So, when was the last time we had an Army Men thread?

Feel free to post any type of those little plastic figures. Army men, Cowboys & Indians, Spacemen, Police Officers, Ninja Men, Knights, Pirates, or other toys of a similar nature.

I've heard they've brought back Tim Mee as a brand recently.

Most of the Chinese Dollar Store Army Men you find these days are cheapo clones of either Tim Mee or Airfix figures from the 1970's and 1980's.

They don't mix well because gunpla is too scale demanding, at least for me. It looks weird having an RX-78-2 standing next to a bunch of guys who are way too big to fit in scale. Army men work better with transformers because they aren't that scale demanding and don't look out of proportion.

There are a couple more kits like that, and I think all of the Real Grade kits come with a tiny 1/144th pilot figure, but that's about it, unfortuantely.

Addendum: The reason why I mentioned Army Men specifically is because most modern Army Men you get at the dollar stores and Wal-Marts are usually cheap Chinese clones of Tim Mee and Airfix Vietnam figures, so they already have the right look for a very low price.

Which helps out a lot considering how much anything Gunpla-related costs.

I thought this might be relevant to the thread.
Back in 1991 Dragon magazine made a game where Army Men are pitted against an invasion of Dinosaurs- a game anyone could play with cheap dollar store toys.

DINO WARS! allows you to use any army men & plastic dinosaurs you have lying around to re-enact both childhood play and lost-in-time B-movie action, only this time with dice, tape measures, and shiny rules instead of just your lousy imagination. It is really geared towards two-sided battles, humans vs. dinosaurs, but you can have as many players as you have room and figures for per side.

Sounds similar to when I was a kid in the late 90's and early 2000's, I would often play "Jurassic Park" and have my Army Men and my Dinosaurs on the porch fighting each other in battles.

I love when /toy/ and /tg/ overlap.

Also, does anybody remember the Cowboys & Indians figures from back in the day. I owned a lot of those back in the 90's as a kid, second only to Army Men in terms of how many figures I owned.

You could easily use Cowboys & Indians as miniatures in a game like Boot Hill or something.

15mm miniatures work with 1/100 scale gundams. 15mm is fairly cheap too, like $20 will get you a full platoon.

But Gundam-wise, you gotta stick with model kits or expensive stuff like Metal Builds.

Every single unit of army men in my collection is named and classified by unit size, with designated officers. Probably one of the most prestigious units is the Afrika Korps, hardened veterans of the Desert War and many more illustrious campaigns.

This battalion of Canadian light infantry has also fought in countless battles and covered itself in glory every time. Originally they were just enough in number to form one short-strength company; now they're a hundred men strong.

Side note, my unit classification system doesn't follow real world standards as those are intended for armies numbering in the tens of thousands or more. My plastic armed forces are organized as follows:

>Squad: up to a dozen men roughly
>Platoon: two Squads roughly
>Company: two Platoons roughly
>Battalion: two-three Companies roughly
>Brigade/Division: two or more Battalions; Brigade and Division are used interchangeably

Units above the Squad level are not officially subdivided into their own smaller units but can be done so if necessary, thanks to the command structure.

Bought these for $10 a piece from Toys R Us since they're going out of business. They also had knight and monster versions. The army set is very basic, but nice plastic and clean molds.

The pirate set is pretty cool. Comes with skeleton pirates and pretty nicely detailed mercenary type figures. I was surprised at how well they avoided cliche pirate designs. I'll post some detailed pics of the figures later. Also had a neat bridge, some nice trees, three boats with poseable oars, plus some other random accessories. I recommend grabbing this one.

The poses are neat, though with only seven different ones it feels limited.The accessories are nice, I like the bridge piece and columns and I'd never seen candlesticks before. The dragon reminds me of the one in that Robot Chicken segment with the Olson twins, heh.

They're from the True Heroes line, same as the sets here>>6875637 I also got a canister of pirates and two of the medieval knights set. The latter were more for the accessories as I already have plenty of the knights included; the mangonel, battering ram and cannon are pretty sweet.

I tend to go for 25mm or thereabouts. Mostly because that's the smallest Army Men I can find. But they fit in with loads of figures.

I put them with MegaBloks Halo stuff, where the Halo guys are power suits.

I put them with Robot Damashii, HG Gunpla and other similarly sized robots, like Revoltech. In this case, they pilot Labor sized mechs as opposed to full on Gundam.

They also go well with some Transformers, depending on the Transformer's alt mode. I mean, you can't go wrong with putting anything with Trypticon.

