Haven't had as much time as I'd like to mess around with new robots, but a couple quick thoughts.

The Hygogg is superb! The articulation for the entire figure (from its hips to its individual fingers) is extremely well thought out. Having the mono-eye on a ball joint was a particularly nice touch. The detail is excellent too, even the UNDERSIDE of the shoulder pads are accurately detailed. There's also an integrated face-shield that works perfectly, which was a rad surprise because I never realized the Hygogg had that function!

Highly, highly recommended if you have any interest in the design.

The DX VF-1J is also absolutely superb. It looks excellent with awesome tampo detailing and the proportions/shaping of the valk in all modes is great. Above all, the valk just feels so good in-hand, be it the quality of the plastic (very solid feeling), the heft of the diecast feet, the superbly detailed gunpod with strap, or the small touches like the way the shoulders lock into place for gerwalk (the position of the shoulders in gerwalk is also perfect, allowing just enough space for the shoulders to avoid bumping into the wings).

Just an awesome toy (at a stunningly low price too, compared to say an Arcadia "premium finis" VF-1) and I cannot wait for the VF-1S. They really, really should have included some TV missiles with the valk, though. I still hate how they made all the missile variants web exclusive.

How is the Converge line? I've been getting back into Gundam again after being away from it since 2014 or so and their small size and low cost interests me since they wouldn't take up much shelf space or hurt my wallet much. I'm especially interested in the Zeta MS and G Gundam like Shining etc.

They're fun little desk riders! They're very well detailed considering the fairly cheap plastic they're made of (that sort of soft, gritty plastic that can also somehow be brittle when it's thin) and they're also fully painted so they look pretty good. Articulation is generally just shoulder and neck rotation at best, so you have some options for expressiveness but not much. They also all come with stands, but every one I've got can stand on its own (except the Ball, heh). The gum they come with is tasty too, haha.

It is a cheap candy line though, so QC can be off: paint overspray, crooked parts, excess glue, that kind of thing. Usually not too noticeable on normal display, but obvious up close.

Still, I think they're worth picking up for designs you enjoy. I see the Converge line as a sort of way to accent a collection (like, I really love Kshatriya, so a mini-SD Kshatriya is neat to have too!) rather than being a focus of a collection, so I think limiting the Converges to a specific series or line-up is a good way to go about it.

And since we never really had a formal year-in-review discussion; what'd you guys think of RDs (and mecha toys generally) in 2018? Was it a good year? What were your highlights or low points? What are you looking forward to for 2019?

I thought it was a solid year, with the ANIME releases continuing to kill it. Adding 0080 to the ANIME lineup was by far the highlight of the year for me and Kampfer is the RD I'm looking forward to the most. I also think pricing wasn't too bad this year, after retailer discounts (6K JPY for the Hy-Gogg is fantastically reasonable). I felt prices were reasonable for the size/engineering/accessories of RDs this year.

The higher end lines also had a great year with standout releases like the Metal Composite Wing EW, Metal Build Strike Gundam, or the Metal Build Gernsback, though that kind of leads into my lowpoint which would be the continuing influence of web exclusives. A lot of very desirable releases in 2018 were web exclusive, and even then several of those releases were STILL very hard to get. MC Wing EW, MB Astrea Type F, and the utter fiasco of the DX VF-31A (the low point of the year for me, grrr) were all very expensive web exclusives that were very hard to secure at reasonable prices.

Unfortunately I do not, but I believe Canada-anon has one and he's had nothing but good things to say about it (and Medicom too). If I recall correctly, his actually had a defect that caused one of the arms to fall off, but he contacted Medicom and they sent him a free replacement arm which worked like a charm. Pretty darn cool of 'em!

Afraid not. Sometimes things are discounted decently with whatever pricing algorithm Amazon uses, but nowhere near the sub-$20/sub-$10 RD sales of old. I was checking RDs on Amazon pretty regularly during the last holiday season and nothing ever really stood out as being a great deal. Heck, AFAIK the best RD sales in the States during the last holiday season were at Entertainment Earth, who put up a couple $20 or less RDs during their holiday sales.

