I still remember the Christmas morning when I opened it as a present from my ma. I can't believe she got me this set. One of the few sets I ever fully built at the time and I still miss the days of playing with it.

Not the first lego set I ever got but one of them. I was a huge dinosaur fan as a kid and I remember my parents just gave me this set on a completely random day. We weren't poor and this was a pretty small, cheap set but we didn't really get stuff unless it was a birthday or Christmas so it really was special to just come home from kindergarten and just given a new set. I also used the head from the figure as one of my favorite sigfigs from when I was younger for a long time

I still think the mandibles are too narrow for it to just be the cargo module; also, why not replace the cargo module at some point?

That being said, I love the color scheme, and I can accept that it looks different. It might be the Falcon I get. Maybe.

Also I'm thinking of returning the Fire Mech set I got for Christmas; it doesn't look like it's got just a whole lot of super-useful parts. I'll probably get the dragon instead. Thoughts?

It's an epitome of my mom's coolness. She was out in a big city for 2 days and when she returned, she brought me this.
I saw it at morning but didn't have enough time to even look at it because i had to go to school.
And that whole morning in school felt like some torture because i couldn't think of anything other than this set im going to build when return home.
This set made me a lego fan.

Not gonna lie, all of these designs look good. And I hated the TFA, Rogue One, and Last Jedi sets sparring maybe one or two. I know the general reactions always going to be that these suck or whatever because fuck Disney, but I gotta give credit where credit is due, they all look like neat sets. Even the battlepack speeder that probably won't even be in the movie has a certain sleekness and style to it that typically isn't found in the battlepacks.

Pretty bland. It's just two gray rectangles and the smoothed edges make it all blend together to the eyes. Minifigs look interesting but I need to know more about them

Looks really cool, totally building off of the muscle car motif that Luke's had. Love the colors, love the windshield, new Han looks ballin, his GF looks cute, and the little animal looks like a cool bonus. Definitely the highlight of this collection IMO.
>Imperial Battle Pack
Pretty dumb looking, I feel like the actual speeder looks neat but just doesn't translate into Lego very well, but then again it's a battle pack so I guess you want as small a vehicle as possible. New Trooper designs aren't really anything to write home about, but it's weird to have them with the standard looking Imperial officers.
>Kessel Run Falcon
Obviously the centerpiece to the collection but like everyone and their grandma have already said, it's just another fucking Falcon, and like the fourth one we've gotten in 3 years at that. Colors look nice and I can't wait to get a Donald Glover minifig, I'm sure this won't be the worst Falcon we've ever gotten but I doubt it'll be the best.

Looks like a decent build at a good size, but I'm not seeing anything here that other TIE's haven't already done before. And do we really need FOUR fucking minifigs to go with a single-passenger vehicle?

I don't own any and still not a fan of minidolls in terms of consistency with my collection. But ever since they started doing wackier things than tan and white section of a building with furniture and utensils (wich, don't get me wrong, were often really great sets) they really got on the ball.
I will also always be thankful for the amount of dark purple and magenta early friends presented. The elves and superhero sets now have such cool fucking colours and wacky more characteristic builds holy shit. When they don't do the 'boring american schoolgirl with cheap mall clothes' figures, the minidolls can actually look cool. The Malificent and Mad Harriet look sweet. Batgirl and Ariel too. These themes allow them have more 'attitude' if you don't mind my 90's marketing terms, so now they don't just all default to the standard smile all minidolls had up to this point. I don't mind more neutral faces and expressions, but they don't work as well without a more simple and abstract multi-interpretable design the classic yellow smile design pulled off so well.

Haven't had it in hand, but the it uses some substitution parts and techniques per pair of legs. Has some colour variation that i didn't really mind and the bulbous behind some slightly odd shaping. Mind you it is a toyish creator secondary build.
Still 100% functional and cool looking though. The face and general proportions are really convincing looking and of much higher quality than many 'shitty boat' afterthought altbuilds.

it was a fun little build, there's actually a lot of colourful bricks on the inside and a simple mechanism to launch the lava gemstone balls from the top.

everyday i am more excited to move into my new place where i will have a dedicated nook with a desk and lamp and such for my laptop + lego.

the bottom of this build is prone to instability and so normally definitely requires a sturdy flat surface to maintain composure when under stress during the building phase. I managed to work it out alright but it was finnicky and there's a loose brick inside rumbling around which broke off but i can't get to it without dismantling a lot of it.

I do have a desk here in my place but it's got lots of books and stuff on it and right now i can't be fck'd moving them all, might do it tomorrow and then rebuild this volcano + see if I have some other parts to build a bit of a moc, some kinda scene or diorama.

