Look I'm all for paying a bit more for new in box stuff but this is klocki we're talking about. Unless you know you're gonna sell it down the track there's no point to keeping it in the box and it really holds no value to you personally.

I have over 75 sealed sets that I've collected over the years. I've also documented what I paid for each set, the current market value for each one, my projected market value based on trends, desirability, and so on. Basically a bunch of stuff that your puny brain couldn't comprehend because

If I were to start selling my entire sealed collection right now, I would be PROFITING over $6000 before the end of the year and that's being conservative. That is MANY times over than what I originally had invested.

You shit is only worth money if you find buyers at that price. The money you "make" actually costs you the time and effort (work) to buy and sell it, the risk of storing it (could be lost in fire/flood), and the opportunity cost of not having that money invested in actual investments.

There is also a risk that, while the number of boxed sets only goes down, the demand prevents any real price surge. There are only a few NIB on bricklink and they're going for $100+ in North America. The nostalgia for that particular set might not be very high and there is a possibility everyone willing to pay $100+ already has it. Just because it is listed at a price doesn't mean it sells.

That being said, this is a lego thread on a toys board, not an investment discussion. The correct answer is always that lego is a sub-optimal investment, and we want to play with our toys.

To the anon that suggested Bricks n minifigs in Wheaton you are based. I went after work on Friday and all the sets especially discontinued ones were sold almost as if they were retail. I bought pic related for only $23 open box and the gungan Sheids were missing. A lot of late 90s sets are sold just an extra $10-$30 from original price. HIGHLY recommend you check it out too, I’m planning on being a regular and might go in this week to get the LEGO 3 in 1 beach house for only $23, original price was $25.

But my point still stands, unless you've bought it with the explicit reason to sell it later keeping klocki sealed in its box goes against the entire point of klocki. You can't build shit with it, you can't add the parts to your part collection, all you really gain is a bigger epeen.

It didn't help that the whole concept of wave 2 was basically a color/element swap of wave 1, only with rock/lightning instead of rock/lava this time.
What made it even worse was the fact that they depicted plant and water tribes in the Book of Monsters from the first wave and even made merch like sticker sheets but then completely dropped both concepts.

The same I ask about Bionicle G2. The concept art shows a deeper and darker story with the Mask of Time and look what we got. Lego wants things cheaper and more expensive. I blame The Lego Movie for all of this.

can the docks be attached to the city in any other configuration and still look decent?

I have a Ninjago display but my city is angled so that I can't attach the docks to the comic-store side. I can't rotate it either because it'd spoil the layout of everything I've got around it

The legs-only one is also movie accurate. For about five seconds of the movie in which the ball looking robot pilots that big one and tears the top half away accidentaly, as to reveal that it is piloting it. Sold separately it'd THE perfect 5-10$ Garmadon army builder set that no doubt people would buy multiple copies of but instead it's randomly thrown into a 60$ set for no reason at all which is especially odd since none of the other good guy vehicles feature something similar.

I thought there was a good movie buried somewhere in there but overall yeah, it was pretty weak. Most of the characters are just there to be there. This is probably also more of a personal autistic thing, but I feel like it doesn't do a good job explaining/justifying weird lore shit like Garmadon and Wu being brothers, Zane being a robot, elemental powers, Garmadon being all Garmadon, etc. It's all references to the original story, but it just doesn't have enough room to actually address any of it in a new setting. Shit like the throwaway line about being bitten by a spider snake is kinda funny, but from a general audience standpoint a lot of it just has to, and does come across as random bullshit. Something like Batman has enough cultural presence where if you mix stuff up for a movie people are still going to "get it," but Ninjago is too obscure to really work if you make a new version but still pack it up with shit from the original story without proper context.

The framing story is also pretty shit.

Principles like master building are still present there, but only as a passing mention and not as plot points, just like in the Batman movie.

To be fair, Ninjago is very much a niche thing, I get that a lot of the references are still going to feel weird since it's supposed to be a franchise reboot of sorts.You have to either be a ninjagofag or a klocki autist like the anons ITT, and even then, the latter are going to miss a couple things here and there if they are not familiar with ninjago lore.
It's like those direct-to-video releases, but with a way better budget, Honestly I'm glad they didn't go that route.

True Story Time!

I had a friend owned a business selling GW merch. He was selling under MSRP, but selling enough of it to make a huge profit in a relatively short time. GW threatened to sued him multiple times over some of the pettiest things, like word usage when selling online, or how he was selling bits, or where what country his customers were purchasing from, or because his online sales were "competing too much" with their online sales. It was fat and fast cash, but they were threatening him all the time for selling their product, and he eventually stopped dealing with GW because of their dumb shit.

I mean... he did over $1m in business with GW under a year at his cost and before profit. If someone was pushing that much of my plastic I'd find a way to hire them on my team instead of browbeating them into closing shop.