MB are hardly over 25k now at default retail. Perhaps the retailers' cost price is pretty high in percentage terms compared to Robot Damashii.

Strike Freedom was proportionally the biggest suit in the line though whereas the Crossbone and F91 are the smallest, so the comparison isn't quite fair.

I'd say compared to a mid-level MB like the 00, I didn't notice that much of a difference in metal content.

Just got my MB Crossbone too. It is freaking amazing, glad to see all the accessories and shit it comes with, even more so compared to the previous MB Strike I got, which is so bare bones.

Nevertheless, the figure itself feels a bit too light for my liking, perhaps due to the chest being hollow. That aside it is a really worthy purchase and sure as hell they will milk the X-2 and X-3 out of it.

I don't think it's as simple as opening up a store.
There was all that hassle with the Star Wars model kits, then Figuarts of certain licenses etc. Even some Gundam games can fall under licensing issues because of all the different shows it might cover.
They got around that with some middleman-esque situation (The shit called New Gundam Breaker aside) but no doubt games and Gunpla/Figures fall into separate categories.

Shield failed just like the Cold Climate Type.

Have to use the hand grip to get it to the side of the forearm.

The forehead seam isn't nearly as noticeable as one down the front of the mouthplate. This is just awful, even Gunpla has better seam placement nowadays.

That's just the nature of the design. The fact the RX-78-2's head is basically an opened face helmet, along with the V-Fin and Head Camera helps minimize it. The Sniper isn't so lucky to have all those to help it.
Although I do remember some anons kicking up a stink because of that little line on the RX back when it first came out too. I suspect this seamline problem will be quickly forgotten once people have the Sniper in hand.

Yes, it is in Billbine colours. But they are labelling it as Kingdom of Na Royal Guard Chief machine to get some lore going. Most people won't be displaying the MSV/OVA stuff with the TV series ones anyway due to the differences in aesthetics.

I collect quality articulated figures and enjoy them, but my word, this is going to be on another level as a fun toy. Even the original HGUC GM II from 2001, which had all of three pieces in its head, had the sense to put the seamlines on the sides of the head instead of down the front of the face. Yet this head, which has at least 9-10 pieces of plastic in it, didn't have the same common sense. You're acting like Bandai had no choice but to do this when there are literally dozens and dozens (if not hundreds) of older kits and figures that are better planned.

Come on, stop trying to defend this. It's just plain bad design.

Had the chance to mess around with the Gunbarrel Striker for a bit today!

Sculpt and detail are excellent as expected. It's almost entirely painted with a matte finish and it just looks great. Decent size as well and quite fun to swoosh around!

I was concerned about the gunbarrel pods having a flimsy attachment, but happily I can report they're rock-solid.

Each of the support struts are diecast parts that connect to the Striker fuselage via a sliding tab mechanism. You tab the strut into place, then slide it forward to lock it into place (with that satisfying 'click' to let you know you've got it locked). The pods themselves then attach to the struts with the same tab-slide-lock mechanism. It's extremely secure!

Each gunbarrel pod can also be opened up to reveal the rail gun and missiles inside. Of course, there's also wires and stand arms included so you can pose the pods as if they've been properly deployed for combat by the Striker pilot, though I didn't mess with that.

You also get a huge railgun for the Strike Gundam to use, or alternatively you can collapse it down and use it to replace the Striker's gatling gun.

The Gunbarrel Striker can also mount the Strike Gundam's shield and beam rifle on its wing pylons. The shield plugs right in, while the beam rifle needs an attachment bracket. The beam rifle was clearly designed with this bracket in mind though, as it snaps on smoothly and holds very securely, while also being easy to remove.

Speaking of the small wings, they're partially diecast as well. The leading edge of the wings are diecast while the rest is plastic to accommodate the connection port for the beam rifle/shield. There's also some additional diecast in the Striker's internal structure.

My only gripe with this DLC would be the stand; it's basically the same stand included for the Aile Strike pack with a new adapter to cradle the Gunbarrel Striker. It works, but like most MB stands it ain't particularly attractive nor does it give you any options to position the Striker in a more dynamic way. An adapter that would let you at least bank the Striker to one side would have been nice.

