>>7114668Theres a few things, at least in the USA, causing it.
A.) obviously video games, why buy four action figures when you can buy Battlefront 2? yes I know the game is in limbo and I personally didn't like it, kids who like star wars will play it regardless.
B.) Shrinking middle class, and also, Star wars(and really pretty much all Sci-fi) really is a white person thing in the US, there are fans of all races, but the biggest most knowledgable star wars fans are white, mid teen to early 30's men, who the new movies do not pander to at all, and the only person they may identify with, Po, is smacked down like a dog for doing what he thought was right by a 70 year old woman. Not good marketing. Black guys aren't going to drop a couple hundred dollars on action figures, neither are most women regardless of race. That totally ignores that hispanic guys also really love star wars, not at the same rate, but they are easily the second largest market, and zero pandering is done for them either.
C.) Similar to B, but the people in charge ignore that people with money in their largest market (america) are generally, white, conservative, and christian. Even if the star wars cast was snow white blonde haired beautiful aryans, The people who have the money to buy a ton into the toys, games, novels, etc. don't want to hear psuedo-marxist garbage in a series that used to be an allegory about the perpetual battle between good and evil, with some significant relatable undertones to their own country's fight for independence.
D.) beyond star wars, most great late 70's era to mid 90's IP's have been rebooted so many darn times that the original glamour was lost, the vision that made the first one great was lost to new directors and bad writers, to a point where even nostalgia only helps to barely turn a profit on some of these franchises. if the movies have been bad, continually, ever since the second or third iteration, Nobody cares anymore.
