since I really want her.

Shame about not getting Millenium Falcon or Devastator, but hopefully they'll be the kick in the pants I need to get a job and actually acquire more than $20 a month. (I'm in college classes while living at home for those NEET bucks.

Does anyone have instructions for the Onua/protector combiner in pic related?

Also does anyone know how to unlock the Onua/Kopaka combiners on their opposite platforms (onua on android and kopaka on iPhone) or how acquiring extra pieces works?

Didn't actually get any Bionicles - only toy I got period was the Granite Slizer - but I also got some money, so more than likely I'll pick some stuff up. Probably the Star Wars Rey and/or Poe Dameron, then maybe Pohatu. That way I can use his chestpiece and Rey's parts to make a robotic desert soldier (seriously though why does no one mention the fact that Pohatu has digital desert camo on his chestpiece like what the actual fuck that's so random but awesome).

My TRU is selling the last years toa for $13 CAD, I'm not interested in any other than Gali and Onua (and I got them when they came out), but are there any good ones purely for parts?

The ad was vague, showing a picture of Gali but it says "collect all 6!" and it doesn't specify if the larger toa are the same price since they're supposed to cost more.

On the fence about Phasma, though. She mostly looks good, but the printed damage on that helmet ruins it.

It's a good thing Gali has silver and trans light blue armor bits I can use to replace them. Real shame that Kopaka is basically a 15 dollar set is disguise though. For shame Lego, for shame.

He's $30 in my country, the small toa are $20 dollars here, and the creatures $15, so I dont see how Kopaka is disguising his value at all when he comes in a set that is an even better value than getting a small toa and a creature.

Kopaka is really a sorta halfway point between the 15 and 20 dollar sets, with a more complex shoulder build, but not the wider slightly more complex torso build of Tahu and Onua.

Melum isnt as shit as he's given credit for, since he has a function that is a bit more complex and reasonable than Teraks.

You can't just say the set has bad value after removing a whole part of the set. It's basically like 2015, six 10 dollar sets, four 15 dollar sets, and three 20 dollar sets, but they combined one of the 10 and one of the 15 dollar sets together in order to slightly buff out the 15 dollar set at the cost of a slightly less complex 10 dollar set (as Kopaka was a 20 dollar set in 2015 so they probably felt they had to make him appear more substantial alongside Tahu and Onua, who were sure picks for keeping full 20 dollar status due to their size / iconic nature.

This means Umarak got to be the 20 dollar set he needed to be, and the negative side effects on Kopaka's figure are pretty low, so I consider everything forgiven. (this isnt even getting into how I save 5 bucks in buying the set vs. the two seperate figures as that isnt applicable in the US)

You've got some pretty solid points. I might just consider buying the set if it's actually that good. Still VERY disappointed in the parts count and lack of shadow trap (ESPECIALLY considering you can see them in the back of the boxart), but at least I can Bricklink some of those later.

I will agree about the shadow trap thing. I feel like the set should have included one, sure you can have six traps in total via Umarak, but Umarak looks really bare after having the trap made, and I would have liked to have seen an Ice-themed trap.

Onua is just a far better set than all the other Toa, who are more or less comparable. His build is much cleaner, his color-scheme is unique but works out really well, his weapon is really creative, a one-of-a-kind hammer-blaster combo. Also his unity-form with Terak works much better than that of the other Toa. Even his feet are unique. What's up with this? Are the designers telling us something like; 'Yeah, we can design much better sets than we usually do, for the same price, but we won't. We just did it this one time, just to prove that we can. Fuck you. You'll buy our usual shit anyway.'

Or did Lego hire some genius for the design team for Bionicle, who just designed Onua?

Onua 2016 just has a certain appeal to him, a lot of people love him, Im personally not the biggest fan. He definitely has the most coherent design this year though. I feel like a big part of the appeal is that he also gets a really nice weapon in that big blaster hammer drill thing, which is something only made possible through his 20 dollar price tag. I just dont feel like he is objectively the best, but rather just subjectively appeals to a lot of people.

As I said, its mostly a subjective thing, I'm personally not a fan of how the bottom part of his mask looks, and his legs just seem a bit off to me personally.

My favorite Toa this year are Tahu and Lewa, the first of which is generally disliked by most all the reviewers so far, though my favorite set this year is Umarak.

I tried the clownshoe feet and it just... Well it didn't work at all. Gali 2015 needs them for her flippers, but there's not really a reason to use them again seeing as onua has different feet too.

