They were mutated by the Mask of Life, not the Pit Mutagen. Either way it's completely retarded though, as the sets are clearly meant to be air breathers in an underwater environment, hence the air pipes, air tanks and mask visors.

eh I kinda see it as a combination of both, but stuff like Hahli's claw and wings, Matoro's blade, and the fact that Jaller and Hewkii's masks sort of resemble the rest of their bodies, makes them feel like they've been somewhat mutated.

My question was basically, had they been completely normal Toa made the traditional way with Toa stones or some shit, what would their forms be like? Or if the Mahri were "purified" after Mahri Nui, or something.

I vaguely remember that it was somewhere stated that one's Toa form is based on what one believes Toa to look like. If that is true they'd probably look like Toa Mata/Nuva.

I mean, it's never implied the Mask of Life has a consciousness of its own until the first nameless rando from Jovan's team sacrificed himself. The comic also specifically states that Matoro's energies mingle and merge with the mask's and that "he is the mask, and the mask is him."

I like to think that Toa Ignika is kind of an amalgamation of the consciousness of both tributes. Its personality becomes more and more "human" (or lifelike) with every sacrifice.

Well, it's true the mask remembered Matoro and tried to be a hero like him, so part of his personality definitely rubbed off on it. Maybe I'm misremembering, but wasn't it also stated that the previous user of the Ignika felt horrible while he was burning up alive, because he wasn't completely willing to sacrifice himself? Whereas Matoro accepted his fate calmly and even spared some energy to save his friends. If so, I can imagine the other user made the mask feel too threatened and untrusting, hence why it called Vezon to itself and created some other messed up guardians, while Matoro showed it how to behave more level-headedly.

Hopefully it will receive some recognition, if they go over the company's history. David Robertson likes to talk about it in his presentations, though if they won't devote much time to older themes, it's just as possible that they'll use Ninjago as an example of a modern, successful media-fueled theme instead and just gloss over Bonkle. I'd like them to discuss it, though, since it was an important part of the company even if Constraction's dead. Other Lego documentaries have ignored it because they tend to have a narrower focus (talking about brick production or set design in general), but I assume this is a more inclusive show.

same here, though the kanohi ignika has a deeper history. It had a previous user that was in the same place as matoro, except the ignika of then could detect fear in him before he died. That characteristic was shown in the Ignika when it kept attempting to make defenders of it and sending a call for help to the toa inika. It would seem that the mask accumulates the memories and maybe even minds of those that have died and joined it while using it. So, its got a previous toa's mind, matoros mind, and mata nui's mind. A good question would be: how many souls are trapped inside the mask of life?

I applaud them for opening the path to different designs and body types among Toa/Toa-like characters, though some were less successful about it than others. But they're the only Toa team along the Toa Mata of which I like all six masks. That's quite a feat.

That about sums up how I feel towards these. Honestly, I wish these guys actually took the time to smooth out the renders before they put this shit up for sale. 90% of all custom kanohi on Shapeways look straight off of a PS2 character model and nowhere near actual Lego quality. Hell, most don't even offer them in the good materials. Just that grainy flexible shit instead of the acrylate or something. And don't even get me started on these retards never testing their models themselves before putting them to market. One guy tried making a finished version of that G2 Avohkii Cyberhand made and the fucking thing was like three times the size of any normal kanohi mask. All these guys just keep churning out all these subpar prints because they think quantity trumps quality; but oh boy are they wrong. Cyberhand's MoUP and MoT are and will remain the only masks I own from that site becuase while he was a shithead he was the only one who put more than half his ass into his pieces

I'd need to see some photos of them irl before I could say for certain, but I feel like at least some of the low poly is due to the Shapeways previews. When you look at them in the 3D view they look quite a lot smoother.

Personally think they look not bad. Definitely my favorite out of all the other theoretical masks up on shapeways. The Noble Akaku is the only one I'd consider shit though, it's literally just a plate.

They don't look too bad from pics, but if I ever got them I'd get them in the "white premium strong&flexible polished" version and spraypaint instead, even if that option is more expensive. The default colors offered by shapeways are crap, and don't even come in the "premium" quality anyway.

Personally I'm not particularly experienced with painting parts, however the general consensus I've heard is that enamel or acrylic paints are usually the best choices. note: these are paints, not sprays.
I will have to do some more extensive research myself, but if anyone else would like to share some advice I'd be glad to hear it.

Very overrated and far from being the best ones in the business. Their Inika masks were alright, though a bit too evil looking I think. But goodness are the other ones bad. Half of them look like they melted, the other half don't even look like masks.
There are far better masks makers on Shapeways, even not counting CyberHand.