For a while now I have been wondering what anons here think of the baseplates that are sold in general places where you can buy klocki. I see them from time to time and the price, in my area, is around 10 to 15 dollars, which seems quite a lot for just a simple plate of plastic - however, I've not used them in years so I don't know just how important or useful they are. Do you anons have any thoughts on them?

My goal is to create a fantasy land with my lego and so far I've collected some good lego to start making it when I get the space via some sets from 2017. I am pretty excited for harry potter sets and the city arctic sets in particular as the HP sets ought to have some really neat and useful parts for my fantasy homes and possibly creature building too, the arctic things could be really useful for me if I decide to build an ice cave or a snowy mountain, possibly not tho if it's just focusing on vehicles and such.

Original set descriptions were wrong! The Jurassic world sets are different then originally reported! Biggest set is a mansion with 2 Dinosaur (one being a raptor and the other being a bigger darker raptor). 6 minifigures including Owen and a triceritops skull build. There could be a third dinosaur but it’s a small new mold so it might be a stuff animal dinosaur mold. Next set includes the Dino chasing after Owen in the trailer and a 4 by 4 truck, a gyrosphere, 3 minifigures including Owen and Claire, next is a helicopter that has Owen with a cross bow and 2 other generic figures and the Dino is blu (or another similar raptor). Next is a similar set to raptor escape, comes with dr wu, a generic minifigure and a new Dino mold! It’s the one with the round head!, next is a Jeep and comes with owen and a generic figure and a pterodactyl. For the juniors we get a helicopter and a different color pterodactyl and a volcano, second includes a truck with no top, Owen and a new color raptor .

I do love houses and mansions can have some pretty nice decorations, ornaments, and general designs. I'm very curious about this now.

When it comes to creatures I think I prefer brick built as opposed to molded ones but I'm not 100 percent sure.

I do think these sets such as >pic related

i still don't have that set and i have wanted it for a while. I hadn't purchased it because for some reason I thought it was around 45 dollars but I just looked now and the shops around me are selling it for 29 dollars (from 35). They seem to recycle concepts and prototypes a lot (Atlantis had a set or two that were rejected Power Miners prototypes and so on), and Chima was meant to have rats as one of the bad guy groups, so I'd definitely expect something like that sooner or later, probably not a fantasy theme though since much like it probably was the not-Orks for NK legal staff would likely worry about infringing on GW's intellctual property with not-skaven.

I haven't really been involved with or payed too much attention to them in the last few years, but I do remember that before I gave up on them, the news came through that they're lawyer, the one who had started all that drama, was no longer working for them. I also seem to remember that their case against that 3rd party manufacturer (was it Chapterhouse?) was pretty much thrown out of court, that the only thing the judge ruled in GW's favor was they "own" the right to big ass armored shoulder pads.
Couple that with the fact that Lego is the biggest Toy Company in the world, and I looked it up a few months ago, Lego's profits from the last financial year were signification higher then GW.

But all that said, you are right, Lego Rat people would work best as something other then pure fantasy. Superheroes would be my suggestion.

Wow, with those other 2 many memories are coming back. As i said, i sorted my pile out recently and had a chance to do more sorting over christmas. I have kept many of the original booklets too. Shame I'm not at my childhood home now. But I'm now hoping to get it here and rebuild the old sets. 6817 is a fucking classic.

Yes, they were fine. I'd say my stuff is all in good condition except various bite marks from pieces we couldn't pull apart as children. The sets come from the late 1990s, including aquazone, episode 1, bionical stuff. My siblings had earlier things like pirates, but no not many large sets. I just don't think we got lego gifts too often other than christmas.

Where is the legitimate brand stepping up to compete directly with lego, even if just via an online marketplace and with no retail? Feels like the market is large enough to grow such a company. I know this website is operating deep into illegal territory with its """pumpkin king""" and """mouthy merc""" figures. They seem to suggest that they are printing their stuff "in house using new LEGO parts and our custom Minifigure design service" which is how I suppose they are getting around operating legally out of the UK.

Red Suit Brick Guy – in a red 4×2 brick, holding a blue 1×1.
Police Officer – old LEGO style, exactly like the one in LEGO set 600. He’s holding a printed 1×2 tile picturing LEGO set 600.
Elephant Suit Girl – female wearing elephant suit, with a pink tutu and holding a mouse.
Rocket/Firework Guy – male wearing a rocket/firework that is blue, top of firework is red and his pants are dark grey. Star/explosion printing all over in yellow.

