I wish I had known more about Lego care when I was younger. The stickers are beyond fixing but is there a way to remove yellowing from bricks made around 2008? I want to clean them up as best I can before selling to get a little more out of them.

Buy some bottles of hydrogen peroxide from a drugstore and soak the pieces in it in bright sunlight for a few hours. You'll need to stir it every few minutes because bubbles will form that will affect how white it gets. You'll also want to wear disposable gloves and/or have something to stir it with or the hydrogen peroxide will make the top layer of your skin start to fall off.

It doesn't hurt the plastic, though.

The stuff you can buy in a store is only going to be between 3-5%, so there's no need to dilute it further.

No such thing. The reason old plastic starts to yellow is because of the bromine that's mixed into the plastic to act as a flame retardant. As the bromine breaks down, it turns from transparent to brown, which causes the pieces to look yellowed. Sunlight + hydrogen peroxide gets the bromine on the surface woken back up again so it changes back from brown to clear. However, this isn't a permanent fix, as it will start to turn yellow again in the future, just like if you had bought your restored pieces new. Basically, you're not going to overdo it and all you need to be concerned about is UV damage from being in the sunlight too long. That's why you should only do it for about four hours. Long enough to see good results, but not so long that the UV rays weaken the plastic.

Oh boy. Yeah I know The Shining. But I had forgotten that his name was Jack. It's almost 8 years since I last watched The Shining - my one and only viewing of it - I was in college, two of my mates and I had been drinking heavily for a few days, not much sleep either, around 1pm Sunday we decide to crawl into a room, pull the curtains closed, and sit there in our semi-drunken haze. Then out came the boxed wine, and we decided to put on The Shining. Sipping on cheap but richly tasting red wine out of crappy plastic mugs watching the Shining on a shitty old small laptop whilst semi-drunk and getting drunker... Reality started to distend just a tad... Which matched the kinda film in and of itself - it's a 2hour and 40 minutes long film, but to myself, in that experience, it felt like it went on for 10+ hours. It was a real intense journey.

Years before that experience I owned a book called The Haunted Castle by Leo Hartas. It was an incredible book and I poured over it countless hours throughout my young life.
In a section of the book there is a maze which moves on it's own, and there's a gnarled old gardener/hedgetrimmer/groundskeeper. I was fascinated by this and since then I have always wanted to do try and create something like that. There's something about the book, about the illustrations and the nitty-gritty, gnarled, twisted, decaying yet organically life-rich complex grotto-dimpled aesthetic and environment which I have been slightly obsessed with - Pirates of the Caribbean, with the somewhat mutated crewmembers of the Flying Dutchman, especially the one who is embedded in the wall, also elicited the same feelings of fascination within me.

There's also the part of me that loves intricate, minute, moving things - things that have a function and are dynamic yet their form does not allude to it, I like that kind of stuff.

Oh man I know this feeling too anon.
I was in my dark ages and missed a lot of great stuff. Including the emerald night, which is gorgeous, and hogwarts expresses. And also the winter train, if I remember correctly.
I want to get all three eventually. That's a dream.

Apparently the hogwarts express is selling here at Dreamworld's Lego Store, but I'm not sure for how much - apparently it's far less than $180 AUD which is the price on ebay right now.

Luckily the holiday train is still in production. I don't know how much longer though since it came out around this time in 2016.
But now that I remember I wish I had the toy story train too, maybe even the lone ranger one.

Thanks, It would have been more difficult lf it was a more faithful copy. The doorway is much the same, just 4 studs wider but for the rest I just tried to preserve bits I liked and remove what I didn't so that was easy make as big as I liked. Here's an old/new wall section pic, you can kinda see I tried to keep those buttresses without worrying about reproducing them 100%.

I used my $10 off card to snag Ocean's Bottom, two Creative Suitcases (pleasantly surprised), the Green Creativity Box, the Bricktober Ninjago figures, and another $10 promotional gift card. My friend also ordered me the 2017 seasonal, Halloween Haunt, which should be here by the 14th. I won't be purchasing any new LEGO until the 26th, when I'll get the Modular Modern Home, Creative Supplement Bright, and maybe another Battle of Atlantis for the parts, because all three are permanently at a reduced price at this bookstore. With my second TRU gift card I'm either getting another creative suitcase or Mr. Freeze Ice Attack, plus a grey baseplate. That only leaves Mission to Mars (10405) and the Creative Builder Box (10703) on my wishlist -- Christmas purchases. I'll probably chill out after that, and see what all releases with the second LEGO Movie. Over the next week I'll be disassembling and sorting most of my sets and elements.

You'll want to look into Technic compatible elements, like some of the following:

Some of those numbers might be for older elements, but try looking at sets like the Lex Luthor Mech Takedown or the Creator 3-in-1 Mythical Creatures on Brickset to see parts used and gather ideas. 64276 is another good element -- don't know how to describe it, lol.

