That's way more than I expected! That's cool, means they're at least regular minifig level of costumizable between each other, minus the arms I guess, but it always feels wrong to pull arms off regular minifigs.

Price was the only reason I didn't buy Dimensions figs. They have some of the simple ones like Aquaman, the fire Chima characters, Bad Cop, Gimli, and Nya at Five Below, but even then it's $5 vs what you could get from a cheaper and more unique cmf, so I've passed on them.

I wish there were modular sets that were not for modern city themes. I want modulars for late middle ages or 1600-1900 kind of like they did with a few kingdoms themes and the disney pirates sets. Regular city is so boring and depressing. I live in the city it sucks.

Ok so I recently moved. Yesterday I dug up my M&Ms mosaic thingy I won around 10ish Years ago. BUT it’s disassembled. And all I have is a 80x120 stud baseplate glued onto a sheet of plywood And a bunch of bags of bricks. I’m trying to find out if I have instructions. I don’t think I do. But does anyone have an idea on where do I get instructions for this?

That's a lot. And I'm not sure there are instructions for this.

You could contact either of the two people that have it for sale and ask for high resolution pictures of the piece. Then, segment it off and put the tiles in based off the picture.

I'd offer them $20 or so to take the time to send you a photo album of the piece.

I think suptg is only missing the second thread of Endman and the Desert of Death, but since that thread was a wash it doesn't really matter because I'd retcon it anyway.

I have the 2 on the top. They are really nice sets. Some old pieces, you can get a castle theme minifig helmet, shield, and sword.

The big one in the tub doesn't come out until March 1st. I'll be buying it. It comes with more cool pieces like a pirate hat.

The 2 small one's on the bottom I'm not that impressed with, but they are cheap options for the 60 year anniversary plate that is included with every set.

depends on what material/what era they are from.
You've got pieces that will increase friction a ton, you've got pieces that will be floppy together, you've got hard and brittle parts you need to be careful with and parts that pop on and off like it's absolutely no big deal.
To do it as safely as possible you need some experience, to 'feel' what the parts are doing when you pull them and stop prematurely if necessary. Spotting wich materials and colours will likely do what. To slightly bend the leg piece towards the back when twisting and pulling if it has printing close/adjacent to the t-hip piece and so on.

I'm really anal when it comes to legal/illegal in my builds (i still refuse to put tiles in clips even though Lego does it), but changing out hands, arms and legs i personally have no problem with.

It's mine, was inspired by the Hornblower series, which I recently finished. And the thread I have is very similar to what you posted. I hate the yarn that some people use.

It's the frigate Lydia, which is in Happy Return/Beat to Quarters. My model is really just a mishmash of Google images. I hadn't seen the show in over ten years, so I didn't even think about basing it off of the Indy. The Happy Return is the first in the series as published. I read from there to the end, and then the "prequels", from Midshipman onward. The TV series is books 1-3 chronologically, but not by publishing date.

Also, if anyone has guides to naval uniforms of 1800 or so, it would be a huge help. Google searches keep giving me contradictory information, and it will spare me some time making a k thread.

Listen, I work with Kids and tMOST of them see Lego as one play toy. I met kids that HAD NO IDEA they can rebuild stuff, I met kids that had their Lego glued because "it was breaking when he was playing".
In my eyes Lego is best toy ever, but they do verry little nowadays to prove that. They treat Lego like a normal 1 use toy so kids see it as it as well.

Not the guy you're replying to, but I think the point was you have options. You can buy a set and build it by the instructions and play with it until you're ready to display it somewhere or put it in storage. If you choose to do that you've already gotten play value plus build value out of it. If you choose you can modify the build or make your own stuff. I did that a lot with my brother's hand-me-down lego and the few sets that I actually got. There were no 'devices' and TV sucked back then, so I could spend 5+ hours every day with lego. I'm not sure today's kids have that kid of time.

I don't really like that part either, but honestly what else would you use there? They were fairly important to the overall aesthetic of the sets they came in and new parts always mean new options and new builds that just weren't possible. We've already seen them used as parts of cannons and mech feet in MoCs and as the adapting wheel/jet engine things in the twinfector set. I'm not really glad that I added so many of them to my collection, but I'm happier with some of them instead of a bunch more generic tires that don't even fit the theme.

