They stay connected pretty well, I know the technic balls are loose af most of the time, but the ones used in this moc have connections tight enough not to make the whole arms fall apart, so unless you're throwing this thing around it's pretty secure.

I could probably give you a few name ideas, if you could give me a few personality traits / backstory quirks that this character may or may not have. When coming up with a name for a fictional thing, I usually prefer to base it somewhat on the character itself, rather than just spewing random ideas out there.

Imagine if we got a 2015 version of that game, complete with that atmospheric ambience and music. Flesh out the island more and shit like that. I'm convinced that MNOG is the only reason most of us stuck around with Bionicle as long as we have, and what kept the series going beyond the first couple years.

I don't know about that but I'm sure it was a big part of it. I don't think something like MNOG could still be done in this era, though, even it the production value was very high. Internet was still being used by not a lot of people and social media was pretty much non-existent, so word of mouth was still very powerful. That culture increased the power of MNOG tenfold because you had no idea what was awaiting you.

Sometimes I think MNOG exemplified how Lego didn't really know what they potentially had on their hands with Bionicle. After all, as good and influential as the game was, lets remember it only came together so well because Lego happened to stumble upon the perfect outsider team to make it, and because they gave them just the right amount of freedom and limitation to flesh out the side characters and culture but let everything else be mysterious. And that was only because Lego put so much faith in the crashed PC game that they let Templar Studios be creative with their little side project. And MNOG's ending and payoff only worked so well because the PC game unexpectedly failed.
It wasn't a pre-calculated thing, Lego didn't plan it to be as good and fulfilling of a game. MNOG was basically happenstance, and look how MNOG II turned out when Templar wasn't granted the same freedom.

I think Lego just lacks actual foresight for its own projects, and what you've said is just further proof of that. Bionicle G1 in general was just a huge unplanned success for them. They lucked out with Ninjago but that's hardly a success since the West will eat up anything with ninjas. And even that one they were about to cancel in 2013 because they couldn't figure out that the line was printing money.

But look at all their IPs in the recent years and you'll see that their success is lukewarm at best (Chima) and an utter disgrace at worst. They remind me of Google, who comes up with a new project almost every day only to see it flop half of the time and move on to the next one, rinse and repeat. But Lego has nowhere as much as money to throw out as Google does.

Sure, they stay afloat thanks to the Mouse and other license stuff but I wonder what they'll do if those ever lose steam.

Which leads us back to G2's mishandling. I don't think it could have been Ninjago-huge, but maybe it could've been as successful as the team originally hoped. People often say Bionicle's original success was a lightning in a bottle that can't be replicated, and that annoys me a lot. It is true that G1 had some considerable advantages for its time, but it's not the full picture.
Like you said, Lego likes to throw shit at the wall today just like back during Bionicle's launch. But it's like they didn't really grasp what made it click with people, and instead of building on that and correcting G1's many mistakes, they again just put Bionicle out there without much thought. I doubt that Lego had a clear understanding of what they were doing even during G1, they more or less rode the tides of its unforeseen smash success, made a few good and bad decisions along the way, but over time they let the line slowly peter out. So really, as much as a lot of us fans bash the lack of direction behind G2, G1 had many of the same issues, a lot of which were on Lego.

I know this is an old topic and there's not much left to say about it anymore. But I just reminded myself how often I've come across this "lightning in a bottle" talking point (maybe not in these threads, but on other sites), and it always seemed like a half-argument to me. Bionicle G1 wasn't successful solely because it came out when it did, it had other things going for it which Lego sadly didn't properly capitalize on. Some other kids' franchises that also seemed like they were products of their time managed to make surprising comebacks despite the odds, because the people behind them knew what to do with them. A shame Bionicle isn't one of those, franchises, and I partially blame Lego for it instead of putting all the blame on circumstances beyond their control.

And the Toa of Stone for the team is done. Decided to do gold for him because I had a shit ton of it laying around. Also the Metru foot covered by his sword got badly chewed up by my dog when I was a kid, so think of it as "battle damage" or something like that.
Will work on the Toa of Ice and Toa of Fire later, just need to get masks for both

pretty neat but a little too much red, it's kind of an eyesore. He never had much red in his color scheme anyway, just on the weapons. I do like how you used it with the torso though, it looks like exposed tissue or marrow or something. If you swap the red parts out for white/black ones on just the limbs I think it would look a lot better.

He said he was going to do a minor tweak that would be almost entirely unnoticable. So it's like 99%. If you compare it to the JtO on screen model, it looks identical. From the eyelid rims, the brow crest, to the chin diamonds, it looks the same. I honestly couldn't guess what he even meant to edit. To me it's perfect. The villager scale on the other hand is very clearly in need of the same update the titan got.

