Believe it or not, 1-steps have been selling very well over the last 4 years, it helps that it was a mix that stores wanted to order them in bulk because they are so cheap and that it was easy for parents to buy their 3 year old a Optimus Prime that they didn't need to help transform for the kid.

It's not that kids are dumber so much as they keep aiming at a lower age. The original 1984 TFs from 35 years ago were aimed at 8+ which is close to the same age the generations line was aiming at. RiD, Rescue Bots and many of the movie toys were aiming at the 7 and under market which means you are getting kids that will need TFs that have the same engineering of the old G1 or simpler to be appealing to parents that would be buying for their toddler.

I think the misconception they have is that these films will be aimed at them when the reality is they will be aimed at what makes money which has been the cape stuff so I expect it will still hold more to the Movie designs but will be much more adventure focused than action. And they are completely fooling themselves if they think we will see more robot interactions and what not. It's a safe bet that most of the film will be humans with robots fighting filling only the last part of the 3rd act.

Nothing is being sacrificed, to take that logic would be to look at any merc, tshirts or otherwise and think that's taking away from the brand. It's not, it's just spreading it's influence to other markets. One steps have been around while CW, TR, and others were in the market and their easier to make profits likely help the brand in all departments.

I'll be honest that sounds worse for the brand than one steps but that's because you get rid of the transformation and you lose all charm of the toy.

You'll be getting that through Kuro Kara Kuri Action Figures. That said why not get the MP Soundwave, the guy has high level articulation and the transforming gimmick. He's the best of both worlds.

Already got him, but hes more of a display item and i want something smaller i can actually play with. I even bought an extra ravage and frenzy set so one is on display and the other i have on my desk

Those were from the days where additional gimmicks were integrated into the TF toy. They decided to separate the articulated transformer toy and the gimmicks into different lines from AOE onwards. It's partly because of feedback from DOTM (collectors hate gimmicks but kids ?love? them) and also because they could milk the same character multiple times.

The reason bayformer sucked was because of the focus on human drama and the fetishization of the military.
Also, the huge gaping plotholes.

The early robot designs were interesting except for the TLK bullshit. Even drift sucks ass. It's all robots wearing human costumes.

If they are gonna reboot the films, they should focus more on the robot characters and build a solid storyline.

It work in the first film because they made the Deceptions a serious threat(One took out a whole military base by himself and his backpack needed a full air strike to be injured) and the military help but didn't out right save the day, it was a team effort deal. Come RotF yeah it went full retard and the human military could mass murder robots with ease.

Make sure Bumblebee goes down as it should and we bury this garbage just as deep as they buried everything we loved about TF. They are only now learning their lesson, it's too late for this film as we have already seen anyway. More of the same, more of our shame.

Celebrations aside, this is just phase one. We got rid of the crude, crass, misogynistic, brainlessly violent robot films masquerading as TF films. Now we want to try to make sure what comes next is not only better, but much better. Almost every decision they made needs overhauled. When you see Hasbro at a convention, push them hard on this. We want TRANSFORMERS on film - period. Otherwise, they are wasting their time. And we want this site behind the fans - not the corporate propaganda! It didn't work.

Because we need to push. Hasbro having more control doesn't necessarily equal good things - they have yet to make any good movies. We all know the challenges they bring - so be vocal. We want to be able to recognize the things we have loved forever. We want to get goosebumps when we see Optimus because we know it's him, not something that looks like Rodimus Prime mixed with Overload. We know that Crosshairs is a blue and red off-road vehicle, not a green Corvette. We know if you want a Corvette, it's Tracks you need to include and certainly not Sideswipe. We know that Shockwave and Bumblebee have the ability to speak. We know that humans don't constantly take out Decepticons, otherwise why are the Autobots even around? We know that Optimus Prime does not take killing lightly, and certainly not the killing of humans. We know that Drift has more way more depth and backstory than a racial stereotype. We know that Ironhide is a red van, not a black truck. We know that TransFormers were not here for every major event in human history - a bizarre storyline that made less and less sense with each passing film. We know they don't seek an AllSpark - at least not until they pass on. They seek ENERGON!

Here's to the future, with renewed optimism!

I know, very little ultra g1 figures exist with the 2 mp's, the ex gokin, the ultra metal statue, that's pretty much it, and if you think about it its all one needs, I'm sure soap team made some vinyl shit too but you can't restrict yourself to the same old stuff.
Its a nit pick I have to not allow for designs to allow for some creativity, expression or just not moving forward, like robotech fans who are still stuck on vf1-'s when we have the vf-31, or geewunners who can't accept anything that isn't strictly cannon (I do admit seeing shit in the movies like hound being the guns dude throws me off but slap another name on him and I'd be cool a new character entirely).

But maybe that's because I want something like binaltech back, tf collectables that transform that don't adhere to anything other than "its an optimus prime gotta have red as its primary" and not just hope for a literal kids toy to do that, or hell give me a new transformers series that doesn't have the same old cast, like beast wars.

I just want the brand to move forward I guess

As someone who's been collecting for a long time, the reason for this separate, simplified line is easy to see; the movie designs were just too complex to be adapted to the level of complexity Hasbro was keeping the mainline at in the UT days. Concept Camaro Bumblebee may not be super complex, but compare it to Armada or cybertron hot Shot, figures a 5 year old would work with ease, and realize that effectively Bumblebee was its equivalent on store shelves,and you see the issue.

If you ask me, with the movie line's uncertain future, Hasbro should use the opportunity to take back the reigns of TF design and stop relying on movie/cartoon/comic designs steering the ship, unless those designs are made with transforming toys in mind. The best "simple" Transforming figures were Armada, they were robust, fun figures that are still perfect for kids.

I don't need believability, I just like some visual connection between robot and alt-modes. That's a large part of the whole design aesthetic of transformers to me, even across iterations with completely different looks overall. G1 Optimus is largely made up of truck parts, but so it movie Optimus from the first few movies. That ability to tell at a glance what they turn into is important most of the time. those that do't do this usually end up being unmemorable designs, with a few exceptions.
Its fine you want cool robots, but I mean there's plenty of non-transforming cool robots that don't have to adhere to anything out there and I don't see why you have to make Transformers look like that when there's already so many options out there. I'm all for it if they want to actually play ball and try to rationalize why the design looks stylized, though. For example, I've always liked how Cybertron Optimus has the angled chest windows because they're side windows on his vehicle mode.

You give a child a toy he loves to look at but can't operate and I will CONFIRM that he'll get sick of it and toss it out but you give him a simpler CHEAPER representation and no doubt it means the kid can have more fun with the toy fully enabled for their needs but easier on the parents wallet letting them collect more in the line.

I say this because my brother loved zoids and got a zoids tomy model kit one christmas, he was crying because him and my parents didn't know it was a god damn model kit and I ended up being blessed with the task of building it, I did, he had it walk for about 2 days the it gathered dust, parents were upset by his reaction that they threw it out despite my protest to keep it (they felt I was stealing it despite THEM passing it onto me).

The difference is, for a lot of lines, the cheaper version still LOOKS like the design. With transformers, simplified ones usually have very different designs

Speaking of non-transforming figures, I'm planning on kitbashing/scratchbuilding original design Transformer statues out of vehicle models/mecha plamo parts and assorted detritus. I'm thinking they should all look like they turn into IRL vehicles, both for ease of finding model parts and because I'm a vehicle nerd. Beast formers will be made from vehicle parts too, albeit thematically fitting ones (so Blackarachnia will be made to look like she turns into a classic Alfa Romeo Spider etc). I'm thinking Megatron will be a tank but I'm not sure what kind- King Tiger perhaps?
