After their recent offerings and poor decision making regarding the franchise I can only say “Good riddance.”

But I’m finding myself equally excited and friightened with the possibilities of what is to come for Power Rangers now. When Bandai did things right they did them very well, who knows if we will see the same apply when someone else takes the reigns.

Huge news indeed. I'm sure this will hit Bandai hard, but hopefully in the time they have (about 14 months) they prepare for their future without Power Rangers. There's no need for another toy company to fall. They have Dragon Ball, so maybe they should try to be the anime figure company or something to that effect, there's even that live action One Piece show happening, so maybe that's something to consider. But with Dragon Ball being their currently biggest franchise once they lose PR, I'm hoping they treat it well and continue the Stars line beyond Super.

Current rumor says Hasbro is the new license holder, but since they have Marvel and Star Wars already I am concerned they'll treat PR like an afterthought. Plus they've made heavy cutbacks to Transformers in recent years so I don't expect Megazord offerings from them to be any better than modern BoA.

Nobody knows, people believe it's only 3 years because the Bandai license doesn't expire until April 2019
Bandai America is probably having money issues, or all the old guard that worked on PR left and the current execs don't want it anymore. Not uncommon for that to happen in big corporations.

Power Rangers just reached its 25th year of existence, so usually when something reaches a milestone anniversary like that companies like to refresh the look of it to modernize it, and play off of the “past vs. future” dynamic. Gives anything prior a definitive look while distinguishing anything new.

2. I could see it being a possibility. If you’ll remember the original MMPR series was three seasons, and gave the brand a chance to implement more storytelling and lore-building than a typical one year season gives you. They may see restructuring the show this way as an opportunity to rekindle some of the sucess the original MMPR had. Hopefully they get some better writers though, otherwise three years of a terrible show may just kill the brand outright.

Their Dragon Ball line is very small, it won't be able to sustain them. Power Rangers is a huge line between figures, vehicles, zords, and roleplay. Dragon Ball doesn't lend itself to the sheer volume of product PR does, so they couldn't even expand the DB line to make up for the loss of PR if they wanted to. I honestly can't see Bandai America bouncing back from this unless they happened to land an equally big property.

Well it does but not in this day and age. The old Irwin line was massive with vehicles, multiple versions of pretty much every character, and various other figures. But Dragon Ball is older and Super isn't really being targeted to kids the way Kai was.

This is certainly a concern of mine. Power Rangers was Bandai's cash cow, and even they couldn't help but fuck a lot of things up, what hope is there for a bigger company who does fine without PR caring enough to do things right? Based on Hasbro's other offerings we could easily be looking at figures with 5 PoA in a year.

For sure, but at the moment, from their list of licensed properties, is the biggest one they have. It seems to be selling pretty well overall and is finally on its way to Canada too (and hopefully other international markets, so that's more money). No doubt that Bandai will need more than Dragon Ball, but it's what they have now. Maybe they should make a bid for other big properties, or try to invest in upcoming ones. Jakks is slowing significantly with Nintendo, maybe they can try to get in on that. I'm definitely curious where they go from here.

And of course also for the future of Power Rangers toys and figures. We'll hopefully get some idea of trajectory of both of these soon.

I thought the movie toys were the one thing that did well though. The movie itself was the real problem and that lies on everyone. Ugly designs, terrible trailers, dumpmonth/"Fuck you it's January" release, and horrible pre-release hype nothing leading up to this movie was going to really be a success.

The movie got some good word of mouth and I think home media sales were decent enough but it's biggest problem is it wasn't a mass audience movie, or a kids movie. It's a teen coming of age film. And it's not anything amazing but it does a decent job of that but it really needed to draw in kids and nostalgic fans not teenagers who aren't going to buy toys or care enough to see it all.

That's a bit of a cobbled together figure but honestly I love zord builder. There's no reason these ports shouldn't be compatible when possible, and the figures have never suffered for those ports. They suffer because Bandai had to keep retail prices for the mechs low and as time went on that became harder and harder.

An issue Hasbro is having with Transformers so I don't see why people think they'll be able to fix it.

If they weren't blocking distribution of the original sentai while running pr shows, I'd be more supportive. It's also not like they have shows with the same suits simultaneously as sentai does in the same year.

Since it was stuck at the tail end of the last thread just gonna put this out there.

I think this is honestly a good idea to ditch BOA.
In the past few years Bandai has had kind of a vice grip on the balls of the franchise. Yeah we get some cool Legacy Megazords . . .but they must be Zord Builder Compatible. We get Legacy figures but you have to buy gobs of mac&cheese rangers before we may possibly see the Psychos we want.
Bandai was going to float the series after the "re-versioning" a Samurai toy line and no show. They put their own spin on the Samurai suits as "upgrades" to the original MMPR and gave us the Super Samurai bullshit Saban had to shoe horn into his show for 2 seasons. Bandai figured if Saban did it once they would do it again and have prioritized the shitty gimick and armored up figures over a core set of well balanced action figures. They see MMPR as more of a 3-5 year old brand instead of an 8-12yo brand and made sure their weight was felt. The toys where influencing the show instead of the other way around.

