I know people moan about the death of Lego's original IPs but both Legends of Chima and Nexo Knights seemed really bloated, if that makes sense? They tried to cram so much story and TV and app tie-ins and every minifig is a separate named character and even multiple instances of the same minifig have different faceprints etc. What happened to just painting some broad strokes and letting your imagination fill in the rest? Hell even my favourite theme that everyone hates (Galaxy Squad) just gave you the basics for a human v. alien conflict and left it at that.

Let Ninjago be the story-driven, multimedia tie-in IP, let the rest be simple, enjoyable potentials for adventures in a fantasy/space/both setting.

I agree. I feel like it's not to much licenced themes that are killing original IPs, as it is Legos need to have every theme outside of City or Creator have a story. I just want to go back to the days of the huge plethora of Space subthemes and Aquazone subthemes, where the sets weren't restricted to Earth based designs and also aren't riddled with the same five named characters in every box. You know what was also great about this? The fact that there didn't need to be a conflict in every box. Less sets with obligitory enemy figs with some extra vehicle that just bloats the set price. If they went back and did that, I'm sure they could keep a theme afloat for more than three years. Maybe rotate the years to have each have just one faction each and have year three be a range of sets with both factions fighting. Friends seems to be doing just fine as a girlified version of City, so why not do a boy theme in a similar fashion?

This has literally been happening since the second wave of Blacktron I sets in 1988 when the catalogs started pitching the story of the evil Blacktrons robbing the innocent Futurons. As soon as Lego began marketing sets as "good team vs. bad team", they saw marketable success.

If it was gender neutral then Friends wouldn't have been necessary. I think Ninjago is the only truly gender neutral theme (in the sense that it's popular among both boys and girls, which would explain its huge success).

I'm aware but they restricted themselves. Faction sets were primarily without enemies in the set and if they were it was minimal, with a single minifig or something. Nowadays the only sets without enemies are polybags or some shit. I'm not saying all sets should be without conflict, but just that the more balanced way they did it back then was more balanced than it is today.

Think something like Ninjago, you armybuild the green ninja guys because you like those and your friend armybuilds the red ninja guys since he likes those, and you play together either fighting each other or teaming up against a third party.

Conflict isn't always nessisary. I remember as a kid my brother and I would play our LEGO space thing and we played about exploring other planets and the like. I remember we use to have our space men walking upside down on the underside of the recliner because they were on another planet so of course gravity was different.

even though the theme itself had conflict, I used to enjoy doing something similar with Adventurers. City is intended as gender neutral, but in a much bigger scale, LEGO has been seen as mostly a toy for boys, which is why, in an attempt to lure girls, they made barbie-esque cutesie figs to appeal to them. The major fanbase is still composed of males, but all in all, almost every theme is intended to be gender neutral

Bro.
Why not have 3 of the two brick tall window pieces for the windshield?
You'd lose a bit of the curves, and it wouldn't cover the sides, but would take up way less space.
Might be worth trying at least. They have them in dark transparent too.

Gotta agree with this, I used to build whole worlds with multiple hidden temples and rivers marked by little blue plastic gemstones in my room for my adventurers team to explore. Evil guys sometimes appeared but it was mostly about finding hidden treasure and dodging traps

Tip: you will never have enough time on your hands.

...But really though, the only part of city-building you need to actually plan out is building sizes, so that they're consistent. Beyond that, just start with Whatever - cities are so modular that it's real easy to change something if you're unhappy about it.

you can't be this fucking retarded.
Im _that_ guy who likes chima and thinks that Mammoth Walker is one of the best designs.
And i pretty much did all kinds of research about Chima and why/how it ended and how well it sold.

Chima was a SUCESSFUL line.
1) it lived for fucking 2-3 years (dont remember exact time line but more than 2 years which is amazing for non-main Lego line. Other themes live either 2-3 years or die during 1.5 years)
2) It was completely established and finished TV-Show and toyline. No sudden cancellation. Nothing like that. The story of Chima ended. They sold everything they wanted to sell during this line and the whole line just came to an end like a good finished story.
3) TV-show got few awards.

I really don't understand how people can buy lazy crap like Marvel/Star Wars sets that look really bad design wise. But say something shitty about super creative line about Cool Animal Mechs.

And by the way i knew that Chima killed that stupid weeb-show about Thunder Cats back in 2010. That show was mediocre anime-ish thing.

Not to mention you shouldn't blame Chima for that. At least Thundercats toys sucked ass and Chima actually brought something badass and cool to Lego.

While we having fucking Brickheadz and StarWars killing actually good things and only 1-2 autists whining about that.

Whatever about Star Wars (which is a little odd to say it kills anything, considering it's been pretty constant the whole way), Brickheadz ain't killing anything. It appeals to an entirely different demographic than any other Lego sets.

