They used to be used for an electric eye sensor. When the torsos passed by on a conveyor belt, the sensor would check to see if the torso was facing the right way. If it didn't detect the spot, it would trigger a puff of air that knocked the torso back out of line. This made sure that all the torsos past that point were facing the same direction.

This isn't a horrible set, as such. The piranha is pretty fun and there's a ton of potential for mocing it out, plus dat XXX with triple yellow bewbs. Pretty sure anons can use that last bit.

Well lads, the time has come to clear my cupboards and garage of my old Star Wars Lego.

I have a shit ton of sets, a lot of the early stuff from 1999-2003 or so. All played with as I'm not an autistic collector, but I have a few rare sets like the original Cloud City with the special Boba Fett etc.

Thinking of selling it on Bricklink. Would that be my best option?

Any interest in these sets? Pic has details.

The head could have been so much better, I agree, but I see so much more potential in the hair/helmet piece. Shame that Lego will almost certainly never use it again so we'll never get it in other colors. I'd have been overjoyed for an actual red instead of orange and made myself a glorious red headed cyborg waifig. Alas such shall never come to pass.

While I'll gladly conceal it has been reused, and with different colors, I meant outside of the Lego Ninjago movie sets. Because frankly it wasn't just the colors I was lamenting since, yeah, third party will probably provide. I was more remembering other times when we've seen one-and-done Lego molds. Mostly from licenseshit, sure. The Sakaaran blasters, the armor and guns from the Kryptonian soldiers, etc. I have a hard time seeing this particular piece popping up again outside of TLNM, unlike, say, Barbara Gordon's hair from TLBM. Of course I could very well be wrong, and I'll be glad if that's true too.

The thing with that hairpiece is that what it could even be used as? It's very specific, but not specific enough. You can't really just throw it into a City-set and be done with it, but it's not generic enough to be used in, say, capeshit sets. Except it to only get use in Ninjago and Nexo Knights or such.

Unless Lego magically gets MGS license and decides to half-ass Raiden with it.

That theme does have some cool stuff, but a lot of it looks heavily inspired by world of warcraft. The sets themselves are heavily inspired by previous lego sets. I would love for a good generic fantasy theme with dwarves, elfs, humans, and orcs/goblins/greens. Castle has really struggled to keep up with licensed themes though and lego seems to want/need their original IP themes to be "big bang" themes with TV shows. My hope is that they start making lord of the rings/hobbit sets again the way they have/are making starwars/harry potter/jurassic park stuff that isn't directly movie canon.

Most of this line copies chunks of Elves sets. Also, the late 2000s Castle was pretty much exactly what you're describing, lasted for 3 years, 4-5 if you want to count the Kingdoms theme that followed it but focused more on peasants and farm animals and dropped the fantasy races.

Very little of what Enlighten does is truly "original", their current themes are basically less elaborate pseudo-revival of said castle themes and Alien Conquest/SPIII.

This is an interesting thing at least in terms of weapons. The Kryptonian guns and the Sakaaran ones, but we also had new pistols from The Lone Ranger which to my knowledge haven't been reused elsewhere. I don't know if it's the licensing, like somehow these new elements are considered propriety concepts from whatever movie is being depicted.

Man of Steel sucked but I have to admit the armor was pretty sweet. Someone somewhere has probably used it to make Prometheus Engineers.

Despite early to mid 2000s sets being generally horrid compared to both earlier and later ones, all 3 of the martian mechas aged surprisingly well, especially considering how limited the options for joints were at the time. Overall I think LoM did this better than Exo Force, which did introduce great joints, but half of the sets looked like they only put any thought whatsoever into designing the front. I think the key to having great mecha sets is not making almost everything within a single line a mecha, that was the case with LoM and it seems to be similar with NK or Ninjago ones, which are usually the highlight of their respective waves. The Agents retro sci-fi mecha was a great example, too.

This is almost definitely licensing, it has to also be why you can't order license-exclusive parts - be they prints or molds - directly from Lego. Hard to tell what determined which accessories will be classified as such, though, as there was no such problems with some molds developed for LotR, like the orc sword.

the designs are nice and IMO most of the pieces are indistinguishable from Lego unless you stop to read what's on the studs, I've got a couple brands mixed together at this point.

Enlighten's a definite step down in quality though. Every set I bought has 1-2 pieces that are fucked enough to be annoying. Could be loose hinges, clips that break right away, pic related came with technic bricks with the pin holes sized too large to hold anything.

That's variable too since it ships over regular US postal, which means it is out of Lego's hands (Lego's, Galidor, it's possessive). I think it's a 3-8 day window. Anyway since they don't do tracking with B&P you just sit back and trust in the LeGods to get you your precious bricks in a timely manner.

