I want to make a mask collection and display (as a way of siphoning my autism into it but still holding it back so I don't have tubs full of parts like I used to) but I'm having a little trouble deciding qhat should be included.

Obviously, all standard masks are included but what about

>hordika "masks" (and by extension, other faces, like the barraki or karzahni's mutated mask)
>strange representations of masks (like Vezon's "ignika" and the movie kraahkan)

Gonna be a bit. Going back to the drawing board on the legs, made them a little too long and the improved hip connection I gave her could still use some tweaks.
Might have an update later tonight. Really just getting everything to go together well is a trial, especially since it's been years since I've built anything. I still have no idea how I'm going to do her head. Part of me wants to go down the monstrous route, but it's still up in the air.

What particular changes would you make to the Nuva?
Do you have any ideas for what any alternate versions of their kanohi nuvas could look like?

Ideally this but realistically maybe change the plain looking limbs and weird kanohi design.

A middle ground could be new bodies with better articulation like the metru instead of changing just a few pieces here and there.

I think if I was gonna make my own "upgraded" versions of the Mata loosely based on the Nuva I'd probably only take the weapons and shoulder armor and give them the silver masks or something.
'course, problems arise (in regards to making them myself) with the fact that the silvers don't match, among other things.

Something like that is definitely not something the sets could have been like though, since they wouldn't be different enough to try to sell

Either keep the mata masks or just change them slightly, add better articulation and make their weapons more like upgrades to their original ones, instead of all of them dual wielding almost them same thing. I'd also change the armor, as I'm not a big fan of the design. Make it sleeker and more mechanical looking, preferably with some variation between each Toa.

I still don't know why they thought ball joints and "the exact same shell piece in every single set" was a good idea. Would it really have killed them to put axle holes instead of pegholes on the shells? Maybe make them connect to the bones with some tried-and-true pin and axles? Being able to put it on forward, sideways, or upside-down really isn't that useful if that's your only creative option available...

This is probably a hot take, but I really liked how Hau Nuva looked like a normal Hau, but almost melted, like if the powers in question were almost too much for it. Would've been neat to see other Mata masks in that way.

I always though that the way the Kakama nuva had those weird fins made it kind of look like it had built in speed lines.

I don't really mind the Nuva Masks as much as some people I think. They're not my favourite but I don't find them that offensive.

I think in a vacuum the Nuva Masks may have been fine, for me it's more the fact that they permanently replaced the original set of Mata masks, and those are far more iconic and unambiguously more aesthetic. The Mata masks would have been a tough act to follow likely no matter what they did, but the Nuva in particular were a rough way to follow them up

Make masks look more like the originals, just "updated". Maybe give them some sharper lines, tasteful greebles, make them more angular or dynamic, beef them up but keep some basic design elements. Ditch the organic/melted angle, I'm not even sure what was up with that. Keep the Kaukau transparent.
Honestly all the silver and dual wielding wouldn't be a problem, it's just that these later became so common that the Nuva don't look unique anymore. I think dual-function tools are a neat idea, just wish Onua didn't have to sacrifice his claws for them. I like how he kept his claws as a Nuva in the shitty 03 game.
Those aside, improve articulation. Those small click joints were already a thing back then, they could have used those as knees or elbows. By placing the ball on the hips and the socket on the limbs, they could have improved thigh articulation too.

Bingo. It's not temporary transformation, as far as G1 goes this is how they (sans Tahu) are stuck looking.

Despite that, the Mata have always stayed as the real faces of the franchise, and thankfully Lego understood that for G2 (one thing they did right, at least). Even the Uniters, which are meant to take after the Nuva, still evoke the Mata quite a bit (Lewa especially).

As with many things in Bionicle, it falls apart once you think about it for just a bit. The whole story is full of events that happen "just because", but really the whole reason behind them is they wanted to introduce new toys or show off scenes that conceptually seem cool in a comic or movie. See also: Takanuva's resurrection via glowing floor or Voya Nui's escapades.
The EP tubes in the Bahrag chamber would make sense if they had used them regularly to create Bohrok, but apparently neither the regular Bohrok, nor the Kal were made with EP. We know that much has changed behind the scenes with the Bohrok, Bahrag and protodermis itself, so I assume the EP tubes were a relic of an old idea that they kept in the story because they had to explain the Nuva somehow.
The Nuva cube is just as much of a hastily thought out idea, especially with the mini comic in the building manuals blatantly contradicting canon material. In the comic images, blocking the Nuva cube with a Toa symbol robs the respective Toa of their power, but in the story the cube is like a lock for the Bahrag and the symbols are keys. That's two contradictory directions being shown to the audience at once, because the Kal story was such a clusterfuck of filler.