So, I've been building a few mechs lately, and I'm starting to feel I'm getting better. However, I read somewhere that it's more ideal to start with the legs. I've always started with the torso/cockpit and built around that. Does starting with the legs actually help improve the build?

Starting an upgrade. Will continue after getting bricklink order with some neat parts like cowcatcher from classic trains.
Actually...to be honest...im a bit disappointed with this set. It's expensive heavy and just a white brick. I will upgrade it - yes, but im a little sad because once again i spent money on Lego instead of buying something useful.
It's not even a super great set

Dunno, I've always started with torso or head (or torso-head), but had one case where I rebuild torso completely, while leaving head, legs and one arm intact and it turned out good. Not without flaws, but still. But I feel like if it has a cockpit - always better to start from it, or you risk failing miserbly, trying to fit figure into your mech, unless it is a very big mech.

Classic spacemen are the not-to-far-into-the-future descendants of today's city Space Agency. Click off a few hundred years and you'll reach what I call "The Space Era", where Classic space really begins. Click off a few hundred more years, and suddenly there's problems! Now it seems the war is over, both need to lick the wounds and rebuild, but with hints of an advancing alien alliance, rumors of rogue unknowns mentioned only as Star Shits, and potentially a dictatorship calling itself The Futron Regime one can only wonder how long the calm can last.

My Unikitty MOC collection is progressing. I'm still not a fan of how the frog turned out, and the Surfer Kitty is annoyingly lacking in details (although the sunglasses face in the new set will help a lot). I've also exhausted the list of MOCs I could find on Google Images.

As with yesterday: any other requests/suggestions?

Memorial day is the day we observe our fallen troops here in the states. Wreathes are placed at Graves and there's parades and such. So it's a holiday and a 3 day weekend for some of us too.

They're more like Hotwheels cars that are Lego compatible with a crashing gimmick anyways. They're bright, they're quirky, and if you don't like the shitty body you can easily make a brick built one. I loved these as a kid because having a plethora of little alien dudes for my minifigures to race against for cheap wasn't exactly a bad thing. Kiss my grits, grandpa.

Nexo Knights never spoke to me, I guess I dunno, the mechs just looked like mechs you'd see in Tron. I would have liked it better if they were even more of a marriage of technology and classic suits of armor. At least Ninjago's mechs have that Japanese vibe going on (not the movie mechs, the show mechs. Although, several of the movie mechs accomplish this as well. )

The only Nexo Knights sets I've considered are the Black Knight mech and Jestro's Volcano Lair (it looks pretty awesome)

but I still haven't bit the bullet on either, and honestly, I probably won't.

Never cared about the Toy Story line aside from this one set, RC is legit and the figs are great.
Vampyre Castle though, that's the real prize. All minifigs there, parts are looking to be about 99% there, I'll just pick up replacements later and rebuild it with the other Monster Fighters sets I have.

This was probably the most effort I ever had building actual set. Long story short, one store had a bunch of these half off, and I bought one strictly for parts (delicious sand blue). When I was done parting it out to my part bins, I checked the instructions and few pics and was like "Damn, now I want to build that". Went back to store to pick another one next day, and they were all gone. So I had to physically dig every single part out of the bins.

Anyone else disappointed with the cast of the cmf 40th anniversary wave? I feel like half of the slots were total wastes. Why not make most of the minifigs callbacks to older themes? Keep Race Car Guy, Police, Brick duo, kids, Cake Guy, Clown, Horse Guy, and Dragon Guy, but all the others are just filler. Why not

It's a nice little set. Has same issue that most buildings have, in that it's only half a building. Was surprised by slight modularity, and if you need grey slopes look no further. Old man Luke is pretty good and porg exists if that's your thing. Nice set, but wouldn't pay full price.

If I had to guess, I'd say one reason for story-driven IPs is pure marketing. When you present the kids with a cartoon they can watch for free online that has five named characters, they associate those five as a group. Little boys love collecting groups of things, so instead of just wanting the one set that most appeals to you in the store when your mom takes you to the Lego aisle, you want to get one set that has each main character in it. Most other toy lines of the past decades have done this (He-Man, TMNT, etc. etc.); they're ostensibly "based on the cartoon" but the cartoon is obviously planned from the start as a marketing tool for the toys because the company makes its money on toy sales, not revenue from the show. The idea is that you see the cartoon first and then see the toys for it in the store.

It's important to remember that after the debacle at the turn of the century that nearly killed them, Lego became EXTREMELY conservative in its business practices. They got their toes wet with named characters in the 90s but the internet has allowed them to reach a much wider audience for minimal expense. They've been slowly testing the waters for years as they've slowly ramped up the number of story-driven IPs to where it is now. If they're using lots of story-driven IPs, it's because those have been proven to earn more than comparable free-play lines.