Personally I'm not a big fan of the crystal, I would've sticked with just grey and tan, and I would recommend giving a little bit of length to the tail so he could point it forward. Overall though, I'm really liking what you're doing with these, can't wait to see which you build next, but I'm hoping for City/Turbo.

This look a helluva lot better. I would ditch the normal trans blue for trans light blue or dark azure or something, but this looks a million times better than the set imo.

I dont think anyone has done it yet, but it should be easy enough to implement. Only issue is that there isnt any way to do it using the old gearbox piece that doesnt make the arms stick waaaaay too far behind the head like the 2015 sets.

Yeah the color was kind of a mess honestly. The gold they started using with Takanuva was so good, I really wish it'd been used earlier. Still satisfies my autism to have the masks though.

I've said it before, and i'll say it again. More droids. Given how spectacular Grievous is, and provided he's the standard, then I want them to do more. The CCBS aesthetic just works way better with robots than it does with humans.

Umarak has no creature of his own - his gimmick is currently that he traps and usurps the Uniters' creatures. HOWEVER, what if Lava Beast, Quake Beast and Storm Beast are all designed to pair up with him - in both his Hunter and Destroyer forms?

I thought about this when someone in this thread pondered why Ketar's vorox armor is in dark tan. They said something along the lines of: "are they going to use a load of them on Quake Beast?" Well, I think so. I think each of the Summer beasts will have a color which is present on Umarak's body, as well as his secondary colour of trans-bright green:

Lava Beast: Dark Red/Trans-Green (spikes)
Storm Beast: Black/Trans-Green (body)
Quake Beast: Dark Tan/Trans-Green (horns)

-and maybe, if we're super lucky, Umarak the Destroyer will feature the ability to unite with all three at once. Maybe one forms wings, one forms a second pair of arms and the third forms hind legs?

No offence mate, but I personally think the original Slizer heads were part of their iconic 'look'. As good as your brickbuilt heads are, I'm not immediately reminded of Slizers when I look at them. You can take away the throwbot arm or the heads, not both.

After seeing the skull squad early concept pics I can't help but wonder how come the colour theory-aware /biog/ hasn't made any mocs taking visual elements from pic related.
For example, top left.

-Purple
-Lime green
-Dark green
-A few spikes
-Green skull spider or maybe glatorian Gresh helmet
-Black as a neutral colour

And top right

-Light blue
-Sand blue
-Metru blue
-Light green (like Chi Cragger's hands and bones)
-Blue skull spider
-silver as a neutral colour

I'd make a few myself but I don't have enough pieces in these colours or any good moc ideas atm.

And badassness too. From concept art to prototypes I've seen various great ideas over the years get emasculated or shot down completely. It's like someone's sabotaging the products either to keep them from deviating visually from the company's other products (and therefore become unrecognizable), too "serious/violent", or simply to not raise the consumers' standards and expectations too high to uphold.
I doubt it's because test groups showed a preference to more bland ideas and aesthetics. Kids love complex, spiky and badass things. If a child had to chose between Fisher Price and a McFarlane, it'd go for Spawn.

I can actually understand why some of these things happen just because TLG has a very serious policy of not depicting or encouraging violence in their products; it's why most of the guns that aren't lasers look really cartoony and why they don't produce any war sets or sets with soldiers, excluding medieval themes. As for the sets not being covered in spikes, it's probably also partially a safety thing; they probably aren't fond of marketing toys that could (potentially) hurt children, were play to get too rough. That's also the reason why all the blade parts have slightly rounded tips and most of the spike parts are soft.

It's all really unfortunate, but them's the breaks when it comes to making sets compatible for 6-14 year old kids. Really, it's a miracle a line this outwardly violent can be made by TLG in the first place.

Even so the 2015 Toa look WAYY better than the 2016 ones as a group. You can say what you want about their design flaws, but aesthetically the 2015 are the best looking group of sets, sharing several key functions/pieces while each being easily distinguishable just from outline.

I miss the back gear boxes of the 2015 line. Fuck however says shoulders don't start that far back; it's far better than the super flat dolls we got for the first CCBS figures.

Try and tell me you fuckers didn't like the gearboxes. Fuck, I opened and built Tahu in my car in a dark parking lot not far from the store, and I was so fucking happy with the gearbox- the duality of function and articulation it had. It was home, and I loved every second of it.