This means it would take extra time around the holidays. While it isn't active at the moment I have some missing pieces due so I can finally put together the last arm of Macy's mech. Yeah, I see that. Interesting. The minifig torso was probably from one of my younger brothers, maybe even from this set. Pity I just have the body and not that translucent helmet.

What are some themes that are overlooked?

Just bought this Lone Ranger carriage set. No one much cared for the theme for some reason even though it's stuffed with awesome western sets. You can still pick up all the entire line for retail price.

Not entirely true, though close enough if you really want to get them I guess.

As far as underrated themes go, I have always been a fan of the underwater themes. Aquazone is an obvious classic, but the newer themes aren't bad either.

Atlantis had sets with really nice parts. And the more recent Deep Sea Explorers City subtheme had some more realistic underwater sets.

It was an AT-ST but the top cab section is missing. BB-8 hijacks one and the cab gets ripped of while he's driving to reveal to the audience he's piloting it. Shame they don't catually include the cab.

Excellent choice. I had the big temple for Christmas when it first came out (temple of Anubis?)

It was absolutely awesome with the traps and the rotating ruby pedestal.

My buddy came round and went nuts because he'd never seen Lego so awesome.

Spyrius came out as I was starting to enter my dark age, so I only have a couple of the sets and a minifig pack with a couple Spyrius dudes and a Roboforce guy, but I've always loved the Spyrius colors and printed parts.

Huh, guess you're right. Looking at Bricklink, the yellow Roboforce minifig came out three years after that box was released, so I guess my single Roboforce minifig must have originally belonged to one of my younger relatives and gotten mixed in with my stuff at some point during my dark age.

I'm kinda new to this an like the culture in this general, but what I don't understand is why do people complain about the sets not having X or they shouldn't have done Y? Isn't the point of legos to modify them to your liking?

I have experience with tcgs and if you've got money on your mind it's almost never a good idea to buy the sealed product and should instead invest in just buying the singles. Does this same mentality carry over with lego at all? It is generally cheaper to piece together a set than to hunt down the original? i feel at that point you're just paying for the box & instructions. Are there possibly small different such as possibly slight color variations on the original lego pieces in older sets or something?

Basically what's the difference between buying an original older set and just tracking down the individual pieces yourself? Is it mostly just the thought that those separate pieces aren't really the original like a ship of theseus kind of thing?

Yes older sets have few different colors - brown, gray and dark grey, and some pieces were made JUST in those colors.

as for the sealed sets...it depends on the set. It might be cheaper, considering time and money, to just buy the old set instead of tracking down the individual parts, the instructions, the sticker sheet from a dozen different sellers. Then there's the nostalgia factor where somebody replacing some bit of their childhood might want the whole thing. plus I guess some people actually collect sets.

Pretty sure we never got these here in europe, but these sets were really neat. It's like a slightly more slick and late 90's cool continuation of the classic space 6951 Robot Command centre. Some people like to make their own stuff. Some like just building the sets. Some also like having the boxart and instructions of some sets.
I mostly moc, but do a little of all of these. At some point people are going to complain about everything, especially 4chan. Don't mind it too much. The pretty chill atmosphere of these threads is what makes this my favourite place here now.

As other anons mentioned. Some rare or exclusive pieces that belong to one sets can make buying pieces individually more expensive. But this can vary heavily per case. I've bought sets with rare pieces more valuable than i paid for the entire set.

Thanks for the responses. What are some of the "money pieces" in lego? Are there notoriously hard to find pieces? The only one I know is 1x8 sand green blocks from green grocer. I have the original hogwarts set which has the holographic/reflective dumbledore sticker which I imagine goes for a bit. What's a ballpark for the really expensive single pieces?

I don't speak witcher, but that power might just be a picture in the magazine. They include powers to scan and pass them off as a big deal every issue, but have never given a physical lego tile power. I could be wrong since the app doesn't seem to scan the new merlok powers yet and the set boxes aren't too specific about how they will be used. I would be surprised and kinda pissed off if the last power was only available in select countries. The abrupt jutting 90 degree angle of the engine mount really bugged me, and the grille area looked really rough but I couldn't find a build that I liked until last night when I switched from hinge bricks to finger hinges.

So I tried to do a bricklink order for the first time in over a year and when I went to checkout, I got some message about the seller putting me on a stop list. I've never shopped his store before and it wasn't like I was ordering tiny cheap parts only (I had about $8 in parts before shipping), so I have no idea why that happened. There wasn't anything in the terms that I violated either. It put me in a sour mood after finally working up the courage to spend money online just for myself. Fabuland is a good response if you're in Europe or where ever and can get some of the bigger ones. The small ones have charm, but the big ones are overall comfy as frick. That said, other themes are capable of comfy. Most of the structures from classic town are good.

That's because you need to buy the other set. They cut it from the film but the top half of that walker becomes sentient after it merges with Snoke's ghost and rebuilds itself so it can go to Crait and revenge itself against the Resistance and especially BB-8.
