Indeed, unfortunately it's 4 or 5 bucks just to get one and you might end up getting one of the other 3 Puppycorns, though if you're also after the blue ones it's not so bad.

Can't wait for them to start showing up on Bricklink, though I hope sellers are kind with the prices.

this is from 194, some anon said there were instructions that got deleted but I can't confirm that, the whole blog is awesome, there is some kind of connection with Toa-ju but google translate doesn't help with that.

you could in theory mill the triangular bit off and have a neat right angle piece with a trans lateral oiece idk lol

The claw foot can only be that. I would've liked it if they made it into one of those feet that you could pop a t-axle socket into.
The leg with the triangles always seemed like a cheap part to me. though I am glad they eventually introduced armor/shells you could cover it with.
The hips and single ball joint arm I always had an issue with simply on my part. It's an autistic irritation really.

I wouldn't say I hate them, but I'm annoyed by lot of big or overspecialized pieces that would work better if Lego had separated them into two or more parts. Imagine how much more useful the Hordika tools would be if their hilts were separate from the rubbery bits. Matau's blade or Vakama's flame would be great to have on their own.
And instead of the Visorak shells being giant single parts with all that junk, imagine if there was a standard base shell used for all Visorak, with the head ornaments being separate parts that attach via pins. You could use those as wrist-mounted blades or as generic armor add-ons.
Also, it would be nice if pistons had a uniform size and better placement to support clip-on pieces.

And obligatory: '08 style joints.

it's up to personal preference for the most part, but Brutaka is often cited as the best Titan set because of his solid build, great colour scheme, very well integrated hidden feature and generally awesome design

most Bionicle sets came out in waves of 6 different-coloured good / bad guys
my personal favourite good guys are the 2001 Toa Mata, favourite bad guys are the 2007 Barraki by far

Brutaka is a great example of a later titan set but I also love the Rahi sets from the earllier years that mad more complex and function centric builds one of my favorites is Jaller and Gukko from 2003

The kraakhan from the ultimate dume set. It required a ridiculous setup to attach to the toa mata head, so it was basically unusable in any MOCs if you wanted to have an eye color piece behind it.

I think that Mata head works better on masks like Miru and noble Huna that show good amount of the face, but other than that I use all heads whenever I feel like it.

Mata heads are better with 2001-2003 style masks for sure, but using any future masks with these heads means that you lose out on one of the axle holes in the back.
Also, the brainpieces are stupidly hard to take out, there's no reason for them to stick in there that hard. God forbid you want to replace the head or the brain for whatever reason, like if you want a different colored head or eyes, or if either of the parts somehow breaks/becomes unusable (the latter happened to a Tahu Nuva I ordered; the head's mouth was broken. I barely managed to take the brainpiece out, and when I finally ordered a new head I realized too soon that it was the wrong shade of gray.)

why do you vouch for the Mata heads so strongly?

So are there any good technic sets out there? I'm not interested in any of the System sets they have right now and I've kinda stopped following Lego after Bionicle G2, mostly because I'm not interested in most licensed sets, the few original themes they do have don't interest me personally, and the Star Wars figures are ugly and too expensive.

I've never really had many Technic sets and I'm considering getting one, since the building style looks more complex.

I'm using this as a leg joint where the thigh meets the groin its useful because it's got the axel connection as well as ability to connect beams coming out the top of the head for really beefy legs

I know you said you weren't interested in star wars but the old technic destroyer is really an engineering marvel. Not only is the look pretty spot on but it is one of only a couple destroyer droid toys to be able to roll into a ball like in the film.

Everyone always talks about the later humanoid titans, but to me this set easily trumps most of them for its uniqueness. Granted, it's not that eye-catching and the build is barely more than a flimsy wireframe, but consider:

It depends on the size and wheter you prefer aesthetics or functions.

Brutaka is generally regarded as the best G1 set, at least in the "big guys" category, and he's my personal favourite of all times. Amongst canister sets, the Toa Metru, the Toa Mahri and the original Toa Mata are equally praised for various reasons. Other great sets are Takanuva 2008, the Bohrok, Glatorian Legends, Rahskhi, Hydraxon and Maxilos.
If you like functions above everything else, there's only one reasonable answer: 2001 Rahi. The Bahrag are cool too, and the 2008 vehicles are a decent compromise.

As far as G2 is concerned, the Toa Masters and Uniters are the pinnacles of what the fandom always wanted. Complex builds with great posability and functions, along with excellent aesthetics. The Protectors are stellar too.

I think the head having a male connection is one of its very few real problems. I've always appreciated how Lego designed it so you could use it with 2001-2002 Kanohi: that system had been abandoned by the time the Toa Metru came out so they had no reason to provide backwards compatibility, and yet in truest Lego spirit they did.

On its own, it's a bit ugly, and it came only in one color, which is pretty lame. But you're almost never going to need a maskless head anyway, and it is to this day the most versatile head they ever produced.

If you count them, the Karzahni set also used Metru green Hordika Vakama heads, 08 Takanuva had darkgrey Takadox heads, and Von Nebula had a black Hydraxon mask, but those barely count really.