Does anybody still make Ninja army men-style figures?

I have seen pictures of Ninja figures that were made back in the late 1970's and early 1980's during the ninja movie craze that was going on at the time, most notably the now out-of-production "Master of Ninja" set.

But does any of the remaining manufacturers make any clones of these ninja sets or new sets of their own?

Also, I'd prefer if the Ninjas came in black or gray.

Funny you mention it, I bought some plastic ninjas just the other day from Dollar Tree. The caveat is they're oversized, about 3 times bigger than the average army men. Got them mainly cuz it was something new and they can serve as ninja giants.

They'll fit in well with the ninja I already possess.

It's from an old board game called Siege (here in Canada anyway, elsewhere it's known as Weapons & Warriors). Was picking up so many from garage sales I had to sell a few along to save space; still have three sets of the castle version and two of the pirates one.

Forgot to add that the castle in the setup was assembled from four Siege sets. Each set comes with one castle wall flanked by towers, and a freestanding tower at the back.

Hadn't been to the Dollar Tree by my house for a while. Last time I went they only had some packs of teal and tan guys with no accessories, which I have several packs of already. To my surprise, they had a pretty cool little selection of things now. Basic army men set.

This one is much cooler. The trolling motor detaches from the boat and pivots. Nice variety of figures. The helicopter has a nice hard see through plastic for the glass. I should have bought two of these.

This set is sweet. I got two of them. The wagon and horse articulates really well, and comes apart. Although, the driver is attached to the wagon. The figures are meh, and not that many, but I bought two of these for the wagons.

My favorite piece is actually this little cooking pot and fire. It has nice little details like rope binding where the pieces attach. It swings nicely when it's put together.

Also bought a couple bags of Tim Mee's Galaxy Laser Team figures. Pretty fun campy designs. They remind me of the designs from early sci-fi serials. One of the molds is clearly a Buck Rogers clone.

The lid of the bucket has a spot to set this skull piece, the backside of which has ledges for treasure chests and figures. The handle is a bridge for pieces to stand on. It may be hard to tell, but there's actually an inch of water under the bridge. It holds just fine. You can even have pieces floating in it face down and they'll bob around like corpses.

They make great stuff, buying direct from TimMee seems rather steep though. For a lot of my collecting years I've focused on quantity over quality, cuz if I'm getting plastic soldiers, I'd like an army's worth if possible heh. More recently I've shifted away from that mindset some, had to downsize my collection by a few thousand men for physical space reasons, still have thousands more to wage a good-sized plastic war.

Yeah they're great, just wish it was easier to raise substantial numbers of Red Army troops, my lone unit is barely battalion size whereas my Germans, British/Commonwealth, American and even Japanese number in the divisions.

I love how that set also includes a 19th century artillery piece in matching camouflage, I mean yeah things got desperate on the Eastern Front but I think that's going a bit far heh.

That's not hobby paint. Have you tried any Tamiya products? They have brush on and spray primer. Even rustoleum from a hardware store works, that stuff really sticks.

I had a shot period when I painted everything in black using a permanent marker, because it made things "cool".

Army Men are the most redpilled toy. They speak about how on the surface, they can seem disposable, but to the certain individual, they can be more. I had a lot of toys growing up, but Army Men were probably my favorite. Orchestrating giant battles and campaigns was normal. These things would go hand-in-hand with digging RTS games and so far as joining the Army later in life. I just love soldiers, soldiering, and toys that capture the bigger scale of battle.

I don't really collect them, but once taking the kids to the zoo, I found a green army man, lost under some leaves when we sat down for lunch in an amphitheater like environment. I picked it up, made some comments about it, laughed a little.. But instead of throwing it back to the ground, I kept it.. No man left behind! I brought it home, and kept it for when the kids were older and had their own Army Men, this one could rendezvous with a unit and get back in the fight!

I'll dig around, anon. I know that guy is somewhere packed up.

I gave up so many of my toys as I grew up but my armies expanded, became more elaborate, more organized. At its height my plastic armed forces counted easily over ten thousand men.. but then I hit an extended period of stagnation, marked by significant downsizing of the collection. Up to that point my younger brother and I had waged plastic wars together for many years, but then he started to drift away in his interests and I'd withdrawn into my own world for a while. When I reemerged I had to change my previous mentality of quantity first (to be able to throw endless numbers of men into battle) to smaller, more space-conservative collecting. Sold off a good chunk of my armies, but my forces still number in the several thousands, with a better soldier-to-vehicle ratio.