Orange Balloon LEGO Fan Boy – not a costume at all. Boy with short legs, green glasses. His torso is white but printed with light blue minifigure heads and a multi-color tie. He comes with an orange balloon and 2 LEGO Series 1 minifigure pack printed 1×1 tiles. Also comes with a printed birthday present. This one is going to be easy to feel for with all these accessories. Spider Suit Guy – could actually be female, can’t tell. All black suite with white spider web printing on torso.Head mold has 4 molded and printed spider eyes on top of head. Also two fangs colored dark grey molded into head piece. Comes holding a black spider and an eight-legged mold attaches to back of figure.
Purple Balloon Girl – the compliment to the Orange Balloon LEGO Fan Boy. However, this girl doesn’t like LEGO. Here torso printing is just multi-color square on a white shirt. She is wearing light blue shorts using a multi-tone colored legs. Wearing a purple birthday hat. Accessories are a purple balloon, donut, cookie and a birthday gift.
Cactus Girl – girl wearing a new molded cactus piece. The arms on the torso are also new, as they look like an extension to the cactus with no hands. Green legs.
Cowboy Suit Guy – Cowboy with white hat. A horse attaches between his legs and torso so it looks like he is riding on a horse. Horse mold does no carry through to the back. Brown legs.
Balloon Artist Clown – Fun clown! Wearing a light green top-hat with a purple flower printed on it. Orange and purple torso printed vest. Orange coattails attach to his legs and carry about an inch off of him in the back. Red bow-tie attaches to his neck. Light green legs to match his top-hat. The best part is he comes holding balloons that he has twisted into dogs.
Cat Suit Guy/Girl – I cannot tell if this is male or female. Looks almost exactly like Slyvester the Cat. Comes holding a blue fish.

The problem is that every time I review Duplo, nobody watches them. Like even more than my already dismal numbers. I'd assume you'd have to do that "colors, numbers, and shapes" style channel to hit the target demographic of distracted by colors babies. Idk though. Go for it.

You could always try selling your used Duplo after you record it to buy more Lego sized parts. Some of the figures and special prints seem to be going for decent prices on bricklink.

I've had okay luck using Kre-O helmets because to be honest Kre-O helmets often have trouble staying on their own fucking products. But generally, yeah, that's good advice.

I realize this isn't bootlego but off-brand but my god the shit quality didn't leave much difference.

From what I've heard they were being cautious with their foray into the buildable interlocking brick market. They tried to cut in by being cheap over quality. The strategy has some logic to it. Lego typically has pretty good quality and quality control and there were already other competing brands, so they didn't see value in coming out on an equal footing and there was no point trying to offer a superior because then they'd just price themselves out. They just wanted a foothold into the market so cost cutting was the best way. Unfortunately that had its own problems, and plenty of them. Sometimes I'll get Lego with misprinting but they had both misprinting AND often you'd find extra chunks of plastic that hadn't been properly cut and cleaned, plus a lot of plastic fatigue.

They made a lot of other mistakes but I this is already tldr territory.

I'd add one of the great things about Lego entering the blindbag craze is that it allows the to get pretty experimental and produce some things they normally wouldn't bother with. Historical, mythological, paranormal. Even revisiting old themes with some new twists. I love the grizzled cyborg Blacktron vet and the Blacktron robo, but we've had Alien Conquest, Ultra Agents, and more. Plus new molds like the skunk, the new dogs. It's been very enjoyable, which is one reason I'm a bit apprehensive about the glut of licensing figs. There's still some neat figs and parts, but in some ways it's getting in the way of a good thing, least for me.

I literally jumped ship on Ninjago the second Lloyd grew up. I was all over Ninjago when it was a mix between Power Rangers and Shonen anime about four bros learning how to be beyblades and fighting skeleton bikers, but once it stopped being that I dropped it like a rock. It also bugged me that they had to make Zane a robot instead of letting him just be the team autist.

I prefer the effective simplicity of modern eyes. Black dots with smaller white dots. They're better when they remain simplistic and try not to get too busy or complex, not that there aren't exceptions especially with non-human figs. White around the eyes can be a bit much. You get that with the microfighters and it's a needless addition. They'd work just as well without it.

The realistic eyes looked okay at the time purely because they matched up well with the clone wars cartoon, but in hindsight it really was a terrible decision. Not only do they just look ugly as sin, but now they look terribly out of place since every minifig that came before and after TCW have such an iconic look, leaving TCW figures looking like black sheep. The only ones that looked passable were all the aliens that didn't have regular eyes to begin with (Cad Bane, Nute Gunray, etc) and any characters that we don't have bead eye versions to compare them to (Ahsoka, Shaak Ti, etc). Even Travelers Tales knew they looked shitty and out of line and stuck with the classic eyes for Lego Star Wars III. Sucks too because now I'm considering buying that Abomination they're calling a republic tank and that really expensive Palpatine's arrest set just so I can have an Aayla, Anakin, Sheev, and Mace that don't look like spawns of Satan.

