>So today Greg clarified his vague outline for the Red Star revival plot he couldn't finish. Apparently the Red Star's purpose was never stated in the story bible, which is why he felt free to come up with a function for it and make it part of the "zombies on a space station" store he wanted to tell. The characters that were revived there wouldn't be themselves anymore and they'd eventually break down because the GBs fucked up the RS so bad.
He also said having Makuta take over the GSR was his idea because he hated that Mata Nui woke up so early and he didn't want to wrap up his story yet.
And he also spoke out again in favor of his method of not planning out a story because it's more fun for him if he's just as surprised by plot developments as the reader, and because he feels that if you plan ahead, you run the risk of forcing characters to do stuff they might not do in a situation.

This is halfway to being a piece of genuine writing advice - that you should not be afraid to change your plans if your characters naturally develop in a way that makes them following that preplanned script seem contrived. However, one should still plan. At the very least, one should consider the plot developments you pull out of your ass before implementing them, maybe ask yourself such questions as "will using this one mysterious bit of lore from the 01 as the basis of a zombies-on-a-space-station plot come off exactly as retarded as it sounds?"

the saddest part is that G2 of all things did zombie villains much more satisfyingly than Greg.

He also compared the method of writing as you go to how Orson Welles would never read up on a story before broadcasting it in his radio plays, so that the shock in his delivery would be genuine whenever something dramatic happened. Of course the difference is, Welles was just a narrator, his scripts had to be written and polished by other people beforehand.
But I can see why Greg would try to write like this. He says he barely had time to write most of the novels, and he could churn out entire HF books under a couple of days. There were almost never multiple drafts, he had to write fast and send it to get published, and sometimes he was surprised at the stuff the editors let him get away with. So he's clearly had experience at coming up with stuff on the fly. Again, the main difference between the serials and books and comics is that the books and comics had to lead to a predefined ending and fit into the larger narrative.

I think the process behind it was that the story team needed something to turn the boys into Toa without utilizing the Metru Nui Suva again, as well as explain why the Inika masks look like they just came from a futuristic rave.

Either the focus groups didn't like the rubber masks and their looks much, or Lego was concerned with rubber parts wearing down more quickly. I still have nightmares about 2007 squid pieces.

My theory is that organic masks were needed to not put too much time on new Toa figuring out their mask powers to focus on the villains and general story more. After 06, the need for Toa to once again discover their powers kinda fell off.

I think the changes in concept behind the Hagah are just one of many examples of the '05 arc's and set-line's mishmash of good and bad ideas coupled with so-so execution. There's much in that year I'd salvage and much I'd just drop or redo from the ground up. It's a shame the Bonkle team was forced by Lego to do that part of the story, and it shows that they didn't have enough time to think things through.

The crashes have been pretty even for me. Pokatu's and Kopaka's were the buggiest and most aggravating even discounting crashes. The latter level is just all-round badly designed because it lets you go on multiple paths like a maze but it still requires you to do things in a set order.

These two probably, though I don't really like Norik using Nuva shoulders.

I mainly just think their shields are good and rhotuka spinners are elder god tier launchers so they get bonus points for being really fun to play with. I also don't normally like it when sets use closed ball sockets for wrists but I think the fact that the elbow sockets are so open compensates for it.

You know I think I'd be much happier with launchers if they were just exclusive to one or two characters her team rather than being mandatory for every set starting with 2005. Havign a unique launcher did make Vakama stand out a lot.

I suppose it wouldn't be cost effective though, especially for the more elaborate launchers. Like no bean counter would ever let them make Cordak launchers or Skyblasters for only one or two sets.

today i built a bookshelf to house the sets I’ve rebuilt from my old collection (and a few more recent purchases). I still have 32 sets to rebuild and 4 already rebuilt that I haven’t put on the shelf yet. Looks like I might need another shelf.

Sadly these are 3D renders. A few artists made printable Kanohi for the other 4 though, some even made the Pehkui in its "real" form. The ones posted by >>7715021 are some of the best out there. For the Mask of Emulation, however, I prefer Khingk3d's version as it looks more set-like and less brutish.

