An unpainted model looks better than a poorly painted model. Especially if it has a variety of colored pieces to compensate for the lack of paint.
And just so you know, the age requirements on the box are for legal safety reasons. I'm sure there are children under ten with the motor skills to assemble a model and the good sense not to eat the pieces, but for legal purposes, if your 7 year old chokes on a piece of plastic, the company can say "hey, it says ages 10 and up on the box". So, there's my answer to that nice little nonsequitur.