The reason these things usually look bad to me is their bad headsculpts and bad proportions with skinny-ass limbs. This guy looks good cause the cloth helps cover his skinnier bits, he has a nice helmet sculpt, and the boots give the visible part of his legs some good chunky proportions. In short, his design works around all of the shortcomings of this line.

So how do the silver masks work? From what I understand, there were 6 of each mask hidden around Mata Nui (by the Turaga I guess), a full set for each of the Toa to collect. But were they hidden in a way so that each set of masks would be found by every Toa, or just sporadically in hard to reach areas? No one Kanohi is destined to a certain Toa, right? For example, if Onua found and tried to wear the Onu-Wahi Akaku before Tahu, would he be able to use it? I'd assume yeah because I read somewhere that they shared the masks before each one had a full set, but do they revert back to the silver state when removed? Why don't any other Kanohi turn silver while not worn, besides arguably the Ignika? If the masks do bind to the element or Toa who wears them first, does that mean the sharing of masks is figurative, like using a Pakari to move something heavy for a Toa without the strength to move the object? Or is the "sharing" thing from a non-canon source?

Each Toa starts off with their own iconic mask, and they are each tasked with completing their own complete set of masks. This means that EACH Toa starts off with one mask, and must collect the five others they are missing. If one Toa required assistance in completing their task, they were always able ask for help from their partners, which sometimes involved a Toa temporarily lending their mask to the other Toa so that they could retrieve the mask they were trying to obtain in the first place. Technically the Toa were meant to work together as a team, but they started out looking for the masks on their own. Like in the comics and books, Lewa has to look for a mask underwater, but doesn't think of asking Gali to help. Gali finds a mask on top of a mountain, but doesn't ask Lewa to help her. And so on. None of the hidden masks corresponded to any given Toa, but they were too stubborn or inexperienced to think of searching for them in groups.
The way Hapka originally wrote the first novel, the masks already had colors when not in use and they were meant for specific Toa to find, but she was asked to rewrite these scenes. So you are right, any Toa could find and use any of the hidden masks.

How the Legend of Mata Nui PC game would have figured into things if it had been canon, I don't know. In that game, only Onua starts out with his standard mask, and whichever masks he finds, he can "copy" them onto the other Toa's faces. So the Toa only have to find one of each mask and share them among themselves. This is not canon and I'm not sure if it was ever meant to be, but it's an interesting example of the various unexplored ideas that had been thrown around in '01.

This was clear only if you had access to any story material, something that sadly wasn't true outside USA/Canada. As an european, I found out about the whole "Metru Nui/1984" thing in like... 2010? Yeah, probably.
From the instruction booklets and from the promotional CDs, Metru Nui was just a "city with robots". For 10 years old me that was the shit, of course, especially since I began being abonkle fan in 2004. As I said Metru Nui's charm goes even deeper for me than Mata Nui, simply because I was there back then.

It is generic though. Bad? Not really, it's well composed. But it's not something that I would associate with Bionicle, that's for sure. You can slap orchestral music on anything and it will work for the most part, but it's by far one the cheapest ways to make something sound "epic". Maybe they thought MNOG-style techno wouldn't work, I personally think it would.

Different anon here, but for myself it was the Hordika that I couldn't bring myself to like anymore. Downgraded versions of the Metru build with even less color variety and badly incorporated boring functions. Still, I liked the colored weapons, and some of the headpieces were cool. The next year I just bought 1 Piraka and 1 Inika because I felt I was obliged to, and after that I dropped out of Lego for over a decade.

Am I the only one slightly annoyed that there's barely any fan art that shows recognizable pieces on the characters? In canon, they are able to take themselves apart and get rebuilt because their parts are just as compatible with each other as the real Lego pieces, but a ton of artwork ignores that. That also bothered me in the first two Miramax movies. Not so much the third because that one kept the characters closer to the sets with enough additions and modifications to make them look alive.

This was the last Bonkle I ever bought as a kid before I grew out of the franchise. When I heard about how the toyline was cancelled for good a couple years ago, I ended up digging my old collection from my closet and rebuilding them all. And recently, I got into the habit of reading the lore every once in a while on the wikis and even playing the shitty video games. Anyway, I'm just really sad that the franchise is over as soon as I got back into it. How do I cope with this feel, bros?

If it were so generic then how come I and many others can easily recall the soundtrack? It was memorable as hell, I honestly have no idea what you people are on about. Yes it's orchestral music but by no means is it generic or forgettable.

You can get the G2 sets? The sets were the best part of G2, and are some of my favorite builds in the entire series. Shame the second year of sets are so expensive now though, but if you part them out on Bricklink it should be muuuuch cheaper.

Personally, I'm collecting all the sets I never was able to get for one reason or another, and afterwards I might try making some mocs, who knows.

they just didn't do it often in the story to begin with. The Toa Mata had to put themselves together when they arrived on Mata Nui, the Boxors were made out of Bohroks, Karzahni had an entire realm where he'd shoddily rebuild his Matoran slaves (and some would escape to Voya Nui), etc.