After the last time /lg/ talked about these I managed to find some in my bins, including one poor bastard whose legs look like they were gnawed and even partially digested. Gotta love siblings, I guess. And one of the technic racing dudes but I'm sure there's at least one more hiding someplace.

A few years ago I'd have dismissed these as garish crap but now I kinda dig them. I plan on using them in some of my space scenes as uncanny valley style androids who freak out regular minifigs and probably occasionally go on murder sprees. Guess that's already the backstory of the guy with the fucked up legs.

I'm only a couple blocks away from the big NYC LEGO store so I could literally just make a list and pick up the individual pieces for like 20 bucks but that just feels like giving up since I know none of these sets or pieces have ever been outside the house, let alone outside a single room.

Yep. One Halloween I stuck that head on a Dracula body and teamed him up with the Scooby Gang. Made my own little Scooby Movie set out of it.

One reason I want to buy the Egghead mech is using that head on the recent Halloween set to make Vincent Van Ghoul. Fun times, fun times.

I'm starting to feel that Lego might actually be a huge waste of money for me.
I don't spend absurd amounts of money on Lego, but I do spend enough to make me regret it every time I do.
I received a total of $550 on Christmas, and I'm already down to about $210, with only $60 of that not being spent on Lego.
All I do with my Lego is display it. I don't even touch it much at all once I finish building it.
I have two sets en route to my house right now. I already know I'm gonna buy the new Tie Fighter and X Wing once they come out.

That's a chunk of fucking change but is it worth it to be able to reenact such kino moments as "I AM the Senate" and "UNLIMITED POWAAAAAAH"? Sucks because it's such a specific set that I can't even hold out a shred of hope that they'll remake it any time soon, unlike a lot of vehicles and stuff. It's really tempting too since it has Kit Fisto, easily my second favorite PT Jedi, next to Shaak Ti.

If you're not playing with your Lego, I reckon you're missing out on a majority of the fun. It was made to be disassembled and reassembled. There are cheaper Star Wars models than the ones Lego produces if you just want a static piece for your shelf.

Pro tip: play with them.
I know it's weird and feels unnatural for an (I assume) adult to actually use these things for their intended purpose. I was in the same situation for a while, thought Legos were the shit and amazing but could never justify buying any because I would just build them and let them collect dust and fall into disrepair. Then one day, when no one was home and I had nothing better to do, I fixed a few of my favorite sets up and just played with them. It was really awkward and cringe-worthy at first, but then I got into it and had a lot of fun. The thing you just gotta remember is that no one is watching. You can make your Legos do the dumbest shit, but no one has to know but you. Let your inner child out and just have fun, cross themes over, tear down and rebuild sets, even combine sets that would never fit together, go nuts. Like I said, the hardest part is just swallowing your self-consciousness and doing what you want, not what others expect of you. Everyone does weird shit when no one else is looking, and I can think of a million worse things people do when home alone than play with Legos.

Also what >>6705494 and >>6705513 said. I personally like to keep my sets intact, but the only way to get good at making custom builds is through practice, just like anything else in life. And remember, if you build it once, you can do it again and again. Here's what I recommend: take a medium sized set, I'm thinking between the 20 and 40 dollar price ranges, take it apart, and start by trying to rebuild it from memory. You'll get a feel for how certain elements work together and get some ideas of your own.

This is absolutely the threshold I had to cross a year or so back. It felt so weird at first to be doing something that wasn't taboo but I still wouldn't be comfortable sharing with other people, but now I pretty much have a cordoned-off storage room that I have transformed into my Lego bunker, where I play with and build Legos in secret. No one will ever know.

The movie's point was that anything done with Lego is entirely valid. You can be creative and use the sets for making custom builds, or you can follow the instructions and make the product Lego encourages you to make.

It starts off by acting like similar movies, where less creative people are shamed for not being as special, but then it subverts that shitty trope by showing the pros and cons of both Lego philosophies.

It tied into the main moral of the story overall: If anyone can be special, literally anyone can be special.

Except when you only follow the instructions, then you can't be special. Remember, Lord business wasn't redeemed (and didn't become the special) until he embraced creativity thanks to emmet. I don't know what you're smoking but the movie never once portrays following the instructions in a positive light. The only thing that even comes close to that is when the gang is infiltrating the tower using emmets instructions, a plan which ultimately fails.

Taking existing sets and modifying them is a good way to start.

Like taking a modular building and adding floors to it or combining two modulars in to one building.

