I didn't play this specific soccer set, but I did own pic related until my fucking piece of shit little brother broke it and scattered the pieces in shame (he didn't realize you could just...rebuild lego sets). I had a lot of fun with it, there's even a video on an old camcorder somewhere of a friend and I recording a match while another announces, it was a cool thing to own as a kid. I'd be pretty happy to see them bring the playable sports themes back, even though I'm not a huge soccer fan. A bubble boy hockey set would be dope.

Definitely strange in context, but their addition always made me wonder why they never introduced black skin tones to classic Lego. I know it's because they didn't want to make "yellow = white", but that's already the case anyway, and plus Simpsons did it. I personally wouldn't mix yellows and tan fleshies but yellows and reddish browns seem to fit better for me.

What are your guys' true and honest opinions on in-house original story-based themes? Nexo-Knights, Elves, Ninjago are the current ones, but I think Ultra Agents, Chima, and Monster Fighters are recent enough to include them as well.

I guess my personal feelings are mixed on these specific themes (of them, I think Monster Fighters is the only one that interests me whatsoever). I really enjoy the fact that Lego can make original themes work, but I'm not a fan of Ninjago. Its evergreen 7-year-reign has boxed out any growth, introduction, or expansion of other ninja/samurai/mech/hell, pirate-based themes and that bothers me. Same with Nexo-Knights. I don't profess to know how sales are doing but I hope Nexo-Knights didn't do too well because they don't personally appeal to me, and it would fucking suck if we got another 5-6 years of them without ever getting a Mill Village or classic Castle again.

I guess this might just be nostalgia talking but I wouldn't mind Lego reviving some older themes and recycling them--Rock Raiders and Alpha Team especially got my nuts roasted as a kid, and I would love to see them do a reimagining of Monster Fighters, too.

Chima had some potential,to many tribes killed it and an cartoon with a good premise but horrible writing and execution.
Nexo had a better cartoon that fell apart quickly and the sets did good in it's first year. Using the same villain for the whole year didn't work wwll for Nexo and the lack of buildings. Check out some Nexo books for all the scrapped villains.

Will the post-apoc Ninjago sets be the final wave? I am hoping so, given the failure of the movies, but the City sold shockingly well according to my friends at my local store, so I dunno.

I imagine they are just testing parts/designs for The Second Part.

I want to see a castle theme again.

Or just make your own. Legos are meant to be crazy designs, not realistic models. The LEgos movie showed us how bad AFOLs are.

Ninjago isn't really to blame for Castle not having a theme. The great thing about Ninjago is that it covers a lot. You can take the minifigs and just have a purely ninja theme at home while taking the high tech parts and making general mechs, and the themed villains are pretty colorful and can be used for other things. I added the sky pirates to my regular pirate crew, the cyborg ninjas are good space goons, and skeletons can fit in any Castle theme easily. The biker gang from this year can fit into City. The Shark Army are the Aquasharks after a management change in my personal canon. Even if you don't like minidolls, Elves is the best Castle theme we've gotten since the trolls. The cmfs offer new Castle figs also.

Maybe then they could sell on the pretext of just being very small sets, perhaps even bump up the price 1 dollar more than other minifig series to account for the micro builds while also further using that as an argument?

They did something similar with the Planet series, but focused too much on the build/display, and didn't really include any cool figs. If they did put in the mini-build like in your pic with actual desirable figures, then I think they could get away with it.

That series were fully fledged sets with large minibuilds and planets though, I was thinking about just a normal 16 figure blind bag series with much tinier builds as small bonuses (say, maybe none surpassing 10 pieces) so Hasbro can't blame them for selling individual figs.

We are no longer the main target audience for Lego, we might have been 10-20 years ago, but we no longer are, and what kids these days want is what Lego is giving them, at least according to their demographic studies. Nostalgia is a very powerful thing, it may even blind us, and while those themes like Classic castle or Classic space were fun, they no longer seem so to the target audience, they want cool suits and cool weapons and lots of colors and conflict, they want to be told the story, not imagine it, so we are not getting classic themes back, we must face that. There may be a commemorative set of sorts once in a while, but there won't be a whole line. We need to learn that Lego is a toy and the toy company will make those toys for the kids, not the adults, so we have to take what we can get and be happy with it. There's lots of incredible builds and new techniques today, it's just a matter of perspective. Sadly, some people are too blinded by nostalgia and screech over how lego isn't blocky anymore, and how surfaces are studless, and how today's Lego is terrible. Those people can either stop buying lego and just play with their old sets, or suck it up and stop complaining, because Lego isn't gonna go back just appeal to them.

Friends and city still sell like a motherfucker yet they have pretty much no conflict outside of cops (admittedly there are lots of cops, but so were back in the golden age of town), neither do creator, speedchamps and technic.
This shit is still around, you just have to look.
The more fantasy sci-fi 'cool' themes tend to be more conflict driven, the OG space and mars mission were kind of exceptional for not having it. Licenseshit being conflict-driven comes with the territory really, the part that is sad for fans of more calm stuff is that starWARS is rather war-heavy and its omnipresence kind of leaves little room for fullblown high sci-fi lego fare.
The new harry pooter sets seem kinda chill if you're into that. Mostly classrooms and mysterious buildings with wacky artefacts and magicks.

Nope, it uses a new 1x3 inverted tile with bar extension underneath of the 1x3 head brick. That stud has a hole in the middle. Much more sturdy connection than the original build.

Fiddling around with that thing I noticed how it has a bunch of undocumented features that aren't on the box, the website or in the instructions like how the Monstrox stand can be attached to the back of the mechs or how there's a peculiar round 2x2 plate with one stud inside the big mech which serves no function but the Merlok and Monstrox "minifigs" fit perfectly onto it, even with the mech's helmet down, making it look like they're piloting it when the small clay suit isn't inside of it.
Can't help but feel as if that's something that was planned for the series but dropped when it was cancelled.

also the "mini fig" depicted as the baby in this set is not the mini fig developed 40 some years ago but one of its predecessors
note it is a molded one piece torso, no legs, faceless "head" with a hair piece

The way they pose sets in photos can make or break interest in a set. I turned down the Deep Freeze Defender and the M-Tron Particle Ionizer because they would always show the satellite straight up in pictures like the most anti-aerodynamic boner in existence, and a random pair of antennae jutting out in opposite directions like a tv receiver without a clue that they spun like lazer helicopter blades on the box. I really like these minifigs, are they custom? I wonder if that joint is secure enough, even technic joints tend to give in when holding such big blocks. Still a quite nice design, even if its not my taste.