Yeah, Lego really really avoids putting out small sets these days. I don't know why.

I remember back in the day each theme having two or three 10 dollar sets with a little build, but most themes avoid this for some reason and instead put a small set as a bonus build in a big set.

I don't have this set but I've watched the Jang review and it looks fairly okay? Everything in there seems to be cohesively close to how it was portrayed in TFA, the only reason for someone not to like it is if they don't either like the film or the particular scenes involving those characters or something. Honestly, yes.

It has some good moments, but it's a bit rushed and all over the place compared to Lego Movie and Lego Batman. It wants to be a Power Rangers ensemble cast / classic kung fu movie, but spends too much time trying to be a single hero's journey reconciling with his dad in the non-lego-built forest of randumb to do either effectively.

1 dobby
3 cedric diggory (I felt awkward trying to feel what the figs were and thought I had 2 owls but instead they were tri-wizard cups)
2 weasley mother (the teacup and saucer are pretty neat)
2 of the characters that come with the "niffler" babby, it looks like a kind of mole, pretty neato
1 random character with a hot dog????? kinda sad about that. I like the unique accessories and hotdogs are not very unique

I like the throne a lot. and the headwear of that one fig.
I also really like the central female fig, idk why - that hair seems really rare and just goes so well with that particular face with the facepaint/makeup.

Seasons 1-4 are entirely episodic so you can pick any at random and get something good, but if you want actual recommendations

>S4E11 L: Tale of X9

The first few episodes of season 5 are fantastic, especially the 2nd. It just suffers from pacing issues because of episode constraints. The other seasons are all good but what I posted above should be a definitive introduction to the show.

Modern CMFs are never going to be worth more than $5 each with the exceptions of the shortpacked ones. If you're buying multiples, the only point is to give them away in the /lg/.

Which doesn't make sense in multiple ways.
TLM and TLBM are based on Finn's imagination while TLNM is the story that Jackie Chan tells the kid, hence why there are so many references to what happens in the shop like Chan being Wu, Meowthra being his cat, Lloyd losing the arm that the minifig didn't have, etc.
And then there are also the Making Of book where Ninjago City is described as follows:
>"Ninjago City exists on the edge of an island but it is truly in its own world. As far as anyone knows, there are no other cities, countries or communities beyond it."
It's debatable, though, whether that means that Ninjago City is the ONLY piece of civilisation in the world or just of the island.

That light brick piece in the Robot in neat. I have some spacemen from the starter pack who do need a shuttle/base. But I've never tried my hand at a modular building, however small, and I have the pieces to make it more legit.

I eventually want to get into making modules, but of a smaller scale, and I'm not too into the Expert series. Ninjago City is excellent, though expensive. I figured with the parts I have I could maybe get a couple of the small modulars as a starting point to then spruce up with my garish 90s pieces and greebles. I've been watching De Marco's AirCity videos and taking inspo from that (picrel).

Part of me wants to try incorporating random Bionicle parts (if I can make it work) with some of my Technic compatible bricks.

I haven't actually purchased any modular sets, so I lack the parts too. I could make whacky ass multi-coloured builds, but that's just because I own too many classic sets and random polybags. If I had been smart I would have bought a couple of big sets for parts instead of fucking around buying things here and there. But part of that comes from only having grocery store boxes available to me as a kid. I'd be able to get things like picrel, and then I'd have to make do with my basic brick box. The only "real" sets I had were Maul's infiltrator, a UFO, Luke's landspeeder, and the Endor speeder bikes. Aside from that I got into Bionicle until the Bohrok/Bohrok Va.

Now that so many sets have the instructions online I just steal ideas for little details. Once I get the sets for my birthday I might place a parts order and then start trying to actually realize a project, considering things like a consistent colour scheme, theme, etc.

I long to build a highly greebled somewhat dank city apartment/condo that has a kind of murky cybernetic vibe to it, I want to fill it with incorporate an organic chaos kind of aesthetic too (e.g. plants growing in cracks of concrete, moss growing from the dripping water of an airconditioner system)
I love the greebling on the outside of buildings with all the pipes and stuff. I want to find out a way to do that and how much it will cost. Gonna take a while.

You're speaking to me on so many levels. I've considered trying to do something that I'd call more "techno-organic," where the city feels like it's coming alive, or already a living organism. I saw the older Sanctum Sanctorum set with the creature coming out of the wall (portal?), and thought that was cool. Imagine a building with tentacles crawling down the side. And yeah I have some bamboo leaves, see grass, finger leaves, tails (55236), horns (88513), teeth (87747), and eye tiles. Imagine something like a jungle at the heart of clustered modules. Plus lots of translucent pieces and printed pieces that could be computers, etc.. But I'm still a ways away from being able to do that.