Yes, I've done it and soaking pieces in a hydrogen peroxide and water mix in the sun works very well Didn't watch the whole video, but the main thing to be concerned about is stirring it to keep the bubbles that will form from resting on the pieces for too long. If you don't stir it up and knock the bubbles around, the pieces won't be a uniform white. You definitely want to wear rubber gloves. It won't seem like it right away, but if you get too much hydrogen peroxide on your palms the skin will start to slough off. Also make sure you stir it around to turn the pieces over, since the sunlight+hydrogen peroxide is what's reactivating the bromine in the plastic.

I've heard you can also do it with Oxy-Clean and no sunlight, but I've never looked into that method.

So, I haven't MOCced anything besides small random Star Wars sets for a couple of years now, but there's a sudden urge in me to build a Paradisa-themed airport and, after messing around in LDD for a first time in years, this was the result of a vehicle that could go in it. The wing kind of bugs me though, too flat and thin. If you add another layer of plates then use curved slopes for the leading edge it'd be perfect, see pic related

So while doing a quick bit of grocery shopping, I decided to grab a couple of the series 18 minifigs. I didn't bother to feel them, just grabbed the first five I could. I got back home and while eating lunch, decided to have a little fondle to get an idea of what I had. In the very first bag I grabbed I felt a little cap, followed by a 1x2 plate and a 1x2 tile.
Yeah, I accidentally grabbed a Classic Policemen Minifig.
Problem kinda like the idea that I might be able to sell it for four times the price I payed for it in a few years. is, I already have two and don't really have a need, or want, for a third.

I'm thinking about just holding onto it and to see what it will be worth in a few years. Currently it ranges from AU$22 to AU$77 on BL and there are no sellers in Australia.
I did have the thought that I could run some sort of contest here and then give it away to one of you fuckers. But that seems like it would require more effort then I'm currently able to put in. Plus, I kinda like the idea that at some point I might be able to sell it for four time what I payed for it, or more.

Does that make me scummy?

Thanks, everyone! I did try out the curved slopes and it does add some pleasant shaping to the wings, pic very much related, but I can't help but feel like the final result with the floats just looks way too beefy and heavy in comparison to the lighter and retro-ish Cessna look I was going for. Still, I really like how it turned out, and as such, rather than having to choose strictly between one of these, I might as well have the two in the airport and assume they're just variants of the same airplane being used by the same airliner.

My next idea is for a jet that's slightly larger than these two turboprops (not by much, just enough to stand out when stationary next to them) and has a sand green livery, but I'm honestly not entirely sure of how to avoid the bland modern City-esque design with way too many pre-molded pieces that most Lego airliners seem to have and neither do I want to go full retro and square-ish like the older airliners. Any suggestions? Maybe using the same cockpit window piece I used for the turboprops could be a good start for an intermediate design between those two eras?

From left: Payseez, Fanzeez, and Chexeez

They all share the same color palette - the only reason I picked these colors is because I only had the dome piece used as Payseez's helmet in yellow and dark green, but I had a 2x3 slope with the racing number in yellow, so that's their scheme. Yellow, green, red, black, white, light bley, dark bley, silver.

I even made bio blurbs for them

For reals though. I've been working on some small buildings for my town. Most of them are retired from war and adventures, but I think they are charming. Here are the people I'm trying to make room for. The farthest right is going to be a blacksmith's house/shoppe. The crown guard in front of it is the most likely proprietor. We have some local constables. Then the main party in front of the potion shoppe they run. The last building is the carpenter's residence and such. I only forgot to to include a couple of the town's figures.

I like Ninjago,is very diverse. Bionicle was too male and bad but Ninjago has more strong female characters which I can relate to. Happy that Bionicle trash theme got cancelled again. Any news on the new Ninjago sets? I hope they get more female characters.

I really don't give that much of a fuck if people comment when I post MOCs. I mean yeah, it's nice and I feel totally awesome when people do comment, but I don't feel bad if they don't.
The only reason I haven't posted any MOCs in the last month or so is because of living arrangements.

I kinda split my time between my place in town, where I spend most of my week, and my family's farm, where I try and get out to on weekends/every second weekend (depending on how busy I am/how lazy I am).
About a month and half ago my mother went away for a 3 week holiday with her partner, so instead of coming out everyday/every-second-day, I just "moved" back out here (which is something I've been kinda wanting to do for the last 6 months anyway). This however has meant that I've been away from my most of Lego collection and MOCs

However, I'm going to be "moving" back into my place in town next week, for at least the next 3 weeks, so I'll return to posting MOCs, as there were a few that I was working on before mum left (and some that I've worked on since) that I've been meaning to share.