Now picture Hasbro takes the line and does away with major gimicks and "upgrades" the show influences the toy line as it should. A robust Legacy line that both kids and collectors can get behind, hell if I'm pulling a wish list maybe they team up with BOJ and we see Artisan props over here as Legacy items, or even a return to straight importing mechs.

Like I said as I see it BOA has been dead weight on Power Rangers for years and finally Saban has pulled their life support.

Good Riddance.

The Zordbuilder concept is great, but Bandai's execution of it has been piss poor. For starters all Zordbuilder pegs/ports aren't created equal. I recently got the Blaze Megazord and was looking forward to making 4/5ths of an all Yellow Megazord (assuming the 5th part would come next year), only to have the Sabertooth Tiger refuse to lock into place. You can't tell from this photo, but if I breathed on it the Zord would pop right out. It's amazing I was even able to get it to hold long enough to take the photo.

I can't substitute a different yellow Zord because the Griffin Thunderzord is a lot taller, and the Tiger Mechazord is a lot shorter, which brings us to problem #2, inconsistent sizing. When your gimmick is intercompatibility all your legs should be the same damn size. Arms you can get away with different lengths, but you should be able to combine any legs and still have it stand up straight on it's own two feet.

In general the Zordbuilder system seems like an afterthought, and when things end up fitting together nicely it's through sheer happenstance. Lots of times there's clearance issues. Other times there's omissions of ports/pegs where you'd want them. It's kind of a mess how many things can't combine with other things which should be able to.

but as I pointed out the original proto types for the Samurai assortment show that Bandai was in the driver seat for the style and use of upgrades. Saban just managed to quarantine it to the zord cockpit footage. The toys are influencing the show as I said and Nick obviously has no control over the show. The only thing we can pin on Nick is the need for the splitting of the seasons and the stupid schedule.

Also they suffered, at least on the legacy front, from being loaded up with unnecessary diecast. I've seen so many people blame Zordbuilder for the Mega Dragonzord's knee problem when the issue has nothing to do with Zordbuilder. The Zordbuilder ports/pegs aren't giving out, it's the knees that are bucking because the combination is absurdly top heavy and the toy wasn't adequately designed to carry so much weight.

Says who? What things have Bandai America designed themselves to prove they're better than this? Have you forgotten the horrendous 2010 line which gave us gems like cell phone Rangers?

The US original Rangers, Battlizers, etc. are generally designed by Plex, the same team who designs everything for Sentai. If the 2017 movie stuff was BoA left to their own devices I can absolutely see it being the dumpster fire it turned out to be.

The "Flip head" figures original sculpts came to light about half a year into the shows run. Red, Green and Blue clearly being Jason, Tommy and Billy. It also explained the weird under helmet face mask the Rangers are seen wareing during the morph for that season. With no idea who Saban was going to hire to be the Samurai rangers, Bandai replaced the heads with the generic masked heads that would only need to be skin tone matched around the eyes once a cast was announced, and the face masks made their pointless debut in the show a few weeks later in the first episode.

See I never argued that, but none of that means Bandai is trying to aim the franchise at 3-5 year olds. They're making action figures for 8 year olds and forcing toy designs on the show but the show being aimed lower than before isn't on them. Toyline designs being in the show doesn't make it targeted to 3-5 year olds. The show's forced comedy, the way the actors are forced to act, the simplified style of writing is very consistent with Nick's modern day kid sitcoms.

I think I see your point, admittedly I have never sat down and watched any of Nick's sitcoms so I guess I can only go by what I know and what I see. To me it seems like Bandai sees more profit in pure nostalgia and kid impulse buys, Saban is having to write around the toys thus lowering the quality of the show.
Again just how I see it, not knowing much of Nick's other line up might explain that.

Nah Saban is in it for nostalgia too. Probably more so than Bandai. They sold the buy as returning home to the original owners for a reason. And the toys they're writing around really aren't that big a deal. Samurai's problem was the stilted acting and poorly transliterated Shinkenger not masks during morphs or extra megazord suits. They're awkward but there are bigger problems with the production. Especially since plenty of past seasons have had way more intrusive toys like OO's ugly CGI mech, or the Battlizers.

If the next license holder is Playmates or Hasbro, the villains will probably keep coming. The TMNT line was filled with monster of the weeks and they directly inspired Bandai to add more monsters for the Dino Charge line.

