Since I presume Prime Masters weren't exactly anyone's favorite, what would you say would be the best way of handling modern iterations of the Pretenders?
Based on the assumption that doing a full-sized robot with its shell isn't affordable (notinthebudgetbro.jpeg), I'd say go with the ROTF Bludgeon/Generations Skullgrin route and merge the shell and inner robot into one, with the robot mode styled after the shell itself and the vehicle mode after the inner robot's original alt-mode.
I'd kill for a Submarauder made this way.

That works for the monstrous/nonhuman looking guys. For Pretenders with humanlike shells, just remaking the inner robot seems better to me. Compare Timelines and Titans Return Metalhawk.

Making a bundle of Primemasters+deluxe bodies, the bot inside the primemaster shell would work as apowermaster to unlock the transformation on the deluxe, then the deluxe can use the shell weaponmode.

It's meant to go someplace along the combiner mode chest on most POTP voyagers (Inferno lacks it since it's a reuse from CW).

An interesting detail is that the Abominus chest can store the Enigma, but I have no clue if it's on purpose or by chance.

That'd be a nice fit actually, I like that. I don't envy you having to try and cover up all the blue with white though. Maybe a sprayed coat of white over the disassembled bits? I actually have no idea how to do a large custom like this, my only painting experience is with 1/72 scale little men so I've only ever used a super-fine brush.

Yeah there's some random brown/silver paint splattered on some of the new toys to simulate battle damage, but it looks pretty crap. Luckily one anon already showed us you can take the paint off with some 90%+ rubbing alcohol, the splatter appears to be only on bare plastic so you won't ruin it by doing so.

You should be able to find the KO versions of the combiner appendages for around 20.
3P shit tends to be prohibitively expensive for my tastes, spending $100+ on a figure is a bit more than I care to indulge regardless of the quality, all it takes is a snapped finger to lower that pricepoint significantly if you're a reseller.

The KOs of the PE appendages, or PEKOs, aren't the same ones you'd get from buying the actual kit meant for Starscream. They use an older mold with balljoints instead of ratcheted swivels and are typically not sized correctly, resulting in broken pegholes and reduced tension.

could just give them a proper robot face, at least for the Autobot ones, might have to get a little more creative with some of the Decepticon ones though since those guys are often a lot more naked(although that aspect of their design got used surprisingly well in their appearance in Transformers vs GI Joe)

I love it. My Lost Light shelf is still coming along. I'm not sure whether I'm going to try and fit more of the one-off characters (I already have Crosscut hiding in there), but if and when we get more of the Scavengers I'll be putting them all in there.

The comics' ending was half assed in my opinion, but at the very least MTMTE was some of the better stories we've had in almost any continuity. Of course that's debatable, but I still had fun.

Mine doesn't flop around as much, and is actually much sturdier than I remember. I guess the biggest issues I have are with the shoulders having so much kibble and not being as poseable as I'd like. The elbows don't bend as much in certain poses, as they get blocked by the rest of the arm.

I liked the tiny shells, it made the scale of pretenders actually make sense. Keep 'em but turn the inner bot to a headmaster and give them a matching body. Crankcase, Bombshock, and Sledge all get honorable mentions. Honestly, not counting the limitations of the drones or the gimmick itself, it's a very solid line figure-wise.

Marvel during the Shooter era was more into toy promoting comics. TFs wasn't the only merchandising tie-in comic they did. You had Shogun Warriors, Rom the Space Knight, Micronaughts and of course GI Joe, which iirc all preceded TFs. So there was really no competition in that era from DC, which was trying to remake itself into something with more serious storytelling.