Those, plus the Turaga show the McToran how to rebuild themselves into the '03 Matoran after the Kal arc, the Ussanui is made out of Rahkshi bits, and it's a plot point that the Shadowed One recognizes Krekka and Nidhiki's bodyparts on Makuta when he meets him.
And the way the Kaita formation is shown in MNOG and the scrapped PC game, that involved literal Lego building as well, granted, the canon qualities of these latter two scenes can be argued.

Toa Mata built themselves only because over the years their organic tissue has decayed.
The Bohrok were pure machines.
So were the Rahkshi, though they were more like a walking armour controlled by the Kraata.
Karzahni was supposed to be fixing and curing the Matoran, but he sucked at his jobs, so he rebuilt them into these mangled monstrosities.
Makuta had Krekka's and Nidhiki's bodyparts because, duh, he absorbed them.
Bionicle characters can't just swap their body parts as they want, keep in mind they are still biomechanical beings with muscles and so on. I guess they could rebuild *some* parts of their bodies, but it was never a thing in the story that their parts were interchangaeble like the Lego pieces (except for maybe that 2003 Matoran bit, but then again it looked more like they just got some implants and upgrades to their bodies, not like a total rebuild).

I really want to get into the Bionicle lore because it intrigues me and I love the toys, but I think I'm too autistic to understand it, or perhaps not autistic enough.
Here's my problem with it... the insane amount of jargon used is just unreal to me. It just throws me off so hard. What I mean is, every single character in this franchise, every species, every weapon, location, etc are all these mumbo-jumbo names. I get that the world is supposed to sound alien and all that, but I can't keep track of all these made up terms. It's insane how many there are. Every time I read a character or place name, I have to stop what I'm doing and google whoever the fuck it is to get a mental image in my mind. And more often than not, I end up googling all these stupid names more than actually reading the lore itself. It's overwhelming.
Please help.

I didn't mean their limbs and such should be easily swapped whenever they feel like it, only that I'd like to see some Lego-esque "visual compatibility" on the characters, like recurring, recognizable pieces which signify that they belong to the same world, instead of having them look like generic robots or armored aliens that may as well come from any other non-Lego franchise.
'Sides, Matoran rebuilding is clearly a thing regardless of how its specifics weren't elaborated on, and it's also referenced as late as 2008 with the rebuilding of Vultraz and Mazeka into Av-Matoran style bodies.

For instance, I have no problem remembering the names of 800+ Pokemon, what type they are, their general movesets and natures, etc. But there's something about the Bionicle universe that feels like a roadblock to me. From my limited perception, the vast majority of Bionicle characters just have very little distinct personalities and the only thing to distinguish one from the other is what color they are and what tribe they belong to. Otherwise most of them just kinda feel the same to me.

To be fair, a lot of the villager names from the early years were just words taken from random languages because they were featured as NPCs in an online game and therefor *had* to be named, even if they had no actual role in the story. And the earlier bits of the lore did go a little overboard with giving every little insignificant thing an exotic-sounding name because Lego was still trying to figure out how to build up their own franchise. They toned it down later.
There were some more descriptive names in the later years, though. Axonn has an axe, Vamprah is a vampire bat, Carapar has a carapace, and so on.

Bionicle was partially inspired by the success of Star Wars, and that had a fairly elaborate terminology. The difference is, when Lucas was making the first movie, he originally wanted to pump it full of all the fancy names and terms he had envisioned, but his colleagues told him to cut everything that wasn't absolutely necessary, otherwise audiences would already be confused before the text scroll was over. So he did, and he only kept the most necessary expressions in the movie, like "Jedi". But nobody told Lego that.

Thankfully the general sameness of some characters makes it so that distinction isn't really important to get the story. There are differences between types of vahki and visorak but which type gets thrown off a cliff or gets torn to pieces makes no actual difference.

There's usually only some basic stuff you need to know like the prefix system, and each story has its handful of names of actually important characters.
Generally it's toa, villains, bunch of other characters, important item, rinse and repeat next story.

I'd say just start from the very beginning and you generally get the hang of it pretty quick.

Imagine the 11-year old me finding out that most Ko-matoran in mnolg2 had fucking Finnish words for names. Literal translations of words like "ice", "freeze" and "glacier".

Overall these all sound cool, maybe I'll actually moc these someday, who knows. Only thing is that Nuju technically already had "ice picks" in his original Toa form, so perhaps something else. Maybe something like grappling hooks? But then that's something Toa Onewa already had too...Unless maybe the hooks could be fired out from blasters?

Hey /biog/, I'm in a need of advice.
Back in 2003 or something a friend from school gave me a Kanohi Vahi (flat gold) for some random colored Kanohi nuva. I thought it was a pretty good trade, but I wasn't happy how it looked on a Toa's face. So I bended the circled part inwards, which resulted in a noticeable discoloration in the said area. Looking at it now, is there any magic tricks to restore color to a sþretched plastic, or should I commit heresy and paint over it?

And yet they sounded better than post-2006 names. Finnish, Japanese, Italian and other languages meshed well with Maori. English and Latin didn't.

Many non-English and non-Latin inspired names from later years also had meanings, but in most cases they were probably just coincidences. I remember one old BZP post claiming that Krika was an obscure slang for cunt in some language.