The fore-mentioned stagnation happened largely because army men have slid into a valley popularity-wise: fewer places carry them, and what does show up in stores is often the cheapest, most generic, poorest quality, most cloned/copied stuff. I'd lived overseas a lot as a kid and it seemed army men were way more popular there, I loved hitting up the regular street flea markets because someone somewhere always had second-hand soldiers for sale, good ones too. The only time in the last ten years of being back in Canada that I remember seeing anything like that here was surprisingly enough at the corner convenience store down the street; they had half an aisle of toys and among them was a bag of WW2 German Afrika Korps, which I had to snap up. Really miss those days, hope that the valley climbs back into a mountain someday, so that new generations of would-be generals can experience the joys of plastic warfare.

I had a bunch of small soldiers when I was a kid, smaller than regular green army men. They were pretty detailed for its size and were hard not soft plastic. I had japanese, germans, americans and what I now realize must have been australians.

Any one knows or remembers those? about one or half a centimeter in size.

Here's Australian, German and Japanese infantry alongside a quarter and a normal-sized soldier for scale. These guys all came from a Dollar Giant on the other side of town, a huge store that lived up to its name and was a rare treasure trove of army men stuff. As well as all those little troops and some pretty nice Panzer IIIs, one of the most interesting items they had were packages of cowboys and indians, mostly for the fact that many of the packages had a few WW2 British infantry mixed in for some reason. Bought every pack they had like that, got enough Brits to form a company. Then Dollar Tree came along, gobbled them up and they stopped being fun...

Anyway, these guys were as cheap as they come, I got hundreds for a few bucks. What's nice about them is they're specific WW2 armies and not over-produced, over-cloned generic guys. Most of the poses are also action poses, ideal for just having massive battles without having to worry about where you'll stick the twenty surplus binoculars guys. Sadly these armies of mine have never tasted battle, I've always prefered their larger brothers but I owe them an epic setup someday.

I dont collect gazillions of army men myself because my dad insisted I chuck my big bag of them back as a teen but this anon pretty much points out every reason why army men are superior toys.

Cheap, disposable, huge variety, massable and represents a real army; not some censored down kiddie action team.

I own tons of mega bloks figures who are the size of army men but better sculpted, posable, infinitely customisable and also big on variety.

They are more expensive of course but quality vintage army men or those more authentic army men from scale model makers would cost at least as much anyways.

The randomness of chinese bootleg army men dont appeal to me but the sci fi/vidya inspired army men or ninjas etc posted here look awesome.

I do still own some army men however. Roughly 1/72 scale ones that go perfectly with my matchboxes and diecast tank models. My only toys aside from Lego and some corps action figures to survive my dads great toy purge

sorry for asking this here but the 1:18 thread is casual as fuck and you guys seem more autistic in a good way.

I'm trying to build myself a mechanized platoon of Cobra forces (enemies of gi joe) I already have 3 transport vehicles, like Sdkfz 251, and one tank and about 12 troops. Each transport needs a driver and a gunner, each tank can accomodate 3 crew and each troop carrier can accomodate five troopers. Appart from the evident shortage of manpower, What else is a must have for it to be a complete platoon? How should it be organized? Heavy weapons? should I add another tank? five guys are a squad, do each squad needs a heavy gunner, AT rocket man and officer?

Like use your imagination to do w/e you want but like a platoon would only be around 40 guys or 3-4 afvs. Platoons are the smallest armoured unit with around three plus a company hq (with some support vehicles and comms) making up an armoured company.

Then three of these plus a battallion hq (which is where you can start chucking in scout cars and some logistical vehicles). A few battallions would after that, create your tank regiment.

Unfortunately mechanised infantry or artillery would be in separate battalions/companies from this regiment all attached together under the armoured division.

Ofc you could just use your imagination and have a mech inf company and a tank company in one battalion and own only one platoon from each.

Also, authentic 1:18 vehicles? Sounds expensive and huge.

I love platoon sized elements.
A infantry platoon of Sdfz 251's is made up of 3 troop transports or "hanomags" 10 in each (30 total). Whereas a normal rifle gruppe is made up of about 40 riflemen.
1 leader and assistant leader for the command squad. 1 light machine gunner, 2 assistant gunners and at least 4 to 8 riflemen per squad for the remaining 2 squads.
Anything more than the above and you're cutting into a company/task force sized element.
Depending on the commander or unit type like SS, panzergrenadier or luftwaffe the unit can have squads as small as 5 per truck.
As far as heavy weapons go on the ground, usually the trucks can be used as moveable heavy weapons fighting positions.