Whenever someone says Dino Charge is bad I always wonder what they're even comparing it to. Even the fabled SECOND HALF IS SHIT is just a meme. It's the same level of content the entire way through.

Also last time I looked at the ratings Ninja Steel is the number one kids action show in America so they probably don't give a shit. I haven't seen it but I'd love for someone to tell me why it sucks.

The villains have always been my main draw, and Bandai had been doing really well with the villains since Dino Charge so I'm definitely concerned with another company living up to that. It wouldn't start until January 2019 the earliest, and I don't see Saban allowing Bandai to make half a toyline before someone else takes the reins a few months later. Saban will likely postpone the Kyuranger adaptation until the fall when the new company can start fresh.

Generally don't follow PR toys, but wow. I'd be excited about the possibility for better figures, but the lack of new legacy stuff (if true) would be pretty disappointing.

Also, isn't the current theory/rumour is that they're skipping Zyuohger because they couldn't get it to work with the zord builder stuff? Red faces all around if that is the case, considering how ridiculously well anything Minecraft related sells.

But really, it's the Rangers themselves that have the most potential. BoA's Rangers have two things going against them. One, they're out of scale with most other toylines. Their small figures are too big to fit in with 1/18th while their larger figures are too small to fit in with 1/12th. Two, the sculpting suck. I mean, let's be honest, we're not talking about SHF quality here.

Now, assuming Hasbro gets the license and they put in effort... A 1/18th line of Rangers would be great. Now Power Rangers can interact with MU or Shodo or even Joes and Star Wars. A 1/12th line would be interesting. I don't expect SHF levels of articulation or sculpting, but even if the sculpting's as bad as the BoA ones, at least they'll be in scale with ML and SWB. Hasbro should love PR, since if nothing else, there should be a lot of parts recycling they could do.

I choose to look on the positive side. I mean, it's not like they could do much worse than BoA (I hope). Even their 5PoA stuff at least look good and are size compatible with other 1/18th. And they're not too shy on making villains.

4 inch Rangers were already tried and failed. Bandai went back to 5 inch because kids didn't respond to them, and I can't say I cared for them either. 5 inch isn't an unheard of scale. It was more popular in the 80s/90s, but you've still got stuff like TMNT today or even some McFarlane. In fact I think even some of Hasbro's offerings, like GOTG Animated, are actually 5 inch. I think 5 inch is the magic number when it comes to your main kids line. But none of that 5 PoA bullshit regardless of what scale they go with. I don't care how good they look, Power Rangers need at MINIMUM what BoA's 5 inch figures could do.

If Hasbro is the license holder, I'd expect the following:

- Overpriced but decently done transforming figures like the Yo-Kai Watch figure pictured.
- 5 PoA 4" figures that will either be cheaper than the grossly overpriced Star Wars line or will have better accessories. This is the best chance for enemy characters, and it's unlikely that they'll retain the 5" size class as their production lines are primarily 4" and 6" figures. It's not impossible though. We'd need some sort of renaissance moment to get late Marvel Universe quality figures again.
- 6" figures will probably be coming, but slowly or with later season characters. We've just had a line of the same basic characters in the same price point/size class, even if we are talking about a 2 year gap.
- Importing a lot of the cheaper Japanese stuff that can easily pass US toy laws. If BoA truly did have a say-so in what was involved in the shows, expect that Hasbro'll double down on that if they can.

I'm hopeful that if it's successful as a partnership, Hasbro'll try for another go at bringing Kamen Rider to the States, but I'm not going to hold my breath. If we DO get 1/18, scaled figures, I'm praying for them to get proper articulation, I loved the 2010 line. I'm more worried about the longevity of the Imaginext line though, that series has been great.

Seeing something on clearance definitely isn't proof of sales, but it's obvious enough in this case that the toys sold like shit. Probably because of the designs, they leaned way too hard into an edgy look to appeal to the older audience that they lost any sense of the iconic designs that would have helped sell the toys.

They're talking about the Power Rangers brand as a whole getting a 23% bump from the previous year at the same time. I would certainly expect an increase in sales when they've adding an additional subset to the line, and a lot of that increase could very well be attributed to Ninja Steel creating more sales than the second season of Dino Charge.

Ultimately the proof is in the pudding. Saban didn't terminate the brand's longstanding relationship with Bandai over anything less than abysmal sales.

Because they were oversized compared to other 1/18th lines and had simplified sculpting? I mean, compare one of those with a GI Joe, MU or even Star Wars. The difference in sculpted detail and proportions are pretty significant.

5 inch is a bit of a niche market though. I mean, yeah, Hasbro also does 5 inch, but they have a bit of a shotgun approach. GotG is available in 2.5 inches, 4 inches, 5 inches AND 6 inches.

