I once asked Greg and he said it's not canon, because he didn't want to spoil Vakama's betrayal. But Lego already kinda did with this image, so it was pointless to keep it secret. Then the movie trailers hit and they outright showed Vakama being evil. So, nice going, marketing agency.

Sets sold like shit, the minis weren't all that great, etc. It was a neat idea, and in the case of the mahri sets, allowed for some physical representations of stuff we may not have gotten otherwise.

Yeah, but his shield and the Volitak were great, not to mention the sleek new armor. I hated Nuparu all the way until I bought him. He then became one of my favorites.
Hewkii's build was trash but his color scheme was cool (not as good as Hewkii Inika's, though) and he had actual weapons. Kongu's colors were a bore and he had no real weapons, and his build betrayed everything a Toa of Air should be. Both Kanohi were pretty good, though the Garai was certainly very odd.
For me it's:

Jaller > Nuparu = Hahli* => Matoro > Hewkii => Kongu

* Not taking brittle lime joints into account

Since it fits the edition, here's my current progress in bricklinking all the big Rahi from 2001. Not pictured are the two boxes where about 80% of the parts for Muaka & Kane-Ra and Manas are already gathered and waiting for completion.
I also cobbled together some leg extension thingies for the Nui-Jaga because it's kinda ridiculous how their default legs don't even reach the ground.

It was only ever officially recolored into dark red for a Agori mount.

Could be a bootlegged piece for all I know, but if that background is exactly who I think it is, it's more likely to be simply painted.

Considering the mold was also used once in the Vikings theme, I'm sure there's plenty to go around, heresy aside.

I sent him PM's asking for his involvement with pushing "voloctoreb" and those lists he mentioned, I've yet to receive a reply.

When the rumors of "voloctoreb" first appeared on the /lg/ thread he was quickly to come to the /biog/ discord and started promoting the idea that not only there was some credibility to the "voloctoreb" but that he was someway connected to the person leaking that info on the first place. Needless to say, we laughed Azani out of the discord server and right away after he started spreading the thing on TTV messageboards, this time appaering like he had dropped the act of being connected to the leaker and was merely just trying to "inform" people about the leak.

If you ask me, it looks like he's playing a long con.

It's a very unrefined design compared to the 2005-2006 golden age Titans, and some proportions are awkward, but he's a formidable bad guy that looks unlike any set we've ever gotten. 2/3 of the sets that make him up are pretty lackluster anyway. I'd say try building him, his size alone is enough to impress you.
Make sure you have his Kanohi though. He looks pretty shit otherwise.

A few years back I bought a big bin of assorted 2001-2004 bionicles at a church's "community yard sale" type thing. It was a good deal, however I noticed that even with a plethora of toa and other sets, there wasn't a single weapon or anything.

I only realized recently that whatever kid owned these must have had some crazy church parents that didn't let him use the weapons that came with the sets.

Bionicles had a very weird impact on church-folks when I was a kid. People were genuinely concerned about the spiritual side to the plot and how the whole elemental shtick could be Paganism in disguise or something. My parents were good about it because they understood that the whole "great spirit" thing was just fiction and a driver for the plot, but I remember overhearing them having serious discussions with other parents about whether or not Bionicles were satanic. The violence aspect of it was never an issue for me though. Everybody collectively understood that boys emulating violence while playing is usually totally benign.

Well some of them did have "hands" like tahu, pohatu, lewa, and arguably onua but they were still weird and strange-looking. Not just human-like hands. Something about that is just more appealing to me. The difference is as simple as holding a sword is mundane but having your arm BE the sword is crazy. Fits the fantastical setting better, imo.

I like to believe Gali Mata had hooks for hands. I know she canonically has actual hands you sorta just have to imagine, but older media clearly interpreted her tools as being extensions of her arms rather than just equipment. And honestly, I can't even imagine how a hand would work with the type of arm piece she has, from a functional standpoint it's such a clunky design.

I didn't mind a more outright bestial looking Makuta, and a dragon fit the demons/fallen angels/gods motifs of their species as well as Miserix's personality. Red wasn't exactly the first thing I think when I hear leader of the Brotherhood (black and gold was more like it for me), but that's ok.

It's that, he looks so shitty. Boring color scheme (too bright and lack of contrast) and a staff that make no sense because why the hell should a dragon need weapons? He should look powerful and scary, but he just looks sort of goofy and cute.

Technically Farhstey has a different concept of Bionicle, where the sets are just toy representations of the actual characters. For me of course it's the other way around, and the canonical appearance is those of the toys. Fuck Greg.

Hughes, not all of them just a couple of Pohatus, Lewas, and one Onua of the Toa and a couple of other guys. I think the instructions were mostly recycled for the Rahi Master Builder Set from 2002. Though there are a few Rahi builds in the game that were never officially unveiled, like the Fikou Nui and the wolfrat or whatever it's called.

Both are viable.
Using the Mata hands results in bigger hands if you want fingers.
The fist piece always looks extra clunky and has worse articulation. I prefer the Mata hands because I like their look and they're more customizable.
The fists can be used for limbs n shit too, though I haven't tried to do that yet

The Glatorian hands break easily while the HF hands lack the mechanical details. They're both crap if you ask me. The carpal connection is a LEGO hole further than it should be. The ball should be connecting to almost the middle of the palm like in the Metru Nui movies.
But at the same time I can't go back to the G1 "hands" either. And adding fingers on T bars just makes them look weird. I'm against heresy but an anon with a stupid Rahkshi oc posted a heretical tutorial for hands a while ago that looked good. I made a pair and they are great. Some people have made hands with system pieces and mixel joints.

If anyone's still in the dark, I'll be crazy clear: it's the construction community. Holy crap, it sucks. It's not one person on their own, but the vibe that gets tossed around when a group of folks aren't really sure what they're after. I don't usually say this, but it's like a giant circlejerk. I used to believe that the folks who went on about how toxic and temperamental the community was were just misinformed. Now, in the casual AFOL community, I cam't fathom why I'd ever want to go back.

Now, a funny thing happened today. It shouldn't surprise anyone to see that every guy who's been calling me out has one thing in common. No posts outside of this useless constraction figure forum. No interest in LEGO - just in this fringe community, where nothing ever happens and nothing ever will.

I wonder if anyone's ever tried adding the hand piece to the pre-glatorian sets. The early Toa look fine as they are but I feel they'd look pretty neat on the other Inika build sets.

I think some of his set mods are a bit questionable (like when he rebuilt Tahu Master using Kopaka's build), yet he has some really good ideas. I didn't know he made a Mata series, but they look pretty good.

I believe it's because our interest in LEGO has to do with a component of our psyche. Constractionfags are micro-oriented. We are interested in individuals. Characters. Systemfags are macro-oriented. They are interested in building the world and environments. The vehicles and buildings.
As such the two groups tend to attract two different categories of individuals, though system also offers more customizability. Think of it as the guy who likes to roleplay versus the guy who likes to DM. Of course this doesn't apply to hybrid builders and systemfag character builders.

I admit I like to focus on the characters when mocing and reading stuff about Bionicle in general, but funnily enough when it comes to rpgs I'm the DM guy. Enviroment is my shit, and it's also one of the things I like the most in Bionicle to be really honest (I'm more curious about Metru Nui rather than about the Toa Metru's stories). To make things even werdier, I really don't like System. It doesn't "speak" to me, I don't know how to explain it otherwise. On the other hand, each and every Bionicle piece is "telling" me something.