The playsets themselves are not super impressive, but they are small and modular. It's a shame they are retired or I would buy duplicates because you can build a really nice Harbor, fort, and docks out of the parts. Great ratio of brown and white pieces on the imperial sets. Perfect for a Caribbean style fort.

When you connect the sets together, they look much better.

I like it better than the original which didn't have any eyes. Back when Lego was having issues printing on curved, small surfaces.

All the same, I do wish they kept the same mold in the sand green color and printed the details on that head.

I remember growing up doing nothing but watching TV, it killed my imagination completely, I wasn't even able to suspend my disbelief enough to be satisfied with my toys if they weren't properly to scale with each other, or of the same general style.

My main problem with so many arbitrary parts being made is that it just drives home how retarded the "LEGO pieces ONLY" rule is, if LEGO is just gonna keep making new pieces anytime they to, you might as well just use whatever the fuck you need while building.

It would be beyond autistic to just stick to LEGO branded paper clips and string, the point of the "LEGO only" rule was to create a challenge, but in the current state, you might as well just not fucking have it all, since LEGO clearly doesn't give a shit.

I mean this is a bit of a sideways rant, but it's something to be noted.

Well, it already look fucking excellent.
But if you want to go all the way, i'd try and make the ground surface as flat (and probably hard/stury for better handling) as possible. The slight paper crease breaks the illusion a bit now. If you go for the enormous stretched out desert look, i'd try and (artificially) make the horizon of the beige plane higher than it is now. Maybe a little forced perspective where the ground plane tilts up a bit at the end, but this could be very tricky both manufacturing and consistent lighting-wise.

For now i'd just try and make the floor as pristine as possible. Maybe by applying it to a hard plastic sheet for support or something? But you can better judge if that was just a singular accident and it would be overkill.

VERY interested to see where you take this lq.

Like the other anon said, getting rid of that crease on the ground is about all you need to do. I use colored posterboard that I buy at the hardware store for $1 per sheet. It's stiff enough that you don't get creases like that.

with this thing, but just realized i totally can't cram my entire street in there and still have space for the lights to hit the 'front of stage' and faces.
How 'deep' are you guys setups aproximately, or atleast how much distance/what angle do you have your buffered lights so the front of your scene doesn't get too dark?
Shooting just an object loose is kinda fine, but i didn't factor in that distance + whatever structure i want to put behind it.

Thanks! Being mistaken for LQ and kudos from LQ are as big of compliments as I can imagine.

I'll definitely go hunting for brown cardstock to replace the construction paper that's serving as the ground right now. The creases in the paper have bothered me as well. I'd also like to try putting some elevation changes into the ground, but I'm worried about whether it would make it difficult to stand minifigs without baseplates.

My table is about 30 inches deep as well, which has been useful. For lighting, I shine the big lamp straight at the back wall, turn on the ceiling light, and also turn on another bright lamp a couple meters to the left of the table. It's a bit haphazard, but now that I have backgrounds, proper lighting is next on the list.

Pic related to the general discussion because these are among my very first Legos. I received them in a shoebox of unsorted pieces from my babysitter's mom when I was 3.

And just looking at Bricklink now, apparently there was only one of these in 6970, so it seems like my babysitter must have had TWO of that set. Wish I had gotten those sweet trans-yellow jumbo windows and aerials, but I think these are the coolest pieces in the set.

No doubt its a beautiful set and its hard to see 1600 pieces when looking at it. For $100 9 years ago it was a steal. I would have bought like 4 of them for parts in making a period piece village. But for 200-230 its pretty pricey brand new these days. If watched extensive reviews and the builds are easy to mimic outside the unique things like cows and medieval pieces. That varies on the store if they chose to put them on the shelves. Some keep sets in the back and refuse to release early. Since its a liscensed set its probably got an embargo so they might not be allowed to. Non licensed they can sell whenever they please as long as its in stock.

That's beautiful, but the dark brown hills look off.
The pictures from back in the day mostly use only shades of orange (getting lighter as they get farther from the camera), and sometimes the closest layer is the same color as the ground.