But that's really not the point. The point being, yeah, it's very possible that Hasbro will release PR as 5POAPOS, but imagine if they treat PR well. Imagine having various PR Villains rendered in beautiful detail. If you look at Hasbro's face scanning tech over the last few years, they've improved tremendously. The early Avengers face sculpts were meh, but the newer Netflix Marvel faces would give Mafex/SHF a run for their money. Imagine having a Tommy head that actually vaguely resembles Tommy. I mean, he'd probably be an overpriced Walmart or Convention exclusive, but at least it could conceivably exist.

BoA was excellent at doing just enough to hook in the kiddies, but c'mon, wouldn't you welcome the chance, the mere possibility of getting actual good Power Ranger toys?

It's been common for BoJ products to be great while BoA products are retooled to simplify the toy, have fewer paint apps and be cheaper, because they are practically separate companies. This should not be the case but it has been for 25+ years.

There's a big emphasis in the press release about how much untapped potential there is with adult Power Rangers fans. Bandai America dipped their toes with that stuff but never fully commited and I'm sure it's due to a number of factors. Hasbro doesn't sound like they'll have that problem especially since they emphasized their online store in having the ability to stock exclusives made just for older fans.

Not to mention Bandai Japan's been getting heavily into the 100mm (~4") higher-articulated figure lineup for Kamen Rider, so I would be surprised if they didn't try to push for it. And the 2010 line was pretty good, even if the weird wing/claw weapons didn't make any sense.

Can see this happening, Kamen Rider does something similar with their yearly belts. It's always been a draw and if they can find a way to incorporate it into the show it would be a huge draw.

Imaginext might go on, this whole sea change is for the master licensee. Hasbro does have their own line of kiddie style figures, through Playskool, but depending on contracts saban might still let Mattel use the license onwards. Mattel does some other lines in Imaginext that they don't own the main toy rights for, for example, Teen Titans Go.

Use your mind powers to think about what would be easier, just reusing the mold you're already using for the bodies to recreate the head, or resculpting a helmet so its hollow.

While that would be awesome I feel like that would be impossible. As I don't think Takara would get anything out of the deal considering they wouldn't even be allowed to release their version in Japan, because of bandai.

Unless there is some sort of loophole if they brand it as Power Rangers, like figma branded their Kamen Rider Ryuki as the American version Dragon Knight.

I see Hasbro going the Voltron-route and just selling the individual pieces instead of a large boxset. I think that will work well for Kyuranger, and eventually Lupin vs Pats. Especially if they do little ride-figures that can pilot the mechs.

I'm pretty sure we'll also see a switch back to yearly changes too. Saban films the stuff all in one go so Nick is essentially just sitting on episodes that are already completed, and BOA struggled to make splitting the line across two years to really work.

And it generally moves toys. MMPR to Mystic Force were the best selling boytoys of their respective years. OO was knocked down to number 2 by Bayformers, and I think it's fluctuated around the 1 and 2 spot since. It's issue right now is that it doesn't really have a place on TV anymore. Action shows don't seem to have the same draw, and it really doesn't fit in on any of the kid networks right now.

I think a big issue regarding it's cheesiness is an attempt to fit in on Nick and mimic their style of sitcom. Like if you compare Dino Charge or Ninja Steel to Henry Danger or The Thundermans you can see that they're poorly trying to fit that style while still being Power Rangers.

The reason he was shilled so much is because he was in the pilot, which is probably what the merchandise license holders had to work off of. But even so, he does have a pretty cool as fuck design, so I don't mind one bit and would love for him to get a decent modern figure.

When Saban bought the rights for Zyurangers, they also bought some costumes that Toei had around that were due to be tossed into storage or destroyed since filming was over. Saban bought these to make more American footage, naturally. This meant they could feature these monsters more.

A bunch of costumes ended up damaged in transit, though, for example, Dora/King Sphinx. Saban was probably expecting to have that costume available, hence all the use of him in merchandising.

Toei started to store their suits better because Saban was paying for the things. Now they've been benefiting from it because the suits they have kept they can reuse for reunions and special events. Prior to that they would just toss them on the floor or throw them away. I really hope we at least get "Bandora's Gang" from the Legends line. It's a shame Imaginex is the only toyline that could get them made.

If they didn't also include the original heads I'd say so, but the figures are otherwise identical to the originals, and the civilian heads are basically just an added accessory. Bluefin only mentioned Red and Green as well.

I was trying to think of anything good Bandai of America has put out in the past 10+ years and I could only think of the Legacy Dragon Dagger and Saba. Everything else was a steaming pile of shit, did BoJ help design those? They were great, and at a fair pricepoint, and the rest of the Legacy line sucked and/or was too expensive.

Ninja Storm had the best chance, but none of those were good options for the American market at that point in time, Coming off MMPR they needed some heavy hitters like Zeo and Space. After you've roped people in with the most popular teams you can try your luck with less popular teams.