Overall, a really nice and unique addition to a MB Strike that I'd absolutely recommend if you can pick one up at MSRP-ish.

One thing to consider is that the new GM Sniper has a much more detailed and complicated visor (seems to be clear-green visor with an additional metallic piece behind it for mechanical detail, like the Cold Districts GM) than the old one, which was just painted in. Thus, Bandai needed the seam there so they could fit the new visor parts inside the head (though, of course I wish the seam were better hidden; reminds me of the VF-1S head on Yamato's 1/48s, heh).

I'd wager the Cold Districts GM has a seam in the same spot, but it's covered up by that variant's "mouth" piece. Interestingly, my old GM Sniper has a mold line in the exact same spot, hehe.

As other anon have mentioned, this could have easily been remedied by either making the mouthpiece a single part that plugs onto the front of the face (like most Zakus do with the vent piece lately), or simply making the head split into front and back pieces rather than left and right. Gunpla has solved this problem for years and years now, and even though the toy division is completely separate from kits, the idea that nobody had the common sense to come up with either of those two simple solutions is concerning to say the least.

Yeah, it kinda does. I think because it's a new line with it's own price bracket, it's probably looking to grab that market of people who want cool action figures, but maybe don't want that 45-55 dollar price range we see on RD a lot. And for the general audience who don't know about AmiAmi and only see RD in the corner of their comic shop or conventions, even shit like the ver. Anime Zakus are at 60 bucks.

tl;dr We aren't the target audience so they're making cheap versions of stuff we have for other people

RD obviously caters towards your collectors who wants more accessories, more articulation etc.

I'm still going to give one or two a try though and that price point sure doesn't mean it hurts. Won't be replacing any of my current Gundam figures but will be nice to have some different styles too.

If you read the statement they put out back at the time, it was more a case of merging the existing toy and model divisions in with the Banpresto one.

Even then, it will be a case of 3 departments reporting to one overseeing boss as opposed to the model kit folks nipping over to the RD area to give them some advice.

That said, giving the cold climate GM a quick look over and it looks like a side to side split wouldn't have worked anyway. The neck joint seems to actually be part of the heads construction. Had it just been a balljoint similar to something you find on a model kit then I would have questioned the seam down the middle as it just means extra parts for no reason.

I might be entirely wrong but I'm not going to rag at the head of my GM to find out.

Couple of updates with the Universe line.

A review, seems they are ABS and do come with a couple of pairs of hands. The Tallgeese and Char's Zaku also appear to be considered, basically main rivals from each series.

I'm more of a tourist to this thread, but my main gripe with RDs have always been that I didn't like paying premium price for something the size of a HG kit, so these are looking very nice. I really liked the eva and pacific rim stuff because they felt beefy enough and had good range, and these look more in line with that.

But yeah, that's a weak review. Waiting on one that goes through articulation properly.

average means nothing's wrong with it, but nothing's awesome either, it's an older RD so don't expect ANIME level of articulation.

The Shiki's a pretty basic mech, so there's not much add on parts that'll get in the way of stuff, so it's not fiddy like the Gouf custom, but besides the gold paint, it's just a robot with a gun. so you know, average.

The previous RX78 is part of the ANIME RD Line. Universe figures are going to be cheaper and larger than their RD equivalents but have less accessories as a result, articulation is likely to be less as well.

These will be more stylized in their sculpt too and while currently they seem to be covering a lot of different shows, they probably won't go as in depth into all the shows suits as the ANIME line is currently doing.

It's hard to have a strong opinion from a review like this but they don't seem too bad. I wonder how easily they'll find an audience, though. I think something that more closely mirrored the MSIA line with a smaller price point (not that these are too expensive) might've had broader appeal. I'm not holding out much hope for the line in all honesty. I love the style and will happily pick up one or two but I bet a good majority who know the RD line will ignore it or just get a couple to see how they are but then drop it.