As a 90s kid I can't help but feel insulted and saddened by the range of products and media marketed to today's kids. Not because they don't fit my adult standards or muh nostalgia mind you. We grew up with Inhumanoids, G.I. JOE, Exo Squad, Skeleton Warriors, transformers etc. We watched people get hurt and put in life-threatening situations or worse. Our toys had guns and sharp points. Our houses were childproofed. Now look at things. Parents are buying duplo for their five year olds because they are afraid the kids might swallow a brick if it's small enough to put it in it's mouth (system bricks). Cartoons directed at teens only go as far as to have the protagonists destroy mindless drone mooks or fool/arrest sentient rivals through wit. Toys for teens have rounded edges, clipped points and simple shapes. Everything is being playschooled. Stuff for younger ages is being marketed at audiences that have outgrown them already.
Everyone I know near my age had "health hazard" toys with small accessories since they were little and watched shows that'd make present day network censors and soccer moms flip and go bananas.
They never swallowed anything, put out no eyes and grew up to be non-criminal.

If you're aware as a company that your end product needs improvement and you know in what ways then why not fix it instead of lying to potential customers through prettyfied depictions? It really is awful how soft and edgeless things are becoming. And you can really see it affecting the younger generation with how bad people are getting at handling things today. If Tahu looks any good it's because he is tall and so his shoulders doesn't seem to stick out that much. His overall bulk and shoulderpads help too. The others were greatly hindered by the gearbox, either visually or physically. The shoulders were too far back to ignore, the piece took up product cost per set that could had gone towards more pieces, the yellow gears disrupted some colour schemes and the gearpieces looked like they were salvaged from a steampunk submersible. So fuck you too.
We can agree on the comment about the early CCBS sets though. These things were flat and naked from behind like an axe had come down and shaved the armour off their asses. At least LEGO listened to fans and reason and put a foot or a shield to cover some of it. Pity there's no coverage for the back or inside of the limbs. One major downside of CCBS big enough to ruin the system on it's own.

I think, of all the companies to accuse of softening up, TLG should be far from the top of anyone's list. From day one of toy production, they've been consistent in keeping within the barriers of their own rules, which is separate from any adjustment of standards in modern culture.

I hated it too until it popped in my mind that he rolled up his sleeves. Umarak the Destroyer must be pretty powerful indeed to make the toa who could had soloed 2015 (except for the resurrection of Ekimu bit) get serious.

I actually really appreciate the designers' efforts to give the sets more human proportions. But human shoulders are supposed to be roughly on the same axis as the head. Course I'm not bothered because a robot toy intended for children, mostly boys, isn't accurate to muh human anatomy. It's just that it doesn't look good in my eyes, especially in combination with the jutting chest. But like I said, it's more pronounced the smaller a set is. Like Pohatu for example.

Pricepoints would make sense to have three at $25 and three at $20. Kylo Ren, Poe, and Phasma are confirmed at $25, so Finn is likely $20 alongside the confirmed Stormtrooper and probable Rey.

Rey and Finn are definitely the best value from these sets. They both have delicious browns and tans, they both have custom torsos with the gear boxes, Finn has a lightsaber AND a gun while Rey has cloth AND is a chick.

Even more so since one of the promotional material spoiled that unity-masks aren't complete unless there's a creature on top of it. And despite being at least partially mechanical, unless Toa get full control of the creature they may have some difficulty with just walking around.

Yeah, it's a fucking shame for the torso pieces, since 2015's were demonstrably better in every way. Fuck, even Pohatu with just replaced torso is leagues better.

What's worse is that I actually like the idea of the new torso bone with the rotating hips. Maybe if they release a shortened version and pair it with the Star Wars neck/gearbox, we'll have figures with articulation, function, and aesthetic?

When I was younger here in Italy there would always be a whole section in the lego one dedicated to bionicles, you always knew where to go and they never sold out. Now some shops don't even get every set, just the most popular ones (I think of Tahu and Kopaka compared to other toas) and I had to check more than one to find what I wanted.

I've seen the 2015 winter sets at full price during August while the store was even doing a big sale on all toys. Honestly not sure if that says anything about them doing well, we haven't had any kind of advertisement for them over here at least.

Really hard to say, the only way we could really know is if we had someone here who worked at a toy store and had any information on how often they need to restock the sets.