A tank gruppe would more likely to be a support element and not included within the platoon. Tanks typically travel as security and in groups.

I believe it was a not real tank, but loosely based on a real tank. But the fact that it was army men leads me to believe it was more realistic than non. It was the green army coloring. I also had the Walker bulldog tanks so those weren't the ones.

Both Walmart and Target sell their little lines of army men. Corpshit which is more expensive, larger versions of green army men, and Target seems to be carrying World Peacekeepers and shitty bbi army men.
Walgreens sells packs of green army men still.

Comic shops also carry Destiny figures, plus Aliens stuff, and all manners of specialty figures that you can usually only find online.

And she's pretty much perfect in 1:18 scale. In scale they're about 6'3" and ODST are know for being the biggest and baddest until the Spartans were created, so it works.

Purple guy is Toy Notch's Nevec trooper from Lost Planet. I have a few of him, but only had that guy out because i just bought him, along with some Acid Rain figures.
This mech is also from Toy Notch's Lost Planet line.

And this is why army men are better for epic-scale warfare, they all come pre-equipped and pre-posed, ready to be set up for battle. Not sure why you're in this thread and not one of the threads for your preferred style and scale, there's really no relation between army men and action figures.

And preposed shit is preposed shit. Yeah, they're easier to set up, but figures suitable for one part aren't suitable for the next action. It kills any action where my hero figure can't pilot the escape helicoptor, has a fist fight that dooms the helicopter into a thick jungle, needs to avoid enemy search parties, and uses artillery to set traps for them. All while an extraction team is fighting their way to him.
You can't have week long story battles with green army men.

preposed shit are single note for simplistic battles. I moved away from green army men a long time ago because of how cheaply made they are, but i use minis like from Flames of War for simplistic battles... without actually playing the game.
My favorite green army men figures when i was a kid were actually Airfix miniatures that were sold in a plastic bag at Target for one year back in the 80s.

anyway, i was in the thread to tell some guy he's overreacting because he can't find cheapo dollar store quality army men in stores. There's higher end alternatives that are found easier than cheapo shit if he and other kids want to act out their masculine action fantasies. Something that kids can identify with better, thanks to pop culture, than historical play forms. And by historical, i mean fantasy, because kids dont know shit about history.

Just controllng my character isnt' as fun as playing with dozens and dozens of figures, especially when i have someone else to play with to oppose and add his story to mine.

Me, my brother, and my friends would play with our toys in my backyard, ontop of a hill, over the yard, and in the back-back yard's terraces.
It was like playing a RPG RTS, but without a dungeon master.

My brother still tries to do this with his daughters, but they're stereotypical girls no matter how hard he tries to get them into action figures, even using cartoons to try and motivate them.
He wishes he had a son.

I say Arma 3 because you can control your entire force if you have a scenario setup where you are playing as the highest ranking/tiered character.

There are also pretty good dynamic scenarios that play out like rts games from first person perspective that give you more control over your team.

There is also Zeus mode that let's you play as a dungeon master style perspective where you can spawn in forces for all sides of a battle and take over any unit to play in first person.

The game is pretty decent, and the airport is pretty interesting. It really makes me feel like I'm playing with GI Joe's or army men, as you can craft your own story from multiple perspectives along with a robust mission maker and multiplayer/coop. I should add that the Zeus mode let's you actively spawn in forces/vehicles at any point in the game. You can control them like an rts game while in observer free fly Zeus mode. Just know that unless you set a unit to careless attitude, they will act as if they are receiving orders from a higher up and act with self preservation in mind. The ai for Arma is pretty badass.

Today I decided to check Wal-Mart's toy section for some GI Joe figure or some type of WWII figure and to my surprise there are absolutely no war toys at all! Not even any model kits. I remember Wal-Mart carrying war/soldier toys in my childhood so what the hell happened? I've checked Hobby Lobby for the German infantry kits by Tamiya and nope. Only tanks and planes.

I'll be sad if the next GI Joe line isn't a hit, and would be pretty surprised too, given that GI Joe did sell well and only really got fucked up by Paramount being afraid of Marvel.

Toys are important for developing the masculine or feminine social roles young boys and girls will need in their future. It internalizes it for them and allows them to build character. Those other anons had great points. It's completely related to army soldier toys.