First movie was big, I remember advertisements all over the place. No one cared for the second and third, and since the contract between Lego and Miramax only lasted three years, they didn't renew it due to the movies' low interest. That's why they switched over to video games instead in '06.
Legends of Metru Nui was originally meant to be a full blown theatrical movie, but I guess someone on charge realized it would be unfeasible to make a big motion picture under one year.

On one hand, there's a chance the filmmakers might have interfered with the story like they did in previous years, and would have asked the writers to tone it down. Hell, even Greg said that he was shocked at how edgy 2006 was and that he'd change it if he could.
But on the other hand, the Miramax films got increasingly bolder with their content, so who knows, maybe a hypothetical 2006 movie would have kept the "intensity" intact. One thing's for sure, their designs style would have been perfect for the Inika and Piraka.

The game does weird stuff like that. In one vid I watched, a guy somehow spawned in the Kini-Nui menu screen thanks to a bug, where he could walk around like it was a real game level.

Me, I'm still stuck in Lewa's level at the platform that kills you if you swing near it. I managed to land on it once, but haven't been able to repeat that feat since.

I feel like this post exemplifies the problem of all this wishing that there'd been movies those years. You're just thinking of it as just an adaptation of the material you already consumed, when in reality if there'd been movies those years their stories would likely have been drastically different, and all the media would have been structured differently around the movie.

Personally I always thought the years with movies kinda suffered, since everything leading up to the movie has to basically be filler, since the movie is in production before everything else there ends up being a disconnect where the movie can't reflect or depict anything in the media before it. Characters can't really develop or do anything super important before that, or even if they do it has to be ignored because the movie has its own set events and little character arcs established before the other stuff is written, and there's nothing that can be done about it.

I feel like 2009 in particular was hit super hard by this, with entire characters being drastically different than how they were in everything else. To be fair, that disconnect can be chalked up as Greg's failure to match the personalities he wrote with what the moviemakers were using, but to be fair his depiction of characters like Strakk or Tuma were wildly more interesting than the TLR stuff. Even 2004 is hit by it, where the Toa Metru spend the first half of the year dealing with the Morbuzakh, a pretty high-level threat, but it's not even mentioned in LOMN (even though the quest for the masks and even the Morbuzakh itself are depicted) the Toa just hold up their disks and go "Look we're Toa" when they have actual accomplishments to point at when they're being judged.

I dunno, movies are cool, sure, but they're also kinda limiting the way Bionicle's story ended up going. Also, it's a lot neater when the comics could just do the whole story instead of ending on a big "Watch our movie!"

I legitimately think Bionicle has the potential to become a Harry Potter-esque film franchise in the distant future. And I'm not talking direct-to-DVD kiddie fare, I mean full-on theatrical releases aimed at all ages without dumbing down the story.

The yearly story format works well for making sequels (or two prequels in the case of 2004 and 2005) and there's enough material in each year to provide for a 2hr movie. As far as box office potential goes, I think nostalgia, the Lego name, and the attraction of A-list talent (judging by other Lego movie casts) could provide it with a decent profit. Nothing Avengers-levels of course, but enough to continue the story until its end.

I dunno, just wishful thinking.

As it turns out, tahu's section of level 7 is in fact the last programmed thing in this build of the game. The worlds under "level 8" appear to be just small more-polished looking beta bits (but ENDG crashes the game). Just an FYI for anyone currently playing through it.

level 7 is supposed to be the mangaia, or at least an underground area leading up to it. the alpha build has a mangaia-looking level that comes after tahu's segment but that isn't in the beta and hasn't been added to the rebuild. the shadow toa and subsequently makuta would have been in this place presumably. basically, there is still no final boss. You have no idea. That vine section was the most unstable section in this game for me so far. Half the time Lewa couldn't even grab the vines, sometimes he just exploded while still on the vines without touching anything. I swear it took me probably over 50 attempts, and only managed to land on the platform twice without dying or crashing the game.
Incidentally, the Lewa level from the '03 game was also the one I hated the most, which is a shame cause Le-Wahi itself looks pretty in both games and Matau has a sweet bachelor hut.