I've thought about adding some "edgier" stores, like a queer bar or head shop alongside the typical fish stall and what have you. It would be small, cramped altogether. I'd try to keep everything on the space of a grey baseplate (10701). Build upwards. Dark red, earth blue, that sand colour, azures, greys, black, translucent purple, orange are all colours that appeal to me. I'd need to focus it. I have the Yellow Submarine set still unopened that I'd like to incorporate somehow.

There's a lot happening in my mind, and it seems to lack focus. I've got cyberpunk on the one hand, psychedelic on the other, and hints of spookiness...

I've always been fascinated about microcosms and microecosystems. Aquariums, bonsai, terrariums. I've also been fascinated by elements of steampunk/olde worlde aristocratic aesthetic.

When I was 15 I was lucky to travel to Hong Kong with my parents for two weeks - it wasn't my first time in Asia (first time was when I was 8 and went to Singapore and then Malaysia) - on that trip to Singapore and Malaysia I did see for the first time the stuff we're talking about - or at least elements of it - but it was when I visited Hong Kong that I really saw some intense, visceral stimuli. The memory that I will never forget, the one that stands out the most is of an alleyway, dark & dank.
I'm the anon you replied to and everything you've said speaks to me as well. I also eyed that set so many times but I haven't picked it up due to the price.

I think I need to get the yellow submarine set, I'm not a die-hard beatles fan, but it's such a unique set and I do love a few of the songs by the beatles (Helter Skelter being my favourite).

Techno-organic, cyborganic, not necessarily set in a post-apocalyptic world (that's quite cliche or at least heavily over-done in the last few years) but definitely set in a world or setting where there is a mix of intense, futuristic technology within a basic human setting (e.g. run down city) where elements of it are not as covered or ikea-like (e.g. parts of a cyborganic computer system incorporated into the apartment/building complex are completely dishevelled, bare, raw). I love the idea of having a specific baseplate to work from - definitely helps with focusing and providing that starting framework to conceptualize from, I also like it from an aesthetic point as my ideas also involve clustered areas, cramped, packed with as much stuff as possible, intense density.

Lots of translucent elements too for that classic cyber glow. Not just from electricity either. I'd love to incorporate some elements that show cherenkov radiation

The alleyway was chock full of a vast array of city-life ephemera. It was dark as fuck, the space was so so small yet it was still there, it was a space between two large city apartment blocks, and the ground was full of cracked concrete with small plants, moss, and weird black slime in the cracks - it was wet in a lot of places, from the airconditioners and taps and other dank, spooky, potentially even gross stuff.

It was grimy. Small doors seemed to appear out of nowhere, what I thought was a tiny bit of space on a wall actually was a door, just covered in graffiti, tendrils of plants, dirty and grime, camouflaged naturally by the 24/7 city-life. This intense dense dance between the inorganic and the organic.

These spaces, or this aesthetic, is in my mind a kind of technorganic grotto.

I'm really into it and the more I think/write about it the more I want to build it. Something else that I'll never forget from Hong Kong is finding an underground english pub, the entrance/doorway was tiny, complex and covered like a lot there, descended down into this semi-lit thing and then woosh, it opened up into an old english pub setting - all the wood, comfy old leather couches/seats, the olde worlde aesthetic. It was still cramped, still tiny, but it was rich in the experience and felt like this hidden magical nook - a comfy shelter from the non-stop maximum city outside. It's still something I think of to this day and definitely an aspect I would want to incorporate in a build.

In the next thread I'll post some pictures that I think you'll find interesting/inspiring.

I never got to travel as a kid and my formative years were spent around the GTA, which is very much about urban sprawl. So I missed out on seeing the world outside of National Geographic. My desire to build vertically is a reaction against sprawl. When I got older, part of me conceptualized a city of buildings that were mixed used, maximized what space was used, and relied upon small living pods and shared communal spaces. But that idea can easily be turned dystopia, and seeing that reality abroad (through pictures) hammers that home. Is it kind of perverse to draw inspiration from them? lol. Walking around a NA city I did see a lot of slumminess and poverty. That's not reflected in these clean modular cities everyone makes. I have to go to work now, so I cannot provide a more in depth response, but hopefully I see your posts in the next thread. I'll save that article.

Also as a kid my parents didn't always buy me a lot of LEGO, so I largely ended up with grocery store sets, like the Aquanaut mini subs:

It's not perverse no. You've stated exactly why you're inspired by them, it's like an equation, we seek and search for the possibilities - I do feel or think similar thoughts from time to time when meditating on this topic/aesthetic, a thought goes like "taking pleasure from their loss/pain is wrong" but that's an oversimplification and ignorant to what I am actually doing and how I am doing it.

These City subthemes don't really do much for me. The same can be said for the mining, jungle and underwater subthemes. It's better than nothing but I wish Lego would actually commit fully fledged adventure lines and not this lukewarm City crap.