Oh then I glossed over that in my quick scour through BS01 pages. In that case the presence of EP makes sense, and one can just theorize there were six tubes to make exactly the same amount of krana for the six basic Bohrok types every time they used them.

there's also the six Exo-Toa which happen to be stored in the Bohrok nest, behind doors that can only be opened by inserting one of each kind of krana into special floor slots. and then because the story team didn't like them they don't even come in useful during the battle with the Bahrag.
who locked them behind those doors? if they were meant to help Toa fight the Bahrag, why did that person think a krana-lock would be an effective means of safeguarding the exo-toa when the the Bahrag have thousands of the fucking things to hand? with this in mind, why -didn't- the Bahrag open the exo-toa chambers and rip the things to pieces?

The exact mechanics of the story around them don't make much sense, and the best it can be chocked up to is marketing and a collectathon. Bionicle was founded on the idea of a collectathon, Collect all the X to save the island. Some of their collectibles like the Mata Masks, the Kanoka Discs, and such, worked. With other collectibles however, like the Krana, well it was a real stretch. I imagine that it sorta went like:

Collecting the masks didn't have a good payoff either. They were just as useful against Makuta as the Exo-Toa were against the Bahrag. Atleast the latter's unsatisfying conclusion delivered a giant robot vs kaiju fight.

It's funny how even as a kid, the way they just casually threw out all the lore and mysticism of the 2001-2003 era, which was one of the biggest draws of Bionicle for me, for the flimsiest of reasons left a bad taste in my mouth, but I still went along with it because I was still too obsessed with this franchise. Looking back now, they really should have done what Transformers does and rebooted it as early as 2004. That way they can introduce multiple different toa teams and multiple different makutas without cheapening and devaluing the original mythos.

Actually they originally planned on ending it after the first year with the giant robot reveal but kept going after Bionicle became such an astoundingly popular runaway success. They only really changed things up after 2003 when things were getting stale with the non-stop quests for the masks.

Personally I've always been super into the story aspect of Bionicle, and believe it shouldn't be restricted to just being a toy. I've always wanted a good Bionicle cartoon, and for there to be a centralized story source so we wouldn't need fuckin guides just for the main story. On that note, I wonder if Bonkle could even be successful as a show, something like the one you described, with top tier production design. A fully accurate retelling of the G1 story, as it is, probably wouldn't work. But if you were to patch it up and get rid of the more retarded parts, rewrite some bits, I wonder if the basic story, the characters, world, themes and the atmosphere would be solid enough to carry a series that people outside the fandom would care to watch.

What do you guys like of a Bionicle that is more Technic than CCBS?

The focus is on building with a canister set having alternative builds (toa, rahi, etc.) and combination modes with each other and non-Bionicle Technic sets. The pieces are multiple-purpose with the head piece being able to work as a foot or hand.

At the same time, the figures look coherent and are possible.

For 2001-2003 it could basically just be the Flashes for the matoran POV, and the B-plot being the Toa on their adventure (or vice-versa). Basically add in some scenes of the Toa interacting with eachother on their quests and i think itll be smooth sailing from there til the end of Mask of Light.
2004 could do with some more worldbuilding for Metru Nui, showing off the Toa's various confrontations/encounters as they trek across Metru Nui. They could handle 2005 the same as b4, or they could retcon it to be in the present with the Toa Nuva, making it more plot-relevant. Either way I'd love to see some of the novels' scenes carried over, especially Time Trap ofc
For the Ignition trilogy they could just use the comics as a baseline and build on that, maybe adding some introspection for the Toa Inika/Mahri and really hammer home the serious & urgent tone. 2008 can do a bit of tweaking, but it shouldn't be too hard to make a cartoon out of these years.
The Bara Magna years could be interesting, as they could potentially completely rewrite it (mostly Legend Reborn-onwards). Perhaps Mata Nui could be in the story from the beginning, with the B-plot of the Toa fighting inside Teridax, and Mata Nui has to live the life of a regular Glatorian and witness their troubles and lifestyles firsthand, as opposed to being told about this world without any familiar character as a lens. They could even do the scrapped Bota Magna story arc. I also feel they could build on Makuta's character a bit, maybe give him a sympathetic side to his actions as MoL implied sorta. As Mata Nui explores the Great Beings' ruins and learns of his history, maybe we could see for ourselves what Makuta was protecting him from?
Eventually it'd end in Mata Nui EARNING the Agori's trust, and we could see Mata Nui & Makuta's fight have a bit more personal stakes between the two now instead of just "evil god versus weaker good god." I think there's a lot they could build on here, idk.

It's very limited when it comes to attaching things in a structurally sound way. You have to basically bypass the ccbs pieces and omit the shells (unless you want the smooth texture) for anything half decent. It was objectively too specialized for its own good.