I mean, I would also argue the Mata hordika look too much like their original masks to the point where they lose the original look the Metru Hordika had but that's just a taste thing. Most honestly look fine aside from the Noble Mata but I would imagine that different artists made different sets. The non Noble ones are smoothed out and look like they actually had effort put into them. The Noble ones are definitely crappy.

Ah, I guess I see what you mean yeah. The noble masks definitely are the lesser ones of them all, probably because they're the first models they made but I dunno. The Pakari and Kakama are definitely my favorite of the noble masks, and I don't think the polygons can't be fixed by sanding it down a bit but w/e.
As for the Hordika Pakari though, the vents gave off kind of an insect-like impression to me, which I thought was neat, but it could just be me.
I guess I'm not as critical because alot of the canon mask designs felt inconsistent to me too, so I don't expect them to be perfect; just pretty good. Guess that's my fault more than anyone's, lol

My biggest thing with the hordika masks is that the original ones we got had a general shape to them and these custom ones deviate heavily from that shape. Surface detailing should be the biggest thing that seperates them from one another as opposed to altering the entire skull shape heavily. The kaukau one having that weird hole at the top as an example of what not to do. I dunno. I feel like they could go for some updates.

I kind of liked the Hordika for some really, stupid pretentious reasons. Like, around the time they came out my childhood innocence was beginning to fade into that bitter preteen realization that the world isn't fun and adventure, it's actually really kind of shitty and a lot of people are total assholes for no reason.

So something about the bright heroism of the Toa descending into depressive, twisted monstrosity really appealed to me. I dunno. I was just in a slump. But I still remember the sets appealing to me because they kind of met me at my level, which with undiagnosed depression and crazy ADHD was really refreshing.

Hey I liked them too anon, you're not alone. My reasoning was more because I grew up with Small Soldiers toys alongside Bionicle. When the Hordika came out the idea of mutated freaks playing the anti heroes struck the same chord of mine that the Gorgonites did back in the day, and I love them for it. Hell, I even remember making the Parakrekks combiner and giving it a golden Keelerahk head and using it as a general in Sidoraks army my Matau and Nuji constantly fought with. Those were definitely simpler times.

The Hordika looked so bland because they and the Rahaga were the last examples of the old Metru Nui style (dark colors, not much contrast, lots of dark bley and silver); while the Visorak and the Titans marked the start of the new visual style, with bright colors making a comeback coupled with the new darker hues. If you look at it as a gradual evolution, I guess that the USA release schedule 2005 sets followed is the one that makes more sense.

Ok so this needs to be said. I don't have much love for the star wars building characters, but this range trooper ? It's pretty damn awesome. It looks so much more alive and finished than any other figure they put out in this line, grievous included. I love how you can use the pneumatic T in his back to store the gun using the storage for the spare missile. It was obviously not intentional but it works so well.

I only have two complaints about the set. The toa armor used on the feet doesn't look very good, but that's a problem of the piece, not really the figure. Also, you can't spread the legs more than 45 degrees from the sides, because the thigh armors block against the body. But apart from that, the cloth is awesome, the proportions are great (I still replaced the thigh bones with ones one module shorter after taking these pictures, because all the SW figs are too lanky) and he's damn fun to pose. Very recommended.

I liked them. The Piraka and Inika seemed like they would've been the perfect translations to Mirimax designs. The only thing they'd have to do is fill in the gaps with mucsle fibers and heartlights and they pretty much had the perfect base to use. Always pissed me off that we never got a movie for the 06 year because of this fact.

It's definitely got more to do with the Arthron than the Calix. I think at least a few some ideas they scrapped for the final Inika went into the Mahri.

LEGO fucked us knowingly and willingly. My very heavy fanwank is that the Makuta based their rahi off the ones that had got in from Spherus Magna, like the ancient sea creatures, and based their biological processes off of them. Presumably Mata Nui even wanting the Makuta to make animals to inhabit him showed he had some awareness of ecosystems being a thing.

Constraction is done for the foreseeable future, this most recent Star Wars wave seems like the last stuff we're getting this year. Might be something in 2019, but if you ask me buildable figures have been begging to be put on ice for a while. Lego should take a step back and reevaluate what made lines like Throwbots and Bionicle perform well before running the concept into the ground any more than they already have.

Honestly what they should do is make theme that takes the build philosophies of constraction, i.e. action figure line with some specialized parts, story-driven, imaginative designs, and then apply it to system. We already have Mixel joints, so the foundation is there. Just build up a theme that heavily uses them while providing budget-friendly sets and you have a winner. I could almost see a G3 Bionicle follow that path.