No doubt G2 could've gone much, much better than how it did. The fact that it lasted less than half of HF's run despite a much richer design work behind alone speaks volumes about how badly Lego handled the line. All the good things G2 did were solely because of the talent

It's a bit harder to say about G1 but I agree that you can't reduce its success to a lucky shot. Early 00s culture certainly helped it but it was the talent and creativity of people like Faber and the Templar team that made Bionicle explode in popularity. Later Bionicle dwindling out was a result of a natural decline in a product's lifecycle as well as poor understanding of what the fanbase wanted ("Halo is popular? Surely that means kids don't like magic and melee weapons anymore and that every single character should use a gun!").

Which brings me to another point: sometimes I honestly think Lego's marketing team lives under a rock. They poured so much effort and marketing budget into Chima (Lego.com at one point was completely covered by Chima ads!) that given how big Lego is you would think the line would sell like hotcakes, yet it didn't.
I don't think they quite grasp how complex and rapidly growing pop culture is these days and how much it plays into purchasing habits. That's what G1 managed to become, a cultural phenomenon. They think that producing low budget mobile apps and TV shows is a genius strategy and that it "encourages roleplay" (they use this phrase a lot) but it obviously is not enough to get kids to care about the characters and certainly doesn't secure a line's success.

Bionicle G2 could and should have fit perfectly into modern pop culture, but for that to happen it had to fall into competent hands, which is definitely what didn't happen.

On one hand their almost reluctant approach to popularizing G2 makes sense. Most recent Constraction lines haven't been performing well (unless you're in Russia apparently), so pumping a lot of money into it could backfire. But on the other, what they did wasn't much better. Their held-back marketing and mismanaged storytelling also went to waste.

Comparisons with other toy brands is iffy, but I still don't quite get when Lego doesn't take notes from the likes of Transformers. Hasbro also makes stupid choices (I admit I'm not too familiar with what they're doing these days), but at least they realize the importance of heavy multimedia tie-ins, like comics, cartoons and more story-focused video games. That's what made TFs a success in the first place, since no one cared for the toys before they were given a backstory, a show and comic.
True enough, Lego does have the Ninjago show that's pretty popular (and further raises the question of why they mess up other homegrown story-driven properties), and they're in the movie business too (though out of their three theatrical films, one was partially built on licenses, one was fully a license and the one that was original was a misfire and not particularly faithful to its source material). But why was Bionicle, which most strongly thrives on storytelling and multimedia, not given that treatment? So many of G2's media tie-ins were sloppy, released too late and elusive. As mentioned, Constraction's been slowly failing, so maybe they didn't want to take risks? What you suggested might be more disheartening -- what if they genuinely thought that this was the best they could do? There's a difference between just not making an effort and being legit incompetent and out of touch.

Rewatching the Mnog 01-03 animations. Currently on the Kal ones. Something that caught my attention that always bugged me was the Nuva symbols, and how the Toa's elements are inherently linked to them. However, I thought of something. If the symbols were always in their suvas, and they were simply their elemental symbols, it would make so much more sense. Especially if they could only access the symbol's true power by unlocking the gold kanohi, which draw the most from the symbols, and the gold kanohi did in turn become the Toa's kanohi Nuva. I dunno. Just the addition of this new crutch once the Toa evolved always bugged me.

The Nuva Symbols as well as the Nuva Cube were both crafted in Artakha and teleported onto the island as soon as the Toa Mata transformed. IIRC it was implied the Toa Nuva had too much raw elemental power to contain, hence their power is stored in the Nuva Symbols instead.

On a side note, I'm still eternally salty the Toa Nuva didn't come with Nuva Symbols and the Bahrag didn't include the Nuva Cube.

Rogue One killed any change of Bionicle or CCBS returning.

Jyn Erso primarily, as she did not sell and they blamed that on CCBS rather than her being a shitty character from a bland and forgettable cash grab movie.

The only hope for a future Bionicle theme would be technic as they certainly wont be trying CCBS again - at the moment they are continuing it solely due to a license regarding producing Star Wars sets until Episode 9.

I think it's run its course now. Only reason we had these threads is cuz someone joked that there will be a movie, and it attracted a lot of Bonklefags and nostalgic former fans. And technically there are the old movies and JtO, but not many anons talk about those.
Occasionally Bonkle threads pop up on /v/, /co/, /m/ and /tg/, and of course /trash/. Sometimes they go over bump limit, but that's rare since there isn't much to talk about.

I've also built this one out of regular Gahlok, Kohrak, and Nuhvok, and it ended up being really cool.
I added on the remaining leftover pieces, which was pretty easy to do, unsure why they didn't use them.
Definitely recommend building this one if any of you anons have 3 bohrok lying around and haven't built this kaita before.

I'd almost automatically assume that anything that contains parts from throwbots or roboriders is automatically legit, note that there seems to be some parts from two neoshifters included too.