The fact that Bonkles are basically robots might give the hypothetical showrunners some leeway. That's how shows like Beast Wars could get away with extreme violence and on screen character deaths, and from what little I've seen of some of the more recent Transformers shows, they still play around with "scary" scenes from time to time, like characters crumbling into rust.
Something like a net exclusive Bionicle show for the older fans would be marvelous, as long as it kept itself close to the original content and tone. No swearing or tryhard edgy shit, just keep the tone from MNOG and the books. The issue is, unlike brands like Castlevania or Transformers, Bionicle left a relatively negligible cultural "footprint". If people remember it at all, it's for the toys, not for the story and characters. So there aren't any influential people in the entertainment industry lining up to adapt or reboot it because they love the story or the characters so much.

Most average people just bought the cool toys for a year or two and then moved on, sadly. The only way Bionicle today could have a long-lasting footprint is if it had an easy, singular piece of media a person could follow; in this case, a cartoon. Doesn't matter if it's a retelling of G1 for new audiences or a completely new story - if people aside from hardcore autists such as ourselves can't easily follow the story and plot progression, then it'll be seen as a passing fad to the outside world just like G1 was/is viewed.

I'm talking normalfags. Certain other kid-targeted merchandising brands that were huge when they came out but slowly fell out of favor managed to stay in people's minds because they left a big enough impact. People still remembered Optimus Prime years after the original Transformers show ended, same with the TMNT characters for example. These are properties that keep getting remade endlessly as cartoons, movies, games, comics and toys.
Bionicle was also enormously popular when it came out, it had an expansive story with tons of characters and lasted for an impressively long time for a toy brand. But despite all that time and all the books and comics, somehow practically no characters or plots became iconic with people outside the fans. People's knowledge about it begins and ends with "the red one" or "the ones that rolled into balls", and maybe they have faint memories of watching Mask of Light. Somehow, perhaps because of what >>7813717 said, all the immense amount of story content that Faber, Greg and the rest cooked up just didn't reach enough people to leave a mark on them. It left only a little impact and this could be one reason Bionicle isn't one of those once-great story driven kid franchises people keep going back to. Not the main reason, just one of them.

Here's a question: If you had the rights to Bionicle and all the resources you would need, what kind of series would you make? Would it be a film, a mini-series, a tv show, etc? Would it have a continuous story or would it be episodic? What's the tone? Would it have cheap 2d flash animation or meltdown-inducing 3d CGI. Would it even be animated or would it be like The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance, where it has puppets moving in real-time? Would it even be on video?

A video game. Remix some of the events of G1, change it so that it's loosey-goosey who actually accomplished some of the events. Have a matoran and toa character creator. Have multiplayer so that you and your buddies can be an actual toa team, or allow for multiple playthroughs that self-retcon and show your previous toas there alongside any new ones and allow you to go down different paths and come back together etc. Have other people's matoran show up in the overworld and be simple NPC's that you can interact with. Depends, you mean only media or toys too? If the former, then screw it, I'd just make a "fixed up" 2001 adaptation animated mini series, taking cues from MNOG for the tone and atmosphere. Because there's no official, fully canon telling of the G1 plot anywhere.
Takua would be the audience surrogate with his ongoing B plot but the Toa would lead the main story, with the two plots often crisscrossing. I'd use 3D CGI but not retardedly detailed and expensive. It'd be simplified CGI like the Miramax movies but with more toy accurate designs. If it's a success, I'd adapt the other stories too with each story arc being its own season, but I'd keep them simple with no strict adherence to G1 canon and all its Greg-isms. There would be lots of lore changes, like Matoran wouldn't live for a billion years.

If the latter, then that's a whole different issue. It'd be a scaled-down building system like in Ganto's proposal, where you could release nice environment setpieces too. Story would be about these robot tribes living in nature finding clues about their origin, but no GSR or stuff like that. Some tribes would be primitive, others more advanced, some would be allies, other enemies, but at the end they'd unify when they discover they're all related. Story would again be told via a cartoon and any potential comics or books would not be necessary to understand what's going on.

I would firstly mame a Lego BIONICLE Movie to tie in with the existing films, but intentionally change up the tone to fit MNOG's style of atmosphere with the occasional comedy, rather than the nonstop comedy the LEGO Movies are known for. It'd give fans of the movies a breath of fresh air. Plot would be a corruption of 2001, where Makuta wants to capture all of the beings on Mata Nui to forever store them in his underground canisters, "protecting" them. The climax and ending would reveal it was the dad in the attic, struggling with whether or not he should share his old brittle figures with his kids, and whether or not theyd even care about the story like he did.
Secondly, a 2D-animated series chronicling all of G1's story fairly accurately, just making it more accessable. Artstyle will be similar to MNOG but a touch more smooth, and with voice acting. I like the idea another anon said where 2006-08 were slightly made to resemble the Ignition comics' art. The series could air on television or Netflix, but preferably Netflix.
The movie would have a few premium Technic/Constraction figures released to tie in, and the show would mainly have System sets for the different scenes and locales, but nothing like of those G1 playsets that were just gimmicky buildings that weren't even canon. There would be a few Constraction sets of course, but theyd either be treated as UCS's or scaled-down Mixels x Technic figures. Whether the sets use minifigs or TechnicMixels, I also want CMF bags or parts packs to easily and cheaply create your own custom Toa/Matoran characters.