Another great way to get started is to try adding power functions to a set that doesn't have them or isn't intended to work with power functions.

I recently took out my old 4708 Hogwarts Express. The set is intended to work with a 9V train motor (old style), but making it compatible with modern power functions was a real challenge. I added a tender car to hide the battery box and it also has lights at the front and in the passenger car. I took some inspiration from later models and ordered some extra parts on bricklink to finish it up, but overall it's my own creation and I'm really happy with it.

This might sound a bit weird, but does anyone else feel like some new Lego doesn't feel very lego-y?

I just got the newer Cantina set with the remolded dewback and I actually prefer the old one. I can barely tell the new one is Lego. Granted the old one was made out of large, specialty pieces as well.

The moral of the movie, which you all missed, is that there is no one true way to enjoy Lego. Emmet/The Kid represents the latter philosophy, while Business/The Dad represents the former philosophy, but the truth is that they are both two sides of the same coin. In a world crafted by only the Dad's philosophy, Lego would just be like any other toy or model, but in a world crafted only by the Son's philosophy, there is no structure or order to mix up to begin with, and Lego is just sold in buckets of random pieces like any other building block toy. What Ole intended was for an open-ended toy experience, where you have all the necessary parts to build whatever cool thing is on the box, but if you wanted to build whatever your imagination wished instead, nothing would stop you. There IS no ONE way to enjoy Lego, no matter what anyone says.

Meh, it's mostly on the licensed sets. Take a look at Creator and you'll see more classic builds.

They do have a lot more curved pieces without any studs nowadays. They introduced these really large curved pieces back in 2003.

i generally agree, up until about a decade ago, lego used to be more stylized/geometric which made the design of sets and pieces/creatures more consistent and systematic. nowadays there are a lot more curvy/detailed/custom parts which increase detail and accuracy to the source material, but as a tradeoff they dilute the trademark blocky lego style

I spend more money on Lego than i intend every single time. But i've never regretted it since i fiddle with it just so much. I think the hours of time and joy spent on making and designing and looking at it per Euro ist overall a pretty good deal. And most importantly this stuff is cumulative. The more you get the more balls deep you get into making stuff and through time you get better at doing different techniques.

I can understand you if you just make sets and leave them like that. I hardly ever do that. I only have like 3 or 4 sets in their original configuration. All the other either got parted out, or modified way beyond their original scope.
I do have builds that have stayed together for years now, but i both love posing my figures around them doing different things or making wacky shit happen in them. (figures that all have backstories and stuff too) Like I have this one yellow car i made when i first visited /lg/ here. That was years ago but over course of all this time i kept incrementally improve it right to this day, so the enjoyment keeps going on.

I don't really do live-action pewpew playing like >>6705520 (I totally respect you for doing that tho), but i do pose around and sometimes even write down the stories and shenanigans that happen to the guys in my city. Sometimes when i'm tired i make an ensemble of things i built or put them in a place that's silly for the character. Then when i walk past it the next day while doing shit I often get a good laugh from them.

Right now a spaceman is making food in the kitchen while his youngest daughter wears her ballerina outfit playing doing a tea ceremony with her pet beetle, cat and bunny.
An australian sc-fi not-crocodile dundy tries out his australian battlegauntlets in the martian bathroom. (two giant spiders attached to his hands, one spider holding a boomerang)

I have not enough room for display which makes the collection I have too big to display.
I also hate how many yellowed pieces I have and that the H2O2 shit I used had no effect or made it worse so I should just buy it again.
The one silver-lining I see is that it feels like I am close to having "everything". It's more uncommon parts that interest me and I buy than entire sets because I am always more satisfied with my own designs. New Star Wars sets are only relevant for new alien heads or hats, Decals fix so many missing character issues (if I could follow through on making and printing them out which I don't want to do while my figures scratch each other in containers).
CMFs are becoming less and less interesting with all those gimmick series.

Do you really need all 4 jedi? Since Mace is the only really important guy and comes in the Grievous speeder. If not there are still cheap versions of Kit Fisto and Seasee Tiin (TCW version) leaving only Agen Kolar as an expensive one.
TRI Fighter Sheev from 2014 is a much better Sheev figure anyway. Head/hair looks more like Palpatine than the Arrest version unless the turning head transformation gimmick is that important for you.
Then you only need the red Sheev Sleeves dress body which you could take from a TCW Sheev. That one should be much cheaper than the Arrest version, looks near identical and has much more pronounced sleeves through the fabric parts he comes with.

Finally got around to building my dungeon and playing with it.
It was pretty great, though I just winged it in terms of how many rooms, walls and doors I needed.