This was cute, and I liked how the the walk rotates out to allow for internal play. But it's still a cramped build, and the bed is too small for a minifig. Also, his arm gets in the way of closing the wall on him in bed.

You could also try searching for anything tagged "mech", because they'll generally incorporate a lot of Technic elements, and the key thing is ball joints. I'm not entirely sure how compatible a lot of the new ball joint bricks are that come in current System sets. My Bionicle figures are at my mom's place, so I can't test a lot. Still, other elements like the brick with holes or brick with axle hole can connect with a lot of Bionicle parts -- basically look for anything Technic compatible. After all, a lot of System sets will incorporate gear systems Try looking at older themes, too, like Exo Force to get ideas. I'm still planning out what I am going to build with all of the new klocki from my birthday through to now, and I'm inspired by things like Ninjago City, the City Docks, and the collaborative effort on Brothers Brick to make a large scale city. But I also liked seeing Demarco's AirCity project, and having assembled a couple of Creator sets I have more of an idea of scale. Ideally I'd keep everything confined to a grey baseplate, building a multi-level structure and I have some ideas for buildings: head shoppe, love hotel, sushi bar (because I pulled the chef from the Ninjago Movie minifigs). For colours I have a lot of elements for medium blue thanks to Lighthouse Point and Classic sets (plus the Modern Home will add to this), new dark red thanks to Rey's Speeder and the Skate House, brick yellow thanks to Master Falls and Yoda's Hut, and Sand Green thanks to Battle of Atlantis and the Creative Suitcases. Other colours I have plenty of and would like to use are: cool yellow, light purple (pink), earth blue, bright red (way too much of this), medium azure, bright purple (more like hot pink), bright yellowish (lime) green, and orange. My stock of dark azure and spring yellowish green is also growing. For slopes I have plenty of bright reddish violent, bright yellow, bright blue, and black. Whatever I tinker with I'll be sure to keep /lg/ posted.

However I looked up prices on walmart - for 299 you can get Ninjago City. Which is essentially an incredible thing. Four thousand, eight hundred, and sixty-seven pieces for 299 dollars. 4867 pieces. Furthermore, by purchasing this set you are able to experience building the entire Ninjago City - which I have heard is quite a fun, comfy, challenging, and overall pretty amazing experience. Thirdly, you have a sound investment in this set - it can only go up in price over time, as long as you keep the box, instructions, and the bricks safe and tidy, the usual stuff you know. Finally, with such a vast amount of bricks at your disposal, and the general concept of the build, you have great opportunity to tinker with things and build your own mocs. I can't think of a more comfy set at all with such opportunity and abundance.
So definitely pick that up anon.

My suggestion for a second set would be han solo's speeder. Simply because it's a build I really enjoyed. And the minifigs sell for a bit if you're into that sort of thing too, making a bit of money back.

Brainy bones, a skilled alchemist, but uses his skills to make candy and soda. Wears goggles without lenses because he's a hipster.

Magic Miguel, a necromancer with a desire for power, a graverobber who is responsible for himself and the others. In an attempt to perform a ritual to raise the dead with the bodies of the others, but the spell caused an explosion, killing him. However, due to the nature of the spell, he managed to resurrect both himself and the other 8. His bones were burned as another result of the explosion, giving him his dark appearance. Requires prosthetic arms as he blew them off in the incident

Skrap, loves bombs and his crossbow, but mostly bombs. Missing arms, bottom jaw and legs from several premature detonations. Pretty sure he killed himself at one point.

Sir Roland Von Rattle, a valiant knight, favored by the king of his homeland. An optimist who can't wait to go adventuring in his new boney body.

This or the Hydronauts base were what I wanted as a kid, but only ever got the little grocery store sets, like the Solo Sub and Sea Sprint 9. Fort Legorado, the Fright Knights castle (6097), and the different Ninja buildings (3053, 6093, etc.) were all wants of mine. My parents did fuck up and got me the Mega Blocks Planetoids LX-009 City one year for Christmas, but when I moved and had to give toys away, that was one to go.

Objectively the best building sets right now might be Ninjago City and Ninjago City Docks, plus The Old Fishing Store. But they're not "bases" or "HQs." Subjectively I'd like Garmadon's Volcano Lair or the Sanctum Sanctorum Showdown.

Some of the individual themed books like the Star Wars ideas book are just okay, but from flipping through there were a lot of alternate builds or recolours of sets. Note: I have yet to borrow The LEGO Play Book and 365 Things To Do With LEGO Bricks.