They might go down well in Asian territories but Gundam isn't exactly a big brand in the west. That might get a nice push with the Gundam movie in the works but watch the line get dropped as quick as the IBO RD's.

The only people I can imagine being interested are more casual fans (of Gundam or of toys, either one) that are willing to throw down $25 for a figure but not $40+. I'm not sure there's a ton of demand for that though given how niche Gundam is in the West now. The Toonami days of G Gundam and Gundam Wing are over. And even those people are unlikely to buy the figures with much regularity.

I think it might do well there. But they're very openly trying to push these to adult fans in the West ("we are particularly focusing on the West this time") and I just don't think it'll take. The MSIA line was a relative hit because of Toonami and because the figures were very much all-ages.

The thing about this line is it's trying for the dbz American and European market, 6 inch scale and all, the thing about gundam is it's too politically involved for them to get that audience. People only like wing because of the cool robots and only if they never came in on the boring politics, its why g gundam was the popular one.

If they want dbz success I'd say it's too late for gundam, there'd need to be an effort to market to a new generation, fort nite and apex legends skins, some way to get it watched a lot on twitch, basically doing a proper action oriented series for whatever the modern toonami is and whatever they had on public access in Mexico and Europe. Things like 8th ms team, g gundam , and 00, and less like seed and wing.

I don't see how they could though, but at the very least if they can get these 20$figs on toy isle shelves kids will still buy em. Bandai fucking sucks at anything not toy related though, so it's dead on the gaming front.

Jesus, don't remind me of that gutter trash. All they had to do was copy and paste Gundam Breaker 3 and done. Literally the one time they could get a free pass with being lazy fucks and they still can't even do that. Same with Gundam Versus, Jump Force, and Dissidia. All I wanted was 3 with more suits, more bits to customize and some new levels. I put it down after only a few levels and went back to 3. I heard the updates improved it a bit but just don't have the desire anymore.

By the way, has anyone ever bothered to use the decals/stickers that come with their RD's? Do they even stick well or is it just worth leaving them off?

It's a spiritual successor to the Jump series. I used to play Jump Super Stars and Jump Ultimate Stars on the DS and it was pretty damn fun online. They should have stuck with that formula. Hell, even J-Stars Victory+ is a million times better.

Make sure to work every joint as much as possible, especially the legs. They're very tight out of the box so move them back and forth constantly so they become a bit more manageable. Add a bit of shock oil to the knee joints so it doesn't get scratched up.

I told myself to quit Robot Damashii after 0079 and MSV as I have not touched a single 0080 design.

As a long time Gundam fan, I have always thought the best looking OYW designs were from 0083. I just couldn't resist those lineart poses and the effect parts. "The Winner" just kept playing in my head upon seeing this.

Bring on every other 0083 MS and their colour variants please. Torrington GM Kai, Zaku F2, Kimberlight Dom Tropen and Zaku F2.

Might be a few exclusives here and there later down the line but they have pretty done all the unique suits, the main ones at least. GM Command/Space Type are near enough recolours of Cold Climate (forearm shield issues are still gonna be there).
Rick Dom II could still come out under 0083 but Gelgoog Jager, Z'Gok-E and Guncannon Mass Production are a bit harder to guess.

Taskforce colors hands down. It's a nice blue for the designer colors but the taskforce has a better contrast and balance. I also like the splashes of orange alot, it's unique and cool. Feels appropriate for equipment designed for space (together with the white I guess it reminds me of the space shuttle system maybe).

The arm/shoulder holes in the cape are pretty big, If you just fold in the thrusters and push them through, then unfold, it works just fine. I kiiind of don't like it because the thrusters would burn the cloak.

Is there by any chance there is an empty hole above that china copyright crap on the lower back? If so I think the part you refer to should be in that hole. Not too sure what it does, probably just to keep the backpack on.

But got mine yesterday, love the High Mobility design and it just makes me wish more for a Shin version. Don't regret getting two basic Zakus back on launch but I know I already enjoy these 3 even more. Even dug out and dusted off the Trident base I had laying around as it seem's the most fitting for the Tri-Stars.