The only exciting ones were the trumpet and "keep out" tile for me since guns were also in Adventures sets which seemed much more exciting at the time, and frankly still do. Western is fun on a concept level but asides from the sheriff's office the actual sets were fairly boring. The fort was painfully monotonous compared to simiarly sized castle, adventures or underwater sets which were in stores at the same time, and I'm still not sure why it's the most popular set with collectors now considering how it's like 3/4 just these textured brown panels. Is it because civil war is that big of a deal in the USA or something?

Sure some people complain, quite often infact, about Nexo Knights but I'm glad we had the theme. I find it works quite well with my space displays. I just bought a trio of these torsos to create a repair crew for my cargo bay. Good stuff.

Those textured brown panels is no different than every castle set using panels in the 80s and 90s. Yes Western is about the most American theme there is. It doesn't really have much to do with the civil but more the fact that western theme is rooted in the history of the country as well as hollywood movies. For Adults, yeah the civil war is very popular among history buffs. Most casualties in US history. I did in fact do a Civil War moc when I was 10.

Problem with Nexo Knights is it has very little resemblance of castle theme. Okay fine, give a sci-fi twist to castle, but don't change every piece to the point where I can't buy it for parts to make a non-sci fi castle. I don't want super futuristic armor. Some brown and black would help too. But you need quite a bit of bricks.
Maybe that was the problem, maybe making a decent castle isn't possible for LEGO within their modern part budget, and I've heard gray is a particularly expensive colour for them to make, tho idk if that's true.

I think the obvious solution is to make castle ruins. I don't know how that would work in the new facade only era, but they could do an old school 3 dimension castle if it were in ruins and didn't have to completed. Other option would be even bigger 'cheater' panels like with rock facings, but for large sections of towers and walls. They have to do it for boats.

Gray can't possibly be one of the more expensive colors for how incredibly often it is used as filler where white or black or any other neutral color would work.

I've been wishing for this for a long time. The key would be to sell the modules in packs. Make $10-$15 range "booster" packs with generally useful filler modules, and a "starter pack" in the $40-$60 range that has all the specialized modules to make a very limited but complete castle that could be expanded with the other parts. You could round out the theme with specialized bigger modules, like a 2-3 length section of wall with fencing for horses, a training dummy/weapon rack/archery target corner, or a tall stylized wizarding tower. You could of course go beyond the modular system and just rebuild however you want since it's lego. I don't think it would work with kids, but the mine craft-y modularism might work.

But I guess that's the thing with having to make it entirely modular, you're incredibly restricted by what you can do for each module as they have to be covered in attachment points.

That way you could build wall sections that can clip into towers and stairs etc that can clip onto the walls, rather than having everything clip onto everything and ending up with a shitton of 8x8 squares.

Not really, castles IRL are a bunch of buildings with a big fortress in the middle and just random buildings inside. You could essentially make 1 or 2 types of wall, 1 or 2 types of towers, and then random medieval style buildings or a big main expensive set for the keep, and the rest could literally be just small filler packs.

I think modular "limitation" is fine if it's the hook that gets kids into castle. You can always rebuild however you want. There is nothing to stop you from using 8x16 modules in an 8x8 system. They key is just some sort of standardized connection point.

I think the bigger problem is that this idea really appeals to AFOLs because it focuses on the castle, where as kids and lego are currently focused on mini figs and play features. I'm not saying you couldn't have modules with play features, but the figs alone would drive the price up too far. It goes against their policy of not letting you buy what you actually want a la carte. Everything must be pre-bundled. We'll never see a $100 castle without without 6+ figs eating up a hefty chunk of the budget.

Something that I will never understand is why castle building in Minecraft is appealing to kids but castle building in LEGO isn't, it just don't click to me and it hasn't been so long since I was a kid.

Maybe because it's expensive? Kids in LEGO world are out there building fuckhuge things and that includes castles, so maybe is the fact that most kids just can't afford enough pieces for a cool castle?

Also maybe they could reduce price if they make most of the minifig generic, I don't know, I don't really get why the minifig price has gone up so much recently, I can only think that it must be an artificial inflation because there's no way the extra print is really that expensive.