Same anon here: you might also want to see if any of Megan Rothrock's books are of interest, because she was a former set designer. She has a series called The LEGO Adventure Book, with volumes like "Cars, Castles, Dinosaurs, and More", and "Robots, Planes, Cities, and More." I haven't actually flipped through these books, but my library has some and I plan to get around to them. The books feature a lot of example models (picrel) for different ideas and somewhere between 20-40 step-by-step breakdowns. But I've never cracked their spines and can't comment further, but figured I'd bring it to your attention.

I haven't read that one, but Awesome Ideas was great in how it took a theme, started with something simple, and then elaborated upon it. For example, in the City section they have you build a simple building with three flat walls all six bricks high. But by the end of it you're building detailed farmhouses, having more ornamented windows and doors, building columns, and actually considering elements or architecture and design. Then you get into Wild West and eventually Fantasy Land with some really great builds. The Space section was also neat with mechs and things like sliding doors.

Here is a pic from Fantasy Land. I had taken a couple of other pics myself, and maybe I'll post them sometime. The advantage that The LEGO Ideas Book has over Awesome Ideas is that it focuses more on actual Castle stuff and had Pirates. But there was no Wild West. So, there are pros and cons.

If you can get it cheap, then grab it! Those Building Bigger Thinking sets are really endearing and have elements in colours you wouldn't ordinarily find them in, like the lime green treasure chest, or uncommom accessories, like the minifigure hockey stick. I just picked up Ocean's Bottom and I also have World Fun -- can't say which is better yet, but both are great value for the parts (Ocean's Bottom was $34.99 CDN for 579 pieces). As people have said, getting lucky on Craigslist is the best option. Finding a bulk sale on ebay is good too. One lucky anon here has a contact who gives him advance notice about large Lego lots in estate sales so he brings home huge volumes of klocki for a dollar a pound.

I live in a very rural area, but at least once or twice a year I get lucky and find some family that's selling their kids' entire collection for cheap at a garage sale. Last summer I got $800+ worth of Friends/Elves sets for $75. The year before, I got a box with something like 4000 pieces for $20 that included a lot of rare parts that are $10-20 each on cracklink.

Buy a gallon of Simple Green if the parts are sticky and gross and soak them for a few days, then wash them in hot soapy water (dish soap is best); if they're not too dirty you should still wash them in hot soapy water just because.

I collect lots all summer, put it aside, and build once the first snow falls.

I utilize in no particular order...
Craigslist
Various phone apps like Letgo, Offerup, etc.
Flea markets
Yard sales - Estate Sales
Store sales and closings.

More importantly I network with a lot of people that know I build and let them know if they see something to let me know ASAP and the more incredible find it is the better the commission they receive. (Money motivates)

Aside from that I set up the alerts for the stuff I can and let them do the work. Each morning and afternoon I get alerts for anything matching my search criteria.

I find it either all comes at once or nothing at all so it's good to set a budget because it can get out of control fast. I still have over 100 pounds to sort from last year in totes and have what I collected this summer. (Which I didn't actively pursue as much due to the fact how much I have already to sort.)

My big score this year was a lady was selling her house and gave (GAVE) it all away online. I got the alert and messaged her and I was the first one to respond with a "I can come get this now."
She was retired and would build everything from the Architecture sets to city stuff. Think Creator including Ninja even.

As for cleaning. It's a good idea as you don't know who or what has touched these things. Some lots are so gross that I have passed. Other times it's sets that have been partially disassembled and put into zip lock bags. I find that It's mostly dust from sets sitting for display that I deal with.
Once you have this much you need a good storage solution. Akron and Sterilite systems work for me as I have an entire room in my house devoted for storage while another for building. I don't have a setup quite like Jang or some of the other bigger collector builders (I don't get sets to review from Lego) but I have a good sized collection that I can pretty much build what I want now.

The other thing to add to this is the junk you find mixed in with LEGO. I'm selling off a huge lot of MegaBlocks I've pulled from the last two years for $85 today. Must be close to 25-30 lbs. I don't want it and used to throw it away. Now I put it aside and list when I have a good chunk of it.

I also rarely buy sets new these days although I did do the rare policeman hunt and got two at the 2nd store I visited just to say I got them. I'll also visit the nearest LEGO store an hour away for the PAB wall maybe 3-4 times a year just to see what they have for bulk part purchases that I may need.

Meanwhile cashier can't figure out how to scan code to give me $10 card. Tells me to go to customer service up front.

They are clueless there. So I'm at counter with all my boxes. Some I paid for others I haven't yet. The two people working at the counter can't figure out how to get me my card. Long line starts behind me with aggravated customers.

Finally a manager comes over and takes $10 out of the register and says this is just as good as the gift card, has the cashier bag EVERYTHING. Then says I can help the NEXT person in line!