The sets were selling out at the start of the year thanks to us autists, but I really have no idea how well they are doing in terms of long term sales to kids, especially since I only ever visit the lego store to grab sets within the first hour of it opening so I really never see other people there.

Its hard to say if Journey to One is a result of poor sales or good ones, and its also hard to even say what it will be in the first place (we may all be hyping ourselves up for disappointment).

All that matters to me is that I like the new sets, and the 2016 ones even more than last years despite what seems to be the general consensus elsewhere. Even if the line only lasts three years I will be happy to have gotten some neat sets out of it.

Not really, I imagine they just liked the design of it as standard but realized it would be a good idea to actually put a face on the mask to line up with the actual head piece, so they just ended up adding that two-mode function thing.

I'm sure the mask design team back in those days thought things through and went through many iterations until they had exactly what they wanted for a mask. This is especially true when they were designing it for the main villain of the series. Hard to say what influenced their decisions.

I haven't got my camera right now, but I basically swapped the Rahkshi armour and Nuva armour for silver and gold ones, respectively. The gold Mask of Shadows came with one of the 2005 playsets. It was supposed to be some kind of Visorak.

I mean in general I think that elemental naming themes are interesting.

For example Fire names have to be bold and brash, like fire. Narmoto fits this, and I feel Agarak fits as well.

Water names have to be smooth and flow nicely. Kivoda definitely fits, and Owa is kind of bottom of the barrel but fits.

Jungle names are wild and organic, resembling insects in concept. Vizuna and Kerato are both names that evoke this.

Ice names are either sharp and smart as an icicle or large and blunt like a glacier. Izotor sounds like a smart person name, and Mamuk has to be ice for the Mammoth tie in.

Earth names more than any have to be solid. We're talking names you could easily sleep on. Korgot fits this, and Epolim as well.

Stone names have to be, well, like rocks. Some are jagged and spiky while others are weathered and rounded, but all of them are impossible to ignore. A Stone name will poke you in the side until you acknowledge it. Nilkuu and Udapo are both like this.

G2 seems closer to the second era so far. You can argue Kulta sounds similar to Skull, but it's not as blatant as stuff like Mantax or Chirox. I'm satisfied with what we got so far, these new names included.

Kerato is earth and has two swords and is good at MMOs

Mamuk was a Killer whale in captivity in Texas until it's death in 1986, Orca's are aquatic, Mamuk was the protector of water.

Googling Owa gives me pictures of a monkey, so Owa was protector of Jungle.

Epolim is protector of ice by default.

Hard to say what they will do with that, will the G2 mask of time (assuming we ever actually see it) look like a full mask on its own? Will we also get a lower half in G2 style? will they release a new head piece that allows you to connect the old Vahi to the front and connect the top half via the side clips? I have no idea where they are going with this assuming they follow through.

Here's a fix for Gali.

Take the ratchet part out of the Water Creature's trap, and replace the blavk part with it. Gives Gali more arm mobility and looks slightly less retarded.

Also take my friction extenders off of the feet and put them on the shoulders.

Ill be honest, I'm only about halfway through it, but I would say its a bit better than the first half of the first book (before it started covering animation content). Since the book is only following one group of characters as they explore ruins and discuss lore, its a lot more organized than the last book as well. Dialogue isnt going to win any awards, but its passable for what it is.

And finished. Short, but a lot better than the first book and reminded me of the old side story books of G1. Good amounts of world building I found, though some stuff feels like they just pulled it out of the story bible and forgot to explain what it is, like when it is explained that Ekimu prepared the Prophecy of Heroes after sighting the legendary creatures during the Festival of Masks and seeing it as an omen, but not telling us what a Festival of Masks is.

Also Harvali a cute.

Damn, Uniter Onua's feet SUCK. They were great for the Hero Factory Mechs/possible future Bionicle full robots, but the large Beast feet Master Onua use are so much better. They evoke just the right level of mechanical and organic, and their combo potential with the small Beast feet/Protector feet makes using both that much better.

This book still has a lot of 'said' with but a few exceptions such as 'Harvali murmured" or "Korgot shouted", which is kind of to be expected with the lower reading level of the books. However, i did find that the sentence structure made it a lot less noticeable than the first book, as I only noticed the abundance of said after skimming through it again to answer your question.

Gotta wonder what the authors deal with jungle region is, Vizuna is always getting the spotlight and now we have two named jungle villager characters in Bingzak and Harvali (though Bingzak hardly mattered)
