The only people who will be buying into it are those who are already into the line. Most people like to tip their toe and try one thing out, then go out and buy more.
The fact that you need to wait another two years before you can buy more stuff is another downside, effectively blocking off newcomers.

No other toy company who has used Kickstarter has this problem, who is able to sell their stuff year round and sometimes even introduces new waves (because they got a line of credit from a bank) without rattling their tin cup at their fanbase.
Not surprisingly, this type of buy in process has created some of the most elitist fanboys on this board. See also people who boast about how many preorders they have from X, Y, and Z Companies.