I walk out of the store with $10 extra in cash and free LEGO along with the stuff I paid for.
Is everyone clueless at Target these days or did I just get lucky?

$95 in Lego for about $42. Not bad.

Part of the reason I had such a hard time finding the 40th anniversary wave was because my walmart over-ordered the TLBM wave 2 and had three or four boxes of them piled into a bin with some polybags. I've got my pick of the characters but they're not ordering more until those all get sold or stolen.

I see a lot of people complaining that Hogwarts Castle isn't "minifig scale". But that's not totally true.
Just look at the great hall section. Now the roof length here is only 3 or 4 studs shorter than the roof length of the actual Great Hall set. A very small discrepancy in the end.
All you'd have to do is make some minor modifications to the inside furnishings and Hogwarts Castle can work just fine as "minifig scale".

Honestly, I don't think it would be that easy considering the short width of the floor and the fact that most sections of the castle besides the Great Hall are absurdly tiny, but I'd love to see someone trying this regardless.

A bricklink store in Germany has 11 of those $130 tires for $6.78 each. A store in the US has two of them for less than $10 each.

I remember both of those, so good. The newer Creator set, Outback Adventures, is a bit of a letdown by comparison with the old ones. Those old product catalogues with the simple colours from the sets and the photography really evoke so much. I'd like to build a boat sometime. I have a build from my 2008 Creator Cargo Copter that I could make something with sometime. Those Building Bigger Thinking sets gave me some cool underwater pieces to work with, too.

Yeah, it's a lot of fun, and that whale build could have been a polybag or something by itself. I found it to be a sturdier building than the Skate House I have when it comes to moving around the different modules. Both are fun, and I'm a fan of the line in general. The Modern Modular Home is going to be mine at the end of the month. Maybe one day when I can find a deal on some others I'll pick them up, too. The sweet shop is kinda cute, and I'd get the treehouse one of it was half the price, but it's not as great as the earlier treehouse (31010). My local TRU has dozens of the Family Villa set and I never see anyone buying them, so I'm sure that will be a clearance purchase for me one day.

Bought this with my girlfriend for our third year anniversary. I was going to propose with this set, but the ring didn't come in time, so I'll have to work on a contingency plan once the ring arrives. All in all, a fun build. They got clever with their methods on this one.

For those of you who got sets from the 2015 pirates line, was it any good? Should I try to find old sets or wait for a new line of pirates?

If there are any current pirate-like sets (particularly sail vessels that would not look out of place in a 1700's setting, with or without minor modifications), that would be great too.

It's confirmed not to be dead, but very few rumors. Latest rumor is supposedly a Mini set and a Dodge set (both 2 car sets I believe), but I personally find it hard to believe. Guess we'll wait and see.

Various Pirate pieces have been scattered in some of the 60th anniversary sets. Mission to Mars has pirate hats, a sword, a parrot piece, scope accessory, and even a build for a little pirate ship. World Fun had a treasure chest and the printed treasure map accessory (as well as an Atlantis build). I'd like to think that the nod to the two themes is a hint that LEGO isn't done with either.

They did the same thing with some of the Batman Movie sets. Mr. Freeze, Joker and a couple of others come with a small build that combines to form the Gotham Energy power plant scene from the beginning of the movie. The problem is that there are two Scarecrow sets, each with a different piece of the power plant.

Either King's Castle Siege or Downtown Diner, but that would depend on your aesthetic preference. I'd go for the castle right now, because I'm lacking in more fantasy/medieval elements.

As someone who was able to finally get it earlier this year, it was completely wortg the wait. Missing a few small parts that I got replaced, but the overall castle is a great set. Currently have it set up with all of my other Monster Fighter and Halloween sets actually.

I've found that the only way to be fair, is to steal the stolen designs back by reverse engineering the unique designs that Lepin comes up with (wine bar) and BL the parts of %100 pure Lego. That away you can stick it to the chinks. Somebody in my LUG group caught building with a bunch of Lepin/whatever, which caused a huge shitstorm. I'm actually glad I missed that meeting, because I would have thrown up. All hail Lego master race!

If you make several accounts and make some purchases from various other stores to get them looking legit, you can then act like you're buying a from the offender and mess him up. I think bricklink watches IPs and stuff, so that's a thing to bother with. Make a bunch of new accounts and buy stuff and dont pay. Do that until they dont take new accounts. Then do it with your "real" accounts until they are sad.

Not really, since nobody wants to buy from a store with no/bad feedback. Once in a great while I get a clone brand piece mixed in with my genuine klockibricks, but that's probably due to simple error.

Having to tie your store to a PayPal account and a physical location means that it's probably not worth the hassle of trying to set up multiple accounts just to scam some manchildren for pennies. Your time would be much better spent doing literally any other type of criminal activity.