Nah, if it were to be adapted into anything, a show would be more suitable than a wide release, mass audience targeting movie. That way the story wouldn't have to be drastically restructured (though personally I'd get rid of certain stuff like most of 2005), and you could give enough time to all important characters, and have concurrently running plots focusing on the Toa's and the Matoran's POV.
Most studios probably wouldn't see any potential in a faithful retelling, same as back in the early 2000s when they wanted to put a human kid into the story for more audience appeal. But in the realm of cartoons, having a show that's entirely about alien tribal robo-bozos wouldn't be out of the ordinary.

But 04 DID have generic Kanoka launchers, used by Matoran and Krekka. And then there was a second generic type used by the Vahki/Nidhiki.
So in 1 year you have 3 different kinds of launcher, all capable of using the same ammo - and what's more, it was an ammunition kind compatible with even earlier sets, since they were just reusing the Tohunga/Slizer disk mould.

Probably deep rooted childhood memories of missing out on sets they really wanted, likely strengthened by the general sense of mystery surrounding the early Bionicle years. I never dream of post-2004 stuff because I have most of those, but I have strong memories of toy hunting back during the 2001-03 years and missing out on dozens of sets that I wanted. Back then I found out about new toys through store visits, TV ads, Lego promo leaflets or through other kids, not from the web, so I associate those years with exploration and mystery.
It's not just Bonkle, though, I have had similar dreams of other franchises in years past. I actually started buying affordable Godzilla figures because my repeated dreams of looking for them in stores and souvenir shops were driving me crazy. And when I bought a few, those kinds of dreams stopped.

I dreamed last week that the Toa Mata were re-released, along with special boxes that had dozens of new and classic masks and official releases of the old misprints. There were new matoran and rahi too.

Honestly I think they were just made organic in the story to explain why they were rubber in the sets, and when 07 had hard plastic masks again, the story team saw no need to explain again/keep the trend going. Same reason Greg wrote the bit about the Inika's faces glowing so hard you couldn't see their faces at all, since the sets were just blank slates that the masks fit onto.

Good question. Hahli just kinda showed up mid-2002, but unlike Nuparu she didn't get a set until later. They already had Kotu if they wanted a new named Ga-Matoran character, but she was phased out in tandem with Hahli's rise to fame.
Makes me wonder if early plans for MNOG II or Mask of Light had anything to do with it, given that the movie had been in development since at least late 2001. Or maybe Hahli was just a belated holdover idea from 2001, since all the McToran bar Macku had masks corresponding to their respective Toa. So if they couldn't introduce her back in '01 for some reason (perhaps because they couldn't make her Kaukau look distinct enough from Gali's), they created Macku to fill in her spot and introduced Hahli proper once they were sure she'll be a thing.
Anyhow, Kotu just got shafted.

If things had gone right I wouldn't have really expected LEGO to bring back Takanuva himself while G2 was up and running. A proper G2 Takanuva would have been much more feasible (I mean literally CCBS Takanuva, not just Ekimu).

Don't like how from 2003 onwards all Turaga are portrayed like senile old farts. Lifespans in Bionicle are huge, doesn't really make sense to live tens of thousands years coughing and yelling at pesky millennials.
Could be better if they were like badass old Kung Fu monks, at least they could do shit in the story like that. One of the things G2 actually handled a bit better.

Of course this was the same movie that suggested there was some forgotten, ancient, primal age in the Bonkle world where everyone was primitive and feral and that they've progressed beyond that. Even though it was more or less the same people living there all the time. Sure, mutations and upgrades are apparently an everyday occurrence in this universe, but there was no actual Earth-like evolution that affected everyone.

the three shitty pictures here are from 2011. As you can see, my 14-year-old brain generally created either clusterfucks of ambiguous nature or made a simple edit to an existing design. The fourth image is from a few days ago in studio. I still have the balta one, i imagine he'd have fire, wind, and ice abilities based on the weapons and the fact that he's a ta-matoran. Not pictured is an old shadow toa MOC that I took apart to retrieve the parts long ago. He wore a silver avohkii and had a giant claw hand. I never gave much thought to the backstories or abilites of any of these, though my idea for the scorp is it's speedy since it will wear the kakama.

Like a Turaga should be as powerful as as Toa, doesn't make sense for them to lose power when they fulfill their destinies. It would also make more sense for insane Turagas I think.

I don't know. I think most people should agree that geriatric old Turagas were a mistake.