And each season is pretty self-contained, so having the full story one year at a time will reduce the reliance on being overly episodic. The one exception would be 2004/2005 which would be one season, with only a few episodes devoted to the Hordika arc because that was the biggest filler.
I'd have it also probably be solidly PG, and having the characters be 2D, since it's the best way to have easy-to-read expressions and clear acting without having to do the Miramax squishy masks method.
And release some toys too, sure. I'm more of a lorefag so I'm not too concerned with the merchandising department.

My headcanon is that very early on, a group of Glatorian found some Energized Protodermis and were altered to have superhuman intelligence through it, the shock of the transformation making them forget about it afterwards until the Core War.

Love the saw-club, looks like a instrument of savage violence straight out of a Zakazian armory. It's easy to imagine a Skakdi belligerent forcing another between that trans-blue sawblade and the crumbling wall of an ancient stone fortress. And, despite all the jagged edges, it looks like a pretty sturdy and well put together item. I could certainly see it outlasting several wielders.
The pole weapon also looks great, but more like something mass produced in a Xian factory, made with a sleek, clean, and reproducible design in mind. Sort of reminds me of the Vortixx Rhotuka Battle Axe from the Xian Weapons contest, except far more naturally comfortable to use, and not remotely as over-designed. Sort of like a weapon meant to be bought by those that either can't afford or don't care for all the fixings.
Concerning their constructions, I quite like the consistency ribbed texture all through the handle, even terminating with the similar texture of that hinge piece, offering an unorthodox and interesting way to differentiate it from more generic builds.
The 2015-style revolving blaster, while not remotely as unique, is still quite pleasing, and would fit right in with any of the other ranged weapons offered during Bionicle's original run. Frankly, it looks like a beefier version of the Protector of Ice blaster from 2015- a design I enjoyed, and the refinement here makes a pleasant reminder. As for the more straightforward and 'realistic' gun, it looks like it's rather fun to play with, as suggested by the presence (or lack) of axles in certain areas. The trigger is a very nice little touch too.
The saw-club, despite having more moving parts, and being visibly more massive than the other melee weapon shown, is obviously made of more of the large prefab parts that were a staple of Bionicle's run. But making them into something more complex rather than generic is something I love to see. It really has soul- and befitting of such a brutal instrument of destruction.

I also like the alternating pattern of the exposed axle and connector on the handle of the saw-club. Goes to show that even on big weapons like that, it's sometimes the little things that help it stand out and give it character. Between the uneven prefab texture of the Stronius club, the 'hilt' made of the black bohrok eye elements, the exposed axle textures on the handle, and even the simple and subtle color blocking (which, for much of my typing this and my previous post, I hadn't even noticed) of the trans light-blue emerging from between the halves of the club parts, it really looks like the work of a mad Skakdi inventor.
Overall, excellent work, anon. Even with no wielders in sight, and only other items to compare them with, these four weapons have a great deal of character.
Though... I do tend to agree with >>7815685

The saw club has really been growing on me, despite making it yesterday it's already become my favorite. I've always enjoyed making weapons, and it helps me with designing characters to use them.

I completely understand what you mean. The first three weapons look manufactured- built to specifics and not a single part out of joint, no colors out of place. Clean, but made to kill, of course.
The saw-club looks different. Rather than manufactured, it seems to have been born. Born, perhaps, in the bowels of a mad Skakdi weaponsmith's forge. And it doesn't seem to resemble mere metallic Protodermis formed into shapes by reproducible molds, but instead, the result of a stroke of both luck and genius come at the same fortuitous time, creating a deadly and powerful hodge-podge. Again, the subtle color blocking of uneven black on the outside and trans-light blue peeking out from the inside makes it look like there's a mythical beast imprisoned within it, clamoring to be free and sate its thirst for blood by its own power.
I eagerly anticipate the next chapter of this beast's story- the creation of a being powerful enough to wield it. >>7817115

Is exo-toa worth getting despite being like 60 bucks on bricklink? It's the only classic era set I'm missing but considering how weird it would feel to have one and not six if I were to get it solely for the sake of completion I'm wondering if it holds up on its own merits.

I had it when I was younger, but it honestly wasn't my favorite set. It's basically just a brick with a launcher and you can KINDA put a toa in it (not even all of them iirc, I think Onua doesn't fit right.)

So if you get it, it'd best be for just collection reasons imo.