They don't HAVE to become Turaga when they fulfill their destinies. A Toa can stay a Toa forever. The point is that they give up some of their power for the greater good. Turaga ARE still powerful, they have control over elements and can use mask powers. I get where you're coming from, but they should not be just as powerful as Toa.

In my headcanon, the fight follows the imo superior Hapka version where the Toa take on each other's doubles, but instead of "killing" them outright, they absorb the beaten and incapacitated Shadow Toa like in the canon version.

It's a missed opportunity that the more experienced Toa of the Metru era didn't seem to have multiple masks in their Suvas, if they had Suvas at all. Especially for some of the Toa that never got sets, it would have been cool to explore them switching around mask powers on the fly. It seems like something you would want to take advantage of as a Toa.

I dunno, it could be that the only purpose of the Metru Nui Suva is to turn Matoran into Toa, and it can't actually store masks.
Inika/Mahri were more of a failsafe measure to do one single mission, so they didn't exactly have time to gather masks. Now Toa Metru really don't have an excuse. And locking out Nuva's Suvas in 2008 was a dumb decision, I would really dig the adaptive Miru and Hau designs in other colors.

Would like to add that there probably wasn't any great masks in Voya/Mahri Nui but Greg could've easily bullshitted an explanation if the mask collecting was supposed to happen

Interesting how lore being tied to toys is a double edged sword. On one hand it can make the craziest of shit happen, and on the other it can lock out story beats that would have made sense at the time. Like it would be natural to give like a wave or two to some no name Toa who help fight Teri's regime in '09, but Lego wanted it's soft reboot.

There could just be any number of random masks that belonged to now dead Matoran laying around. Alternatively maybe Axonn and Brutaka had a cache of masks stowed away for Order stuff, etc. Seems like a simple enough thing to bullshit.

To be fair, the story team probably only made that decision because a full set of mask recolors simply wasn't an option and they had to make up some excuse. The lack of mask packs would have hurt much more if the story had actually shown the Toa switching masks in 2008.

Honestly no Idea, but that made Trina and Volitak a godsend for MOCing, since silver is a neutral color. Only other ones I can remember quickly are the silver Avohkii and Pehkui, saved my ass when I needed to fill out the armor or didn't have a mask in proper color.
In case of Nuparu though it could have been that he barely had any accent colors besides silver, so they needed someting to make him not fully monochrome. Matoro doesn't have an excuse though.

You can still pick them up at fairly reasonable prices online. Might even get lucky at a garage sale or on eBay like I did, but the Rahi are worth it. I miss the heavy Technic aesthetic of early Titan sets to be honest, there was something uniquely charming about them.

Semi-related, but for some reason official media was more confused about her Bohrok-tooth "hair" pieces. In the movie they've been reinterpreted as long strands of wire-hair that hang down, in the comics they're pointing up like horns, and in Bionicle Heroes they're part of her jaw and look like tusks.

05 Titans were pretty well designed. 04 were hit and miss, but overall weren't necessarily bad - granted I have a soft spot for them but still.

I dunno, by 2016 the Toa almost looked like actual G1 sets due to more detailed pieces.
I liked the Masters though. Having bright colors, dual function weapons and gear functions really sold me on 'em.

With mask powers and interesting elemental applications Bionicle really has potential for drawn-out, JoJo's styled battles.
Just imagine a Toa of Magnetism quickly switching to Kakama to accelerate his punches, and then rapidly changing the magnetic poles of his arms to speed up the punches even further, unleashing a supersonic flurry of blows to an enemy.

As much as it pains me that Bonkle G1 never got a show and therefor possibly missed out on becoming near as big as other toy properties that relied heavily on media, like Transformers or Ninjago, I also think we might have dodged a bullet. Look at most Lego shows and how they suck. Look at the actual Bionicle movies and how they never lived up to the series' potential.
We were lucky to get passionate and creative guys like Templar to work on the franchise and enrich the lore. And remember that Lego originally didn't even intend for Templar to have as big a role in the franchise, the freedom they were given in 2001 was basically due to happenstance. If there was also a cartoon, there's a good chance it would have fallen into the same cheap-o, low effort garbage category as the 03 video game or JtO.
